COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has taken the whole world by storm and it seems that Oklahoma State could get caught in the middle.

Leaders at OSU have been meeting to discuss future plans, and they already know what they need to do if necessary. In a campus announcement Tuesday, OSU President Burns Hargis detailed what that plan would look like “While no decision to do so has been made, we are exploring the possibility of moving our in-person classes at both Stillwater and Tulsa campuses online for two weeks following spring break as a contingency plan to protect our campus community as best we can,” Hargis said.

Hargis emphasized that the University has not made a decision at the Faculty Council meeting Tuesday. He said he is in close communication with the governor and the president of the University of Oklahoma as well as other significant advisers with medical expertise or knowledge of the University.

Rumors surfaced about

possible cancellations at OSU and Glen Krutz, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, all but confirmed the rumors in an email obtained by the O’Colly.

“I met with Provost Sandefur (Vice President of OSU) earlier this evening,” Krutz said in the email. “Conversations continue to occur at the highest levels of the university regarding university response to the spreading Coronavirus.

“At this point, to be ready for any eventuality those leaders might choose going forward, I direct each department head to assure that each of their spring 2020 instructors have a familiarity with Canvas and Zoom.”

The University has so far responded to the virus with a travel ban, canceling study abroad trips for spring break. Students doing their spring semester study in Italy have returned to campus and were cleared by health officials.

There are still students remaining in Japan on a long term study abroad, and they were reached out to and were encouraged to return back to the US. President Hargis’ announcement said all university-sponsored international travel will be suspended until further notice effective Friday.

The study abroad office is working with airlines to get refunds for students’ purchased tickets, but it hasn’t been consistently successful. However, fees the University can refund are being refunded.

Hargis said a campus closure would not include the closure of dorms or food services; it would only affect classes.

Leaders and health officials of Oklahoma State are monitoring the situation closely and with caution. The worry expressed at the Faculty Council meeting was that the situation could be much different in a few days, so it’s hard to give an answer now.

“We don’t know,” Hargis said. “It’s a very unclear path we’re on.”

Originating in Huanan Seafood Market in December, it did not take long for the coronavirus to spread globally. Coronavirus is highly contagious but survivable; of the 80,000 cases in China, 60,000 people have survived. But for the elderly or people who have respiratory issues, it can be deadly.

As of Tuesday, there are 754 coronavirus cases in the U.S., which is far less than comparable nations when it comes to total cases per million people.

Many schools, including the University of Oklahoma, have considered moving to online classes after spring break because of how contagious COVID-19 is. Other schools like Harvard University

and Stanford University have already stopped inperson classes.

Unless coronavirus disappears over spring break, Oklahoma State will likely move to online classes for at least one week, probably more.

Mara Sylvester does not consider herself a resident of Stillwater despite attending Oklahoma State University for three years.

Sylvester’s permanent address is still her parents’ address, and she is registered to vote in Okmulgee county.

This is why she doesn’t consider herself a resident of Stillwater, even though she has spent 25 of the past 34 months on campus.

Sylvester has lived in a dorm her three years at OSU, she said that’s what’s stopping her from considering herself a citizen of Stillwater.

The City of Stillwater loses between $1,500-$1,800 in funding for every student who doesn’t fill out the census.

“I think if I had an apartment I would be more apt to call myself a citizen because there would be housing I’m definitely paying for,” Sylvester said.

Sylvester said she will not fill out the census.

Students like Sylvester are the students the City of Stillwater is trying to reach for the 2020 census.

the 50,000-person mark in 2010. This means Stillwater missed out on $6 million to $7.2 million worth of state and federal funding.

Mayor Will Joyce said the city loses about $1,500$1,800 in federal and state funding for every person not counted in the census.

“In the City of Stillwater, if your house catches on fire, the Stillwater fire department is going to respond,”

Joyce said. “If you have a legal problem or a crime problem, Stillwater police are going to respond... So, it’s important for you to be counted as one of the people those services are here for.”

Joyce and Stillwater have been preparing for the census for over a year now, trying to get the word out to Stillwater residents and OSU students. Stillwater created a Complete Count Committee made up of representatives from different agencies in Payne County, including OSU, to make sure it was reaching everyone possible.

“That (2010) number was soft, and it has been soft every census,” Joyce

said. “This (2020 number) number will be soft. I think it is always an uphill battle for us to get a complete and accurate count, especially of students here in Stillwater.”

Students are often confused as to what the census is counting. Questions most often received include, “What if my parents live somewhere else? What if I live out-of-state? What if I am still a dependent on my parent’s taxes?”

None of those issues affect census reporting.

Reporting your address in Stillwater does not affect your tuition, your taxes or your parents’ taxes. The census is tracking your usual residence.

Census.gov defines “usual residence” as “the place where a person lives and sleeps most of the time. This place is not necessarily the same as the person’s voting residence or legal residence.” For OSU students who spend nine months of the year in Stillwater, that would count as a usual residence.

“The census count is about where people reside,” Joyce said. “It’s not a citizenship test. It’s not about where you’re from or where your parents live. It’s about where people reside on a day to day basis at the time of the census.”

