Oklahoma State University announced a $1 million naming gift for its new flight training center at its groundbreaking ceremony and fly-in Saturday. Linda Booker donated $1 million to OSU’s aviation program in honor of her late husband, Ray, who was a long-time OSU supporter and aviation enthusiast. After a visit to the current flight center before Ray’s death, the couple knew they wanted to help the program in any way they could. “It takes a lot of hard

work, skill, time and energy to pursue (aviation),” Booker said. “We already knew the demand for pilots was there, and we could see the enthusiasm in these

students, so it was a natural fit for both of us.” OSU aviation’s new home will be roughly 11,900 square feet, and actual construction on the building will begin summer 2020 and is expected to finish during summer 2021. Lance Fortney, program manager for the OSU flight center, said the program has been “growing like crazy,” and the building will have some much needed commodities. “(There will be) more office space, area for multiple flight simulators, and much more briefing area for students and instructors,” Fortney said.

High-enrollment numbers for the aviation program began fall 2018 when the school received a freshman class of over 100 students compared to the usual 45 to 50 students. A new policy implemented amongst major airlines forced pilots over the age of 65 to retire. With a lack of commercial pilots in the workforce, aviation schools across the country saw an increase in enrollment. OSU aviation has switched to competitive enrollment, allowing up to 75 students into the professional pilot major. Talk of the new flight center has created a buzz

amongst students and faculty involved, including pro-pilot major Elijah Siebersma. “I think the flight center is just another step forward in perfecting the program,” Siebersma said. “As a student, it’s exciting to see your program growing, and being a part of something that is becoming bigger is not something you get to be a part of everyday.” Aidan Adams, a freshman pro-pilot major shared some of this enthusiasm. “I’m really excited, and I can’t wait to step inside when (the flight center) is finished,” Adams said. “I think the program is already

pretty popular, and I think it’s only going to keep growing.” OSU ranks in the top 15% of flight training schools across the country as accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International. The new flight center will help the program continue to improve. “We’ve been continuously working on upgrades to our facilities, fleet and equipment so our students have a high-quality learning experience,” Fortney said. “This new flight center plays a major role in ensuring Oklahoma State continues to attract and retain the highest caliber of students.”

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 Jn.4:7-8 NIV) The apostle tells us; “Follow the way of love...” (1 Co.14:1 NIV) Jesus was the perfect example so let’s follow Him. We can choose to give ourselves; helping others, serving others, looking for ways to encourage and bless others, using our talents and abilities to minister. Tulsa — It’s hard to make history at Oklahoma State anymore. OSU wrestling is the most storied program in collegiate athletics with 34 national titles. But at the Big 12 wrestling championships Sunday at the BOK Center, the Cowboys did something that hadn’t been done in 92 years. The Cowboys secured their eighth straight Big 12 title—and 53rd conference title overall—with 147.5 team points before a championship match had started. In the third session, OSU went 9-for-9, coming away with four third-place finishers and a seventh-place finisher. “I just like what we did in the consolations,” OSU coach John Smith said. “(We) recognized that the title was still on the line, and we separated it before the finals. That was real satisfying.” The three individual titles were the culmination of three unique stories. Nick Piccininni (125) started the round with a win versus Iowa State’s Alex Mackall. With the win, Piccininni became OSU’s ninth ever fourtime Big 12 champion. Piccininni won his match 3-1. And while it wasn’t pretty he said he knows that there is only one thing that truly matters in a match. MONDAY, MARCH 9, 2020

Oklahoma State wrestling won its eighth straight Big 12 championship title Sunday at the BOK Center for the first time since Ed Gallagher’s 1921-28 seasons.

“The ultimate goal is to get your hand raised in the end,” Piccininni said. “As long as I keep on winning and moving along in the bracket that’s it.” OSU’s streak of titles ties the record set by Ed Gallagher’s team from 1921-28. At a program like OSU’s, these kinds of achievements are hard to come by. “It’s hard to set records at Oklahoma State with the tradition that we have, and the program that we’ve had forever,” freshman Travis Wittlake said. Boo Lewallen (149) was the next Cowboy to claim a title. He secured his second Big 12 title after defeating North Dakota State’s Henry Pohlmeyer. The first time the two faced off in their careers, Lewallen injured his shoulder. It turned out to be an injury he would never fully recover from that season, and this time in 2019 he was watching

the Big 12 tournament from his hospital bed. OSU’s third individual champion was Wittlake who defeated North Dakota State’s Andrew Fogarty 8-4. In a year that started with OSU’s best wrestler, Daton Fix, redshirting, Kaid Brock tearing his ACL and having six new starters, OSU managed to pull it together. While it might not have been the prettiest or most dominant tournament, this will go down as one of Smith’s biggest accomplishments—taking a group many doubted and turning them into Big 12 champions. “Anytime you tie or break a record at Oklahoma State in wrestling, you’re doing something,” Smith said. “I’m glad this team got to feel a little of that this year. It’s been a little bit of a struggle for us, but we did wrestle our best that we’ve wrestled all season.”

