The Oklahoma State University community is mourning the loss of a woman who was “an inspiration to people of all races.”

Nancy Randolph Davis, 88, died Monday at 9:55 p.m. at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, said Temple McKinney, Davis’ son-in-law.

Davis began having autoimmune seizures about two weeks ago and was admitted to the hospital for observation after having frequent blackouts, said Calvin Davis, her son.

Before the seizures began, Davis was living in Oklahoma City and was relatively healthy, he said.

Davis, the first AfricanAmerican enrollee at OSU, was turned away twice before she was admitted to the university in 1949.

She graduated from OSU in 1952 with her master’s degree in home economics

and went on to teach.

In 2001, OSU named one of its newest residence halls after Davis. The university also offers three Nancy Randolph Davis Scholarships and has dubbed Feb. 1 as “Nancy Randolph Davis Day.” President Burns Hargis highlighted her “courage and persistence” in a statement released Tuesday afternoon “The Oklahoma State University family is truly saddened by the passing of one of our most revered pioneers, Nancy Randolph Davis,” Hargis said in a press release. “She believed strongly in the power of education and her courage and persistence paved the way for countless African-American students. Mrs. Davis was an inspiration to people of all races. She will be missed.”

A service for Davis will be held at True Vine Ministries, 3701 Spencer Road, in Spencer on Saturday, Davis said. The time of the service is to be announced. news@ocolly.com

SGA Presidential Debate shows unified interest in outreach Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

Tuesday night’s Student Government Association Presidential Debate gave the student body a preview of the three presidential candidates and their respective priorities.

As far as those priorities go, all three candidates have one major thing in common: Student outreach.

Each candidate, Chance Imhoff, Kyle Hilbert and Mason Taylor, expressed a strong interest in marketing SGA to the student body. The common goal among them is bringing more students to SGA ac-

tivities and better communication between constituencies and its members.

Chance Imhoff said student involvement in SGA was vital to its existence and for the benefit of all students.

“The biggest issue facing SGA is making every student a part of it,” Imhoff said. “We must brand SGA so students know what opportunities are available.”

Kyle Hilbert said an extra step of an opendoor policy to all students would help with outreach in addition to previous programs and activities.

“It’s great to have programs to bring students in,” Hilbert said. “We also need to reach out to stu-

dents to meet with them in person.”

Mason Taylor said it would be a priority in his administration to reach out to students and have them involved with SGA. “One of the biggest things we’re concerned with is getting students engaged on campus,” Taylor said.

The candidates disagreed on nothing, and the environment was less of a debate, and more of a conversation. Ideas and suggestions were discussed for each candidate to summarily agree with and add to.

dates did not rely on buzz words or talking points to draw attention to their platform. Taylor said the atmosphere shows the true nature of the candidates.

“It felt like more of a forum than a debate,”

Taylor said. “Which is great because it shows that we’re all on the same page, working for the students and creating a better OSU.” Hilbert said the debate was a good experience

and showed that all three candidates were qualified for the job.

“It was an incredible experience,” Hilbert said.

OSUPD CITES STUDENTS FOR MARIJUANA, COCAINE IN DORMS March 12: Two OSU students were issued a notice to appear in court after OSUPD officers found marijuana, cocaine and drug paraphernalia in Bennett Hall, according the a report from OSUPD. The two students, whose names were redacted from the report, were cited for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a schedule II drug, cocaine, the report states.

Austin Devon GuidyLair, 19, was charged by Payne County Court with one count of unlawful possession of controlled dangerous substance cocaine March 13, according to Oklahoma State Courts Network.

Court documents list Guidy-Lair’s address in Bennett Hall and OSUPD as the arresting agency. The

police report from OSUPD also listed the suspect’s age as 19.

If convicted of the felony, he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and/or maximum fine of $5,000.

A court date has not been set for Guidy-Lair to appear.

Jordan Christopher Speckles, 19, was charged

by Payne County Court with one count of possession of marijuana and one count of unlawful possession of paraphernalia March 13.

Speckles was in possession of three glass smoking pipes, a clear glass bong and one metal grinder, according to a court document.

Court documents list Speckles address in Bennett Hall and OSUPD as the arresting agency. The police report from OSUPD also listed the suspect’s age as 19.

If convicted, Speckles faces a maximum of one year in county jail and/ or a maximum fine of $1,000.

A court date has not been set for Speckles to appear.

OSU STUDENT CHARGED WITH DUI, POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA AND PARAPHERNALIA March 12: OSU student Chance Alan Hardy, 21, was arrested in OSU Lot 4 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Hardy was contacted by OSUPD for a traffic violation just before midnight, according to the police report.

After Hardy was arrested, officers searched his Chevy Avalanche and found marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Officers found a multicolored smoking pipe and a metal grinder in Hardy’s vehicle.

Hardy was transported to Payne County Jail and agreed to take the state’s breath test revealing Hardy had a blood alcohol content of .09, the report states.

Hardy appeared before Payne County Court from Payne County Jail without counsel and was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia March 13.

Hardy was released on recognizance bond.

Hardy appeared before Payne County Court with attorney Charles Meyers and pleaded not guilty March 20.

If convicted of all three misdemeanor counts, Hardy faces a maximum of three years in county jail and/or a maximum fine of $3,000.

