In celebration of social progress and black history month, the OSU Speakers Board brought a hip-hop icon and actor in the film “Selma” to Stillwater, and it could not have brought him at a better time.

Common, a recent Golden Globe and Oscar award-winning humanitarian, graced OSU with his presence in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Thursday night.

Common is one of the biggest artists OSU has seen, and he encouraged students to walk in greatness during his speech.

“If you want to be great, you have to train at it, you have to work, you have to practice,” Common said.

He reminisced on times when he did not believe in himself. He spoke of many situations that inspired him.

Common used his past experiences of not believing in himself and his inspiration as an avenue to encourage OSU students to stand firm in what they believe.

“You can’t be afraid to wear your greatness,” he said. “You can’t be afraid to wear your greatness no

matter where you are, no matter who’s in the room.

It is your duty to wear your greatness.

“The light that was created in you was made up to be put on a lamp stand, not under the bed, so that everyone who walks in the room can see your light.”

The process of bringing Common to OSU was not

easy. The task to bring a big-name speaker initially began as a project for Martin Luther King Day. Graduate student Evan Woodson hosts MLK celebrations every year and said he wanted to bring a well-known social activist to OSU. Woodson’s collaboration with the OSU Speak-

ers Board began about 10 months ago.

The board struggled to bring singer-songwriter John Legend and film director Spike Lee, which did not work out.

Ultimately, Woodson said he’s more than satisfied to have his favorite artist speak at OSU. Common recieved $60,000 for his visit.

“I thought it’d be cool to have somebody who represented a very different slice of American life and a different part of our culture,” he said. “If anything because we don’t get a lot of it here.”

Woodson said he hopes Common’s appearance will help students realize the change he encourages through his lyrics and most importantly, through his actions.

“The reality is Common is a humanitarian.

He’s an activist, he has a foundation, he’s an actor,” Woodson said. “I think it’s important just to bring a different perspective and bring a different angle of what American life is and can be.”

OSU students of different cultures recently participated in a series of silent

marches, rallies and die-ins to illustrate the importance of particular racial, religious and social issues.

The OSU Speakers Board is responsible for providing a diversity speaker every spring semester, according to Student Government Association’s bylaws.

Shae Godsey, OSU Speakers Board chairman, said Common’s appearance inspired students to pursue their dreams.

She said Common’s time at OSU created a celebration not only for social progress and black history month, but also for diversity of OSU. “We put in a bid immediately for Common, and he’s incredibly well-spoken and incredibly well-educated,” Godsey said. “He knows his stuff, and he uses his music to inspire change and we just really admire him and the board was really behind it the whole time.

“We’re a diverse university, we’re a diverse student body, we’re a diverse country, so I think it’s important to kind of celebrate that.” news@ocolly.com

Several nights a week, Addie Corley puts on a sequined uniform, a strategically placed Pistol Pete decal and big pearl earrings so she can perform high-intensity dance routines in front of thousands of Oklahoma State sports fans.

There are people who are born to dance, but then, there are people who are born to perform.

Corley was born to perform.

Strategic communications senior, member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and captain of the OSU pom squad, Corley is a whirlwind of dance spirit and stage presence packed into the body of a petite girl with long, blond hair and a confident smile.

“I could not sit in the stands and just watch,” Corley said. “I love performing.”

TINY DANCER Before there was OSU, and before there were big television show auditions, there was just a young Corley who wanted to dance.

At only 4, she began taking dance classes at Encore Dance Studio in Stillwater and competing in dance competitions, both independently and with the studio.

“Dance just kind of took over everything,” Corley said.

dance teacher at Encore, thinks of Addie as a daughter and said she is one of the best dancers she has ever seen come through Stillwater.

“She never missed a dance class,” Davis said.

“She would have had to be on her death bed.”

In seventh grade, Corley auditioned for the Stingers, a junior dance group for the NBA team, the New Orleans Hornets.

Out of 600 kids, Corley made the team and developed her interest in hip-hop dancing.

“In fifth grade I told my mom I wanted to win trophies,” Corley said.

Corley competed all through middle and high school, winning trophies and dance camp scholarships left and right.

“I don’t like to lose, so I’d always push myself,” Corley said.

Corley said she loved going to competitions and meeting other dancers.

“I got to meet tons of really, really great people,” Corley said. “I didn’t get stuck in the Stillwater bubble.”

In high school, Corley got a taste of school spirit by cheering for the Stillwater High School’s pom team and knew instantly she wanted to try out for the OSU pom squad.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE The February of her sophomore year at OSU, Corley curled up and slept in the backseat of her best friend’s car for an almost 10-hour drive to the audition of a lifetime.

“You’re always on camera,” Corley said. “They shot us cheering before anyone even danced.”

After another long day with an interview and more waiting nervously to audition, late at night the moment arrived for Corley’s solo audition.

Corley’s best friend and OSU alumna, Mikki Murphy, was a huge fan of the Fox television show “So You Think You Can Dance,” and knew that Corley had the moves to make it on the show.

After convincing Corley of this, Murphy made the arrangements and began driving Corley to the

SYTYCD open auditions in Austin, Texas.

“The doors opened at 7 a.m., and we stood in line until 12,” Corley said Anxiously waiting for hours, Corley finally danced freestyle with a group of dancers and was patted by one of the judges during her dance to signify that she should

stay for the next day of auditioning.

“They just throw you into the auditorium and throw us on stage,” Corley said.

She came back the next day in the same outfit, as per request of the judges, and sat around for another day surrounded by cameras and waiting to dance.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS “You’re going to Vegas!”

These are the words Corley heard surrounding her after performing one of her previous competition solos in front of a panel of judges, including Nigel Lythgoe.

“Nigel called me a sexy feline,” Corley said with a laugh.

