Reviving an old connection: Former OSU football players open pizza restaurant

After 11 years, two former Oklahoma State football stars are meeting on the field again.

Except this time, the field is business, and it has a lot more pizza.

Billy Bajema and Josh Fields opened a Pie Five Pizza franchise at 611 N. Perkins on Friday, but the partnership between the two started much earlier.

said. “Then, we were in the same class and room together here at Oklahoma State.”

While the two were at OSU, they connected on many passes, with Fields as the quarterback and Bajema the tight end. After OSU, Fields made his way to the MLB and Bajema to the NFL. Years later, they connected in the field of business.

Fields, who owns franchises of Firehouse Subs, already had experience owning a major franchise.

When Bajema considered opening one of his own, he looked to Fields for advice.

Unexpectedly, Fields and his partner, Brandon Birdwell, had already looked at opening a Pie Five franchise.

“They were really fired up that I was interested because they were interested and just a little too committed to Firehouse at the time to do anything about it,” Bajema said. “So we decided to look into it together.”

a franchise. For the group, which also includes Tyce Jones, it was only natural they named it Pistol Pies LLC, after the place where

they came together.

Bajema said it was natural for the first franchise to be in Stillwater, as well.

“Having the first fran-

HBO documentary to shed light on Scientology Miles Clements @MilesClements

Director Alex Gibney’s new film “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief ” won’t present any breaking news for viewers who read Lawrence Wright’s shocking novel of the same name. Similar to many documentaries largely focused on social commentary, seeing is believing, and the film aims to devastate.

Before “Blackfish,” many articles and published journals discussed SeaWorld’s mistreatment. Before “The Inconvenient Truth,” global warming was no stranger to those in the sci-

entific community. There’s something to be said about critical documentary filmmaking that rides the line between journalism and entertainment. After HBO airs “Going Clear” this Sunday at 7 p.m., it will send shock waves through the media, and Scientology will become a target on a much larger scale than it already is today.

The filmmakers understand this, and so does Scientology, which is why it fired back at the documentary in the weeks leading up to its release.

Scientology is notorious for its dealings with the media and its reluctant attitude toward reporters.

The church wrote a fivepage letter, which The Hol-

lywood Reporter published, stating, “The film is biased propaganda that on average includes at least one major error every two minutes.”

The Daily Beast also accused the church this month of using Google ads to discredit the film, claiming it purchased top spots for “Going Clear” searches that would send them to Scientology-sponsored articles about the film.

Regardless of whether Scientology claims the film is propaganda (because why wouldn’t it?), one of the biggest advantages Gibney’s documentary has over reading Wright’s novel is viewers will be able to see real footage of Scientology’s mass “events,” which will be much more compelling.

“Going Clear” features eight former Scientology members, some of who were at the top of the pack.

Marty Rathbun was the church’s second-in-command at one time as well as the chief enforcer. Rathbun discusses the tactics of Scientology, including how it actively pursues celebrities to generate more “true believers,” and explains what some of them are willing to do in the name of Scientology. Two of the more prominent A-listers active in the church are, of course, actors John Travolta and Tom Cruise.

There is so much content in the film.

‘It Follows’ aims to reinvigorate horror Brandon Schmitz @OColly

Although “It Follows” has been hanging around select theaters for a couple of weeks, the film gets its wide release this weekend.

Since its premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the supernatural horror flick has gained significant momentum. I mean, if the near-universal critical acclaim is any indication, then this film is worth keeping an eye on.

The movie follows Jay (Maika Monroe), who, after a bizarre sexual encounter, becomes the target of a mysterious force. From there, she and her friends must escape this burden and the horrors that come along with it.

Admittedly, that premise barely distinguishes itself from those of its contemporaries. That said, the way in which directorial newcomer David Robert Mitchell puts the pieces together is supposedly what sets the film apart.

treasure terrifying moviegoing experiences. Despite the unprecedented output of horror films each year, only a couple of them tend to stand out.

“Cabin in the Woods,” released in 2012, is the best one I’ve seen within the past decade, yet even that film is a sendup of the genre’s tropes.

Within recent memory, “The

Conjuring” and the “Evil Dead” remake are perhaps the only earnest horror films that stick with me.

I hope “It Follows” is among the latter, for a spooky theater experience can make for one memorable night.

