After making his way through all of his notifications, Mike Boynton finally found the time to call his dad.

Michael Boynton Sr. was working at FedEx and hadn’t yet heard his son was named Oklahoma State’s 20th men’s basketball coach. Boynton described his dad as a “siren” because he loves to talk.

“I’m like, ‘I got 90 seconds, but I want you to know this: I was just named the head basketball coach at Oklahoma State,’” Boynton said. “I don’t even think he wanted to talk to me anymore as much as he wanted to spread the news. He was just screaming, and I couldn’t hear anything.”

The past week has been a whirlwind for Boynton.

text about an impromptu team meeting. A bit later, while still in Oklahoma City, he saw on Twitter that Underwood accepted a job at Illinois.

his children, Ace and Zoe, Boynton was named OSU’s new coach.

Boynton’s position opened after Underwood left to coach the Illini the day after OSU’s NCAA Tournament loss to Michigan on March 17.

for the Cowboys during Underwood’s only season in Stillwater after serving under him for three seasons at Stephen F. Austin.

Boynton told reporters Saturday he felt good about his interview for the position Thursday, but he felt the same about his

interview with SFA after Underwood left in 2016.

“You never know,” Boynton said Saturday. “I didn’t think there was any chance I wasn’t getting the Stephen F. Austin job last year.”

While Boynton was on staff, SFA won 89 games in three seasons, and he said he thought it made sense one of the assistants would get the job Underwood left vacant.

However, SFA hired OSU alumnus Kyle Keller, who had been an assistant at Texas A&M. Before SFA, Boynton spent time as an assistant at South Carolina, Wofford and Coastal Carolina.

Boynton, from Brooklyn, New York, played at South Carolina from 2001-04. He was on the Gamecocks’ last NCAA Tournament team before this season’s team, which reached the Final Four on Sunday. The journey has taught him discipline.

Every February, Boynton does something to train that discipline.

The past five years, he has eaten only fruits, veg-

etables and nuts during the month.

“I believe that discipline is a skill,” Boynton said. “I really believe that.

Anything that you want to be good at, you gotta work at it. So, every February, I commit myself to doing something really hard for the entire month.

“March 1 is my favorite day of the year.”

Boynton said one year, he lost 29 pounds during the month, but this year, he “only lost like 17.”

Boynton said he likes that Stillwater is a smaller community and it’s good for his family.

“I could literally get anywhere in 10 minutes,” Boynton said. “In Brooklyn, in five minutes, you could barely get out of your driveway. Well not your driveway, out of your parallel parked car ’cause there’s a car literally on both of your bumpers.”

Although he might not be as busy as the streets of Brooklyn, his week has been hectic.

Mike Boynton deserves the same amount of support from Oklahoma State basketball fans Brad Underwood initially had.

After sitting with Boynton for little more than an hour Saturday, I can

see how he could kill his interview and why he got the job.

Boynton is personable.

I learned more about the person Mike Boynton in the hour I sat with him than I learned about the person Brad Underwood in the numerous availabilities I went to during his 362 days in Stillwater.

I know Boynton’s wife, Jenny, is a dietitian. I know he grew up in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and the first time he took Jenny there he told her how rough it was only to find it cleaned up and an Abercrombie & Fitch in the area.

I know where his children, Ace, 4, and Zoe, 1, go to daycare. I know Boynton’s father, Michael Boynton Sr., delivers packages for FedEx. It’s not a bad thing Underwood didn’t always delve into his personal life, but know just because Boynton came from Stephen F. Austin with Underwood, they are different people. Fans’ disgruntled emotions for Underwood should not be placed on Boynton.

And no, Boynton might not have the loyalty to the school Doug Gottlieb has right away, but Athletic Director Mike Holder and

the Board of Regents gave Boynton his first chance to be a head coach. Boynton interviewed to be SFA’s coach after Underwood left the Lumberjacks last year. He said he felt good about his SFA interview and thought he was getting the job, but he didn’t.

People are upset OSU didn’t hire another bigname, mid-major coach.

OSU did that last year, and now it is in this situation.

So, why not try something different?

“I think when they sorted through the candidates, they felt strongly that there was someone right here that was very

capable of doing the job,” Boynton said. “This is going to come out, publicly, as ‘They’re not committed to it.’ I think they’re very committed to it.

“Once they got in a room with each of us, they felt that I was the best guy.

I think I won the job.”

He sounds like a man willing to give this school his best shot. The players seem to be on board with him with congratulatory social media posts, so the fans should be, too.

“I’m 35 years old,” Boynton said. “I’ve never been a head coach before.

God may show you things he wants to accomplish through your life, or he may show you purposes he plans to do in others, or in situations around you. So many times it will seem impossible, but if God has spoken; he has the last word.

