Flyers crowd the bulletin boards on the walls in a brown building on Perkins Road. They wave in the wind as the door frequently opens. Some promote Alcoholics Anonymous classes. Others show employment ads from companies or give information about Social Security. The flyers, though, all provide resources available for the clients at Mission of Hope.

With an estimated 549,928 people recorded as homeless in a single night in the United States, according to endhomelessness.org, the City of Stillwater has a variety of programs and resources available to reduce this number at a local level.

In the eyes of Mayor Gina Noble, homelessness in Stillwater does not have a straightforward definition.

“I think when we live in this wonderful community and we go to our jobs and take our kids to school, it is real easy not to even think that we have homelessness,” Noble said.

“You don’t see it like you would in San Diego where people have shopping carts and are sleeping out on the beach. You don’t walk out in Stillwater and see it as often.”

Noble said sleeping on friends’ couches or not having a permanent place of residence can classify someone as homeless.

couple living in one of the city’s parks. Noble said stories such as this show how the number of homeless people in Stillwater remains an estimate.

“It’s something we’re very concerned about, … but we just don’t know,” Noble said.

Regardless of the extent of homelessness in Stillwater, Mission of Hope is a service to help those in need of a place to stay with the intention of eventually finding them a permanent home.

Founded in 1988, Mission of Hope is a 24/7 shelter for those considered homeless. The shelter is able to help people in three aspects: emergency, transitional and permanent housing. It specializes in helping women with children, veterans and the disabled.

Mission of Hope runs on funds from the U.S. Department of Housing

and Urban Development, but it also accepts donations of any kind, such as clothes, hygiene products, canned food and meat.

The most used portion of Mission of Hope is the emergency shelter. The shelter allows a client to stay free for 30 days.

There are stipulations with staying in the emergency shelter, Case Manager Audra Farrow said.

“Everyone who comes into Mission of Hope has to have a photo ID and social security card,” Farrow said. “They can have no violence-based convictions, any sexually-based convictions and they can have no active warrants.”

Although it is hard to pinpoint the exact number of homeless people in the city, Mission of Hope served more than 264 people in 2016, Farrow said.

Those who stay in the emergency shelter also

have to be actively looking for employment or applying for programs to help them find permanent housing. Mission of Hope has 16 beds for the emergency shelter, 10 for men and six for women.

It also has 10 transitional housing units that can house a family of four with laundry facilities, a kitchen and a food pantry.

Residents of transitional units are allowed to live in the unit for up to a year.

“We focus on getting their basic needs met so we can help them get into permanent housing,” Farrow said.

Through specific programs, people can find their permanent housing.

Farrow said finding housing can be challenging, especially in Stillwater because of the demand from college students and the high price of rent. Mission of Hope, though, has programs that help homeless

people find housing such as Emergency Solution Grants, which afford an apartment to a person with a job, Farrow said.

“We might pay the security deposit on their utilities, their rent and security deposit on their apartment so we can get them in there and they can start saving money,” Farrow said. “Then we case manage with them.”

Farrow serves as the case manager for each Mission of Hope client, regardless of his or her housing status. She assesses each client’s situation and formulates a plan for them to find a home.

Through a series of what Farrow calls “next steps,” Farrow and her client are able to pinpoint the issue preventing them from finding permanent housing. These types of issues can be drug- or alcohol-related, unemployment or underemployment, Farrow said.

“Whether or not they do their next steps will constitute whether they can stay,” Farrow said. “That just gives them that much more incentive, and I try to find resources for them, like parenting classes or computer classes.”

City Manager Norman McNickle said he believes Mission of Hope is benefiting many people who actively seek help. McNickle previously served on the Mission of Hope board and as the chief of the Stillwater Police Department. Both positions exposed him to the city’s homeless population.

“If a person does not want help, there is not a thing you can do to help them,” McNickle said. “In fact, most of the things you could do for that person are going to hinder them. I think that the shelter is sufficient for the population we have in Stillwater, and I think they do a great job.”

Mission of Hope also works with a community of services around Stillwater to find homeless people the proper help. Some of these resources include Workforce, which allows its users to prepare résumé and find jobs in the Stillwater area. Other outlets that assist people who are looking to escape poverty include Stillwater Cares and the Salvation Army, which frequently team up with Mission of Hope for donations and programs for the homeless.

Farrow, Noble and McNickle said it is important for OSU students to be aware of the homeless population in Stillwater.

“I think people should volunteer at least once in their life doing something they don’t really know about,” Farrow said. “If someone comes from a family who has always had a house and always had food on the table and have had love and support, this is a good place to come and see that that is not the case for everybody.”