Corley said she was excited, jumping up and down on stage, but her excitement turned out to be an even bigger challenge than the audition. Between her Austin audition in February and her Vegas audition in April, Corley was sworn to secrecy or would face disqualification.

“It’s a huge secret; no one is supposed to know,” Corley said. “I had to sign a contract of silence.”

When Corley arrived at the airport in Vegas, employees of the show greeted her wearing orange T-shirts saying “Katfish,” waiting to drive her to Planet Hollywood, the hotel where she stayed.

Unfortunately, Vegas was not all glitz and glam.

“We had to be downstairs at 4:45 a.m. and the day did not end until 1

OSU STUDENT WITH CRIMINAL RECORD ARRESTED Feb. 23: Stillwater Police arrested Oklahoma State University student Ralph Hayden Henderson for possession of marijuana and public intoxication.

About 8 p.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 800 block of East Hall of Fame Road in reference to a loud noise complaint. Henderson, 18, was approached outside the complex after an officer overheard Henderson on a cell phone talking about “wanting to purchase two pounds,” according to the police report.

An officer noticed Henderson had “thick, slurred speech and appeared to be very intoxicated,” the report states. The officer saw Henderson pull a package wrapped in a white plastic bag out of his right front jean pocket and shove it back into his pocket when he realized the officer was watching him, according to the report. After the officer

asked Henderson what he put in his pocket, Henderson removed the package containing marijuana and handed it to the officer, the document states. Henderson was arrested and booked in Payne County Jail.

He has not been charged.

Henderson was arrested Oct. 30, 2014, after surveillance footage revealed Henderson defecating in the Wentz Parking Garage elevator Oct. 27, according to the affidavit. Henderson was also observed driving a black Jeep belonging to OSU student Brady Brunson without permission from Oct. 26 surveillance footage, the document states.

Henderson was charged by Payne County Court with outraging public decency and grossly disturbing the public’s health Oct. 31 and posted his $5,000 bond Nov. 3. Henderson was charged Nov. 6 with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and posted recognizance bond.

Henderson failed to appear at his court hearing Dec. 8 and a warrant for his arrest was issued. Henderson was arrested Jan. 5 and posted his $10,000 bond.

Henderson’s next hearing is scheduled for March 20 at

1:30 p.m.

STILLWATER MAN CHARGED WITH FELONY AFTER HIT AND RUN Feb. 26: Payne County Court charged Patton Lynn Moore, 21, with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident after he reportedly hit a man riding a bicycle Feb. 25.

Moore appeared in court from the Payne County Jail without counsel. Moore posted his $5,000 bond Feb. 27.

Moore reportedly struck bicyclist Adam Shaw while driving his white 2007 Ford F-150 pickup in the 2400 block of West Lakeview Road, according to a court document.

Moore did not stop his vehicle and continued to drive until he was arrested at the intersection of U.S. Highway 177 and Lone Chimney Road, the document states.

Shaw received injuries to his hip and was transported to Stillwater Medical Center.

Shaw did not suffer significant injuries and has been released from Stillwater Medical Center, said Stillwater Police Capt. Kyle Gibbs Feb. 26.

If convicted, Moore could face a maximum of two years behind bars and a maximum fine of $1,000.

Moore’s next hearing is scheduled for March 25 at 1:45 p.m.

PRELIMINARY HEARING SET FOR OSU STUDENT CHARGED WITH FELONY, 2 MISDEMEANORS Monday: OSU student Evan Jeffery Echenrode appeared before Payne County Court with his attorney, William Baker. Echenrode’s case was continued until April 6 at 1:30 p.m. Echenrode, 19, was arrested Jan. 25 for possession of marijuana and charged with a felony and two misdemeanors at

his initial court appearance Jan. 26.

Echenrode appeared with his attorney and pleaded not guilty to charges including unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container of liquor.

Police found a metal grinder, a white and black glass pipe and a partially full container containing Jim Beam, according to court documents.

Echenrode posted his $2,500 bond Jan. 27.

If convicted, he faces a maximum of 11 1/2 years in prison and $6,500 in fines.

Last May, Echenrode pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, posses-

sion of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, minor in possession of alcohol and carrying a firearm while under the influence.

Echenrode received a oneyear deferred sentence.

For 22 years, three words have defined Le’Bryan Nash: “Ball is life.”

They made him a recognizable name. They provided him an escape from the streets of South Dallas. He lets his loyalty to the motto — the lifestyle — known with a tattoo of a basketball wearing a crown on his right shoulder. He ought to collect royalty checks with all his appearances on the Ballislife YouTube account.

But as the former McDonald’s All-American and top 10-ranked high school player in the country did the unfathomable, the mantra changed.

Nash became educated.

He grew. His perspective altered.

There, simply, is more to life than the game of basketball.

Nash’s new definition begins with his five-monthold daughter, Kenleigh.

‘A PRINCESS IN LIFE’ Gallagher-Iba Arena has several hundred lights that illuminate the historic basketball venue, but none shine brighter than Nash’s smile when he talks about his daughter.

He struggles to get the words out. Nash has never been accused of being shy.

Quiet, maybe, but always a good talker.

Kenleigh has changed that. The slightest mention of her puts Nash’s head in the clouds, as if he’s recalling the last time he FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2015

laid eyes on her. In a single moment, he nearly loses his train of thought and remembers what matters most.

“When you got the responsibility of someone else, that is your No. 1 priority,” Nash says. “I know I need to do everything I can to help make sure my daughter be raised in the right way, be a princess in life.”

Kenleigh lives with her mom in Fort Worth, but Nash sees her every day through FaceTime, and his mom, Samatha Nash, does the same while making a trip from her home in Dallas once or twice a week.

Samatha serves as Nash’s ambassador, being there for Kenleigh for him.

Kenleigh makes the trip to Stillwater to see her dad play almost every home game.

