Read Southall Band has more than earned its spot on this year’s Calf Fry lineup.

The band of Oklahoma natives had its premiere at the Tumbleweed, playing its first gig in February 2012. Saturday will see another landmark performance for the band as it returns to the Tumbleweed stage — this time for its debut on Calf Fry’s mainstage.

Although they will be first-time headliners at Calf Fry, these musicians are no strangers to the live music scene in Stillwater.

A number of Calf Fry attendees are likely to recognize Read Southall Band. The seasoned country-rock quintet has quickly become a household name among the city’s nightlife.

The band consists of Read Southall (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Sevans Henderson (keys and organ), J.T. Perry (lead guitar and vocal harmonies),

Four of the five musicians attended Oklahoma State University before deciding to commit to music full time in 2016.

Although the members hail from different Oklahoma towns, they each credit Stillwater for bringing them together.

Southall, the band’s frontman and namesake, remarked the band’s fated

formation in Stillwater.

“We all have a strong, mutual love for Stillwater,” Southall said. “It’s easy to say without Stillwater, we wouldn’t be a band.”

Although the band calls Stillwater home, its members spend a large portion of their time on the road.

Read Southall Band has been busy trekking across Oklahoma for nearly a year and a half, but Stillwater remains a favorite

destination for the group.

Now, the band members are eager to share their songs with audiences outside of their comfort zone.

“We’re finally starting to branch out to Texas, Kansas and Arkansas,” Southall said. “We’re getting ready to sign with a booking agency, so we’ll be hitting the road pretty hard.”

Southall released his acoustic solo debut, “Six

String Sorrow,” in 2015.

Less than a month ago, Read Southall Band put out “Borrowed Time,” the first album it has recorded as a five-piece band.

Available on Spotify and iTunes, “Borrowed Time” delivers emotional depth with a country flare. Read Southall Band puts a relatable spin on the “red dirt rock” sound, making it a crowd favorite of country fans and rock listeners alike.

Southall said performing in Stillwater will take the band back to its roots but the range of audiences in Oklahoma has been one of the best parts for him.

“We all love traveling,” Southall said. “The

diversity of touring is really cool. We’re learning to play for a frat party, but we’re also learning to play a biker bar. We’re figuring out how to spread our music among all kinds of people.”

Southall serves as the primary songwriter for the band, and his delivery of original lyrics has been known to make an impression on live audiences.

Sierra DeVries, a marketing junior, described Southall as a storyteller.

“Read is the most casual performer ever,” DeVries said. “He talks into the mic like you’re standing right in front of him and acts like he’s performing to five people.”

After seeing him perform on various Stillwater stages, DeVries said Southall gives the impression of someone at ease with the audience.

“He seems like the kind of guy you would love to hang out with on a Friday night,” she said.

Bri Bagwell is a country music artist who prides herself on independence from a record label and a manager. The New Mexican performer will charm the crowd with her charisma in “Hound Dog” and “Crazy.”

A Calf Fry repeat performer, Cody Johnson will tear up the stage Friday night. Last year, Johnson opened for the main performer, Kip Moore. As the crowd filed into the parking lot after Moore exited the stage, they chanted “CoJo, CoJo!”

These Nashville boys are back for another Calf Fry. Opener “Wicked Ways” will get audience members in the country mood that will last all night.

Chase Anderson Band

This band’s two founders have Cross Canadian Ragweed to thank for the venue in which they met. Since they got together in high school, the band has released “This Town,” its first record together and a springboard to a successful career for the young performers.

Cameran Nelson

Self-described as a “true Texas Troubadour,” Nelson rose to the top of the charts with “Good Thing Going.”

Einhouse will perform songs from his fourth studio album, “It Ain’t Pretty,” in the traditional Calf Fry after-party.

Josh Abbott Band

One of the main attractions of the weekend, Abbott and his crew have grown in fame and chart-toppers with every single release. “Oh, Tonight” was the first charted track to feature Grammy-winning Kacey Musgraves, and albums “Small Town Family Dreams” and “Tuesday Night” received Billboard recognition at No. 10 and No. 12, respectively.

