Walsh returns
Former Cowboy quarterback making his mark on the coaching staff
Chris Becker Staff Reporter For five years from 2011-2015 J.W. Walsh made an impact as the Oklahoma State quarterback. Walsh played mostly as a part of a two quarterback system playing in 33 games for the Cowboys. In his career he threw for 3,917 yards 36 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. However, he was also able to make a dent in the Cowboys running game where he rushed for more than 1,000 yards and had 25 touchdowns. After graduation, Walsh has bounced around the college ranks working his way up the coaching tree.
He started in 2016 at TCU as a graduate assistant, the next three seasons he spent as a running backs coach at Abilene Christian and then in 2020 he was an offensive analyst at Texas. Now he returns to his alma mater as a quality control coach. “J.W. (Walsh) is a loyal Cowboy and a tough player that’s wanting to get in this business and as I said a few years ago, most of the people that we hire that are tied into football are going to be former players,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. Walsh, although not the quarterbacks coach, is doing the majority of his work with the quarterbacks. Instead of doing the fundamental work with the quarterbacks, that is the job of quarterback coach Tim Rattay, Walsh is the leadership teacher amongst the quarterback room. See Walsh on pg. 4

IRS ruse targets students in efforts to steal personal information Maddison Farris News Editor Earlier this afternoon OSU released a statement warning students about another scam targeting college students. This scam involves an IRS impersonation ruse to trick students into sharing personal information and sensitive data such as social security numbers and even drivers lincense numbers. “The Internal Revenue Service today warned of an ongoing IRS-
impersonation scam that appears to primarily target educational institutions, including students and staff who have ‘.edu’ email addresses,” said the email alert from OSU news. For junior and double major in animal science and agriculture business, Morgan Truitt says there is enough going on in life at the moment and that this is just one more thing to worry about. “It makes me very angry that people would take advantage of us when we’re already in a financial crisis as a country,” Truitt said. “It just shows how evil people are, honestly. Like get off your butt and just go make money please.” Despite OSU having an email security system, these scams continue to flood student inboxes. This is on top of the continuing fake internship scam
and other ruses involving impersonations of government bodies or OSU personell. “People who receive this scam email should not click on the link in the email, but they can report it to the IRS. For security reasons, save the email using ‘save as’ and then send that attachment to phishing@irs.gov or forward the email as an attachment to phishing@irs.gov. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and IRS Criminal Investigation have been notified,” said the email alert. Students are urged to use caution when providing personal information and never give sensitive information to unknown sources. news.ed@ocolly.com

DON’T STUMBLE! (Part #3) “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate one another,” (Mt.24:9-10) All this I told you so that you will not go astray. (stumble) They will put you out of the synagogue, in fact a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.” (Jn.16:1-2) The are many places in the scripture that tell of persecution of true believers. Jesus said if they did it to me they will do it to those who follow me. (Jn.15:20) Many times this will separate the true believers from the false. No one likes hardships, difficulties and certainly persecutions, but the challenge comes and we don’t want to stumble and fall away.
Jesus speaks to the Smyrna church in Revelation: "I know your afflictions...slander...do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer...the Devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be careful..." Does God allow persecution and trials of different kinds? He certainly does! Couldn't God deliver them out of bad situations? Of course! Sometimes He will and sometimes not. He even governs how long the difficulties will last. These are times when we see the grace of God in wonderful ways. His grace is made perfect in weaknesses. (2 Co.12:9) That is why we are not to be offended at God's ways. Difficulties can seem to be hindering the very work of God, but the Lord is working in and through the situation to accomplish something good in the end.

Walk-off winners Trenkle delivers walk-off hit to beat OU Ryan Breeden Staff Reporter Caeden Trenkle stepped to the plate with bases loaded, bottom of the ninth in a 4-4 tie with in-state rival Oklahoma. Any result but, maybe a strikeout or hardhit grounder would certainly end it. In a 1-1 count, Trenkle got a fastball just below the knees, flicked his hands and lined it past the diving second baseman for a walk-off single, the second walk-off win this season for the Cowboys. “I thought I missed my pitch with the foul ball I hit before, but thankfully he threw me one right after that and I got the bat where it needed to be,” Trenkle said. “It was awesome getting to celebrate with my teammates like that, it never gets old.” The inning itself couldn’t have gone more perfectly. Josh Holliday decided to pinch hit Justin Campbell in place of Brock Mathis to start the inning, and that paid off when he roped a fastball into right field for a base hit. Campbell has delivered in clutch moments before, so the decision wasn’t a hard one for Holiday. He’s not just a pitcher, that’s for sure.
Hitting the game winning hit in the bottom of the 9th
Holliday’s mindset was also to use what he has and hope to end it then and there. Extra innings wasn’t a desire. “I’m glad that it played out the way it did, I don’t think either team had the pitching behind that at midweek to play one of those traditional extra-inning games,” Holliday said. After Campbell’s leadoff single, Jaxson Crull and Hueston Morrill put on a bunting clinic. Crull perfectly placed one between the pitcher and the charging third-baseman for a bunt single. Holliday isn’t surprised by the expertise from Crull, he’s been practicing that more than anybody else. “There’s not one player
on our team who takes advantage of the opportunities to better himself as a bunter more than Jaxson Crull,” Holliday said. He does it every day, he does it with intent and he works on the different angles of bunting.” Morrill followed it up with a bunt down the thirdbase line that he also legged out for a single. Bases loaded, nobody out. Just goes to show that even though it often goes unnoticed, bunting is extremely important and can be the difference in close games like Tuesday. “I give all the credit to those guys in front of me,” Trenkle said. “They made my job easy.” Tuesday’s win put Holliday at 300 wins in his coaching career. The fans
celebrated the achievement after it was announced and put on the massive video board in left field. There aren’t many better ways to hit that mark than in a walk-off Bedlam win. Holliday didn’t have much to say about it after the game, but his players weren’t shy in expressing what his achievement means to them. “It’s extremely special,” pitcher Brett Standlee said. “He’s a great coach, we love him to death and he would do anything for his players. There’s a lot of love and support in this community, and it’s very honoring and very humbling. It’s a special thing to be a part of that 300th win.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

sports Walsh... Continued from pg. 1 “When he was here he was all about leadership and doing things the right way and a tough guy. Just somebody you wanted to follow into battle,” offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. “As far as getting those guys to understand how they can be more vocal, be a better leader and project themselves the right way that’s what he’s all about. He’s done a really good job, so far for us.” Gundy said he has a list of around 27 former players who have reached out with interest to join the staff. Unfortunately there’s only a limited number of spots available on staff, but Gundy’s always looking to get them involved when they have an opening. “My goal is to have as many former players back coaching, operations, strength and conditioning, player personnel and anything that we have available,” Gundy said. “That means that they liked being here. They want to be a part of it. That’s a good thing.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
