People loudly cheered chants of Happy Holi on Friday evening. A hazy cloud engulfed a group of students, children and parents north of Classroom Building, but this wasn’t the ordinary wind that comes sweeping down the plain in Oklahoma.

The cloud immersing the group of students was filled with bright colors of purple, orange, baby blue, light green and neon pink.

The colorful powder in the air and mass dancing was part of the celebration known as Holi.

Oklahoma State’s Indian Student Association hosted the 2015 Holi color festival on Friday to the joy of many who came out to dance and be doused with multiple colors of powder.

Holi is the celebration of the various legends associated with the holiday. OSU student and Indian Student Associate president, Nikhil Kumar, said Holi is held to reassure the people of the power of the truth. The moral of all these legends is

the ultimate victory of good over evil.

“This is extremely important in the modern day society when so many people resort to evil practices for small gains and torture one who is honest,” Kumar said.

“Holi helps the people to believe in the virtue of being truthful and honest and also

to fight away the evil.”

A national holiday in India, Holi is celebrated once a year at the approach of vernal equinox, on the Phalquna Purnima (Full Moon). The festival signifies the victory of good over evil; the arrival of spring; end of winter; and for many, a festive day to meet others,

play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair ruptured relationships.

“All the people will gather at a common place,” Kumar said. “Great excitement can be seen in people when it is actually time for the play of colors.”

Primarily observed in India, Nepal and other regions

of the world with significant populations of majority Hindus or people of Indian origin, Holi has spread to parts of Europe, North America and the OSU campus as a spring celebration of love, frolic and colors.

Everyone who came out played, chased and colored with the dry powder and

water guns.

“People enjoy playing with the colors and splashing water on their friends,” Kumar said. “And the powder is completely nontoxic, water soluble and easy to wash off.”

Those who took part in the color festival raced to grab the bright colors of gulal and abeer, powdered dyes, and took turns pouring color and water over each other before the powder ran out. Everyone rejoiced and danced to catchy Bollywood club music.

When not dancing, Holi participants took the time to capture their memories by posing for pictures and taking selfies. But while smiles and laughs coated the faces of many underneath the colored powder, participants joyously battled with colored powder.

“The most exciting part is getting the chance to beat your friends in throwing colors and splashing water,” Kumar said. “(It’s) all to help people take notice of following a good conduct in their lives and believe in the virtue of being truthful.” news@ocolly.com

Wooden Nickel: A family since 1976 Zach Collums @zachcollums

A longtime local retail store occupying the corner of Knoblock and University has provided not only a business, but also a home away from home for its employees.

Since its opening by K. Cohlmia in 1976, Wooden Nickel has become a recognizable business in Stillwater, where many students and residents have memories of shopping or browsing.

A fire damaged Wooden Nickel’s building in January and caused the store to

close, but owner Allison Keys didn’t let it set the business back. Instead, she took it as an opportunity to improve the store and let it grow into a larger location.

Wooden Nickel plans to settle into The Strip in August.

As for the store’s current location, Keys said feelings of nostalgia are alive and well.

Keys was childhood friends with K. Cohlmia’s daughter, Kyle Cohlmia.

Keys said as she spent time around the store, she knew she wanted to work at Wooden Nickel.

“I used to beg K. for a job at the Wooden Nickel when I was 12, 13 years old,” Keys said. “I would

want to sit around and talk to him about when I could come to work. He told me I couldn’t come to work there until I was 18 years old.”

Keys started working in 2001 for Wooden Nickel.

She became a merchandise buyer for the store during her sophomore year of college and during her senior year of college, Keys became the manager of the Wooden Nickel.

Keys started to purchase Wooden Nickel from Cohlmia in 2008, and in 2012 she owned the store completely.

“I had always told him since I was a young teenager that I wanted to work for him or own my own store,” Keys said. “It

Old entertainment in Stillwater made new

Across 150 acres of land lies a white barn, which is now more than 100 years old. The broken visions of potential entertainment rest among the empty pavilion next to the barn.

After years of hoping to be the primary source of fun for Stillwater, White Barn owner Henry Wells transferred that vision to someone new.

Jerry Payne, co-owner of Periscope Music Group, took over White Barn Estates operations in January and said he is hoping to restore the location to its fullest potential.

White Barn sits on an abundance of space, with a residence neighborhood, a golf course, bumper cars and more. It has the potential to provide entertainment to the community of Stillwater and the students at Oklahoma State University, but it is up to Payne to develop the vision of White Barn into a reality.

The original goal was to have an estate aimed at giving college students a place to live and a center for fun. The concept behind the scenery is to give those who come to White Barn the “country club experience,” and to provide them with a new location for events. The entertainment portion of the center was supposed to target the Stillwater community, while the duplexes and living center would target OSU students.

“The original owner’s vision was to have an allenclosed duplexes section for students to live,” Payne said. “It’s kind of gone up and down. It used to be all college kids, and then it

got split.”

The estate is located just outside of town on Lakeview and Jardot, which doesn’t allow many people to see it in passing. Not to mention the lack of

advertising it’s had for the past decade, which doesn’t allow the estate to get any recognition from students, many of whom have no idea it exists.

to retire and begin looking for a new owner, and after hearing about Payne through a mutual friend, he contacted him to set up a meeting. Within a few months of figuring out

the details, Wells handed ownership over to Payne.

“I just want to get White Barn back to what it was and have a place for everyone to have events,” Wells said.

“Jerry has been in this business for a long time and I’m really impressed with him.”

Many students, such as Madelyne Hawkins, an agriculture science sophomore, have complained about Stillwater not having much of an entertainment center or a night life.