“It make us feel better because we got people in our corner to make sure we get it right,” Nash said. “It’s gonna be hard, nobody said raising a child is easy. We know the difficult times, we just try to get through it, be a great family.”

UNDERSTANDING THROUGH ABSENCE Perhaps, in life, the greatest lessons are the ones never taught. The saying goes, “How do you miss something you never had?”

Well, maybe absence is the key to knowing its importance.

Nash was raised by a single mother. With Samatha’s everyday actions, she taught Nash how to be a parent, how to raise a family.

Growing up in a single-parent home, Le’Bryan Nash always looked forward to the day he would be a father.

Samatha grew up not hearing the words “I love you,” so she wanted to make sure Nash always knew he was loved. Every text, every Tweet, every call ends in “I love you.” She also showed him the value of working hard, as she went from raising Nash in a one-bedroom apartment to a house.

Samatha consistently told Nash, “Always be in your kid’s life.” It stuck with him. He watched as Samatha was the only one working to provide for him, the only one taking care of him. He wasn’t going to let Kenleigh’s mom go through the same thing.

“I just abide by that because I see how my momma did and how she struggled to be a single parent,” Nash said. “I don’t want that to happen to the mother of my child.”

Not having a father growing up excited Nash for the journey. Soon after he received word he would be a dad, Nash thought of how he has looked forward to having a child most his life. He recalled all the mistakes he made in his youth, trying to figure out how he would have reacted if he was his father.

Nash learned life’s lessons from his mother. His understanding of the value

of fatherhood stems from never experiencing it.

And when Nash looks at Kenleigh, who bears a striking resemblance to Samatha, he can’t imagine not being there for her.

“She look so beautiful, she a beautiful child,” Nash said. “I just can’t be missing out, like my father did me.”

OBSERVATION Nash is used to knowing what to do, being in control. Having played four years of Big 12 basketball, regarded as the best conference in the country, it’s safe to say Nash’s basketball I.Q. is hard to top.

But when it comes to

being a dad, Nash is less of a knowledge-box and more of a sponge, soaking in all he can.

And like a waterlogged sponge, Nash’s mind is heavy when he hasn’t seen his daughter for a while.

His time with Kenleigh is the opportunity to squeeze out everything he has learned since her last visit.

He anxiously puts it into practice; he eagerly wants to know more.

When Kenleigh leaves with her mother to go back to Fort Worth, he starts soaking up all he can next visit. He kills time by See NASH Page 6 PAGE 5

There might not be a father Nash knows whose brain he hasn’t picked.

That includes two of his coaches, Travis Ford and Butch Pierre. Both are fathers and have a habit of checking in with Nash to see how Kenleigh is doing.

“There are people around me that are helping me a lot to make sure I do good by her and make sure I be a great father in my child’s life,” Nash said.

Ford is simply happy to see Nash take on fatherhood so enthusiastically.

In his 18 years of coaching, he’s had players who took the opposite route.

“I’ve been impressed with how much responsibility he tries to have, even while he is still in school,” Ford said. “He is so excited when she comes into town and he lets us know he is looking forward to it.

“He is looking forward to doing more.”

One lesson from Ford stands out above the rest.

When Kenleigh would start to cry, Nash assumed he did something wrong. Is she hungry? Is she mad? He asked Ford what he should do. Ford’s answer: Sometimes a baby just needs to cry.

‘A WIN EVERY DAY’ Samatha describes FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2015

her son as a beast on the court, but the kindest, sweetest, most gentle man once he steps off it. Nothing transitions Nash’s mindset faster than Kenleigh.

“It’s always good to see her face, she always make me smile,” Nash said.

“Even after my hardest times, I just look at her and she makes me smile.”

This was especially true after Oklahoma State’s home Bedlam loss. The Cowboys had blown a seven-point halftime lead, and Nash managed only 12 points. As a senior, as a leader, Nash felt the burden of the loss. He knew how much his team needed that win and, more importantly, he felt like he had let the fans down by losing a fourth-straight Bedlam.

But all the frustration and disappointment would soon vanish.

“When I got home, I got to saw her and it just made me forget about the game and move on,” Nash said. “That’s why I love her to death.

“With my daughter, that’s a win every day.”

Not only does Kenleigh put her father in a good mood after a game, she also gets him ready before a game.

“I got to see her before every game,” Nash said.

“I have to FaceTime her before every game to get my mind right.”

FINAL ACT, NEW CHAPTER Nash’s life is in 99th percentile. A black man from a single-parent home who will leave college after four years with a

degree, a wealth of experiences and zero debt, Nash is seizing a rare opportunity.

“I wanted him to go to college,” Samatha said. “I told him, ‘You have to be the best that you can be to get to college because Momma can’t pay for it.’

“Thank God basketball paid for college. And he’ll have a degree behind everything. Can’t nobody take that away from him.”

He’ll finish his career in the top-10 of most offensive categories and likely as the fourth all-time leading scorer in program history. He is only the seventh Cowboy to average double figures in all four seasons.

But for all his basketball accolades, Nash and Samatha view the degree in university studies he’ll receive in May as his greatest accomplishment.

“That will be something real special in her heart, like it will be in my heart,” Nash said. “People don’t look at me as an academic, so it’s something I can show off, showcase.”

Although, Nash’s lengthy career has come at a price. In an era of one-and-dones, NBA prospects who stay in college longer than a year are looked down upon. Along the way, Nash has seen his list of detractors grow by the year.

Once pegged as a lottery pick in the NBA Draft, Nash’s stock has slipped as people look for things to criticize, most notably his body language and a perceived attitude problem.

