OSU Symphony Orchestra to perform at National Conference in Vancouver J ET T URN ER NEWS EDITOR @ J BOY_31 5
The Oklahoma State University Symphony Orchestra will perform at the 2020 College Orchestra Director’s Association National Conference. The event will take place Feb. 6-8, 2020, in Vancouver, Canada. The OSUSO was one of two orchestras selected in the country to perform at this conference. The OSUSO will play in the opening ceremony. Thomas Dickey, director of the OSUSO, submitted the recordings of some of last year’s performances to the College Orchestra Director’s
Association. The OSUSO’s performance at the 2020 College Orchestra Director’s Association National Conference will encompass pieces from two of the fall semester’s concerts. This announcement caps off a successful past season for the OSUSO. Earlier this summer, the OSUSO was announced as a finalist for the American Prize in Orchestral Performance Competition. The American Prize is a series of new, nonprofit national competitions in the performing arts providing cash awards, professional adjudication and regional, national and international recognition for the best recorded
performances by ensembles and individuals each year in the United States at the professional, college/university, church, community and secondary school levels. Last year, the OSUSO was also a finalist for the American Prize, and Dickey won the American Prize in conducting. The OSUSO is the only orchestral program in Oklahoma to be recognized as a finalist for the American Prize in Orchestral Performance. The other group performing at the College Orchestra Director’s Association National Conference is the Cornell Chamber Orchestra.

The Words of King David: “The Lord is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid?” (Ps.27:1NIV). It is amazing the confidence we can gain in the Lord as we follow him. He is sure, steady, faithful and He never leaves us. (Heb.13:5-6) No matter what we face in life, as we walk with him, all kinds of difficulties, trials and even death itself will come our way, but we are “more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Ro.8:36-37). Down through the ages men and women have taken the challenge of walking in the Light of God; they have won great victories, some have suffered greatly, but all have won. David’s secret: “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: That I may dwell in the house OCOLLY.COM
(presence) of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to see him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe...” There is the story of the man who was to be burned at the stake because of his faith in Christ. Other Christians asked him; how will we know that God has given you help in this time of suffering? He said, if I lift my hands toward heaven, you will know it has happened. As he was being tied to the stake, he asked that his hand be left untied. When the fire was lit and the flames rose us around him: suddenly he lifted his hands to heaven. God had met him there! I urge you to walk with God. Let him be the center of your life. He is the same forever. He still meets with those who choose him! PAGE 2

6 Cowgirl soccer players to watch this season SA M L A NE
staff reporter @SAMLAN EOK
During the past weekend, the Oklahoma State soccer team kicked off its season with a victory at the Cardinal Classic. Here is a list of six players who could impact the direction of the Cowgirls’ season. Gabriella Coleman Coleman, a junior transfer from Mississippi State, is a native of Keller, Texas. She brings a veteran presence to a Cowgirl front line that is almost entirely made up of freshman. Coleman is one of the most athletically gifted players in coach Colin Carmichael’s squad. Her combination of strength and speed gives the opposition defense constant problems. “Gabriella (Coleman) is super athletic up front; she’s strong; she’s powerful,” Carmichael said. “(She) needs to learn a little bit tactically and maybe what runs to make, but she is a handful and is gonna cause some problems for the other team’s defense. In OSU’s season opener, a 3-0 victory against Lamar, Coleman was responsible for five shots, tied for the team high. She also scored her first regular-season goal. Olyvia Dowell MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2019
Dowell, a freshman from Longview, Texas, looks to be the most impactful of Carmichael’s freshman class. She recorded 56 goals and 22 assists during her high school career, earning district MVP honors her senior year. Dowell showed skills that Carmichael had been raving about prior to the season. In OSU’s season opener, she was involved in all three of her team’s goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two. “Olyvia Dowell is special; she’s a really good player,” Carmichael said. “We knew that recruiting her. She’s young, she still has things to learn, but when she gets on the ball, she makes things happen. She’s got tricks, she’s got some spins, flicks, backheels and she can finish. She’s one to watch, I think the crowd are going to love. She’s a kid that gets you on the edge of your seat.” With the loss of OSU’s top two scorers from last year, Haley Woodard and Marlo Zoller, Dowell could make the difference if OSU wants to challenge. Kim Rodriguez Rodriguez, a junior from Porter, Texas, was an All-Big 12 second-team defender in 2018. She is coming off her first stint with the Mexican national team in which she scored her first goal. Rodriguez will mainly play in the back three of Carmichael’s
squad but will spend some time in midfield because of her passing ability. She will be key to the Cowgirls’ scoring from set plays, whether they are free-kicks or corner-kicks. Rodriguez led OSU with four shots on goal against Lamar. Jaci Jones
Jones, a senior from Mustang, is one of the most experienced Cowgirls. She captained OSU in its opening game against Lamar, recording a goal and an assist. Jones has totaled 12 goals and 13 assists during her career at OSU. With a new front line, Jones’ constant involvement in the attack should ease some of the pressure that will be out on Coleman and Dowell to score. Although she is skilled going forward, Jones also makes her presence known on the defensive end, recovering the ball with strong challenges across the field.
ing increasingly involved in the Cowgirls’ final third play, tallying a shot against Lamar. With Carmichael switching to a 3-5-2 formation to start the season, OSU will rely on Morgan, along with left wingback Hannah Webb, to provide width in attack as well as defensive stability.
CHARMÉ MORGAN
Rebekah George George, a freshman from Choctaw, comes to Stillwater holding the Oklahoma 6A record for goals with 39 in her senior season. She will bring creativity as well as a goal-scoring threat in the midfield and attack for Carmichael’s team. Similar to Dowell and Coleman, she can help make up for the losses of Woodard and Zoller.
JACI JONES
KIM RODRIGUEZ
Charmé Morgan Morgan, a junior from Frisco, Texas, is coming off a torn ACL that forced her to miss the 2018 season. In OSU’s first game, Morgan started as the right wingback, a position she looks to hold for the foreseeable future. Morgan brought a strong defensive presence on the right, working alongside central defender Elise Hawn. She also is becomOCOLLY.COM