Hardy is scheduled to appear in court May 11 at 8:30 a.m.

TWO CHARGED IN REPORTED HOUSE PARTY STABBING March 13: Antawan De Undre Green and Ieisha Lynette Perkins were both charged with first-degree burglary by Payne County Court after being arrested in connection with a reported stabbing March 8.

Green appeared before Payne County Court from the Payne County Jail without counsel for his arraignment March 19. The court appointed attorney Jodie Gage to represent Green.

Green has not posted his $20,000 bond, according to Oklahoma State Courts Network.

Perkins appeared before Payne County Court from the Payne County Jail without counsel for arraignment March 17. The court appointed attorney Sarah Kennedy to represent Perkins.

THIEVES TARGET OSU BOREN VETERINARY HOSPITAL March 16: An Oklahoma State student reported her laptop and wallet as stolen from the Equine Surgery Rounds Room, according to a report from the OSU Police Department. Her loss totals $2,225, according to the report. The suspect is unknown.

Another OSU student reported her black laptop charger stolen from the Equine Medicine Rounds Room between March 10 and 11, according to an OSUPD report. Her loss totals $60, the release states. The suspect is unknown.

Mayoral candidates Chuck Hopkins and Gina Noble are anxiously awaiting the April 7 municipal election.

Noble is an OSU media and strategic communications professor and has been a city councilor for two years. Hopkins is a retired OSU adjunct researcher and former vice mayor.

The candidates have made themselves available through several speaking events, forums and debates.

Quality of life, infrastructure and water are three of the most discussed topics.

During the forums, Hopkins and Noble were

given a few minutes to answer several questions throughout the course of an hour.

“Infrastructure is always

most important, specifically roads,” Noble said. “We need to renew the sales tax of 2016, that’s going to be really important and voters have to renew it.”

Hopkins said he is in favor of raising the sales tax to improve infrastructure.

Noble specified that water infrastructure and improving roads was her highest priority because it is a part of the overall quality of life in Stillwater.

The sales tax that needs to be renewed for 2016 has become a primary focus of the candidates. The current total sales tax paid for purchases within Stillwater city limits is 8.813 percent,

March Madness success did not follow Wichita State to Stillwater.

No. 12 Oklahoma State had a big inning offensively in the bottom of the fourth where the Pokes scored four runs, which propelled the Cowboys to an 8-3 win over Wichita State on Tuesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

“The guy (Wichita State pitcher Tyler Jones) did a good job keeping the ball down early in the game,” third baseman Kevin Bradley said. “The umpire was calling that low strike and he was doing a good job taking advantage of it. We were able to put together a good inning and knock them out of the game and start putting some pressure on them.”

The big inning for OSU (17-7) started with Conor Costello hitting a single, then stealing second. Corey Hassel was walked on a wild pitch and Costello was able to advance to third. Then, Bradley hit a shot to left-center that scored Costello and Hassel. Chappell was the next base runner when he hit a single that scored Bradley and advanced to second on a throwing error. McCain then pocketed a ball in the right-field corner that scored Chappell and resulted in a triple.

Trey Cobb (2-0) got the decision with his two innings and three strikeouts. However, the Cowboys used a plethora of pitchers; they allowed the Shockers (11-13) three earned runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters.

Junior shortstop Donnie Walton saw his first action of the season at home.

Walton, who recently returned from right wrist surgery, played shortstop in the ninth inning and was welcomed with a good ovation by the crowd.

Oklahoma State faced a major transition this season after losing Marcus Smart and Markel Brown to the NBA, but the Cowboys still squeezed their way into the NCAA Tournament before bowing out with an opening round loss to Oregon.

Next year, OSU will have even more changes to combat. The Cowboys will lose three starting seniors in Anthony Hickey, Le’Bryan Nash and Michael Cobbins.

That means Phil Forte will likely become the man and coach Travis Ford — assuming he keeps his job despite widespread fan criticism

— will have to mold a team with even less experience.

OSU is still on the recruiting trail and has four more scholarships available, but here is an early look at probable key figures for next season’s squad: PG Jawun Evans: Evans is a McDonald’s All-American recruit out of Dallas and possibly the best point guard in the country. Evans is 6 feet tall, incredibly fast and plays with a good mix of scoring ability and passing prowess. In an ideal world, Evans matches the hype and is able to be a productive starting point guard from day one.

F Leyton Hammonds: Players and coaches have raved about Hammonds’ ability for the past two seasons, but he has yet to show it consistently in game settings. Hammonds is a lengthy defender and good shooter who could likely play either small forward or power forward. If he progresses as expected in his junior season, Hammonds is a prime candidate for a starting role.

F/C Mitch Solomon: The Bixby native delivered respectable minutes for OSU as a freshman, but now he will be OSU’s top option in the post. The Cowboys will need Solomon to develop

more confidence offensively and hope he can be a defensive and rebounding force.

Other notable players: G/F Jeff Carroll: Known for his 3-point shot, Carroll needs to become a more consistent and complete player.

F Tavarius Shine: Shine proved this season he can defend and shoot. If he has a good offseason, he could contend for a starting spot thanks to his toughness and all-around game.

PG Tyree Griffin: An underrated bench player this season, Griffin should see a lot of minutes next year.

With that comes a better chance to show off the full extent of his game.