But those who know Nash best don’t buy in to

the criticism. They know that he would give them the shirt off his back if they asked him for it. They know he is the kind of guy who would hear of someone trying to donate shoes to Africa and proceed to give away more than 32 pairs himself, which he did for Samatha’s best friend shortly before he came to OSU. “With that big of name and that big of hype,

you’d expect a guy like that to feel like they need something or deserve something, kind of high maintenance,” said Keiton Page, who played with Nash for one season and worked with him the past three as a strength and conditioning coach.

“He’s the complete opposite. LB has always been a good teammate and the kind of guy that everybody clings to.”

Nash’s family was in Stillwater to watch his final home game Wednesday. As Nash walked onto the court, fans cheered as he accepted his framed jersey, and Kenleigh was with him, signifying the end of one chapter in life and the beginning of a new one that will be defined by more than basketball. sports@ocolly.com PAGE 6

Although the one true champion of the Big 12 is determined, the Cowboys still have plenty of questions left for themselves with one game remaining in the regular season.

Oklahoma State (18-11, 8-9) sits in sixth in the Big 12 men’s basketball standings. Regardless of what happens Saturday when they play West Virginia (22-8, 10-7), the Cowboys will finish sixth or seventh in the Big 12. But the difference between the two spots is immense.

Finish sixth and get a first-round bye before fac-

ing the No. 3 team, either Baylor, Oklahoma or Iowa State. Finish seventh and face a Texas Tech team that just beat the Cowboys 63-62 in Lubbock for the opportunity to play the No. 2 seed, which could again be Baylor, OU or ISU, with Kansas locked in as the first seed for the 11th straight year.

Honestly, OSU could snag the sixth seed without beating the Mountaineers.

The Cowboys’ fate might just rest in the hands of the Kansas State-Texas matchup, featuring the teams directly above and below OSU in the standings, respectively.

With a win, the Cowboys force KSU to win to put the Big 12’s series of tiebreakers into play. An OSU loss gives the Wildcats the six seed with a victory.

The Mountaineers won 73-63 on Feb. 21 in Stillwater. It was one of the four straight losses the Cowboys suffered prior to their 82-70 win over TCU on Wednesday night.

“Obviously, when you’ve faced them once before, you kind of have an idea,” junior guard Phil Forte said. “We know we have our hands

REBUILDING A REPUTATION From LSU reject to OSU star, the past is key to Anthony Hickey’s present.

To understand Oklahoma State point guard Anthony Hickey is to understand that he is someone who does not forget.

Hickey remembers all too well that meeting with LSU coach Johnny Jones last May. Jones called Hickey — a three-year starter for Tigers, an accomplished point guard who was third in the country in steals as a sophomore and led the SEC in assistto-turnover ratio as a junior — into his office.

Jones bluntly told Hickey that LSU would not be renewing his scholarship.

Despite his on-court acclaim, Hickey had a history of problems since Jones came to LSU in Hickey’s sophomore season. Hickey was suspended for an exhibition game and pulled from the starting lineup on multiple occasions his sophomore season. In December 2012, Hickey served a multi-game suspension for an academic issue.

Jones later questioned whether Hickey could ever become a leader.

“Most of it was my fault, the decisions that I made,” a reflective Hickey said Friday. “I owned up to it, and I just had to find a new home. It was tough. But it’s my responsibility. I put myself in that predicament, so I can’t blame nobody else.”

revolved around missing tutoring sessions and being late for team meetings. He was troubled and developed a bad reputation. But a reputation is not always the full reality.

“The thing with Hickey, I don’t think those things that he did depicted the person that he is, the player that he is, the teammate he is,” Andre Stringer, a former LSU teammate and friend, said in a phone interview.

This is the same Hickey who is known for honesty when he speaks, some Kentucky hill country still present in his voice. The same Hickey who is the son of a girls’ basketball coach, a smart player, a pass-first point guard. The same Hickey who has an unmistakably big heart. When his teams meet with children or host charity events, he’s not acting. He loves it.

Back in Baton Rouge, he developed a lasting friendship with a 9-year-old who has Cerebral palsy. Hickey still posts pictures with the boy to his Instagram.

This Hickey, though, was left seeking a team, searching for a home, praying for the almighty ideal of a second chance.

“I just didn’t know what was next for me,” he said. “I was getting calls from other schools, but it wasn’t the school I really wanted to call. I kept praying, asking God, you know, ‘Make the way for me.’… Then I get a call from Coach (Travis) Ford, and I was like, ‘OK, this is that call.’”

Hickey flew to Stillwater and was sold on the spot.

Thanks to the NCAA’s run-off waiver, he would be eligible immediately. He signed up for the task of being Marcus Smart’s successor and promised Ford he wouldn’t let him down.

Bringing Hickey to Stillwater was a gamble, after all. Ford was coming off a tumultuous season that saw his backup point guard, Stevie Clark, dismissed after two arrests.

But Ford craved an experienced point guard, and he trusted Hickey. Ford grew up 20 minutes from Anthony Hickey Sr.’s hometown. They played against each other in high school.

Hickey Sr. helped Ford’s father coach AAU. Ford briefly recruited Hickey out of high school, and Hickey was teammates with OSU forward Le’Bryan Nash in the 2011 Derby Classic Showcase.

So Hickey became a Cowboy.

And nine months later — with a crossover like Iverson, hustle like Rodman, a headband inspired

by Jonny Flynn and a touch of romantic heroism like Jay Gatsby — Hickey has emerged a better player and a more complete man.

TOUGH LOVE Hickey still remembers his harsh introduction to OSU’s summer conditioning program.

He came in thinking he was in good shape. He was wrong.

“I probably threw up

every day,” he said before the season.

Ford was quietly impressed with the work ethic and down-to-earth attitude Hickey displayed. Still, this was the beginning of a love-hate relationship that has molded Hickey for the good.

“Those first couple of weeks he was wondering, ‘What he has done?’”

Ford said. “At first I had to explain to him, ‘You just don’t get it. You can leave, or you can finish these and learn to get through it.’ His first two weeks of individuals he just really struggled.

