OSU campus experiences power outages Sunday morning Ellen Slater Staff Reporter

On Sunday morning multiple power outages were reported in buildings on Oklahoma State University’s campus. Among these reports were numerous residential halls. At 8:30 a.m. over 15 buildings were without power. The problem was on-going and the cause was unknown. Residents were uncomfortable without power in their dorms for so long, especially on Sunday, a day many students spend a lot of time to study and catch up on weekly assignments. “When I woke up and heard my fan turn off at 8 a.m. I was very upset,” Crowe said.

OSU has its own power grid, separate from the city of Stillwater. The grid is located on Hester Street and Hall of Fame and provides an internal power source for the campus. The Colvin Recreation Center also lost power. They released a statement that said that the “power has been restored and the Colvin Recreation Center will reopen at 1 p.m.” The cause of the power outages remains unknown and the story is still developing. Things seem to be back in order, for the most part, this evening, but facilities management has been unavailable for comment. news.ed@ocolly.com

New Royalty By Jessie Hernandez Staff Reporter On the exciting evening of March 27th, we said farewell to the reigning OSU Mr. and Miss. Hispanic/Latinx as they took their final walk and welcomed new royalty. Keeping tradition alive, Francisco Hernandez and Yasmin Flores earned their title. The show consisted of six contestants who competed in the following events: cultural wear, talent, an evening wear showcase and an extemporaneous question. Winner Franciso Hernandez performed an original song on his guitar blowing the audience away, while Yasmin Flores put on a fun magic show which kept the audience on their toes. Hispanic roots through her art, and Diego Diaz kept the humor alive through his performance of the song Tequila. After the exciting competition and the crowning of new

royalty, Yasmin Flores expressed her thankfulness for the opportunity she was given. “I feel extremely blessed to have been given this opportunity by the Hispanic community and everyone

sexual assault and help young women and men alike. “I am really trying to start my own organization on campus called The Prevention,” Flores said. “It will be primarily focused on the Hispanic community but not limited to them, that way everyone can benefit from these resources.” The new Mr. Latinx is more than enthusiastic about his new role and the possibilities that come with it. “I want to promote inclusion and invest their attention here at OSU. To do that I would like to create an extra safe space, a middle man you could say. I have friends who dropped out and friends who were too afraid to start, so I would like to create that space that

Coordinator of Hispanic/ Latinx affairs Rey Marrufo expressed the challenges they faced to make the event happen. “We had to explore new avenues and keeping everyone socially distanced and safe was a challenge but our priority,” Marrufo said. “We had an outstanding show, I am completely proud of the students. How much work they put in these last couple of months and how much they developed, that was one of the most beautiful things. Whether they win or lose, they take something from this. These are tools they can use later on in life, confidence, public speaking, or how to interview. (stumble) They will put you out of the synagogue, in fact a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.” (Jn.16:1-2) The are many places in the scripture that tell of persecution of true believers. Jesus said if they did it to me they will do it to those who follow me. (Jn.15:20) Many times this will separate the true believers from the false. No one likes hardships, difficulties and certainly persecutions, but the challenge comes and we don’t want to stumble and fall away.

Jesus speaks to the Smyrna church in Revelation: "I know your afflictions...slander...do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer...the Devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be careful..." Does God allow persecution and trials of different kinds? He certainly does! Couldn't God deliver them out of bad situations? Of course! Sometimes He will and sometimes not. He even governs how long the difficulties will last. These are times when we see the grace of God in wonderful ways. His grace is made perfect in weaknesses. (2 Co.12:9) That is why we are not to be offended at God's ways. Difficulties can seem to be hindering the very work of God, but the Lord is working in and through the situation to accomplish something good in the end.

