Kim Tran doesn’t stand still much when she’s working. In a little white trailer at Knoblock Street and Maple Avenue, Tran is juggling food, ringing up customers and taking orders on her phone for 9 hours a day.

When she’s not serving food, she’s cleaning up or preparing more.

Tran and Stanley Rains leased what used to be Subway on Knoblock, and they moved the trailer from its usual spot off Duck Street next to the Stillwater Masonic Lodge. The food Tran makes at Kim’s Vietnamese Cuisine is part of who she is: the heritage she traces back to Vietnam, the country she saw come apart, the country she fled, the country she remembers.

Saigon fell April 30, 1975, bringing down with it every aspect of Tran’s life. Her wealthy family, including her father, who worked for the Red Cross, now had a target on its back.

Communist troops closed the law school where she spent 3 years studying. The cooks who prepared meals for her family and taught her recipes were gone, with them the maids who kept Tran and her siblings in order. Her father was arrested and suspected of being a CIA spy because his work with the Red Cross kept him involved with Americans in South Vietnam.

It took time and careful, secretive deliberation. Even talking about leaving Vietnam meant risking arrest or worse.

Her husband and parents

stayed behind, unwilling to leave their country. Tran said she remembered one day not long before she took her two children to the docks, an elderly man who lived next door to her family figured out she was preparing to leave.

“He told me the recipe for pho,” Tran said. “He said, ‘Keep it for yourself, you’ll use it someday.’”

It was April 30, 1980, 5 years after the last American helicopters fled the doomed South Vietnamese capital, by then renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the former North Vietnamese leader. Communists were celebrating the occasion, but in the hot, moonlit night near Saigon, Tran hushed both her children while they waited for the boat to arrive.

Her sons, Trong and Luan, were only 4 and 3 years old, respectively.

Tran secured passage out of the country with one of her brothers and two sisters, but not without a fee of about $10,000. They had to leave as close to midnight as possible.

Any earlier or later, and the migrants risked capture near the coastline.

Twenty-three people boarded a 15-foot-long boat with only a small two-stroke motor powering it as far as it could go into the open ocean. The plan, like it was for hundreds of thousands of other refugees from Southeast Asia, was to go east.

Busy international shipping lanes lay only a few hundred kilometers offshore. Hundreds of passing tankers, cargo ships and fishing vessels offered opportunities at safe harbor. Past the ships were the Philippines,

and hopefully, freedom.

But that meant crossing the South China Sea and avoiding pirates, communist ships and storms.

Tran’s sister held her children tightly as both women looked over the side. The boat sat so low, the water’s dark, purple surface was barely inches below the side, each wave taking it dangerously close to swamping the boat and sending everyone into the water.

“I think we’ll die,” Tran’s sister said. “We’re surrounded by water.”

The waves never came over the side, but after three days, the drinking water and food supplies ran out. A high sun baked the refugees, its reflection bright against the waves across the endless sea.

Tran soaked her shirt in what water she had left, wringing a part of it in her fist to give her children mere drops at a time to keep them from crying on and on.

Amid the shipping lanes, the refugees had to keep a close eye for passing ships. They were not only looking for a

ship to pick them up, but also if they strayed too close, the ship’s wake would knock the overloaded boat over. Worse, there were boats they had to avoid at all costs.

“If you saw a Russian ship, we had to run away from them,” Tran said. “We saw a Hungarian ship, and we ran away from them.”

Before the crossing, Tran committed all the flags in the world to memory, each stripe and color meaning the difference between safety and capture. She needed to know

exactly which flags would take them to freedom and which communist countries would send them back to Vietnam.

When supplies had run out, a towering Japanese cargo ship passed by. Although the ship couldn’t take anyone aboard, it left water and food, something Tran said likely saved their lives.

With enough supplies to make it a few more nights, the refugees had to decide. If they stayed in the shipping lanes, they risked capture or being run STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 4

OSU Sustainability Committee promotes recycling, awareness T r e vor Smit h staff reporter @ ocolly

Recycling is one of the main ways Americans can help the environment, but few understand how vital recycling is.