Cowboys shock teammates in talent show G r a nt R a mire z
staff reporter @G r an tRam ir ez _
With perfect timing, Dru Brown jokingly hollered over at LD Brown as the running back fielded a question about his quarterback’s personality. “That’s Dru right there,” LD Brown said. “(Dru Brown and Spencer Sanders) are just both fun guys. I was in the talent show with Dru like two weeks ago.” His passing mention of a talent show reasonably sparked a lot of follow-up questions. Joel Tudman, OSU’s
director of player development and team pastor, suggested the idea as a way for the team to bond and have some fun. Coach Mike Gundy and the players were all for it. “Joel has a rare ability to get people to open up and talk and communicate,” Gundy said. “He’s been with us a long time. He works with our team outside of football.” LD Brown, Dru Brown, Dillon Stoner, Samuela Tuihalamaka and Sione Asi created a group and unquestionably decided on their act - a performance of My Girl by The Temptations. LD Brown took charge
of putting together the choreography. With only a day of practice, the group took the stage donning special outfits and shades. The performance was an undeniable hit. But one judge didn’t think it was quite deserving of a perfect score. “We got scammed really,” LD Brown said. “The judges were coach (Kasey) Dunn, coach (Rob) Glass and coach (Greg) Richmond, he’s the one who scammed us. He gave us a nine.” Despite scoring 29 of 30, The Temptations couldn’t win against defensive lineman Israel
Antwine, who took home first prize. He earned a perfect score with his hilarious Barack Obama impression that won over the room. It was a surprising display from Antwine, who is generally on the quieter side. “You’d be around (Antwine), and he’s quiet,” LD Brown said. “When he won, we weren’t salty about it. We were like, ‘He deserved that,’ because we didn’t know he could do that.” Not all of the acts were successful. AJ Green and Amen Ogbongbemiga were pulled off the stage after
putting on a disaster of a magic show that ended up being more of a comedy act. Everyone laughed when they pulled out the wrong card for their final trick. “They thought they (were) gonna get it,” LD Brown said. “They (were) practicing and everything.” The talent show ended up being a great bonding experience, and the Cowboys plan to do more of it. “It was such a hit that I suggested that we have at least two a year,” Gundy said. “You find out things about the players you never knew.”