By week four, he wasn’t missing a shot. He broke down the wall and pushed through the wall, and he learned a few lessons about life.”

This kind of trend has continued all season.

Ford recognizes Hickey’s potential. He also sees and exposes Hickey’s bad habits.

“He gets on me a lot about taking plays off,” Hickey said early this year.

“I try to hide sometimes, and he catches me every time. Away from the ball, I’ll chill a little bit, and I’ll hear him, ‘Anthony, you’re taking one of those breaks again.’

“Once I hear, ‘Anth…,’ I already know.”

But this isn’t the old Anthony Hickey. Even though he’s prone to argue or complain — a product of his passion more than anything — Hickey continues to adjust to Ford’s tough love.

Anthony Hickey found a new home in Stillwater.

“I just want to be successful,” Hickey said. “And you have to be coachable to be successful. … He’s making me a better person, not just a better player.”

Hickey also holds on to what fuels him. He’s obsessed with the concept of redemption. He lives to prove people wrong.

It’s even evident on his playlist. Hickey told KOCO News one of his favorite songs is Lil’ Wayne’s “I’m a Go Getta.”

The reason? It’s about a man who will never give up.

Hickey Sr. remembers when his young son was smaller and not quite as good as other kids his age.

One day, Hickey tugged

at his father’s pant leg and asked, “Why am I not starting?”

“I just said, ‘Son, you’re not that good,’” Hickey Sr. said. “That’s the hardest thing I ever had to tell him, but on the tail end of that I said, ‘You gonna have to get in the gym and work.’ From that point on, if there was a thing that you told him he couldn’t do, he did it.”

To this day, Hickey remains fiercely competitive.

“Everything he does,” OSU guard Jeff Newberry said. “You could say let’s read a book, who’s gonna read a book the fastest?

He’s gonna read that book the fastest.”

life centered on dreams of playing point guard at Kentucky. He wanted to be Rajon Rondo. He wanted to be John Wall.

But despite the Hopkinsville native being Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball as a senior at Christian County High, Hickey never heard from the Wildcats or coach John Calipari. UK signed the 6-foot-2 point guard Marquis Teague that year. The 5-foot-11 Hickey wasn’t all that heavily recruited. Only a two-star prospect, he signed with LSU, where some of his best games would come against the Wildcats.

That’s part of what creates the chip on Hickey’s shoulder. It also fuels his relationship with Ford, who — as a UK point guard in the early ’90s — just happens to be part of the lineage Hickey so deeply admired. “(Their relationship) is kinda like me and him,” Hickey Sr. said. “(Ford) is a fatherly figure to my son 9 1/2 hours away.”

Under Ford’s guidance, Hickey has excelled more than ever. He averages 9.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and two steals.

As the Cowboys enter season’s end on the NCAA Tournament bubble, try this for a scary thought: Where would they be without Hickey?

“Phew,” guard Phil Forte said, shaking his head. “Hick coming in has changed the dimension of our team so much.”

GROWING UP Despite his success, Hickey hasn’t forgotten his mistakes.

lagher-Iba Arena bleachers, hurried because practice is about to start, Hickey doesn’t hold back. He has a story to tell.

“I done been at the highest point where I was getting all the credit, and I done been knocked off my feet when I did wrong,” he says. “God gave me another opportunity.

“I think sometimes you gotta make mistakes in order to really get it. I think the mistakes I made made me the person I am.”

In Stillwater, Hickey keeps his nose to the ground. He focuses almost exclusively on basketball.

He said he makes it a point to spend most of his time with teammates, unlike at LSU, where he says he got mixed in with negative influences.

“When you develop a bad reputation, you gotta stay away from the wrong stuff,”

Hickey said. “I did everything I could do to get the real Anthony Hickey back.

So when people pull up Anthony Hickey, they don’t look up all the dirt.”

He’s also become a leader and a mentor. When Hickey arrived in Stillwater, teammates weren’t sure what to expect. But it didn’t take long for Hickey to win them over.

“I heard a lot of bad things about him, but I don’t look at him that way,” said Tyree Griffin, OSU’s backup point guard. “When he came here, he was one of the best people I knew.

He was teaching me to do everything better.”

Hickey also doesn’t forget those who hold his loyalties.

When Hickey got that first call from Ford, he immediately contacted Newberry. Newberry, a JUCO transfer, had visited LSU and become friends with

Hickey before eventually signing with the Cowboys.

“First thing he said was, ‘Come,’” Hickey said.

The interesting part: Newberry was on track to become OSU’s starting point guard.

“For him to tell me, ‘I know that you a senior, and we could use you,’ that shows the type of person he is,” Hickey said. “And if it wasn’t for Jeff, I probably wouldn’t even be here.”

Now, Newberry has carved his way into starting for the Cowboys as an undersized small forward.

He said he’s come to view Hickey as an older brother.

“I try to help Jeff in any way on or off the court,” Hickey said. “I been to the bad side. Being suspended, being out for games. I try to keep him away from that because that’s something that I been through. … I try to put that into a lot of

these guys, that you don’t want to go through the path that I went through.”

But Hickey’s education continues.

He was out of controversy all season until Saturday. Hickey didn’t start in OSU’s loss to Texas Tech (though he did play 29 minutes). Multiple sources said Ford sat Hickey after he was kicked out of a practice earlier in the week.

Hickey messed up. But in a Friday meeting with Ford, he still managed to show some of the maturity he’s gained.

“I told him, ‘Be even harder on me. That’ll make me lead even more, make me want to be at my best every day,’” Hickey said. “I told him I want him to be the hardest when he be on me.

“I always worry about myself a lot. He’s teaching me to put myself last.”

‘ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN A YEAR’ Anthony Hickey will always remember standing on the Gallagher-Iba Arena floor, smiling and cheering with a loyal student section that rushed the court after OSU’s 67-62 upset of thenNo. 8 Kansas in February.