A close pastor friend of mine was asked to visit a lady in the hospital that was near death. She had lost much weight and could only speak in a whisper, being so weak. On the way the hospital, he sensed that he should ask her; “what has the Lord spoken to you?” He knelt close to her and asked her this question.

In barely audible words, she said, “I will put flesh on your bones!” A week later she was released from the hospital. She was completely well. God had the last word.

As you read the scripture, as you pray, as you hear a message in church, God may speak something to you, but it seems impossible. Remember what the angel said; “Nothing is impossible with God.”

Your ability to stomach insistent cynicism will determine your response to “Life.” This film stares deep into the void and then licks its lips.

Aboard the International Space Station, experts from all over the world have come together to capture and examine the first evidence of alien life.

Within a matter of hours, the extraterrestrial exhibits hyper intelligence and rapid adaptability, escapes its contamination pod, and begins terrorizing the crew. The

crew must rally its resources to survive while also keeping the alien far from the innocent people of Earth.

Co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, of “Deadpool” fame, keep the tone light enough for the first half of the film, but soon after, all hope is lost.

Structurally, “Life” becomes another average slasher.

Unfortunately, its characters are written just well enough, with just enough authentic camaraderie and fear sprinkled in to make that worn-out structure feel particularly malicious.

What most readily distinguishes “Life” from the classics “Alien” and “The

Thing” is the former lacks the latter’s devolution into stories of paranoia and infighting. In their battle with “Calvin,” the name given

to the extraterrestrial by elementary school students, these astronauts might bicker at one another, but their disagreements serve

the expressed purpose of keeping everyone alive.

This combination of earnest teamwork and an arbitrary slasher framework results in one of the darkest worldviews I have ever seen in a major motion picture. “Life” cares about its characters and about its thinly-drawn veil of wonder only to the degree that it can suddenly and viciously destroy both. At least those

other space classics were up front about their nihilistic themes.

A reckless final twist, depending upon your palette, will either be the last straw or the cherry atop a sickly-sweet sci-fi sundae. Place me firmly in the first category. The rampant darkness of what could have otherwise been a stylish space thriller was simply more than this critic could handle.

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ annual CASNR Week will begin Monday and run through Saturday.

The goal of CASNR Week is to celebrate all those who are a part of the college and honor the history and impact it has had at Oklahoma State University, according to the event’s website.

CASNR has more than 60 clubs and competitive teams, which will celebrate their accomplishments from the past year.

“It also focuses on sharing agriculture with the entire campus so that students who aren’t in CASNR can learn a little bit more about its

importance,” Peterson said.

This year, CASNR is kicking off its celebration week Monday with a sign competition and an 11:30 a.m. cookout, which will take place at Ag Hall. At 5:30 p.m., teams will compete in Man vs. Farm in Totusek Arena. The challenge, also known as Farmhand Olympics, allows teams to participate in various farm jobs and competitions, including a milking contest.

Tuesday, a blood drive will take place from 10 a.m.4 p.m. in the Student Union Cowboy Underground. An Industry Perspectives Forum will be at 5:30 p.m in the OSU Alumni Center.

Wednesday is Ag Day on the Lawn from 9-11 a.m. on Library Lawn East, followed by a Farmland movie viewing at 7 p.m. in Willard Hall.

Thursday, the CASNR scholarships & awards banquet will take place in the Wes Watkins Center at 6 p.m.

Friday, students will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions with a CASNR alumni panel at 1:30 p.m. in the Food & Agricultural Products Center.

A fundraiser at the Curty Shack will take place Saturday at 402 S. Washington St. on The Strip. The time has yet to be decided.

CASNR offers various

majors, not all of which are directly related to agriculture. Rachel Williams, a biochemistry and molecular biology sophomore, said CASNR Week helps her to get to know people from the college who are pursuing different fields of study.

“CASNR Week brings us together,” Williams said.

“I always meet new people during it that I wouldn’t have met without CASNR week.”

He said the current players, recruits and former players are his priorities.

In regards to Jawun Evans and Jeffrey Carroll, who are exploring NBA options, Boynton said he supports their interest at playing at the next level.

“When the guys who are on your roster are your priority, then their dreams are,” Boynton said. “Those kids have a dream to play in the NBA. ... They’re gonna go and get an evaluation from people who are actually gonna make decisions. I support that wholeheartedly.”

He said he told them to go to class, take care of their academics and this stuff will work itself out.

“I’m here to serve the players,” Boynton said.

“That’s my first and foremost job, is to be here for those kids. That didn’t change even though I was kinda uncertain of my

own immediate future.

My job was to make sure they have some comfort.”

He has to provide that same comfort with OSU fans. That job starts Monday when he will be formally introduced to the media at 3 p.m. Although the event is not open to the public, it will be live streamed at okstate.com.

“I gotta get the people who buy tickets and whose feelings are hurt to understand the sky is not falling,” Boynton said. “It rained a little bit; the sky was a little cloudy, but the sun is coming back.”