Dziagwa’s love for basketball,

Eric Reitan walked into his philosophy class to teach a new group of prospective students. He looked out into the crowd and was shocked to see a student standing 6-foot-4 and decked out in Oklahoma State gear. Most of the students in the classroom already knew who he was, but Reitan didn’t. The mystery student was OSU men’s basketball senior Thomas Dziagwa. Reitan admittedly does not watch OSU athletics, so it took him a while to find out who Dziagwa was. “My impression of him, which is a favorable impression, was formed before I even made the connection,” Reitan said. Dziagwa enjoyed the mental battles he had in each class as they debated certain philosophical topics. He said Reitan’s classes looked at both sides of the argument, and students had to decide which philosophy was right. “I just thought of the mental battles, like some people play chess, some people like sudoku, and I just like mentally battling myself with these topics and stuff like that,” Dziagwa said. Dziagwa’s love for philosophy first started with his faith. Born and raised in Catholicism, Dziagwa was introduced to the philosophies of Saint Thomas MONDAY, MARCH 9, 2020

Aquinas and the argument that God exists. “For his argument on why God exists, I’ve yet to come across an argument that can counter that,” Dziagwa said. However, the philosophy of religion wasn’t the only topic that sparked his mind. He enjoyed the philosophy of technology, civil rights leaders and life itself. Dziagwa took enough classes at OSU that he will graduate in May with a minor in philosophy. Dziagwa’s love for philosophy has also applied to the basketball court as it helped him simplify the game. “I mean, people like to make it complicated with the X’s and O’s,” Dziagwa said. “But at the end of the game, whoever scores the most points wins. And every coach has a certain philosophy on how they teach defense and how they want to run their offense.”

In his last two seasons, Dziagwa, along with fellow seniors Cameron McGriff and Lindy Waters III, was thrust into a leadership role on the team. He wanted to help OSU’s five freshmen get adjusted to college basketball. “I’ve tried to shed some hopeful wisdom on simplifying the game for them,” Dziagwa said. McGriff said he’s studied a little bit about Dziagwa and has a better understanding of his philosophy on how to be a better basketball player. “His work ethic, I think that’s huge to him and how he goes to work efficiently as well,” McGriff said. “He’s a guy who definitely I’ve looked after. The time he spends in the gym and how efficiently he works, not really crazy and still takes care of his body at a high rate.” Dziagwa has used philosophy in nearly every aspect of his life, but it’s been best used in his time as a college basketball player. As his time at OSU draws to a close, his love for philosophy and basketball has set him up for what lies ahead in life. “There’s no one great philosophy on how to play the game, and I think that’s what makes the game so beautiful,” Dziagwa said. “But at the end of the day, it just reminds me that the game of basketball is not so hard.” OCOLLY.COM

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion released her new extended play “Suga” after a heated battle between her and her label. Meg’s label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, delayed the release of her EP after the rapper attempted to renegotiate her contract with the label. Because of her label freezing her upcoming releases, Meg started the hashtag “#FreeTheeStallion” to raise awareness of her issues and clarified that she did not understand some of the verbiages when she first signed the contract. After public support and a ruling from a judge, Meg acquired a temporary restraining order against her label. She is now able to release any music for a two-week period with no interference from the record company, leading the rapper to release “Suga” before it possibly gets delayed again. Meg Thee Stallion is far from the first artist to experience struggles with a record company. Tinashe recently left her label after facing constant compromises to her artistic vision. It took Lil Wayne over four years to release “Tha Carter V” due to contractual disputes between himself and his label-head, Birdman. make an artist’s career take a turn for the worse. However, if the release of “Suga” means anything, it shows that Meg is here to stay. The EP’s opening track, “Ain’t Equal,” opens up with the line “I lost my mommy and my granny in the same month.” Throughout the track, Meg talks about triumph over adversity and addressing the people who criticize her music and image. The use of sword instrumentals for the song “Captain Hook” completely entrances any listener. Meg’s rapid-fire bars combined with the weaponized beats make for a standout track that will surely be popular with the dance community soon. Another standout album track is the song “Hit My Phone” featuring Kehlani, which offers a nice change of pace. The slower tempo and the smooth performance of Kehlani works well with the “Hot Girl Summer” rapper’s bars. Other songs such as the lead single “B.I.T.C.H.” and

“Savage” both show Meg’s range and dynamic personality. The rapper stands out from the already-small crop of female emcees, but her gender doesn’t define her performance skills. The first half of the project is full of standout tracks while the latter portion suffers from tracks that are a bit more forgettable. The use of auto-tune in “Crying in the Car” ends up hindering the rapper’s performance rather than enhancing it. The EP’s biggest flaw is the brevity of the project as a whole. At 24 minutes and nine songs, a few songs feel incomplete or rushed for the sake of a quick release. Such is the case with the short and vapid “Rich,” which only lasts a little over 90 seconds. While “Suga” will leave audiences desiring more, the EP is a good release for hiphop fans and Megan Thee Stallion fans alike. If the lyrics or instrumentals don’t capture the public’s attention, her infectious personality and satisfying delivery will do the job.
