Brandon Jenkins has been remembered as a gentle giant with a heart of gold.

As a pillar in the Red Dirt community, artists looked up to Jenkins, who died at 48 on Friday after having complications during open-heart surgery Feb. 22, according to his personal Facebook page.

Jenkins inspired musicians with his real music and down-to-earth personality. His music reflects who he was and what he aspired to be as an artist.

Jenkins was from Sand Springs and graduated from Central High School in Tulsa in 1987.

While attending high school, Jenkins taught himself guitar, was involved in the jazz band and sang in the choir.

Jenkins attended Oklahoma State University in the 1980s and met fellow musicians Cody Canada, Mike McClure and Stoney LaRue. In the 1990s, Jenkins got his start in the music industry when he was signed on with Rainy Records, a record label based in Alabama.

Jenkins performed in places such as the Bob Childer’s Gypsy Cafe and Willie’s Saloon, alongside musicians such including Cross Canadian Ragweed,

Every performance was genuine, and Jenkins gained the adoration of listeners and musicians alike.

Joe Cervantes, owner of Willie’s Saloon, said Jenkins never stopped staying true to the Red Dirt genre.

“He was definitely respected for what he did,” Cervantes said.

“He never, in all the years that he played at Willie’s, he never deviated from that. You could always count on a good show. He put the time in, and you could tell in his songwriting.”

whose looks could be deceiving. He was a giant of a man with several tattoos, but he was soft spoken and always treated others with kindness. He always had a big smile on his face and a large laugh to follow, according to Jenkins’ close friends.

Brad Rice, drummer of Jason Boland & The Stragglers, said Jenkins was “a big teddy bear” of a man.

“Brandon was very accepting of anyone and anything,” Rice said.

his on anyone. At face value, I would say he was just a very gentle person.”

As a songwriter, Jenkins never pretended to be someone he wasn’t. Jenkins wrote songs about a variety of subjects, but they all reflected who he was as a person. His music was not glitzy or glamorous, but realistic and relatable.

Jenkins, along with influencing younger musicians of the Red Dirt genre, was also involved with philanthropy within the music community.

Jenkins worked with the Red Dirt Relief Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides Oklahoma musicians with financial aid.

Before his admittance in the hospital to under-

go heart surgery, Jenkins released his newest album, “Tail Lights In A Boomtown.” Jenkins collaborated and co-wrote songs with artists such as Stoney LaRue and Travis Fite.

This year, at Bob Childers’ Gypsy Cafe, Jenkins will be awarded the Restless Spirit award. The Red Dirt Relief Fund gives the Restless Spirit honor to someone they feel has influenced the music community such as Bob Childers did.

The Brothers & Sisters of the Dirt Memorial Tribute will be held in honor of Jenkins at 2 p.m. March 18 at The Shrine in Tulsa. The event will feature several performances, raffles and a silent auction. All proceeds will go to the Jenkins family.

Nicknamed the “Red Dirt Legend,” Jenkins worked toward fulfilling the title to the best of his ability. John Cooper, member of the Red Dirt Rangers and close friend of Jenkins, said Jenkins came up with the nickname on his own and strived to fill the role he assigned to himself.

“Brandon wanted to be a legend, and he was,” Cooper said. “He is. He fulfilled the name he laid on himself. That’s all he wanted to do was be a singer-songwriter music man. I think he’s completely fulfilling the Red Dirt Legend that he was, and is.”

The Four Percent is making efforts to enhance race relations at Oklahoma State University.

The group, which James Sullivan represents, Matthew Newsome and Eryka McInnis, met with President Burns Hargis on Feb. 26 to discuss OSU’s initiatives to improve diversity, according to a press release sent from the Four Percent on Tuesday.

Jason Kirksey, Vice President for Institutional Diversity, and Precious Elmore-Sanders, Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity, also sat in on the meeting as The Four Percent and Hargis discussed observations each party had.

“They were receptive to it being our perspective,” Sullivan said. “Obviously, they sit in a different seat than us, and they see campus in a completely different light than us. I’d say it was productive in that they were listening, and we were actually having a dialogue rather than a whole bunch of tension or information.”

Hargis agreed to attend one of the group’s upcoming meetings in order to address his personal stance and the university’s stance on diversity, according to the release.

“I think he truly is concerned with the relationships on campus,” Sullivan said. “It’s still early, though. As long we’re having talks and communication is still being had and things are moving, it’s all good. It’s one of those things that takes time and struggles.”

This meeting came shortly after OSU’s Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter announced via Twitter the fraternity has conditionally accepted Jake Pulliam, who posted a racially charged social media post on his Snapchat story Jan. 16, back into the chapter.

