Stillwater’s annual Calf Fry Festival returns Thursday to celebrate Oklahoma’s largest Red Dirt music gathering.

Red Dirt music gets its name from the rusty red soil common throughout Oklahoma, and many people view Stillwater as the genre’s epicenter. Red Dirt is usually thought of as a subgenre of country, but it has aspects of rock, folk, bluegrass and blues.

It tends to have a few key instruments, and the songs tell a story. The artists who

perform the songs generally also write them.

The festival will take place at Tumbleweed Dancehall in Stillwater. The main stage will be outside with four to five acts performing each night, from Whiskey Myers, who topped iTunes’ country chart, to the local Chance Anderson Band.

The gate will open at 5 p.m. every day of the festival. Attendees can purchase tickets at the door an hour before that time. There are also tickets available on the event’s website, calffryok. com.

up on a smartphone to avoid lines forming at the will call booth.

The general admission tickets are $36 for one-night entry and $80 for the three-

day general pass. The event also has the option of VIP tickets, but they are for a limited number of people on a first-come, first-served basis. The price of VIP tickets

ranges from $65 a night to $160 for the three-night pass.

A VIP ticket includes access to the VIP area with its own bar and bathroom, as well as access to front-stage standing room.

Inside the festival, vendors will accept only cash, but there’s an ATM available for use. This event is friendly to all ages, but there will be alcohol available for purchase to those 21 or older.

For attendees who plan to drink, there’s a free shuttle driving from Tumbleweed to The Strip, picking up and dropping off people at the Bank NA parking lot.

Parking is also available at Tumbleweed but is limited.

Most parking ranges from $5-$10 based on the availability of parking. There’s also a strict no re-entry policy at the venue.

There are a few items prohibited from Tumbleweed, such as weapons, outside food and drinks, lawn chairs and any bag bigger than a small purse. Although lawn chairs aren’t allowed, festival goers are allowed to bring blankets to sit on at the edges of the venue.

It’s that time of year again, folks. Yep, it’s time to put up your books, dust off your boots and head over to the 27th annual Calf Fry Festival.

The festival starts at 5 p.m. Thursday and runs through Saturday at Tumbleweed Dancehall in Stillwater.

The Calf Fry Festival is a weekend full of people, music and fun. With featured artists such as Whiskey Myers and the Josh Abbott Band, this weekend is sure to be a blast.

But what’s the best way to prepare for the festival to make sure you have the best possible experience?

Let’s start with what to wear.

Thursday is supposed to be a little rainy, so a light rain jacket and closed-toed shoes are probably a good idea.

Friday and Saturday are supposed to be warm and sunny, so I suggest shorts and sunglasses and maybe a light jacket for when the sun goes down.

But no matter the weather, boots are almost a necessity at a Red Dirt country music festival.

Also, try to dress like you’ve at least pet a horse before with some jeans and maybe even a pearlsnap button-up. Please no jerseys or athletic shorts.

Next, let’s talk transportation.

Knowing fashion trends, planning a ride home and eating the best food are all part of planning for Calf Fry.

If you’re 21 or older and plan on drinking, make sure you have a designated driver. If no one in your group wants to volunteer, then public transportation is always an option.

Buses will run from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. during the festival. If you’re not the public transportation type, then you can always call an Uber, a Lyft or a sober friend who would be willing to pick you up.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you’re not endangering yourself or others.

The next order of business is food.

No outside food or drink will be allowed on festival grounds, but vendors will sell plenty of yummy treats inside.

The vendors inside will be take only cash, so make sure you hit up that ATM before heading to the Tumbleweed. If you

plan on buying alcoholic beverages, make sure you remember to bring your ID. Speaking of items not allowed on festival grounds, you can’t bring folding chairs in, either.

There is supposed to be plenty of seating set up around the festival, according to the event’s website, but we all know the best part about any concert is the mosh pit, anyway.

Calf Fry is a Stillwater tradition, and this year’s festival is shaping up to be just as great as it’s been in the past. Knowing how to prepare for it can better your experience.

First, the most important thing you can bring into the event is a sober version of yourself. Attendees might find it hard to enter the event if too intoxicated.

Finally, patrons can bring small purses or satchels if they are within the event’s guidelines at the entrance. Small purses are essential to the festival experience, as they hold OCOLLY.COM

all the items that make a great day. These can include one’s phone, gum, wallet and finally, the selfie stick that will take the perfect Instagram-ready picture.

It’s time to move on to what attendees can’t bring into Calf Fry, no matter how practical it is.

For starters, let’s get the common-sense no-no items out of the way, such as guns, knives or any other weapons.

If you try to bring one of these into Calf Fry, you will not be permitted entry. Many people will be drinking, and weapons and alcohol don’t mix.

Also, no outside food and drinks are allowed, so if you get a hankering for food, then

you must spend money on some greasy Calf Fry food. I do recommend getting a funnel cake or trying some of the food Calf Fry is known for.

Outside chairs and other seats aren’t allowed, so you have to sit on the grass. If it starts to rain, then you’re out of luck, as you aren’t allowed to bring an umbrella in. You might get the duo of rain and wet grass for the whole night, but you can bring blankets into the event if you want to combat the wet grass.

I can’t celebrate my last Calf Fry with my best friend this weekend.

I graduate in less than two weeks, and graduation, as well as Calf Fry, are only two events Brandon Cavazos won’t be by my side for. I met Brandon at freshman orientation at Oklahoma State University in 2014 before our freshman year started. From there, we were inseparable.

We attended our first Calf Fry together that spring semester, preparing by listening to Red Dirt country music the week leading up to it.

His friends came up from Texas, sharing beds and couches and crashing on floors.

That Calf Fry l was only one of many firsts we went through together during college. There was also our first football game in the student section, our first time storming Eddie Sutton Court and our first time dropping a class.

But now, the lasts will be by myself.

Brandon died Nov. 12, 2016, our junior year, because of acute ethanol toxicity, or alcohol poisoning, with an enlarged heart. He was 20.

Brandon’s friends no longer have an excuse to travel from Texas to Stillwater to listen to music.

It wasn’t during Calf Fry when we lost Brandon, but the opportunities he was irresponsible with will be even more prevalent this weekend.

So from someone who was directly affected by irresponsible drinking, please be careful this weekend.

Don’t push bound-

aries. Don’t let your friends push boundaries.

Find a sober driver.

Be the sober driver.

Don’t find someone older to buy you alcohol. Don’t buy alcohol for someone underage.

Enjoy your friends and Calf Fry, but also, be safe, be responsible this weekend. Please.