A perfect storm of supply, demand and bureaucracy has put some Oklahoma State University hiring searches in question because of a backlog of visas.

Matt Stump, an Oklahoma City-based immigration attorney, represents OSU in preparing visa applications.

He said because H-1B worker visas are so popular nationwide, a nine-month backlog on processing the applications forced the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to suspend premium processing.

An H-1B visa is a petition for nonimmigrant, temporary resident status for foreign nationals for up to six years. After several years of increasing applications, USCIS is suspending premium processing to deal with the backlog.

Previously, Stump said OSU and other employers paid about $1,250 to speed up the process to fewer than 15 business days to bypass the backlog. But he said the systemic issues have finally hit a breaking point.

“For the most part we’ve had resource allocation issues at the various immigration service centers,” Stump said, “meaning we don’t have enough officers to adjudicate all those positions. … Keep in mind these service centers are fee-driven. They don’t get taxpayer money, so they’re run like a business.

two-month processing time slowly increased to be four months, five months, six months, eight months.”

Employers file for H-1B visa applications annually, Stump said, typically in the first days of April. The timing lines up with hiring searches for professors and researchers at OSU with fall start dates, Stump said.

After April 3, USCIS will suspend premium processing for up to six months.

The nine-month backlog

could make it “unfeasible” for hires to arrive by fall 2017, according to an OSU Human Resources email sent to deans, directors and department heads March 22.

For potential fall 2017 hires, an H-1B visa isn’t the only option available, despite its popularity.

Stump said because H-1Bs will be difficult for the time being, candidates will likely take advantage of options from F-1 student

visas or the North American Free Trade Agreement for applicants from Canada and Mexico.

Regina Henry, OSU coordinator of international programs, said OSU routinely pays premium processing fees for H1Bs because it gives the university and the candidate an answer faster. Although extensions and candidates who are not in a hurry for the fall won’t be affected, Henry said she hopes the

system rights itself.

“Hopefully we’ll catch up again and put the premium processing back into effect,” Henry said. “It’s for sure going to be six months, but it could be longer than that.

“I’m not sure they can catch up that fast.”

Stump said he agrees with the decision to suspend premium processing and work out the backlog but said it’s going to hurt industry and employers in the short term.

“There are definitely victims to this, but it’s an imperfect system,” Stump said. “We just have a tremendous amount of people trying to utilize the system, so these backlogs and suspensions of benefits is just a condition of existence in 2017.”

The N7 Youth Movement Field Day gathered 375 Native American children between third and eighth grade from across Oklahoma on Thursday.

The free event’s purpose was to encourage native children to be active.

Lana Duke, a nutrition junior and OSU soccer player, is the founder and director of the event at OSU. Duke, who is Chickasaw, said she organized the field day to create healthy living habits among native children.

“It’s important for Native American kids to be active and to get out of the house and be inspired through sport,” Duke said.

“That’s what the whole mission is of N7 is to ignite a generation to be educated and connected to the power of community and just to ignite them and get them moving.”

The Youth Movement comes as a counter to obesity rates among Native American children.

Duke started the annual field day two years ago after learning about the original event at the University of Oregon.

She coordinated with the Nike N7 campaign, which creates native-inspired products designed with tribal artists and leaders.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Native American Student Association partnered for the event.

An important component of the event was to honor Native American culture, Duke said. The inclusion of stickball, a centuries-old Native American sport, and tribal fancy dancing in the day’s

activities were a nod to longtime traditions.

“N7 stands for seven generations previously and seven generations ahead,” Duke said. “What we do right now impacts the seventh generation in the future but to also look seven generations back to remember where we’ve come from and our ancestors’ heritage.”

The field day’s schedule included stations where groups could participate in different sports and activities. UFC fighter and former OSU wrestler Johny Hendricks gave the keynote speech at the event. Hendricks, a member of the Otoe Missouria Tribe, encouraged the attendees to be the best they could be.

OSU student-athletes volunteered to lead ac-

tivities and play with the attendees. Nolan Boyd, a senior on the wrestling team, was one of several wrestlers who organized duals between kids on an orange mat at the center of the field.

“Personally, I just wanted to come out, help all the Native American kids and experience

what it’s like to be in this atmosphere,” Boyd said.

“I’m glad to be a part of it.

To be a Cherokee makes it even cooler.”

Haley Woodard, an entrepreneurship sophomore and OSU soccer player, served as the co-director of the event and helped draw student-athletes to volunteer. She said she reached out to friends and representatives of different teams, encouraging them to participate and bring teammates.