Americans generated around 254 million tons of trash in 2013, but about only 87 million tons were recycled and composted. Only 34.3 percent of the total trash created was recycled, according to a chart on the United States Environmental Protections Agency website.

Oklahoma State University puts a focus on environmental sustainability with committees such as the Sustainability Committee, led

by Kelly Edwards, the committee’s Student Government Association director.

The committee’s main goal is to help spread awareness of how people’s day-to-day actions can affect the environment. The committee hosts several events every year to spread knowledge about sustainability and recycling.

“Our major program this fall was the Real Cowboys Recycle campaign that focuses on tailgate recycling,” Edwards said. “We pass out recycling bags at

every home game and also collect cans that we will donate to Habitat for Humanity as it both makes our corner of the Earth a little greener and benefits a great cause.”

Events such as Real Cowboys Recycle have been going on for more than a decade at OSU. The Sustainability Committee has been active on campus since the SGA executive board founded it in 2007.

Anyone can volunteer for the Sustainability Committee’s events at its meetings, which are held at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday in Student Union Room 460.

The group is always in need of volunteers for its events, Edwards said.

The group will host two major events during the spring semester: Green Student Initiative and Earthfest.

The two events will take place in April.

Earthfest, which begins April 25, will bring a playful tone to a major issue about plastics, as the theme for the week will be “Mean Girls.”

There will be Earthfocused vendors and many giveaways, including T-shirts and a raffle on sustainable goods, throughout the week.

“I recycle pretty often when I’m at college, but that’s because a recycling bin is always readily available,” Lorenz said. “Unfortunately, I don’t recycle that often at home because I don’t take the time and effort to separate the trash into recyclable and non-recyclable.”

Like Lorenz, many Americans don’t make the extra effort to recycle, which makes these events so necessary. OSU’s Sustainability Committee hopes to help spread awareness of how to recycle and how to continue these habits in one’s day-to-day life, Edwards said.

“The easiest way to recycle and be more sustainable is to be more aware of what you’re doing, such as using a Camelbak water bottle that can help diminish the amount of plastic used,” Edwards said.

“You can also put more focus on recycling at home, like getting a recycling bin, as every little thing helps.”

over by a ship in the darkness.

The alternative was pushing the limits of their food and water to make it to the Philippines, where refugee camps offered a chance at resettlement.

They went east, taking the gamble of making it to shore.

Two more days and nights went by, the boat still precariously overloaded in the waves.

Even a small storm would sink the boat.

Tran soon looked high above and saw birds, not many at first, but eventually dozens circled above the waves. A few inches from Tran’s face on the boat’s gunwale, she saw a Dr. Pepper can float past. Then a CocaCola can, more trash, bits and pieces on the surface.

Finally, Tran saw land, then the trees, then houses. Soon it was the beach.

After landing, workers examined Tran and her family to check for diseases before being put in one of the many refugee camps in the Philippines. Tran and her family had to find a home. The plan was to have her brother, then an Oklahoma State University student, sponsor them to come to Stillwater for resettlement.

This put them in a better position to be resettled than many of the other hundreds stuck in the Filipino camps.

Before leaving the refugee camp in the Philippines, Tran would give birth to a third child, her daughter, Ly. Tran wanted to study law, and she knew she could work hard enough to do it. She now knows how naïve the notion was. Her 3 years of law school in Saigon were for the French colonial system, taught and studied entirely in the French language before the commu-

nists did away with it.

When Tran finally arrived in Stillwater, not only did she find there wasn’t a law school, but also it was a different system reliant on a language she didn’t know, not to mention its cost being far more than she had to her name. She’d given up what wealth she had when she left Vietnam.

All her life, Tran studied.

She wanted to be intellectual and seek higher education.

She has never been a laborer, and the only ones she knew were the cooks and maids she grew up with in Vietnam.

Without other options, Tran took odd jobs, including selling her egg rolls, to feed her family. Later, Tran got a job at the Mercury Marine plant off Perkins Road, where she worked for 27 years. Despite living a wealthy life in Vietnam before the communist takeover, Tran never stopped working hard.

“I’d grown up in a family making money,” Tran said. “I knew I would make money … If we run out of money tomorrow, I’m not afraid,

I know I can make more money.