That’s what he came to Stillwater to do. He wanted to check court-storming off the list.

“He put the cart before the horse,” Ford said. “He was hoping for the OU game. I said, ‘We might want to try to get a win first. Let’s put his in order here.’”

In a year of firsts — playing on a ranked team, experiencing a real rivalry, being a true leader, maybe playing in March Madness — that’s Hickey’s galvaniz-

ing moment.

“It gotta be the Kansas game,” he said. “It was the best feeling I’ve ever had.”

But this season is not over. Hickey desperately desires for OSU to make the tournament. More interestingly, he said another candidate for his top moment was Wednesday, when he will was honored on Senior Night against TCU. “Just get to see the people one more time,” he said. “I love seeing it in here, this orange. I never been in a packed out gym like this before. This is great.

“I read a quote that said, ‘Anything can happen in a year.’ This year could change my life. That’s how I look at it.”

When Hickey lifted his framed jersey Wednesday, it was the same name. The same man. But a different, more complete person than the one who threw up in summer workouts.

“He definitely changed a little bit, just from his attitude standpoint,” Forte said. “Coming in, you felt like he was trying to prove something. Not necessarily a bad thing, but he wouldn’t really listen to anybody.

Now he realizes he was given a chance, and he’s surrounded by guys who care about him, who want him to succeed.”

Once an LSU reject, briefly in college basketball exile, Hickey closes his career as an OSU success story.

“There’s always another way,” Hickey said. “You just gotta find that way.”

The biggest lesson he learned?

“Never give up,” he said.

MAPPING THE FUTURE The landscape of Oklahoma State University is undergoing yet another construction boom that is making major enhancements and changes to facilities across the Stillwater campus. These expansions, renovations and new construction projects are a direct result of the generous donors that contributed to the successful seven-year Branding Success $1 billion campaign. The campaign focused on raising funds for students, faculty, programs and facilities. Currently there are more than $200 million worth of projects in various stages of development, planning and construction.

These projects include spaces for teaching, student study and interation, and faculty offices; student residences and support; and infrasturcture upgrades. In addition to the impact these projects have on the campus they provide a significant economic boost to the local economy.

The CEAT undergraduate laboratory building is still in the design and planning stage. It will be located west of the Architecture Building. The facility, which is not pictured, will create a collaborative crossdisciplinary facility for undergraduate students. The Bert Cooper Engineering Lab (pictured, not seen on this map) is located in the far northwest section of campus. The completed but unoccupied 33,000 square-foot building will be used for structural and materials engineering testing.

Demolition and utility work will begin this 8 spring on the new Spears School of Business. The $76 million facility will create an identity and unified space for the college which currently has faculty and staff in four different buildings across campus.

The Atherton Hotel is undergoing a major upgrade that includes expansion of guest rooms and bathrooms.

A 30-foot tower addition 9 on the southeast corner of the hotel will feature a spacious new elevator, additional stairs and a relocated main entrance with drive-up access.

A staging area has not seen on map been set-up to begin construction of a 600-space parking garage near the southwest corner of Hester and University.

The garage will be located adjacent to the designated location for the future $60 million OSU Performing Arts Center. The PAC will greatly enhance the study, creation, performance and appreciation of music and theatre.

Local artist paints butterflies for Wings of Hope, undergoes personal metamorphosis Savannah Evanoff @SavannahEvanoff

For some, a butterfly represents a fleeting moment in summer or spring, when time and luck determine the chance sighting of this beautiful, whimsical creature.

Wings of Hope, a family crisis service, and artists such as Sarah DeYong, hope that a butterfly will remain a more permanent fixture that is symbolic of hope and transformation for years to come.

“As an artist I’d love to have something that lasts — to leave something behind,” DeYong said.

A BUTTERFLY REQUEST Over the years, Wings of Hope has embedded the butterfly symbol throughout Stillwater in painted statue form to raise awareness of domestic violence and break the cycle of violence through safety, hope and environment. Nancy Allford, butterfly project manager, has ordered more butterflies, gathered more artists and revitalized this goal.

“The butterfly is our symbol of hope and transformation,” Allford said.

“It is very important in domestic violence because it gives the hope of change, empowerment and a future.”

Last fall, Allford caught wind of DeYong’s artistic abilities and knew she was an ideal candidate to paint FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2015

Allford reached out to DeYong, who volunteered wholeheartedly to paint as many as requested.

“I’d seen the butterflies around town, and they were always very creative,” DeYong said. “I knew I wanted to do it.”

ARTISTIC ABILITY DeYong, a voice teacher at Oklahoma City University and site coordinator for the Oklahoma State Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), grew up in Stillwater and began art

at a young age.

As a young girl, DeYong would doodle all the time.

During the church sermon, she would draw the backs of people’s heads on the worship bulletin.

“You could actually recognize who it was by the back of their head,” DeYong said.

This natural ability led her to taking paint lessons from Pat Evans in downtown Stillwater and pursuing it further in high school art classes.

“I really like painting people and animals,” DeYong said. “I really try to capture the character of

my subject.”

DeYong has experimented with clay, sketching and sells her oil paintings on commission. But she says her first significant work was the drawing of a hand in the fifth grade.

“There is no such thing as bad art, it’s all about expression,” DeYong said.

SPREADING HER WINGS Thus far, DeYong has painted three small butterflies for Wings of Hope, each 15-by-15 inches.

Dianne, a member of the board of Wings of Hope, said she has a relative who needed the help of the domestic violence facilities and considers Wings of Hope near and dear to her heart.

“They wanted it to look like the pecan grove where Walter grew up,” Allford said. “It’s just stunning.”

The tabletop butterfly the Adams family now enjoys features Old Central, buildings on campus and the pecan orchard located at 12th and Adams.

