he Oklahoma State University community is mourning the death of junior Brandon Cavazos, who was found unresponsive in his bed Saturday afternoon. Stillwater police arrived at the Sigma Chi fraternity house, where Cavazos lived, at 1:30 p.m. after friends found him and called 911. Officers determined he suffered an unattended death. Cavazos, 20, was a sports management major from Bedford, Texas, and a member of Sigma Chi. Those who knew Cavazos said he was a dedicated friend with an infectious personality. Lauren Swinney, an economics and legal studies junior and Cavazos’ friend, said she will remember his contagious smile and attentive attitude toward others most. Swinney met Cavazos at church during their senior year of high school. Both stayed friends after coming to OSU, and Swinney said they often spent time together watching TV shows and hanging out with friends. Cavazos was a selfless person who made others around him want to be better people, she said. “Freshman year, I was having a hard day,” Swinney said. “He spent the whole day with me while I cried, and he had a big paper due that night at 6

The loss has hardly sunk in for anyone yet, he said. “You just expect Brandon to come barging through the door,” Morris said. “You can hear his laugh in your head and still see his smile and feel his Brandon Cavazos/facebook

close with the rest of Morris’ family, as well. Morris, who now works as a carrier agent for New York Life in Frisco, Texas, said Cavazos was always loving and enthusiastic. “There’s not an enemy on this planet of Brandon’s,” Morris said. “I know a lot of people kind of glorify someone who’s passed away, but with Brandon, it’s true. He was 100 percent as good of a person as everybody’s saying he is.” Morris started a fundraiser on gofundme.com to help Cavazos’ family finance funeral arrangements. So far, it has raised more than $10,000 with a goal of $20,000 for Cavazos’ single mother and younger brother.

“I knew there was kind of immediately going to be a need there, especially with a single mom that has two boys in college,” Morris said. “It’s just been absolutely incredible to see this how this has taken place, and (after) 24 hours they already have half the goal set.” As the news of Cavazos’ death spread, OSU students took to social media expressing support and grief for Sigma Chi and the Cavazos family as they shared the GoFundMe fundraiser. Sigma Chi said in a statement the fraternity is cooperating with police and asked for space as members try to make sense of losing Cavazos. “We are devastated at the

If you didn’t know Brandon, and you’re wondering what you missed out on, you can get a piece of it when you look at his smile. It was contagious. anxiety, fear on college campuses after election BY aub rie b ow l a n
Campus conflicts since election results
staff reporter
Oklahoma State University students are among more than 300 million Americans learning how to transition into the President Donald Trump era. Racist, Islamophobic and homophobic incidents have been compiled in a nationwide social media trend, “Trump’s America.” Police have barricaded Trump Tower to protect the building from rioters as anti-Trump protests continue to take place across the U.S. Numerous arrests and property damage charges have been made since Wednesday. A University of New Mexico student said another student pulled off her hijab, wearing a Trump shirt and making comments suggesting she was a terrorist while doing so, according to ABC News. Multiple reports of people pulling off Muslim-Americans’ hijabs and making threatening comments have surfaced since Tuesday’s election results. In Stillwater, OSU Housing and Residential Life reportedly discovered grafitti in Village C considered as “potentially racist slurs,” according to an email sent to students. Many organizations on campus exist to help minorities find a place at OSU, and the Muslim Student Association is one of the largest. Imen Amiri,
Wednesday, a student at San Diego State University reported she was the victim of a robbery while she was wearing her hijab. The university’s president, Elliot Hirshman, addressed a message to students on Facebook condemning the crime, according to insidehighered.com. University police are investigating it as a hate crime. At Wellesley College in Massachusetts, two male students from Babson College, a nearby school, drove through campus with a Trump flag on their truck. They parked outside a meeting house for black students and spat at a black female student, according to The New York Times. Wellesley is Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s alma mater and an all-female school. Texas State University’s police department investigated the source of racist fliers distributed on campus Thursday. The fliers showed support for Trump and Republican majorities in Congress and reportedly advocated “tar and feather vigilante squads” and “arrest and torture” of campus diversity advocates. The flier also urged building “The Wall” and filling the Rio Grande with alligators and piranhas, according to USA Today. Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, has reported multiple racist demonstrations, including an African-American baby doll with a noose around its neck found in an elevator. In a town an hour away from Buffalo, a public park’s softball dugout was vandalized with graffiti reading, “Make America White Again” next to a swastika, according to the Buffalo News. OSU MSA’s cultural officer, said the election results make it that much more important for the organization continue its usual practice: educating. “A lot of the hate and division that has been perpetuated into our societies and communities stems from ignorance,” Amiri said. “Our purpose as students at a higher educational institution like OSU is knowledge. … We as students all need to be reminded of this and apply it to all types of learning to become more aware of our surroundings.” Amiri said the orga-

nization will continue to create open dialogue among students through events such as MSA cultural night, MSA week and Da’wah tables on campus, with signs reading “Ask us about Islam.” Amiri was born in Utah and grew up in Stillwater, so she knows the challenges of being Muslim in America. “Stillwater is home to me,” Amiri said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Many college campuses across the nation have also seen an increase in racism in the days after
Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s win. The University of Oklahoma suspended a student reportedly responsible for a racist GroupMe chat sent to African-American students of Trump’s alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, according to a statement from OU President David Boren. “The University of Oklahoma has made it clear that we will not tolerate racism or hate speech that constitutes a threat to our campus or others,” Boren said in the statement.

The GroupMe chat the unnamed OU student repportedly included more than 100 University of Pennsylvania students and was titled “N***** Lynching.” It also reportedly contained a calendar invite titled “Daily Lynching.” The OU student operated under the account name “Trump’s Disciples,” but the FBI traced the messages back to him or her. Investigators haven’t concluded whether the student acted alone. Oklahoma State Queers and Allies serves as a safe haven for LGBTQ+
students. President of OSQ&A Preston Phillips said he woke up in disbelief Wednesday morning. “The first thing I did was ask my boyfriend who won, and he just goes, ‘Trump,’” Phillips said. “My first thought was, ‘But really, though?’” OSQ&A Vice President Galen Bunting said he fears for his friends because of recent discussion about Pence and gay conversion camps. “I feel like everything is going to get locked down,” Bunting said. “It’s not going to be safe to be transgender. It’s not going to be safe to be gay.” OSU President Burns Hargis sent out a campuswide email Thursday supporting acceptance of diversity. “As we move forward, I encourage all of us to remain committed to cultivating and enhancing a culture of inclusion,” Hargis said. “Respecting and supporting each other is the hallmark of the OSU community. It’s who we are.” Micah Allen and Rachel Moretti contributed to this report. Aubrie Bowlan is a strategic communications junior from Edmond. She can be reached at aubrie. bowlan@okstate.edu.