“I work very hard. I don’t care what job I do, I will pick up any job in the world if they pay for me.”

Stanley Rains came to Stillwater in 2006 to start at Mercury Marine and met Kim on the quality control line. Rains left the ConAgra flour mill in his hometown of Blackwell after working there for 22 years before it shut down, only to move again from Ponca City when Tyson closed its processing plant there.

Rains got to know Tran through the food she brought to the regular pot luck dinners the line crew organized. Tran’s egg rolls and fried rice were pot luck hits. But by then, Tran’s children had moved away and worried about her being alone. She dated several men but had a “third date” rule, where she never went on a fourth date, always cutting it off.

That is, until she dated Rains.

“Something about him,” Tran said. “He’s a very neat

guy, he worked very neat and clean. He didn’t talk bad about anybody.”

When Mercury Marine announced in 2009 it would close its Stillwater plant in 2011, Tran and Rains kicked around ideas for what they would do together once the plant shut down. Tran worked until the plant closed, but Rains was in one of the first rounds of layoffs before the plant stopped production.

Until the plant finally closed, Rains did apartment maintenance and delivered newspapers, but knew he and Tran had to do something stable and interesting together.

Neither of them had many options for factory work nearby, and there weren’t any guarantees other factory jobs would last. They both loved cooking, and Tran had sold her egg rolls pretty successfully at the plant. Thus, Kim’s Vietnamese Cuisine was born.

However, Rains didn’t see the plan quite like Tran did.

“I was thinking small,” Rains said. “I was thinking a food cart selling egg rolls

and fried rice, like the hot dog cart that Dirty Curty has. Kim thought a little higher than me and wanted to add recipes that she had from Vietnam.”

The food trailer was built in Atlanta and shipped to Stillwater. Rains and Tran had only their maroon Jeep Wrangler to pull the trailer before buying an old brown Ford one-ton pickup. Only after they had to call AAA four times for tows did they buy the white Chevrolet flatbed they use today.

Inside, the trailer is a full restaurant kitchen.

“Refrigerators, freezers, six-burner stove, 36-inch grill, 40-pound deep fat fryer,” Rains said. “It’s everything a small kitchen would have in a restaurant. Just not room for people, just room for two.”

In the old Subway, a restaurant interior is slowly coming together. A few sets of tables and chairs from Charlie’s Chicken are set up inside, the red booths in pieces toward the back, waiting on Rains to put them together. What was first only a food cart in their heads is on pace to become a brick and mortar restaurant sometime in the summer, but they’re in no rush to move away from the little white trailer.

Tran used to wake up at about 5 a.m. to start preparing food for the day’s meals.

In the driveway before the sun came up, she cut meat and portioned entrees before eventually stowing equipment to prepare for the drive from their home in northeast Stillwater. With the new location, the trailer stays put, and Tran shows up early to start prepping.

Tran’s beef pho soup is the household favorite, but Rains said any dish can be popular

on any given day. The lunch rush will keep them busy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and another busy shift will run from about 5 p.m. until close at 8 p.m., leaving 2 more hours of cleanup before they go home for the evening.

The trailer operates Tuesday through Saturday, but Rains said they’re changing to Monday through Friday at the new location. The couple uses its days off to get fresh food and supplies for the coming week or to make repairs to anything that’s broken.

Vacations only come the week of Thanksgiving and much of winter break in Stillwater to see Tran’s children, who live in New York, Connecticut and Tampa. Each Memorial Day and Labor Day, the couple will spend a week to relax and float the Illinois River near Tahlequah.

Otherwise, every day starts at 5 a.m.

Every night, Tran puts the next day’s beef pho soup on the burner to simmer overnight, the same recipe she brought from Vietnam. The recipe the man told her would be useful one day.

In June, Tran will spend two weeks in Vietnam with her sister, going back to the country she left more than 38 years ago. Although her sisters have been back, it will be Tran’s first visit. She’s not sure quite what it will feel like, seeing old friends and what used to be her law school, but she said she’s excited to bring back some new recipes for the restaurant while she’s at it.