Tracy Anderson’s ordinary morning at work became a little more exciting when she realized strangers on social media were suddenly talking about her son.

Her husband, Avery Anderson Jr., called to tell her what he had seen on Twitter.

People paying attention to up-and-coming basketball stars wanted to know more about the tenacious, young point guard who had played in former NBA athlete Mo Williams’ gymnasium the previous day.

Avery Anderson, then a seventh-grader, earned a spot on Williams’ AAU squad, but unlike many of his eighth-grade teammates, he hadn’t grown up in the heart of the Metroplex.

Instead, he lived in Justin, Texas, an outer Fort Worth suburb with a population of about 3,500.

It was the town where he and his family had rebuilt their lives after one of the United States’ most devastating natural disasters destroyed their home.

Anderson, a freshman at Oklahoma State, said if Hurricane Katrina hadn’t hit New Orleans in 2005, then he likely wouldn’t have a Cowboy basketball scholarship.

“The exposure that I got in Texas, I probably wouldn’t have got in New Orleans,” Anderson said.

“Without that exposure, I probably wouldn’t even be here.”

OSU freshman Avery Anderson III lived in New Orleans until he was 4, when he and his family had to evacuate their home because of Hurricane Katrina.

Although growing up in Texas allowed Anderson to catapult into the recruiting world, his New Orleans roots remain part of his identity.

Anderson left when he was 4, but he said he recalls taking leisurely walks with his parents and his older sister, Brittanie Anderson, on a hill near their house in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Atop the hill, they could see the homes dotting the land below them on one side, and the water of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet stretched below them on the other.

That was before the levee broke.

As Hurricane Katrina approached New Orleans in August 2005, the Andersons quickly gathered enough clothing to last three days.

Tracy Anderson remembered to take significant papers, including vaccination records, so her children could enroll in school as soon as possible when they arrived at their next destination.

“She was like, ‘We gotta

get out of here,’” Anderson said. “We had packed my clothes, got in the car. I don’t remember what happened after that, but I know we got in the car and left.”

They headed to Huntsville, Alabama, to stay with his uncle. Only one block away from the Andersons’ house in New Orleans, a levee broke, unleashing the floodwaters on their neighborhood. When they watched the news and saw footage of high water around a familiar bridge, they realized their nearby home was submerged.

“We were thinking that we were going to come back home,” Brittanie said. “So when we didn’t, it was kind of like, ‘OK, we’ve got to figure out the next steps.’”

About three months after the hurricane, Anderson’s father returned to New Orleans and saw the damage.

Anderson’s tiny NBA jerseys were scattered in the midst of the wreckage, and boards from his wooden bed lay askew on the floor.

from the sagging yellow basketball hoop. Mold and water stains marred the walls, painted teal to show Avery’s love for the New Orleans Hornets.

Anderson had lost the possessions that represented his early basketball dreams, but opportunities awaited him. In Huntsville, Anderson wowed the crowd at a youth basketball game as he used a spin move to make a layup, something the spectators usually didn’t see from an athlete who was 5.

“That was my first memory that he’s going to be good, he’s going to be real good,” Tracy said.

His peewee career in Huntsville didn’t last long.

That winter, the Andersons moved to Coppell, Texas, where people Katrina had affected could temporarily live rent-free. As Anderson’s parents worked, his mother at a bank and his father at a post office, they saved money to build a home.

On Sept. 15, 2006, Anderson and his family settled into their new house in Justin.

They had no idea Anderson would someday have a historic basketball career at the high school across the street from their neighborhood.

“Northwest (High School) definitely played a big part in who we are today and making him the athlete he is,” Brittanie said.

Her brother’s 2,767 points set a school record, and his honors piled up: freshman of the year, district MVP, All-State player. At the

same time, competing on AAU circuits launched him into a world of high-caliber basketball beyond his rural hometown.

“It made him stronger because of the competition, the amount of elite players that’s in the DFW area,” Avery Jr. said.

Whether his son was competing on a recreational league team or an AAU squad, he was often one of the youngest, and smallest, players. It started when Anderson joined his godfather Alonzo Norman’s recreational team as a third-grade kid among fifth-graders and sixth-graders.

“Since I was a smaller guard, I knew I had to have good ball-handling skills so nobody would take the ball from me,” Anderson said.

“And be fast, so I could get to my spots and where I wanted to.”

When he joined the AAU circuit, playing on a team for older kids was natural.

As he stuck with AAU ball through 2018, first with Williams and then with Jermaine O’Neal’s Drive Nation team on the Nike circuit, his name popped up in national recruiting conversations.

Mike Boynton, Anderson’s coach at OSU, has kept up with his journey since 2016, when Anderson attended a basketball camp in Stillwater. During the recruiting process, Boynton learned not only about Anderson’s talent but also about his path from New Orleans to Justin.

“I think part of it is just

understanding that change isn’t always bad,” Boynton said. “There could be some good that comes from it, new experiences, getting to know new people.”