Getting to meet the athletes is special for children attending the event, Woodard said. For the athletes, it was an opportunity to give back.

“It’s easy for us as student-athletes to take for granted everything that we get and what we get to do,” Woodard said. “This is a very kind of humbling experience to see we have people that look up to us.

It’s not just about being on the court or on the field.

It’s about what you can do for your community.”

Woodard will take over as the director of the field day next year with

an assisting co-director, ensuring someone will be prepared to organize the event for years to come.

Bunky Echo-Hawk, a Native American artist from Pawnee, said he was first introduced to the Youth Movement Field Day through his children, who participated in the event Thursday.

Echo-Hawk, who designs N7 apparel, said he hopes the field days continue at OSU so native children can interact with role models and be exposed to higher education.

“They have this opportunity to come here to Oklahoma State and to see the campus and to be here in the athletic department,” Echo-Hawk said. “Seeing the native athletes that are college students here inspires them a lot, makes them think that there’s something really good for them after high school.”

The International Student Organization is bringing several cultures to Stillwater during its Cultural Night.

Cultural Night’s theme is “Festivals Around the World,” and it will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Seretean Center. The event will feature eight performances from area clubs in ISO. Six guest performances will also take place throughout both nights of the event.

is meant to showcase cultural talents from all areas of the world. Huff said performances consist of songs, dances or skits, depending on how clubs interpret the theme.

Huff said clubs are placed into two categories: small and large. The first half of the event will feature small clubs, and the large clubs will perform after a short intermission. Huff said a people’s choice award will be announced Saturday night as well as a winner from both categories.

“The pride of winning this competition means more to them than

anything else,” Huff said.

“They’re doing it because they take pride in their heritage and culture.

They want to present that out there.”

Krishani Rajapaksa, co-cultural coordinator, performed in last year’s Cultural Night with the Sri Lankan Students Association. She said the

association practiced nine hours each week for five weeks while preparing its performance. The group won first place, and she said it was a “magical moment” for her.

Although Rajapaksa said she misses some aspects of performing, she wanted to experience Cultural Night from a leadership perspective.

Rajapaksa said every aspect of the event requires a lot of time and preparation. However, she said her co-coordinator, other officers and her advisers have helped guide and support her throughout the process.

Rajapaksa said she has

established connections and expanded her knowledge while preparing for the event.

“You get to know a lot of people from different countries,” Rajapaksa said. “That’s one of the biggest advantages I have after joining ISO.” Raghav Nargotra, ISO president, said his experiences in ISO inspired him to run for president.

He said he appreciates the perspectives and opportunities the organization has given him to interact with new people and he has made new friends from many different countries, making his time with ISO a fun and

rewarding experience.

Nargotra encouraged people to widen their horizons and come to the event.

“You come out to support your friends,” Nargotra said. “You come out to see new culture, and you come out to make new friends.”

At Oklahoma State University's Veterinary Medical Hospital, clinical faculty have successfully performed two different procedures for the first time. One corrected a congenital heart problem in a sheep and the second placed a subcutaneous ureteral bypass port in a cat to treat a kidney blockage.

Yoda, a 15-month-old therapy sheep owned by Ranch Hand Rescue Counseling Center and Animal Sanctuary in South Argyle, Texas, had a congenital heart problem called a patent ductus arteriosus or PDA. A PDA is a blood vessel that allows blood to bypass the lungs. It should close at birth; however, Yoda’s was still open 15 months later.

Dr. Ryan Baumwart, board certified veterinary cardiologist, tried a minimally invasive procedure to correct the PDA using a catheter. However, the blood vessel was too large. Dr. Danielle Dugat, board certified small animal surgeon, secured a suture around the PDA and tied it down, closing the vessel completely. Blood was prevented from passing through the shunt pathway and Yoda’s murmur disappeared. He is expected to live a full, happy and healthy life.

Danielle Dugat, DVM, MS, DACVS, holds the Cohn Family Chair for Small Animals. A board certified veterinary small animal surgeon at OSU’s Veterinary Medical Hospital, Dugat earned her DVM degree from OSU in 2007.

In addition to seeing patients, Dugat teaches veterinary students, mentors house officers, and conducts research.

The Cohn Chair provides funding that will help expand research, teaching and educational opportunities in both small animal medicine and surgery.

Rob Walton is putting together a puzzle with missing pieces, and he wants to know what it looks like when it’s whole.