“I wish there was more of a night life for people who don’t drink or maybe just something new to do here,” Hawkins said.

After only a month of being the new owner, Payne has already booked a date party for an OSU sorority, Tri Delta, and is continuing to reach out to college students who need facilities to hold events.

Allie Sammons, the 2015 social chair for Tri Delta, said she would recommend White Barn to other sororities and fraternities.

“The venue was great and everything went really well,” Sammons said. “Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun.”

Payne said he hopes to host concerts in the pavilion at White Barn to get more recognition from the public.

Plans for a balloon festival are scheduled for April 2016, the same weekend as the memorial for “Remember the Ten” at OSU. Other efforts to create a full staff by

Payne said he can’t do it by himself and will need full support from employees to help him spread the word about the open entertainment center.

White Barn features land for golfing, picnic areas, white gazebos and a pond, all enclosed by a white fence.

Payne said there is ample amount of space to host weddings and birthday par-

ties, too.

Although this is a place Stillwater hasn’t paid much attention to before, Payne said he is determined to change that mindset for the better.

“We just want to get it back on the map,” Payne said. “We want to get it to be fun for families and students to come out and enjoy.” news@ocolly.com

The family aspect of Wooden Nickel runs even deeper for Keys. When she interviews potential employees, she makes sure they know what the store means to her.

“We always tell girls when we are interview that ‘This isn’t a job for us,’” Keys said. “It’s our life. It’s our family, our business, but it’s something I care greatly about.”

Tanner Wamsley, the manager of Wooden Nickel, started her relationship with Wooden Nickel like Keys. While she was attending college at OSU, Wamsley would continually shop at the store.

After meeting Keys through a mutual friend, Wamsley began working for Wooden Nickel. The two quickly became best friends and spend much of their time together.

“We hang out every day after work,” Wamsley said.

“We even travel together.”

Wamsley said a lot of time is also spent with the girls who work at Wooden Nickel, during business hours and off the clock.

“We really invest our time into these girls,” Wamsley said. “We want them to feel like this is

their home away from home.”

For the employees of the Wooden Nickel, the store is also a place where they can learn the skills they need for life after college.

Keys said she wants to make sure the girls have

“We help build relationships with our vendors and customers,” Keys said. “We really want to help them.

We care about them and their future; they’re not just

an hourly employee.”

Madison Wedel, an OSU apparel and merchandising junior, is one of the many girls employed at Wooden Nickel. Like Wamsley, Wedel shopped at Wooden Nickel before she started working at the store.

Wedel said the girls at Wooden Nickel talk more like girlfriends and less like coworkers.

“It’s a great place where I’ve made some of my lifelong friends,” Wedel said. news@ocolly.com

In an extra-inning baseball game, each pitch carries with it significant weight, especially those that end up on the other side of the fence.

In the top of the 10th inning, Illinois’ David Kerian turned on a pitch from Oklahoma State closer Koda Glover, sending it over the left-field fence at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium for a two-run home run, the winning hit in the No. 27 Illini’s 4-2 victory.

“When you pitch late in the game, you have the thrill of finishing the game and saving the game, and sometimes you have to deal with the disappointment of having something like that

happen,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said. “It’s just part of the game.”

It was the second goahead home run Glover has given up this season. The first came in the Cowboys’ season opener, a walk-off shot by Arizona State’s Colby Woodmansee.

Sunday’s loss followed an 8-1 OSU win on Saturday.

With the Illini taking the first game on Friday, 6-2, they also took the series.

“This is a team game,” outfielder Conor Costello said. “We’re going to continue to work and get better. It was a tough one to chew on.”

Illinois clawed for another run in the sixth once Freeman was out of the game. Sophomore right-hander Trey Cobb began the inning with a strikeout, but then allowed back-to-back hits and hit a batter. After falling behind 3-0 to Illini center fielder Will Krug, Cobb fired three straight strikes for the second out of the frame.

However, all the drama of the moment was gone the next pitch, which Cobb threw to the backstop, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Conor Costello busted his slump in a tough extra-inning loss to Illinois.

Last season, Costello batted .240 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs. Coming into Sunday’s game, Costello was batting a dismal .160, only getting eight hits in 50 at-bats. However, on Sunday, Costello went 2-for-4 and was a key contributor in both runs scored by the No. 10 Cowboys in their 4-2 loss in 10 innings to the Fighting Illini.

DALLAS — Basketball, in its simplest form, is putting the ball in the basket.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls found that task hard to accomplish. The Cowgirls (20-11, 9-9 Big 12) lost to Baylor 69-52 Sunday afternoon in the semifinals of the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament. The Cowgirls were looking to go to their first final round since 2008 after their win against Iowa State on Saturday. Baylor (29-3, 16-2), on the other hand, is going to its fifth final in a row and looking for its seventh conference

title.

The Cowgirls couldn’t seem to make any shots drop as they clanged off the rims at the American Airlines Center. OSU shot just 10-of-34 from the field in the first half and went into halftime down 40-21. The Bears’ strength was holding Liz Donohoe and Brittney Martin to 1-of-13 from the field and forcing Roddricka Patton to create shots.

Patton has been good as a distributor this season and a tenacious defender, which is why she earned a starting role after Brittany Atkins’ injury. However, she isn’t known as a shooter and had only four points in the game, all of which came in the first half.

“In the first half my shots weren’t falling. I couldn’t really do much about that,” Martin said. “I kind of just had to play hard on defense and hope it kind of helped me on the offensive end.”

OSU fans that traveled to Dallas, it was a pretty listless game until the Cowgirls attempted to make a push near the end. Cowgirl coach Jim Littell thought the team’s effort was high throughout the entire day and credits the players with keeping their heads up.