“We have a long history here with Stillwater

and OSU,” Dianne said.

“Walter’s great uncles were some of the first students to enroll and graduate from OSU.” Having grown up in Stillwater, DeYong said she felt a special connection with their design choice and the experience was nostalgic to her.

“Pecan trees really do say Stillwater to me,” DeYong said. “I had a gorgeous pecan tree in front of the house where I grew up.”

The second butterfly undertaken by DeYong was her own personal design theme, “The Sound of Music.”

“It is the 50th anniversary of the movie and I’ve been watching it since I was tiny,” DeYong said. “It’s one that touches everyone’s hearts.”

The three butterflies will be on display at an upcoming Wings of Hope charity dinner, two of which will be for sale. Allford said special requests can be made for a butterfly and its design.

“Every painting I do is different,” DeYong said.

“That’s what I love about it.”

Small butterflies can be purchased for $500, and the large butterflies seen around Stillwater are 4-by4 feet and can be purchased for $3,500.

POM: Dancing ability lands Corley on ‘So you think you can dance.’

From Page 3 Corley danced her solo and a Broadway number with a group, but unfortunately, they were dropped and sent home.

“Vegas is more of a mental breakdown,” Corley said.

Despite being bummed she didn’t continue on to the top 20, Corley was proud of herself and grateful for the chance to audition.

“I met so many dancers that I still stay in contact with,” Corley said. “It was an incredible experience.”

OH, CAPTAIN Freshman year of college, Corley, a self-proclaimed nervous wreck, had another important audition: the OSU Pom Squad.

After learning a dance in one night with 50 girls, Corley had to perform it alone the next day.

Since her first tryout, Corley has been chosen as one of the 10-15 OSU Pom Squad dancers on the team every year and has enjoyed all of the orange pride-filled games.

“It’s an honor to be on the team because so many girls want that,” Corley said.

Corley said she loves being on the squad because she gets to have cool, unique experiences. She was even selected by Sports Illustrated as cheerleader of the week in 2014 and got to do a

photoshoot with a couple of teammates.

“The Pom Squad does a lot more than people think we do,” Corley said.

Although Corley claims she gets nervous every year during tryouts, it’s difficult to imagine considering the squad voted her captain this year.

Pom teammates and close friends Bethany Andrews, biochemistry senior, and Shayla Williamson, accounting sophomore, both said Corley is warm and inviting to everyone.

“She’s just like a bundle of sunshine,” Andrews said.

“She’s always happy.”

They said Corley loves jamming out to rap music in the car and can make almost any situation fun.

Addie and I got selfies with every mascot and sent them out on snapchat,” Andrews said. “It was really funny.”

The OSU pom coach, Beki Jackson, said Corley is one of those people that everyone likes and makes a good role model for the team.

“I love pom, and I love

cheering for games,” Corley said. “I wish I could do it for four more years.”

With three energetic practices a week and at least one performance or appearance, it is astounding that Corley has enough time for her school work.

“If I’m not going 100 miles an hour, I don’t know

what to do with myself,” Corley said.

Right now, Corley’s No. 1 priority is to graduate from OSU, but she knows she will never stop dancing.

“I don’t want to think of the day I’ll have to stop performing,” Corley said. news@ocolly.com

Blue Moon First Peach Ale

This is one of Blue Moon’s seasonal ales, and I’m a big fan. It’s pretty dark and really smooth. There are just enough peachy hints to make you excited about summer and enough darkness to bring you back to earth. I cooked some chicken in it this week, and let’s just say it was heavenly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this week I was feeling rather uninspired while picking my beers.

I can’t come to you with a clever theme this week. These are just a bunch of beers that I picked out while staring at my many options in the liquor store. So, I guess you could say these are the beers you can drink to get you through the last week before spring break.

Angry Orchard Cinnful Cider

If you’re a fan of Fireball in your cider but aren’t looking to get drunk, this is the cider for you. This Angry Orchard comes with a delightful addition of cinnamon — enough to taste and not overpower the crisp apple flavor.

Jack Daniel’s Watermelon Punch

This was a horrible mistake. I felt like I was drinking something that was soaked in corn syrup over night and then dyed pink. This is a little too much like candy for my tastes.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale

This bottle looked pretty cool. What was inside, however, was not as exciting as the bottle. It wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t say it was something that stands out in the crowd like most of Rogue’s beer. It was a pretty average ale, and there is nothing wrong with that.

'Chappie' looks to continue Blomkamp's winning streak Brandon Schmitz @OColly

“Chappie” hits theaters this weekend, hoping to capitalize on the momentum of director Neill Blomkamp’s first two efforts.

Set in a near future in

which oppressive robots patrol the streets, the film follows one particular droid — one whose programming is rewritten. The folks in charge view Chappie as a threat, though, for a selfaware machine often spells disaster.

Few first-time directors showcase as much promise as Blomkamp did with

2009’s “District 9.” I mean, is it too soon to call it a science-fiction classic?

In any case, the film excels through its heartbreaking reflection of South Africa’s decade-long racial segregation. Although it’s definitely not a requirement, some of the best sci-fi films serve as parallels for realworld events.

Remarkably, though, the movie is a ton of fun, too. Featuring inventive alien weaponry, gross-out creature feature sequences and thrilling set pieces, it’s a genre film lover’s dreamcome-true.

Blomkamp’s second outing, “Elysium,” meanwhile, is generally regarded as “merely good.” Although I

maintain that it’s an excellent film, possessing many of the elements that made “District 9” so memorable, others argue that “Elysium” becomes too caught up in its health-care message to tell a compelling story.

Regardless, Blomkamp definitely has an identifiable voice as a filmmaker.

Granted, “Chappie” looks as

if it’ll be more light-hearted, but his signature style seems to be on display.

