Opinion: Calf Fry brings out the best of Stillwater

Unless you live under a rock, you know what this weekend is.

It’s the celebration of music in the flyover states.

It’s where the best stories come from. It’s practically Christmas for rednecks and cowboys.

Calf Fry is here, yet again.

But do you truly know the whole story of what Calf Fry means? What it stands for?

It’s a celebration of Stillwater and our sound of Red Dirt Country music.

Ever so slightly, country music on a nationwide scale has taken a slide.

Guys like Cash, Jennings, Jones, Haggard and Nelson have slowly been put on the backburner for the Luke Bryans and Jason Aldeans of the world.

But in Stillwater, and the south in general, it never really stuck.

In 1979, a man named Bob Childers released an album in Stillwater and, more or less, started it all. All that was left was watching the dominos fall.

The Red Dirt Rangers came. Jerry Payne and the boys fired up No Justice. Mike McClure pulled together The Great

Divide. Jason Boland, Stoney LaRue and Cody Canada moved into “the yellow house” on University Circle, and eventually

started their groups The Stragglers, The Arsonists and a few guys who called themselves Cross Canadian Ragweed. The origi-

nal Wormy Dog Saloon rocked The Strip before it picked up and moved to Oklahoma City, and once you were done there, you’d

stumble down the road to Willie’s and catch an acoustic show.

Stillwater was the hub for Red Dirt Country.

Now, it’s evolved into Calf Fry. Once a year, it’s a celebration of northern Oklahoma and the sound that embodies its people.

It’s a celebration of our way of life, things like a Rock ‘n’ Roll guitar, cold beer and that faint shade of red your truck is when you drive down a back road.

The biggest names on the country scene come from all over to celebrate it with us. People like Easton Corbin, Miranda Lambert, Randy Rogers and Josh Abbott.

Calf Fry isn’t just the party at the end of the year. It’s Stillwater at its core.

So when you’re 16 beers deep blaring some Ragweed this weekend, know that you’re apart of where it all began.

It wouldn’t be the first week of May without a Marvel movie. “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the culmination of the studio’s past three years, opens this weekend.

Director Joss Whedon returns to the helm with his ensemble-friendly sensibilities in full force.

While terrorist organization HYDRA spreads its influence, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) builds an artificial intelligence to combat it.

Stark must not have seen “Terminator,” though, for his creation is easily susceptible to despotic tendencies. Ultron ( James Spader) swiftly turns rogue, arguing that Earth’s salvation can be achieved only through humanity’s extinction.

The Avengers can’t have that, though; the original gang, including Iron Man, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hem-

sworth) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), reunites to undo Stark’s mistake.

As the first film of its kind, the original “Avengers” could have relied solely on its crossover novelty. Fortunately, Whedon brought his signature snappiness to the proceedings.

The dialogue, especially, capitalized on the conflicting egos of the film’s main players. I mean, had these heroes gotten along on the outset, we wouldn’t have had as much fun.

By virtue of being the team’s second outing, “Age of Ultron” should bring something new to the table. The film shouldn’t be wholly introspective — I still want to watch the Hulk punch Iron Man — but a deeper look at the characters would definitely be appreciated.

And though Loki is a tough act to follow, Spader’s Ultron looks to bring a cold sense of terror — perfect for a tyrannical robot. news@ocolly.com

Law enforcement to set up sobriety checkpoints in anticipation of Calf Fry Kaelynn Knoernschild @kaelynn_k

The Oklahoma State Police Department, Stillwater Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol will be out on the streets of Stillwater in full force this weekend.

With the Calf Fry music festival in town, authorities are participating in the ENDUI program to ensure the safety of individuals on the road.

As part of the program,

there will be sobriety checkpoints at Lakeview and Western roads on Friday and 6th Avenue and Sangre Road on Saturday.

The checkpoints will be in effect from 7 p.m. to midnight both days, according to a media release from SPD. The purpose of the ENDUI program is to discourage those who have been drinking, or using impairing substances, from driving, the release states.

The program is also focused on confronting those who make the decision to

drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Since 2013, SPD alone has investigated 99 traffic collisions involving drunk drivers in Stillwater, the release states.

Officers will have “zero tolerance” for driving while intoxicated, according to the release.

Officials encourage individuals who plan on drinking to designate a nondrinking driver, call a taxi, use public transportation, or call a friend or relative. news@ocolly.com

Oklahoma State second baseman Tim Arakawa is not a good rapper.

Arakawa is leading the team in RBIs this season and is second in hits, but his hits stop on the diamond.

“In the field, there is a lot of funny moments that happen because we are always talking, trying to goof around and stay loose,” OSU shortstop Donnie Walton said. “He (Arakawa) sometimes raps out there or just gives you a hard time if you make a mistake or something like that, you know, just trying to keep it loose.

“He tries to be (a good rapper).”

Arakawa agrees that his rapping is subpar, but it’s a matter of staying loose.

“We just like to kind of ease the mind a little bit out there and kind of relax ourselves a little bit and have fun, so me and him will try and spit a couple bars back and forth to each other,” Arakawa said. “It is definitely not good. I’m glad there are no microphones on us because it would be very embarrassing, but I mean we love it, and it helps out with the chemistry between us a lot.”

“That was my first time being away from home, so the first couple of weeks, it was definitely difficult, but I had some teammates from Hawaii,” Arakawa said. “I went to high school with my roommate, so it really wasn’t that much of a transition change because when you are familiar with the people around you, it makes being in a different place a lot easier.”

The first Cowboy teammate Arakawa played with was Jon Perrin. The two played summer ball in Mankato, Minnesota, the year before Arakawa was set to join Perrin at Oklahoma State.

“It was cool,” Perrin said.

“I kind of got there a little

bit late. We had been playing in (NCAA) Regionals and he had already been there for a few weeks, so anytime you kind of come into a new situation like that, you are just kind of getting a feel for who is on your team.”