In the statement, the fraternity listed several sanctions Pulliam would have to abide by and complete during his suspension.

After becoming aware of these recent sanctions, The Four Percent contacted chapter president Blake Giles to collaborate with Pulliam and the whole chapter to do community services in an effort to bridge the gap between majority and minority students, according to the release

The Four Percent met with Giles and Brooks Robison, the chapter’s vice president, on Feb. 27 to discuss these community services and plans of the upcoming The Four Percent meetings.

“From what I understand, they think that it’s a good opportunity to help and aid bringing about change,” Sullivan said. “They were happy that we reached out to them. It sounds to me like their heads are in the right spot.”

Giles, Pulliam and other executives plan to attend the next meeting at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in Classroom Building room 308, according to the release.

“The Four Percent commends everyone who has been a part of pushing for change, notably the individuals mentioned above, and looks forward to the continued work ahead,” the group said in the release.

“We know that change is a slow process and are committed to remain steadfast in our efforts to bring about a better cultural climate on campus.”

The O’Colly reached out to Giles and Pulliam on Tuesday evening but didn’t receive a response.

The Cowboys’ NCAA Tournament hopes have arrived at a third rendition of Bedlam.

After winning consecutive conference games for the first time this season, the eighth-seeded Oklahoma State basketball team will face ninthseeded Oklahoma on Wednesday in the first round of the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. It’ll be the third meeting between the in-state rivals this season after each team won on its home floor.

“Each team is gonna go through their highs and their lows,” OSU guard Kendall Smith said. “It’s not really my place to say where they’re

Both teams enter the tournament after finishing Big 12 play 8-10, but the Cowboys received the higher seed after tiebreakers. OU is

projected into the NCAA Tournament ahead of OSU because of the Sooners’ RPI ranking, a formula that ranks teams based on wins, losses and strength of schedules. OU ranks 37th in RPI through games played Monday, and OSU ranks 88th.

This is in large part because of the Cowboys’ lacking nonconference schedule, which ranks 306th of the NCAA’s 351 teams. OU’s nonconference strength of schedule is 161st.

OSU’s low RPI ranking means the Cowboys might have to win two games in Kansas City to get into the NCAA Tournament. If OSU wins Wednesday, the Cowboys would play on Thursday against top-seeded Kansas, a team OSU has defeated by a combined 23 points in the teams’ first two meetings.

OU and OSU haven’t played

since Jan. 20. The Cowboys have gone 5-7 since that meeting, and the Sooners have gone 4-8 during that time.

“It’s different this time because we haven’t played them in a long time,” OSU coach Mike Boynton said. “Obviously, both of our teams are in a different place at this point, but it won’t be that much different in terms of the game. We both still do a lot of similar things.

“It’ll come down to who executes the best, who plays with the most sense of urgency and who can overcome whatever mistakes that they make.”

‘Red Sparrow’ does not pander to faint-hearted

“Red Sparrow” does not cater to light-hearted moviegoers with its heavy use of graphic violence, as graphic depictions of violence and nudity are used to stun the audience into responsiveness.

Jennifer Lawrence shows the audience what happens to an average person thrown into survival mode. After her character, Dominika, witnesses something she’s not supposed to, the Russian government forces her to choose between death or the red sparrow program.

Francis Lawrence directed the film, which follows Dominika through her transformation from a Russian ballerina into a lethal spy. Her career as a ballerina ends when her dance partner injures her on stage.

Dominika’s uncle, Vanya (Matthias Schoenaerts), recruits her to get close to a Russian politician to replace his phone in exchange for medical care for her mother. The seemingly uninteresting mission her uncle sends her on becomes momentous after a man breaks into her hotel room and kills the politician.

She is then given a choice: be eliminated or join the red sparrow program. As a sparrow, she will sacrifice everything she has to serve the Russian government.

direction of the matron (Charlotte Rampling). The matron forces those in the program to push themselves beyond their limits mentally and physically.

In the program, the trainees are forced to complete unfavorable sexual tasks, among other unpleasant duties. They are stripped of their clothes and personalities until their identities start to fade.

Once Dominika proves her usefulness, she’s sent to track down and gain the trust of an American CIA operative named Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton). Her goal is to get the name of a mole in the Russian government.

Nate’s secrecy battles Dominika’s persistence to create a suspense-filled storyline.

Dominika finds herself in danger when the Russians become impatient with her slow progress. She must discover the name of the mole before her government decides to eliminate her.

This movie includes many unfavorable sex scenes that make it uncomfortable to watch. There are repeated themes of rape and torture throughout the movie.

Lawrence delivers a showstopping performance that makes the movie’s slow progression tolerable. Her struggle to hold onto her identity after the sparrow program builds on her character’s complexity.