Anderson is nearing the end of his first season at OSU as he prepares to compete in the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. The eighth-grade point guard who played in Mo Williams’ gym has transformed into a college freshman whose name is familiar to many, from Cowboy fans to conference opponents.

Anderson and his family don’t visit New Orleans often. If he wants to find pieces of his past, then he can step into the living room of his family’s spacious twostory house in Justin. On the coffee table, one photo album preserves images of happy times, including the construction of that home and highlights of Anderson’s high school basketball career.

The other is filled with the photographs his father took after the hurricane.

The pictures of Anderson’s ruined childhood home, of the mold-covered walls, of his disheveled room, tell the story of the devastation that led to his becoming a Division I athlete. Without that album, the other wouldn’t exist.

“We just keep it as a reminder and keep us humble, where we came from and where we are now,” Tracy said. “And we have to just be thankful and blessed that we did turn out OK.” PAGE 4

Paul Wiese and his son returned home from “Coach Brad Camp” in 2016, where they had an opportunity to meet and spend some time with the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team.

They also had the chance to meet Mike Boynton—although that all but slipped from their minds.

Then a week after they got home, Wiese unassumingly went to his mailbox and saw a beautiful handwritten letter from Boynton to his son, Colin.

That’s when he knew.

“I looked at my wife and I said, ‘That’s a good man.’”

Wiese said.

Boynton was only an assistant coach at the time, but Wiese immediately had a feeling Boynton was a highquality human being.

“Mike Boynton is special, which is why I tweet a lot about him and the program,” Wiese said. “And I only have 210 followers so nobody really cares, but I’m trying to make everyone understand, we’re very, very lucky to have this guy.”

OSU has always meant a lot to Wiese and his family, but it wasn’t until Boynton took over as head coach that Wiese really got into the basketball program.

“I mean, I liked the program, I didn’t love it,” Wiese said. “I didn’t wake up in the morning excited for the game that night. I didn’t get bummed if we lost, in the old days. Because of this

guy, because I know how much it means to him, I want to do whatever I can to support him.”

That support stretches far.

And deep—really deep— into the wallet.

Wiese attends almost every OSU men’s basketball game, and that’s no simple task.

He doesn’t work in Stillwater. He doesn’t live in Stillwater. In fact, he’s got a company to run way out west in California. Wiese is the vice president of sales for Pacific Medical Inc, a company that distributes durable medical equipment.

His work life in addition to commitments to his wife, three kids and three grandkids keeps him busy.

Still, Wiese’s affinity for Boynton’s program keeps him invested in the program.

Wiese makes a concerted effort to attend every game— no matter the destination.

This season he’s flown all over the country, including trips to New York, Charleston, Houston, College Station and of course, Stillwater.

From tickets to flights to hotels, Wiese estimates he’s spent $50,000 this season and estimates he flew 59,598 miles. Just don’t tell his wife.

But even his wife, Deedee, is infatuated with OSU basketball, which is interesting because she never liked basketball until she was introduced to Boynton’s program.

“A year ago, in November, we walk in, we’re up in a game in Minnesota,

and ‘Ice’ (Isaac Likekele) is doing homework,” Wiese said. “I introduce him to my wife. He got up, shook her hand, smiled and said, ‘Nice to meet you.’ I took a picture of my wife next to ‘Ice’ and since then, that’s her favorite player.”

Wiese is committed to the OSU basketball program, but he said finding that balance between family, work and OSU basketball is vital.

“Obviously, my family is the most important thing to me, and I have to work because that’s how I pay for these kinds of things, but there isn’t a thing in the world that I wouldn’t do for Oklahoma State because of what they’ve done for my family, to all my family,” Wiese said.

The Cowboys have had

a rough season, especially early in Big 12 play, but Wiese said it’s more important than ever to support this program.

“I think you need to support somebody more when they struggle than when they succeed,” Wiese said.

“When they’re succeeding it’s easy. Everybody wants to support a winner, everybody wants to support somebody when things are going well. I’ll tell you right now, the times that I want to reach out to the players, or I want to tweet stuff is when they’re having a difficult time.”

Regardless of the result, Wiese said he sees players always going out and giving it their all.

young men to be better husbands, fathers and role models. He said the players deserve that support now more than ever.

And Wiese does a lot to support this program, but he doesn’t do it for attention, he doesn’t do it for recognition—he does it for the players.

“I want the young men to look up in the stands and see some orange,” Wiese said.

“Now, I’m not enough orange by myself, but I know the players look up. I don’t know them personally, but they know me by seeing me.

And they’ll smile and wave as they’re walking off the court. And I know it means something to them to have somebody there to support them.”

The Wiese family has

fallen in love with the OSU basketball program and their relationship isn’t contingent on anything.

Wiese’s been ecstatic since the moment Boynton was hired to be head coach, and that was only the beginning.

“Mike was the reason we fell for the program, but the men that play for the team are the reason that we are in love with the program, the reason we support Mike,” Wiese said. “I don’t think Mike needs our support, Mike is going to be a really successful coach, I hope it’s at Oklahoma State, but these young men are just starting their careers.

“I think they’re really the people that need support from us.”