Another Texas group in the lineup, Donahew has rocked the country stage since 2002. Fans can expect to hear “All Night Party” and many others from this classic.

Calf Fry weekend is coming up, which means the police force is coming out.

The Payne County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma State University Police Department and Stillwater Police Department will show no tolerance for drunken driving, public intoxication or other drunken infractions during Calf Fry weekend.

Kevin Woodward, undersheriff at the sheriff’s office, said the priority of the weekend is to keep

every road in Stillwater safe. He said Calf Fry is one of the biggest weekends for the sheriff’s office and everyone is on call. He said the office will work closely with OHP on ENDUI to set up sobriety checkpoints throughout the weekend.

“Keeping the public safe is the most important part,” Woodward said.

Woodward said similar to any festival, a lot of arrests happen during Calf Fry weekend. He said he cannot give an exact number, but he said it will be one of the busiest weekends of the year for officers.

officer will be ready to help during the event.

Woodward said in the past, the sheriff’s office has put more focus on ensuring the safety of people inside the concert but this year, it will focus more heavily on street safety. He said multiple officers will be stationed on the side roads near the Tumbleweed and will only go inside the concert if called in.

Although DUIs are a priority, officers will also look for public intoxication, minors in possession, fights, assaults and people who need medical assistance because of excessive alcohol consump-

Lt. Paul Fox has worked for the sheriff’s office for 20 years, and he said he has seen too many crazy Calf Fry weekends.

Fox said the rates of arrests during the weekend don’t necessarily rise compared with any other weekend because of the major influx of people who come into town for the festival. However, the number of arrests is consistently higher than almost any other threeday period in the rest of the year.

“Calf Fry is a big weekend,” Fox said.

“That means we won’t get

one.”

Fox said combining the sheriff’s office, OSUPD, SPD and OHP, there will be about 20 police cars patrolling Stillwater this weekend. He said officers will establish one sobriety checkpoint each night.

Captain Kyle Gibbs, of SPD, told the O’Colly the checkpoints will be at West Lakeview Road and Western Road, North Washington Street and Richmond Road, and Sangre Road and Sixth Avenue.

In 2016, 79 people were arrested for DUIs alone during Calf Fry weekend, OHP trooper Zachary Woods told the

Stillwater News Press in May 2016. Woods said police also arrested 30 people for public intoxication, more than 30 minors in possession of alcohol and had 30 drugrelated arrests.

Fox said he has noticed the number of arrests and reports from Calf Fry vary each year depending on the popularity of the lineup. He said this year’s good lineup leads him to expect a difficult patrol weekend.

has developed a significant following. The band frequently plays the Stillwater bar circuit, accruing new fans with every performance.

Nic Ramirez, a human development and family science senior, remembered Read Southall Band after catching one of its shows at the Tumbleweed last year.

“Everyone was having a really great time,” Ramirez said. “I had never heard of them before I saw them play that night. They’re a name to remember, that’s for sure.”

The band cultivates an easygoing time for its listeners. Offstage, though, the men of Read Southall Band are rarely so carefree.

Between concerts, recording sessions and the release of their debut album, the band’s members have continued to work nonstop since they started their journey last spring. Nonetheless, they refuse to take a breather.

“We’re looking to release another full-length album next year,” Southall said, already looking ahead to the band’s sophomore record.

Calf Fry is one of many gigs the band has lined up in 2017, but it’s much more than a date on the calendar to the musicians.

Calf Fry in 2016. This year, though, it holds a coveted spot on the Saturday night lineup.

The band’s move to the mainstage is a testament to the remarkable reception the newly established group has received in Stillwater.

“We love it here,” Southall said. “It’s got the feel of a small town with plenty of young people to keep it alive.”

Stillwater’s music fans seem to reciprocate Southall’s love. Connor Couch, a natural resource law graduate student, said Southall is guaranteed to bring a big audience.

“He’s a crowd-pleaser,” Couch said. “Expect loud applause and lots of encores.”

Calf Fry 2017 will be held May 4-6 at the Tumbleweed Dancehall & Concert Venue.

Ticket prices range from $30-$160. All ages are welcome.

“We’re all very excited to play Calf Fry,” Southall said. “We’re very blessed.”