Lost Creek Safari offers rare chance to interact with exotic animals in Stillwater

ularity and decision to open seven days a week, Lost Creek Safari is much busier than last year and keeping the personal touch is harder to manage. Meadors and Focht decided to keep the Safari for reservations only to preserve that touch.

Focht said experiences, like bottle-feeding a kangaroo, are lost with big groups.

“That’s why everyone has fun, because it’s a small group,” Focht said. “If you have 300-400 people show up, you wouldn’t be able to hold a kangaroo.”

Smaller groups allow Meadors and Focht to guide the groups by all the animals, telling them where the animals are from and what they eat. For Meadors, it’s more than just showing off the animals.

“We want to educate the kids,” Meadors said. “They don’t just come out and see the animals, they learn about them, too.”

It started with a deer.

Rusty Focht and Carla Meadors live 8 miles south of Stillwater on a 21-acre farm. One day, a friend brought them a whitetailed deer.

“They brought it to us because they knew we bottle-raised goats,” Focht said. “We couldn’t keep it at the time because you need a license to keep them from the wild. We had to send it to a rehabber, but we enjoyed raising it.”

From there, Lost Creek Safari was born.

Lost Creek Safari, an exotic animal exhibit that opens for the season April 11, was not always an exhibit. It started out as a hobby for Focht and Meadors, but became more than the two expected.

Focht said it started when people encouraged the two to open to the public.

“We had so many people come out, neighbors, friends and relatives, and say, ‘You guys should open up and let everybody come out,’” Focht said. “Then word got around and we had to put a gate up just to keep people out.”

After the deer, Focht and Meadors found several more animals to add to the farm. Eventually, the thought of opening to the public became a reality.

Safari, 1200 W. 80th St., opened in 2014. Since, Meadors and Focht have been packed with tours and calls to take in animals.

“We’ve had so many offers on animals this year, we couldn’t take them in,” Focht said. “We don’t have the room for them.”

Lost Creek has on display are “rescues,” or animals given to Meadors and Focht because their owners could no longer keep them due to age or other reasons.

Others are bought through licensed sellers.

Along with fallow and sika deer, Lost Creek Safari houses many different

types of animals, including African crested porcupines, ring-tailed lemurs and sulcata tortoises.

With the smaller size, the safari can offer a different experience than most exotic animal exhibits.

The Oklahoma State football season might be closer than you think.

The Cowboys are scheduled to open the season Sept. 3 — a Thursday — against Central Michigan.

The game is expected to be televised on ESPN. OSU coach Mike Gundy said the Cowboys mainly decided to play the game on a Thursday because of the benefits it will have for both programs, namely extra coverage.

“Coach (Athletic Director Mike) Holder and I had had several discussions about what day to play,”

Gundy said. “When we looked at all the options, at some point it didn’t really matter to me. There is an advantage of playing maybe a couple days earlier and we wanted to play it on that Thursday night for a variety of reasons.

“One, the market and coverage. So, we decided that we would do that. I think it’s better for Central Michigan and Oklahoma State so we decided to go ahead and play it on a Thursday.”

Although the date of the game might be big news to fans eager to watch the Cowboys, the players are indifferent to when the opener is played.

“We could play Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednes-

day, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,” cornerback Ashton Lampkin said. “It doesn’t matter. Whenever they want to strap it up, me and my guys, our coaches are going to prepare us to be ready for whatever day we’re going to play and we’re just going to go out and play and compete.”

Quarterback J.W. Walsh echoed Lampkin’s sentiments.

“We can play on whatever day we want to play,” Walsh said. “It’s going to be a football game. It’s going to be fun.”

Gundy mentioned practice will start just one day earlier for the Cowboys due to the Thursday opener.

“That was really the only reason I had some uncer-

tainty about it,” Gundy said. “But the way the schedule is this year, we’re coming in later. I don’t think we’ll show up until the fourth of August. We’ll have an extra two-a-day and we’ll fit it in for that Thursday game. But we don’t take all the practice days anyway here.”

Walsh did, however, mention he will enjoy having the Saturday off so he can watch more college football. Lampkin also mentioned the weekend off will be nice.

“The Texas Tech game was Thursday this year, so I kind of liked it,” Lampkin said. “We got the weekend off so that was cool. We never get to, you know, be at home on the weekend so