Admittedly, a part of me hopes that he peddles back on the heavy themes this time around, if only because I feel as if artificial intelligence is well-trodden ground. news@ocolly.com

In the last five seconds of a blind audition on “The Voice,” two chairs whipped around to face the stage.

The spinning chairs of rap artist Pharrell Williams and country artist Blake Shelton turned around to signify their support of Corey Kent White, a Bixby native and a junior in business through Oklahoma State’s online education program.

White began singing in Oklahoma, at one point pursuing his degree in Stillwater. But writing lyrics in class made White realize his passion and led him to touring across the U.S., playing shows at universities and ultimately auditioning for “The Voice.”

White’s sweet southern voice singing “Chicken Fried,” by the Zac Brown Band during his blind audition scored a beckoning Christina Aguilera, two judges’ agreements to sponsor him on “The Voice” and an extremely proud

“It’s a Zac Brown song that I’ve played at every college show I’ve ever played,” White said. “It’s just something I’m comfortable with.”

It is no surprise that White’s smooth singing caught the attention of Oklahoma native Blake Shelton, the judge whom White chose to coordinate with for the remainder of his time on “The Voice.”

“I think that in my mind I had already made up my decision before I went on

that stage,” White said.

In an effort to win White on his team, Williams said, “I know you are from Oklahoma and I toured in Oklahoma.”

After seeing two judges had turned around in support, White seemed to take a sigh of relief, but only hesitated a moment before naming his choice.

“There’s just something about those boys from Oklahoma,” White said.

“I’m going to have to go with Blake.”

Although Garth Brooks, another Oklahoma native,

is one of White’s favorite country artists, he said he is very happy with his choice in coaches and excited to work with Shelton.

“He has really proved that he’s the kind of artist who has a sustainable career,” White said. “That is exactly my goal.”

White described Shelton as witty and funny, saying that Shelton is exactly the way he appears to be on television: authentic.

Now that White has made it through his blind audition, he will work with Shelton and compete in the battle round against his coach’s other artist choice.

“You will be treated with

the respect you deserve for the talent you have,” Shelton said.

An ongoing watch party in Bixby will be eagerly waiting to see White’s next television appearance.

It has been a tumultuous start to the season for Oklahoma State softball, but coach Rich Wieligman has the team rallying together as it returns home.

The Mizuno Classic starts Friday when the Cowgirls face off against Evansville at 4:30 p.m. and Connecticut at 7 p.m. These two games will mark the start of home play for the team after accumulating a 5-11 record in nonconference away games.

The Cowgirls are winners of two out of their last three, and that has the team going in the right direction.

“We’re getting into the part of our schedule where we can get a lot of momentum,” Wieligman said. “We are getting better in every aspect whether it shows in the wins and losses or not.

We’ve just got to get some momentum and put some wins together now.”

Wins have to be found.

“The key for this team is to figure out a way to win,” Wieligman said. “Pitching is always key and defense and hitting, but we just have to figure out a way to put a winning combination on the field in every game this weekend.”

“Any time you can get bases without giving up outs, I think that’s huge,” Wieligman said.

Wieligman also said, however, the team is still learning. Whether the team is learning how to steal bases, hit with more frequency or pitch with more precision, the team is young, with just two seniors on the roster, and it will have to be a process this season for things to finally start clicking.

With conference play now just a month away, the Cowgirls are continuing to work hard and stay together as a team. Wieligman, through the rocky start to the season, has emphasized the togetherness and continuity that this team must have in order to turn things around.

“It’s not always how you

start; it’s how you finish,” Wieligman said. “Nobody ever remembers the start when you finish well, so we’re concentrating on getting better and finishing strong this year.”

After more than a week, collegiate baseball will be back at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Friday’s game against Illinois was scheduled to be the No. 10 Cowboys’ seventh home game this season.

However, due to the unpredictable Oklahoma weather, it is only their second.

“We look forward to playing at home obviously,” coach Josh Holliday said. “In the meantime, we’ve learned how to play on the road a little bit better than most teams this time of year.”

Oklahoma State (7-4) has played well to this point in the season considering the lone home appearance.

Thanks to the cancellation of the UNLV series, the Pokes have had some time to prepare for Illinois (9-2-1) this weekend.

“The cancellation gave us some indoor practice time that we weren’t anticipating,” Holliday said. “We worked hard inside this week to get ourselves ready, and hopefully, the guys will be rested and sharp come (Friday).”

The Fighting Illini will not be easy competition for OSU. UI is only allowing opponents to score 2.25 runs per game, and it has yet to play a home game this season.

“They, too, have traveled quite a bit early in the season and challenged themselves,” Holliday said. “They’ll be a really good opponent and that’s good. We want to face good teams that have good players. That’ll help prepare us for the challenges of our conference season.”

Besides shortstop Donnie Walton’s wrist injury, the Pokes arrive at this point of the season injury-free, and they will look to take advantage of their health this weekend.

“We are in a good spot with our team in terms of health,” Holliday said. “Other than Donavan’s injury, our team is healthy and we are excited to compete. We look forward to everybody contributing.”

Oklahoma State University’s award-winning student newspaper has served Stillwater and the campus community since 1895. The O’Colly is a real newsroom that prepares students for a professional career in journalism.

We publish newspapers on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, during the school year.

We are online 24/7 with fresh content daily, breaking news, sports and more.

The O’Colly is independent from the university and entirely student run, with more than 100 students on payroll. A staff of four professionals advise, guide, educate and provide support.

The O’Colly is governed by the Student Media Board, which is made up of faculty, staff, students and Oklahoma media members.

In 2014, the O’Colly was honored for the third year in a row as Oklahoma’s best college newspaper by the Oklahoma Press Association.

Letters to the editor must include name, contact info and class/affiliation to OSU. Nonuniversity individuals must also include hometown.
