With the recent announcement of the closure of Drummond Hall, one piece of the historic dormitory faces an uncertain fate.

After 52 years of service, Drummond has become a part of Oklahoma State University’s history. One aspect of Drummond’s history is the baby grand piano residing on the second floor of the Kerr-Drummond Mezzanine.

Few might recall when Elton John played

a concert on the KerrDrummond piano in then-Gallagher Hall on Nov. 1, 1973.

Rex Horning, an OSU alumnus, was a student at the time of the concert.

“I was finishing my freshman year at OSU,” Horning said. “During that period, there was some kind of a program like the Fifth Dimension. They would bring these pretty kind of popular groups into Gallagher. When Elton John came it, was kind of a big deal, but it wasn’t the deal. It was

something to do more or less.”

Horning said John drew a sizable crowd, but he doesn’t remember it being a raucous, packed house.

John performed with fellow a British group named “Family.”

“He put on a great show,” Horning said.

“But when you left, it was, ‘Hey, that was fun.

We had a good time.’

But it wasn’t, ‘Wow, this is a history-making thing,’ like if you’d seen The Beatles. But boy, he became so big right after that.”

Kent Sampson was the assistant director of Residential Life at the time. He said the KerrDrummond piano was chosen simply because it was available.

“We got a call from the folks at the arts committee who were bringing him here,” Sampson said.

“They said, ‘We need a piano, and they don’t have one for us in the music department, and we know you have a baby grand.’ They had to take the doors apart to get it out because it was so big.

It took six to eight guys to get it out into the truck to get it to Gallagher.”

“It was set at an angle,” Horning said. “He was playing. He was kind of at an angle the whole time. And man, he was banging on it just like he

does now. He was really working it.”

Sampson said he distinctly remembers a moment in the show when John got up and danced on the piano.

“I remember, because

after the show, some of the students came up to me, and they were kind of upset,” Sampson said.

“And they said, ‘We didn’t like him dancing on our piano.’”

Former Daily O’Collegian fine arts reporter Pat Upton wrote a review of John’s performance, describing John as “clad in a shimmering, green fluorescent tuxedo with tails and sporting 2 to 4 inch high wedges.”

The piano has been a part of OSU’s history for a long time. Horning said he remembers the piano in the KerrDrummond lobby when he lived there during his freshman and sophomore years.

bers the piano distinctly down there,” Horning said. “Somebody was always kind of dinking around on it. It was kind of an open chair.”

The Kerr-Drummond piano is more than a century old, Sampson said.

“It is the oldest continuous piece of operating equipment on campus,” Sampson said.

“I think it’s between 105 and 107 years old. It was originally given to KerrDrummond by the music department when they got a new one.”

Shannon Baughman, the associate director of operations for Residential Life, said her organization will move the piano to a different residence hall.

“We are going to keep the piano within residential life,” Baughman said.

“It is part of our legacy.

We currently have pianos in Parker, Wentz, Stout and Bennett halls. We will keep it; we just have not determined yet where it will go.”

Horning said he agrees the piano should be preserved.

“Stuff like that is kind of pop culture, but in a way, it has a significance to it,” Horning said. “It’s emblematic of an era at OSU.” Ellie Melero is a multimedia journalism freshman from Kansas. She can be reached at emelero@okstate.edu.

To become governor, Cornett said he needs support from the younger generation in Oklahoma City.

Cornett said he wants to use his connections with millennials and support he gained as mayor to advance the future goals of what he called “an extremely ambitious, youthful generation.”

“Every time I see a millennial with a cellphone, I think to myself, they’re probably

starting a business,” Cornett said. “That’s how entrepreneurial that generation is, and it gets me very excited, because what I see are more and more jobs going to be created by (the millennial) generation.”

Chuck Hall, a state senate candidate and chairman and CEO of Exchange Bank & Trust, said he sees Cornett as a guide many millennials can look up to. “(College students) are looking for hope, and they’re looking for leadership,” Hall said. “I think Mick Cornett brings both.”

Along with the entrepreneurial ways of young people in Oklahoma, Cornett

said he sees the state as an innovative place to live in, making the ambitions of a younger generation one of the priorities in his campaign.

“We’re a very entrepreneurial state,” Cornett said.

“I would think that my support amongst millennials in Oklahoma City would translate across the state. I get it, and I have an idea of what they’re looking for and am trying to create it.”

As the conference season gets closer, the Oklahoma State men’s tennis team works hard for the final preparation.

and has posted a 5-3 record against top-25 teams this season.

“The conference matches have a little bit more importance on it,” Udwadia said.

“It doesn’t really affect the way we train. We are not going to train harder; we are just going to train smarter.

It is the time of the season we play a lot of matches. We have already been tested, so we just want to make sure we are not overtrained, but we are going to manage to train enough.”

“I have been injured for a few weeks,” Cash said. “We spoke back from the match against Tulsa to whether I can take the rest. (Udwadia) decided this is the best way to get me the full week to take time off and do the right rehab and get fully rested.”

After sweeping Hawaii, the Cowboys stayed in Maui for two additional days without taking part in any practices.

Udwadia said the trip provided the players a much-needed break.

“It is hard to find breaks in the season because we play so many matches,” Udwadia said. “The last two-and-ahalf days (in Hawaii), we basically put the racquet away and let the guys get refreshed for the season.”

The main and most impressive character is the patriarch of the family, John Paul Getty

(Donald Sutherland).

Sutherland, a talented thespian, captures the raw emotion and coldheartedness it takes to portray a man like this.

Getty is a brilliant businessman whose family constantly sucks up to him while they hurl insults behind his back, but those qualities tend to take a back seat to his serious character flaws of almost sociopathic emotional tendencies.

Other characters, such as his grandson John Paul Getty III (Harris Dickinson) and his fixer James Fletcher Chace (Brendan Fletcher), we don’t get to see that often, which is fine, because for a story like this to start strong, it must start off a dive into this world.

A title such as the one above should provide all one needs to know before jumping into this

Watch ‘Trust’ Channel: FX When: 9 p.m. Sundays

world. It left me as a viewer wanting more yet feeling a bit sick of myself for even being in the same room (figuratively of course) as John Paul Getty. I have complete confidence and aspirations that this series will provide a well-detailed, symbolic and simply brilliant dive into this world.

Just through the first episode, one gets a clear look at the lavish perks of a family like this, yet at what cost it tolls emotionally and physically on the family, and I can’t wait for more.