Q&A: Gundy says quarterback competition is ‘positive in their learning experience’ H A L LIE HART CO-EDITOR-IN-CHIEF @HALLIEHART
Mike Gundy hasn’t publicly named a starter. The Oklahoma State football team’s season begins Friday at Oregon State, and fans and reporters continue to wonder whether Spencer Sanders or Dru Brown will play as quarterback for the Cowboys’ first snap. Although Brown and Sanders are competing for the starting spot, they remain friends. When Gundy had a press conference Friday, reporters asked him how using two quarterbacks MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2019
affects practice. Q: How have you liked the interaction between Spencer and Dru through all this? A: You get a lot of coaches’ talk there. I don’t see it much because I’m not in the meeting rooms. I don’t spend a lot of personal time with them based on what I do, but I do see them having discussions over what’s going on on the field, which is positive. There’s no question both of them want to be the starter, and I’m guessing that they would both like to be the full-time starter, so there’s always gonna be some edge and competition there. But it has
not become a distraction, and I actually think it’s been positive in their learning experience. Other than that, I hadn’t been around them enough to know, so that’s the part that I appreciate with them is that they can compete and also work together to improve. Q: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced when you’ve had quarterback situations like this in the past, from your standpoint? A: We really haven’t. We’ve had good guys. (Clint) Chelf and J.W. (Walsh) got along. J.W. and Mason (Rudolph) got along. I mean, Mason didn’t ever want to
come out of the game, but he understood. There was never an issue. I’ve never had to have a discussion with anybody over the years. Q: What about just from a football standpoint, in terms of making sure the reps are where they should be and even leaning on your coordinators? A: You’ll never get enough reps for the starter when two guys are sharing time. That’s the issue you have. There’s no secret there. You can’t just put more plays in because the five offensive linemen only have so many reps in their body, so what we do is we just run
OCOLLY.COM
the same plays with the ones and the twos, and then if they run this list of plays, then the next guy runs this list of plays, and so it becomes the same. It’s just not with the first offensive line and the group of receivers. The thing that helps us in this area is we play a lot of receivers, and they rotate in. We always have done that here, and so there’s not really an issue as far as working with one guy more than the other at this point. Q: In a situation like this, does a head coach have to put even more trust in his position coach or his coordinator? Are you leaning
on Sean (Gleeson, offensive coordinator) a little bit more than when you know you have one guy in that (quarterback) position? A: It’s pretty clearcut. We work together. All that was done early in the summer, the reps, the scripts. The plan was in place before they went on vacation in June, so it’s all laid out exactly, because we knew, spring ball was over. It wasn’t gonna change before August, so all that was done before we ever started August practice, and it’s all been scripted the way it should be to get everybody quality work.

Turner’s Take: Disney continues to impress with Disney+ Marvel programming J E T TURN ER NEWS EDITOR @ JBOY_31 5
Marvel and Disney had a huge showing at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, yet they were still able to save a few surprises for Disney’s D23 expo this past weekend. Disney and Marvel announced three new exclusive shows for their Disney+ streaming service. Although little is known about each show, the idea of these new characters being featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes me excited for what is to come. The timeline for when these new shows will be released has yet to be announced, but I can’t wait to see these characters on the big screen. “She-Hulk” This series will follow the life and adventures of Jennifer Walters, who acquires Hulk-like abilities. It will be interesting to see which route Disney and Marvel take with this character because she could receive her powers in several ways. In the comics, she has obtained her powers through blood transfusions with her relative Bruce Banner, from her lab accident with gamma radiation and several other ways. Ultimately, I feel it will be unlikely to not MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2019
have Mark Ruffalo back to reprise his role as The Incredible Hulk. Considering almost all iterations of She-Hulk are related in some way to Banner, I don’t think Disney and Marvel will be able to avoid having Ruffalo in the series. She-Hulk is another big step in the right direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it continues to diversify its roster of lead heroes. She-Hulk is a powerfemale character in the comics, and as long as they portray her as such in the MCU, fans will love this series on Disney+. “Ms. Marvel” Not to be confused with Captain Marvel, the character Ms. Marvel will also diversify the MCU’s roster through bringing in Kamala Khan, the universe’s first Muslim-American superhero. A high schooler from Jersey City, New Jersey, Khan is an Inhuman who was affected by a cloud of Terrigen Mist that gave her the power to manipulate her body, allowing her to shrink or “embiggen” her body and limbs to fight crime. In the years since, Kamala has become one of the best additions to the Marvel Universe (“embiggen” has even received its own entry in Webster’s dictionary). Although I am admit-
tedly not too familiar with this character, I do know having such a diverse and important character in the MCU for younger audiences to enjoy is a huge positive step. Marvel has received criticism for not having a diverse set of characters, but steps in the right direction are taken with every new announcement Marvel President Kevin Feige and his team have made. “Moon Knight” This is the series I am most excited for. Born in Chicago, Marc Spector is a Jewish-American rabbi’s wayward son who, through a series of events, become the human avatar of an Egyptian moon god. Moon Knight continues to be one of Marvel’s most interesting comic characters, and hardcore fans of the comics (including myself) have been begging to see him portrayed in the MCU for a long time. Spector suffers from a multiple personality syndrome, splitting his personalities into four personas. Keanu Reeves is rumored to be in talks to play the title character, but nothing has been announced yet. What are your thoughts? Let me know which series you are excited about the most.