Walton, the Oklahoma State baseball team’s pitching coach, has spent the majority of this season without several of his top arms available to him, as right-handers Trey Cobb and Jensen Elliott and lefthander Parker Scott have been sidelined with injuries in their throwing arms. The ailments have pushed pitchers into roles Walton didn’t have planned for them as the

season began. He identified the trio as OSU’s top three pitchers behind Friday starter Tyler Buffett.

“If we were at full tilt, you’re feeling a lot better going in,” Walton said. “As a coach, you’d like to see what the potential could be if everybody’s in the right roles.”

Cobb, a senior, is fully re-

covered from a broken bone in his right elbow and is set to make his 2017 debut at some point this weekend against West Virginia (13-9 overall, 2-1 Big 12), Cobb and Walton told the O’Colly.

After spending most of the year as a pseudo-bullpen coach, Cobb will work an inning at a time out of OSU’s bullpen as the Cowboys (15-9, 0-3) work to ensure he remains healthy.

Cobb was one of two Cowboys to reach 100 strikeouts last season, splitting time as a starter and closer.

“It’s fun to be excited to go to the field,” Cobb said.

“Not that I wasn’t excited

to come to the field, but to have that thought in my head, like, ‘Oh, I can throw today. I can make an impact on this game,’ that’s exciting. That little nervousness you get before a game, that’s back.”

Walton, who dealt with shoulder injuries over the course of his playing career, said he knows the impact they can have on a pitcher.

“Whenever you have physical problems, you have that to deal with, and then the mental anguish of not being able to play, it’s tough,” Walton said. “For anybody to do something you love to do and then not be able to do it, it’s tough on

your mind. I’m happy for him.”

Neither Elliott nor Scott has pitched since the Cowboys’ March 12 doubleheader against South Dakota State. Elliott gave up three runs in six innings, throwing 126 pitches, in the opening game, while Scott started the second and exited after one batter.

Neither is expected to pitch this weekend, with Walton describing their arms as “tight.” Freshman right-hander Jonathan Heasley will start Saturday, with junior right-hander Blake Battenfield starting Sunday.

Since losing Parker and Elliott, OSU has posted a

2.77 ERA while going 6-3 but was swept by TCU to begin Big 12 play. Their returns will slot others into planned roles and afford the Cowboys more depth.

“I don’t think there’s anything structurally wrong with them,” Walton said.

“Knowing when you throw balls like those kids do, you’re hoping that whatever it is, it is minor. Looks like that for them, but they also take time to heal and progress.”

Kenny Gajewski doesn’t have a concrete definition of success.

Gajewski, the second-year coach of Oklahoma State’s softball team, won two Women’s College World Series as an assistant at Florida. He played baseball for Oklahoma and was part of its 1994 national championship team.

Despite spending time at the pinnacle of multiple platforms, Gajewski said success means something much broader than championships or wins on a field.

“I think at times, our kids forget that this is much bigger than just softball,” Gajewski said. “I think they get caught up in how they’re playing. And when they start to put too much value on the result, they start to really struggle.”

Instead of having the players invest all their energy into what happens at the plate or in the circle, Gajewski stressed the importance of representing the team whenever they exit the clubhouse doors.

Doing well in school, doing the right things and being a good person and teammate are all attributes that embody “the Cowgirl way,” something Gajewski mentioned after the Cowgirls (22-11 overall, 3-0 Big 12) capped off a sweep against Texas on Sunday.

Gajewski gathered his team in a huddle in left field with a message ahead of OSU’s three-game series against Kansas (19-14, 1-2).

“You put yourself in a great place, but when Kansas comes to town, they don’t care,” Gajewski said.

“We gotta continue to earn respect.”

Although they are unranked, the Cowgirls earned respect in the latest ESPN. com/USA Softball rankings, garnering nine votes. Only three teams not in the nation’s top 25 earned more.

Shea Coats, a senior from Tuttle, said overall team camaraderie is a reason for OSU’s recent success.

She said there aren’t strict leadership roles on the team; everyone comes together as a unit.

Bayless, who experienced immense success in two seasons at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, including a .621 batting average in 2016, said she feels as if she is in a slump at the plate.

“Her idea of a slump and my idea of a slump are two completely different things,” Gajewski said. “I think she’s in as good a place as she’s been since the fall.”

The Cowgirls are a mere 10 wins behind last season’s total with 22 games left.

Although maintaining their winning ways on the field is important, maintaining a level mindset is equally as crucial.

“I don’t take anybody for granted in this league, not one team,” Gajewski said.

“I don’t know why our girls would think anything other than ‘This is a good team.’

And that’s the way we’re gonna approach them.”
