Moving forward Monday, October 26, 2020

OSU continues its push through the season Chris Becker Sitting at 4-0, the Oklahoma State football team is still going through the season unscathed, and it continues to improve from game to game.

Spencer Sanders made his return after playing only two drives thus far this season. With the redshirt sophomore playing his first full game in 51 weeks, he will continue to knock off the rust as the season moves forward.

Despite throwing two interceptions in his return, Sanders showed a lot of promise going into the Cowboys’ matchup with Texas on Halloween.

Coach Mike Gundy wasn’t concerned with the first interception, but the second one was a bad mistake when he tried to force the ball late and the defensive back made a play on the ball.

“I had a lot of time to study, so I watched a lot of film,” Sanders said.

“I made sure I was constantly telling myself I could come back the same as last year. I feel like I really made a difference. I know I had

my interceptions, and I’m frustrated with myself, but I feel like I responded well and I wanted to show everybody and this team I want to come different this year, and I want to do the best I can for this team because they deserve it.”

On the other side of the ball, a major flaw in previous talented OSU team’s was the secondary, but that is far from the case this season.

With Rodarius Williams playing his best football of his tenure and the rest of the secondary dominating opposing offenses, going up against a struggling Texas offense with an experienced quarterback will be in OSU’s favor.

“If our defense will stay humble and they keep practicing hard — they’re really practicing good, our football team is practicing good,” Gundy said. “I’m trying to get them to ignore the outside sources telling them how good they are.”

“They’re gaining some confidence.

Confidence is a powerful thing to everything we do in life — particularly in sports — and every day they’re getting a little more confident.”

Hargis reflects on years at OSU following retirement announcement

From the beginning, Hargis has been an advocate for strong community among students, solid education, and bringing up the next generation of loyal and true cowboys. The President and First Cowgirl have always been sure that the OSU community is cared for. Ann Hargis even coined the term “America’s healthiest campus” after installing many on-campus features to improve student health, such as the well known Pete’s Pet Posse.

Hargis always supported the creative and technological endeavors of all OSU students and shows this through his many works aimed at growing and improving the cowboy family and experience. Throughout his time at OSU, Hargis has facilitated the upbringing of many staples in the OSU such as The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts, O’Brate Stadium and Neal Patterson Stadium.

After 12 years as president, Burns Hargis leaves having made a significant impact on the Cowboy community.

“We just want to thank the entire cowboy nation for all the love and support that you have provided us and I’m pretty sure the best is yet to come, Go Pokes,” Hargis said.

When President Burns Hargis first came to Oklahoma State University as a student in the 1960’s, he didn’t realize how much of an impact the school would have on his life.

“I moved around all the time, my dad was a seismograph crew chief, and when you’re a redhead named Vaden Burns, it’s not easy going into new schools.” Hargis said. “We moved to Oklahoma City and that’s how I was introduced to Oklahoma State. I discovered for the first time in my life that this was my community.”

That’s why Friday morning, when Hargis announced that he will retire on July 1, he was particularly emotional.

“Ann and I have absolutely loved it,” Hargis said.

“It exceeded all of our expectations. If you ever get the chance to be a university president, do it.”

In 2007 Hargis was named OSU’s 18th president, becoming the second alumnus to serve as president.

In 2018, Hargis told The O’Colly the joy he felt when the school announced that he would be filling the presidential role.

“When they announced me as president, I told everyone, ‘I’m coming home,’” Hargis said.

Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis interacted with many leaders in his years at OSU. So when Hargis announced his retirement Friday morning, many state and local leaders reacted to it with praise and respect:

Along with First Cowgirl Ann Hargis, Burns has overseen an extraordinary resurgence at OSU during the past 12 plus years and has been a transformational leader. As a graduate of OSU, I am proud of my alma mater and as governor, I am grateful to both Burns and Ann for their exceptional service.”

Oklahoma State System of Higher Education Chancellor Glen D. Johnson: “Burns Hargis has been a transformational president at Oklahoma State University. He has also been a tireless and effective advocate for higher education and the life-changing value of a college degree. I have always appreciated his personal counsel and wish him and Ann the very best.”