Encarnacion-Strand brings his own power to O’Brate Stadium Ben Hutchens Staff Reporter Sunday was reflective of the type of tear Christian Encarnacion-Strand has been on. The sophomore JUCO transfer who tore up the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference a season ago has transitioned to the Big 12 just fine. Encarnacion had two hits, including a home run, on Sunday against Kansas State in the Cowboys 8-2 sweep clinching win. He is hitting .600 over his last seven games and has three home runs. His recent surge has come against two Big 12 teams, Texas Tech and KState, which is his first ever taste of Big 12 baseball. “I see a player who in the last two weeks is starting to settle down and do on a consistent basis a lot of really special things,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said. “He showed you great glimpses early in the year of what his talent is capable of producing

and I see him settling in and trusting his abilities.” EncarnacionStrand has started every single game for the Cowboys this season and leads all players with more than a handful of appearances with a .330 batting average. “He’s been a great asset to our team all year as you guys have seen,” OSU outfielder Carson McCusker said. “He gets some big hits at times we need them and helps us score some runs. He’s unbelievable on defense as well, every series before that he’s been really good to have on our side.” EncarnacionStrand’s moments have been memorable. In Friday’s game against the Bat Cats, he hit a home run over the O’Brate Stadium scoreboard in left field. Every time he steps up to the plate, fans hold their breath. “It brings energy to the team, obviously it all counts the same but when they go further, they feel like they count for more. The guy is a stud and it’s fun to watch him play every day,” OSU pitcher Justin Wrobleski said. sports.ed@ocolly.com

sports Wrobleski deals and Cowboys clinch the sweep of the Wildcats

Sunday and the whole series. This was the first series this month the Cowboys clicked in all aspects of the game. They limited errors, had elite pitching and the bats were making solid contact. “I thought Friday was the best we’ve been all year, against one of the finer pitchers we’ve faced all year,” coach Josh Holliday said. “I think we did a good job of tiring out their starting pitchers down more so in games one,two and three than we have all year.” The Cowboys had lost six of eight coming into the Big 12 matchup, but turned around their skid with a well-timed sweep with two more tests on deck for OSU. The Cowboys play Oklahoma on Tuesday and then a three-game series against West Virginia starting Thursday. Despite the losing skid prior to the sweep the Cowboys stayed confident through it all. “It’s all about not letting those kinds of things get you down,” left fielder Carson McCusker said. “Just keep looking ahead.”

Justin Wrobleski flew through seven innings with only one hit and two runs to blemish his performance on the mound in OSU’s 8-2 sweep clinching win against Kansas State. Kansas State didn’t record a hit off of Wrobleski until the seventh inning when Zach Kokoska hit a solo home run to cut the Wildcats’ deficit to 8-2. Wrobleski’s season hasn’t been the best in terms of wins and losses (1-2), but he’s been able to limit run damage and dominate the count. That continued Sunday. Wrobleski’s seven innings showed him strikeout nine, giving up only two runs and only one hit. “I was just trying to make pitches like everytime I go out,” Wrobleski said. “Just work my way through both mentally and physically.” OSU’s offense was big on sports.ed@ocolly.com

Sam Hutchens Staff Reporter Oklahoma State simply played like itself. When you are a top-10 team in the country, that is a good thing. No. 10 OSU beat Kansas 12-0 on Sunday in a runrule victory. The win gives OSU (26-5) a winning conference record and the series victory. They got the victory through excellent pitching from senior Carrie Eberle and electric batting. “Here today, Carrie was Carrie, and our bats were what we feel like they can be,” coach Kenny Gajewski

The Cowgirls struggled earlier in the series and dropped the first game on Friday night. Gajewski said the 5-inning shutout victory on Sunday did much to make the series a success, and the bus ride back to Lawrence more enjoyable. “Great way to finish the weekend out, to get the series win,” Gajewski said. “Friday night I was probably as disappointed and irritated as a coach could be in our staff. We laid an egg and played about as bad as we could possibly play with five errors.” In this game, OSU returned to form typical of a team of their caliber. The Cowgirls scored in the first four innings of play, punctuated by a 6-run third inning that featured yet another “Bus-bomb.” In that inning, senior Haley Busby drove a pitch over the right field wall with two runners on. The home run was her tenth of the season, and served to put OSU in great position. The entire OSU offense showed what it was capable of in the final game of the series. Nine Cowgirls had at least one hit in the

game. The left side of the infield showed some pop. Both junior shortstop Kiley Naomi and senior third baseman Sydney Pennington had home runs. With the game in hand, senior pitcher Logan Simunek entered to work a clean fifth inning and multiple Cowgirls came off the bench to hit and pinch run. Everyone on the team looked sharp, and it showed on the scoreboard. “It was really fun to watch, and to get almost everyone in this game was a really good sign,” Gajewski said. “(That is) the way good teams finish out.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