When his sneakers hit Eddie Sutton Court, he held his pose as if the ball was going in, though it was still floating through the air. The ball struck the left side of the rim and rolled around the back side before falling out. Carroll, continuing to hold his pose, suddenly dropped and turned to get back on defense, his face shocked the attempt didn’t drop.

In the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team’s 79-66 loss to TCU on Tuesday in Gallagher-Iba Arena, its offense again started slow after halftime, a recurring theme this season. TCU led by as many as 16 points in the second half after holding a 36-31 halftime lead.

Turnovers plagued OSU’s offense. Each time OSU (13-9 overall, 3-6 Big 12) was on a run, a turnover disrupted rhythm and gave the Horned Frogs an easy bucket. The Cowboys finished with 16 turnovers.

“We didn’t come out with the type of energy that we needed, really throughout the game,” OSU coach Mike Boynton said. “We’ve got to find a way to play better consis-

tently throughout the game and not rely on a great run at the end.”

Cameron McGriff helped spark a run for the Cowboys in the second half, as he was a big reason OSU cut the deficit to six with about 7 minutes left.

His first play ignited himself and the team, as he flew down the lane and rose to the rim, finishing a thunderous dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. A couple possessions later, McGriff was on the left side of Eddie Sutton Court, streaking toward the basket. Carroll was running down the middle and Kendall Smith on the right side; a threeon-one fast break. Smith dumped it to McGriff, who swooped down the lane and rattled the rim, which shook for a few seconds after he got back on defense.

“I thought Cam was our best performer today, on both ends of the court, in terms of the energy that he played with or the activity level he had, so that’s something that we can build on from a positive standpoint,” Boynton said.

McGriff finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four blocks and four steals.

Before the game, McGriff brought the team together because he said he felt as if its energy wasn’t where it needed to be.

Although McGriff filled the stat sheet and was the Cowboys’ best player, he

knew beforehand the team needed a boost from an energy standpoint.

“It’s an elephant in the room that no one really wants to acknowledge,” McGriff said. “Don’t want to step on anybody’s toes or anything, but confrontation really leads to growth.

Sometimes you may not like it as much, but it’s better for the long run.”

The writers of the Netflix original “The Open House” propose many questions to the audience about what happens when unsuspecting homeowners let strangers into their home. Viewers of the movie have in turn proposed a question to the writers: “How could such an interesting concept be wasted on such a bland movie?”

The plot was seriously lacking in development, and the writers seemed to give up at the end. The few interesting moments in the movie are seriously disturbing.

The movie opens with the death of Brian Wallace, Naomi’s husband and Logan’s father. After his death, Naomi takes up a relative’s offer to stay at a house in the mountains.

When they realize the house is up for sale, they agree to accommodate the realtor by leaving every Sunday during the day so she can conduct her open house. When Logan expresses to his mother his unease of leaving their home in a stranger’s hands, she dismisses him.

The pair soon realizes they will not only be disturbed every weekend by the realtor but also by intrusive neighbors.

acquainted with Martha, whose husband may or may not have died.

Every time Martha is questioned about him, she responds differently. The other townspeople act in a similar fashion and drop by frequently without invitation.

Unexplained noises and the repeated disappearance of Logan’s phone have Logan and Naomi at each other’s throats. The water heater keeps going out, and Naomi is forced to go into the basement repeatedly.

Logan becomes spooked and tries to get his mother to rent a hotel room after someone breaks into the house.

There seems to be someone taunting them, and audience members must require a lot of patience to find out why.

it to a dead end. The audience members are expected to sit on edge while the camera pans around the hallway with suspenseful music throbbing in the background, but they are never rewarded.

The uninspired plot makes it difficult to decipher whether the actors did more than show up.

The vast amount of pointless camera shots made it seem almost as if the production crew was filming for a virtual open house instead of a horror movie.

The house comes fully stocked with your typical horror amenities. It includes a creepy basement, a steep set of stairs, old appliances that need updated, the privacy of the surrounding woods and neighbors that come by only when they are not needed.

The details for this listing can be found on Netflix’s page. Other horror enthusiasts in the market stopped by and gave their opinions under the Netflix movie review option. The overwhelming response to this open house was: do not take this tour.