I shared with him what had happened to me in Japan; Christ was real to me. He told me “you have been born again.”

I had never heard that term before.

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again...You must be born again.” (Jn.3:3,7 NIV) Since that time, I have met people from all kinds of backgrounds; social, economic, religious and ethnic, who also have been “born again.” The new birth is always centered on the person of Jesus Christ. It is amazing that these individuals do not have this new relationship with God because of saintly background or a pattern of good works. It stems from a real encounter with the living Christ. They are confronted in some way about their

need for a savior; Christ is presented as God’s answer for forgiveness and a new life. They come to Christ and are changed.

The criminal hanging on a cross next to Jesus is so amazing! (Lu.23:39-43) After all his criminal life, in a moment of complete honesty, he admits he is getting what he deserved. In Jesus, he saw something real and lasting. He simply says to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He turned to Jesus in humility and Christ gave him something eternal. “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

The gospel (good news) is that God will forgive and give eternal life to those who humble themselves, honestly acknowledge their need and turn to Christ. They become a new creation. (2 Co.5:17) It is a free gift!

This stumbles some! God gives us what we do not deserve. Don’t stumble, receive God’s wonderful gift!

Hargis looks ahead to future of OSU amid retirement

By Trent Gibbs Now that Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis officially announced his retirement, students, faculty, and alumni are left wondering “what next?”

Thankfully for OSU, Hargis said he’ll find the answer.

Hargis said he would work to “ensure a smooth transition to the next administration” and wanted to thank “the entire

Cowboy nation for all the love and support you’ve shown us”.

First Cowgirl Hargis echoed her husband’s sentiment by stating that the “ride has been terrific” and expressed excitement to finally “graduate” from OSU “because we’ve had such a great education while we’ve been here, our next step is...to graduate.” “I know that OSU is going to be sparkling...brighter than ever.”

Rick Davis, member of the Oklahoma A&M Board of Trustees, voiced gratitude “on

behalf of the entire OSU cowboy family” and emphasized the President’s “unbelievably historic fundraising” that brought more than two billion dollars to the university and “empowered scholarship programs” to bring about “positive change to the student experience” at OSU. An official release from go.okstate.edu stated that, during President Hargis’ time in office, OSU has gained over 80,000 new donors and raised $2.15 billion in private support.

The university has also granted a record breaking 70,000 degrees, almost a quarter of the sum of OSU degrees earned since its original graduating class in 1896.

President Hargis said he believes his “plan to retire on July 1, 2021 ought to give us enough time to hopefully end this pandemic and find a successor.” “I’m pretty sure the best is yet to come.” news.ed@ocolly.com

What Country Music Means to Students of OSU

When it comes to country music, there seems to only be two types of people: First, you have the ‘I like my country music loud enough to where I can’t hear you complain’ type of people.

Then you have the ‘if I had to pick between listening to country music for the rest of my life and death, I would pick death’ type of people.

Lucky for those country lovers out there, Oklahoma is a great place to be. Country music is enjoyed by most people here as Oklahoma happens to be in the center of Cowboy Country.

For freshman Molly

Humes, country music transports her to an almost “dream-like” life that doesn’t pertain to her real-life at all.

“Sometimes I just like driving around the country in Stillwater blasting country music,” Humes said. “And it makes me feel like such a country girl even though I am from the suburbs.”

While Humes may be from suburban Texas, country music has no boundaries to who can enjoy it.

“I am honestly a huge fan of country music,” Humes said. “It makes me wanna dance because I associate it with happy things such as rodeos and dancing.

It releases serotonin and reminds me of being on a boat or by the pool.”

It makes sense to a lot of people that a Texan would enjoy country music, but that doesn’t stop the rest of the country from enjoying the unique genre.

Small town Colorado freshman, Lilly Lavier, enjoys country music just as much as her friends from the south.

“The lyrics of country music are almost always very personal,” Lavier said.

