Mike Boynton stood inside an empty Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday, a crowd of reporters surrounding him. He wasn’t as emotional as his senior leaders, Mitchell Solomon and Jeffrey Carroll, but he pondered why his team won’t play in the NCAA Tournament.

The Oklahoma State men’s basketball team didn’t hear its name called on Selection Sunday. Instead, the Cowboys (19-14) will host a National Invitational Tournament game at 8 p.m. Tuesday when Florida Gulf Coast comes to Stillwater.

team field, but the Cowboys didn’t make the NCAA Tournament in Boynton’s first season.

“We understand that there probably were some things that we could have controlled better

over the course of the season,” Boynton said. “I’m not going to the schedule part because I don’t necessarily believe that, but maybe some of the games in the Big 12 that we didn’t perform as well.”

OSU’s last time in the NIT was in 2011, when it won a first-round game against Harvard before losing to Washington State in Pullman.

The Cowboys have two thirdplace finishes in 11 tries at the tournament. The postseason appearance is the Cowboys’ 40th all time.

in the second round to become the first 15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles lost in the Atlantic Sun conference championship game to Lipscomb.

The NCAA operates the NIT, and each higher-seeded team hosts the first three rounds in its home arena. The finals are in Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 29.

“We weren’t quite as close to the bubble as we thought we were,” Boynton said. “While we’re disappointed, we know it’s a very great field in this event. The opportunity to continue our season and play really quality teams is a great one.”

Seven Big 12 teams got in the NCAA Tournament, and Baylor and OSU made the NIT. The Bears are one of four top seeds.

Solomon said though the Cowboys’ high hopes didn’t come to fruition, they have a chance to prove some of the doubters wrong.

“We have a lot of basketball to play,” Solomon said. “We get to play a couple more games with these guys. It’s something I don’t take for granted.”

Rosa and Holliday said they aren’t sure why it keeps happening.

“Sometimes, certain guys have a way about them,” Holliday said.

“Maybe they’re trying to pitch him inside because he’s doing a good job outside, and then those balls get away a little bit, or maybe it’s just the way he looks out at the pitcher.”

Holliday explained that every season,

there’s an OSU player who takes hits from pitches more than others.

He said before Rosa, that Cowboy was Garrett McCain, an outfielder who now plays for the Detroit Tigers organization.

Although Rosa has to withstand the pain, he said it’s worth getting hit by a pitch to make it on base.

“I’m fine with getting hit, as long as it’s not in the hand,” Rosa said.

In a crowd of thousands, a pair of bright teal running sneakers stick out.

Seven grueling hours and one pulled hip flexor later, Bay Hendrickson finally finished something less than 1 percent of the world’s population has: a marathon.

Hendrickson’s passion for running started in high school. During her senior year, Hendrickson’s younger sister asked her to run a half marathon in their

hometown of Tulsa. The running addiction kicked in, and from there, Hendrickson said she wanted to do a full marathon.

Hendrickson com-

pleted her first marathon during her freshman year of college, and said she felt a wave of accomplishment after making the leap from half to

full.

“They say you run the first half with your mind and the second half with your heart,” Hendrickson said.

It sometimes makes her wonder why she continues to register for two marathons a year — one in the spring and one in the fall. As soon as the race gets started, though, sidewalk cheerleaders and supporters in silly banana suits surround Hendrickson, and she’s quickly reminded of the addictive atmosphere.

Hendrickson’s boyfriend, Ian Fladie, is a

recent graduate of OSU and has been there to cheer her on during her races, most noticeably at mile 17, her hardest mile.

“You see people from all facets of life,” he said. “It’s pretty impressive.”

Hendrickson now wants to share her love of running with her sorority sisters.

In April, she and 10 other members of OSU’s Delta Delta Delta will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to participate in the St. Jude Rock ’n’ Roll Nashville race. She

will be the only one running the full marathon, with others competing in the half marathon and 5K. Hendrickson wanted to run the race last year as a way of adding another state to her running repertoire. In her previous races, she always came across older runners who were a part of a 50 states marathon club.

For her to become a member of this club, she needs to have run in at least 10 states. That motivation got her exploring for races to run STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 8

Hendrickson said she knew trying to travel to Tennessee alone would be a challenge, so she tried to make it possible for her sorority sisters to join her.

Tri Delta’s national philanthropy is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Once a year, the chapter tries to organize a trip to visit the hospital in Memphis.

Events are hosted each semester to raise money for the organization, and Hendrickson said this would be another way for the members to make an impact.

“Instead of touring the hospital, (they) can actually do something that raises money,” Hendrickson said.

Unfortunately, Hendrickson said they began the process too late. In February 2017, hotels were booked, and the funding needed for a bus and bus driver was too high.

Hendrickson booked rooms this past November, and she said even then it was hard to find a hotel.

Hendrickson said her goal is to finish in 4:45 in April. Although that time is nowhere near the Boston Marathon qualifying time of 3:36, she hopes that continuing to run marathons will get her closer to being prepared for the Colorado Marathon, which she said MONDAY, MARCH 12, 2018

is where a majority of people qualify for Boston.

To help her sorority sisters, Hendrickson put together various training programs based on what each runner wanted to achieve. Baleigh Herring, a freshman who will join Hendrickson in Nashville, began using the beginner 5K program and said it’s helped her maintain an easy and consistent schedule to prepare her for April.

If Hendrickson could offer any words of wisdom for runners training for a race, it would be to stick with a training program.

“I ran a marathon having only trained 4 miles, and it sucked,” she said. “Even though the long runs on Saturday and Sunday might suck, they’re there to help you.”

The group has also set

up a fundraiser for the marathon trip, which can be found at https://www. gofundme.com/st-judemarathon-trip.

The fundraiser was started in hopes to raise money to help fund gas money for the drive to Nashville, according to the fundraiser’s website.

Herring said she doesn’t consider herself a runner. She’s never run a road race before, but said she wanted to get the experience alongside friends while also supporting a cause dear to her.

“We can all just go and be a part of it together,” Herring said.