“Country music has a large range which is nice because it can be sad or upbeat, and it’s very American which I love.”

Country music may not be for everyone, but there is something unique about the music that makes it different from other genres. Country

music hasn’t strayed much from its traditional roots as the years of its existence have passed.

While there is such a thing as pop-country now, classic country is the inspiration for a lot of current artists, and they focus on keeping the music genuine.

For freshman Erin Donohue, this is a huge factor as to why country music is so special to her.

“My favorite thing about it would be the raw instruments and old school vocals,” said Donohue. “And I like country music because it’s uplifting, meaningful and filled with wisdom.

My favorite artists currently are Cody Jinks, Toby Keith and Riley Green.”

'Stand right there' Magic tricks with Grace Yochum

Ben Hutchens With 31 minutes remaining in the match, Grace Yochum looked at Olyvia Dowell and told her one thing.

“The ball is going to come right here.”

Both Oklahoma State women’s soccer players were awaiting a corner kick from Kim Rodriguez and jockeying for position by the Texas Longhorn’s goal. When Dowell received the heads up from her teammate, she positioned herself accordingly, even though converting headers into goals was not her normal cup of tea.

Sure enough, the ball sailed in the air right to the exact spot Yochum said it would.

“I knew (where the ball was going),” Yochum said. “Because from the first corner kick, (Rodriguez) hit an arch and overhit it, I thought she was going near post so that’s where I went. But after the

first one, I saw where she was going and so I kind of just planted myself.”

Dowell knew that headers were one of Yochum’s strengths, so instead of clogging up the box, she simply decided to make room for the goal-scoringmachine called Yochum.

“All I did was back up, Dowell said. “(Yochum) was in a good position, and she is 5-9, and the ball just landed on her head and obviously you got to put it in the back of the net and that’s exactly what she did.”

Yochum’s header that sneaked inside the far post put the Cowgirls up 2-0 and helped seal a victory.

According to coach Colin Carmichael, Yochum’s ability to be physical and score corner kicks comes from a variety of factors.

“Her height (helps her convert corner kicks) and she tracks the ball really well,” Carmichael said of Yochum.

“Grace was a great basketball player in high school and she’s just a good athlete so she’s able to track balls in the air really

well.”

Besides her tall frame and basketball background, Yochum also has a mental makeup that gives her an advantage when competing for a corner kick.

“It’s a mindset,” Yochum said. “If you are scared of it, or if you’re kind of like halving it and you don’t really know what you’re doing, then you’re not going to get it. It’s all about attacking it and thinking that you’re going to score every time.

Interestingly enough, Yochum’s goal on Friday night was the first time the Cowgirls had scored off of a corner kick all season, breaking an 0-30 drought.

The coaching staff had started to get on to the team because they scored many goals on corner kicks last year.

“We haven’t really scored any (corner kick goals) this year, so we really wanted to make a focus on it and we worked on it in prac-

tice,” Yochum said.

Although practice certainly played a part in breaking the drought, it most likely wouldn’t have happened without Yochum knowing exactly where the ball was going to end up before it was even kicked.

“It was just really funny how it all worked out,” Dowell said, “but she scored and it was a goal so it was awesome.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

tinues to be dominant Iowa State was the defense’s first real test of the defense early in the season, and it lived up to the expectations. Before yesterday’s game, the Cyclones offense

was 22-of-51 converting third downs, which is 43%.

However, the Cowboys held the Cyclones to 3-of-13, a 23% conversion rate. The Cyclones’ high-powered offense isn’t easy to get off

the field, but OSU’s defense lived up to the task, as it has all season.

OSU’s Cowboy Backs are better than believed, when they get their names called After four games Jelani Woods finally found his way into the endzone. In a game that was supposed to see Iowa State control the tight end battle, it was OSU’s that came through.

Logan Carter and Woods had been run blocking pieces for the offense in the first three games, but with Spencer Sanders coming back, the offense took a new shape with tight ends. They combined for six catches and 81 yards. If they can continue the play into the next games, the Cowboys offense can continue to develop and become more dangerous.
