“You’ll see a few of us have duct tape over our mouths, saying we’re unheard, and it’s just kind of to symbolize that a lot of us feel that we’re not being heard here on this campus,” Carter said.

“Mostly we want them to see that it’s not so much, ‘Oh, there’s a punishment,’ but you’re hurting someone, and you’re really, truly affecting someone’s life.”

Burgess said she hopes she and others can become more culturally aware by attending the Afro-Am meeting. She recommended other students educate themselves on racial issues to avoid saying or posting anything insensitive.

“I just hope that whenever we leave (the meeting) that people understand there was no harm intended, that was not my intentions and that I have learned,” Burgess said.

“I’m willing to learn more and I want to learn more and I want other people to learn more.”

OSU NAACP expresses frustrations about social media posts Zach H ake S ta ff Repo rter @ oco lly

Oklahoma State University’s NAACP chapter met Tuesday evening to discuss protests and members’ feelings about recent social media posts depicting white students in dark face masks.

Mauree Turner, president of OSU’s NAACP chapter, opened the meeting for those in attendance to share their thoughts and stories about what they have experienced. Turner and several other members met with OSU President Burns Hargis on Monday to express their concerns.

“This is a part of our history,” Turner said. “It’s not OK, and the way it originated was not OK. For people to go around and say, ‘It’s just a Halloween costume,’ means they don’t have the same ties to their heritage as we do.”

Turner shared a testimony about a conversation she had with a Facebook friend. She tried to teach the friend about African-American history but was met with accusations of oversensitivity.

“They wanted to have an open discussion on race relations in America and cultural sensitivity,” Turner said. “So when I tried to open those lines and explain the history of blackface in America and

This studio is the scene where The Suede Panther, a Stillwater-based band, has created a new way for fans to get full access to a live concert and look inside the process of bands collaborating in the studio.

“As a touring band, we’ve always got to find work,” Hoffman said.

“Music venues shutting down left and right, people’s taste change and all that, so we thought we should do something that we could control.”

As co-creators and founders of “Panther on the Rocks,” Hoffman and Hoffmeier said they enjoy the freedom of having complete control over performance, venue, production and the overall quality of its product.

“There’s no owner to deal with at the end of the night,” Hoffmeier said.

Hoffman and Hoffmeier took sips from their beers as they described how they came up with the idea driving down the road one day.

The idea came from the popular “Live from Daryl’s House,” a live performance show featuring Hall & Oates’ Daryl Hall. The difference with “Panther On The Rocks” is the live, 15-minute concert at the end of the recorded episode. Hoffman refers to the concert ending as “the cherry on top.”

We invited him out, and it went swimmingly.”

Hoffman said everyone had an expectation of whom the band would hire for the first show. To bring on a teenager who leans more toward pop and blues “blew everyone out of the water,” which was exactly what Hoffman said he wanted.

The hit-out-of-nowhere vibe describes the show and the house band members themselves.

“We show up like John Mayer, and then you realize we’re Mötley Crüe,” Hoffman said with a chuckle.

Any band, from anywhere The two said one of the biggest problems was people think the show is catered to one genre of music.

“We want rock, blues, country, pop, R&B, folk … we want it all,” Hoffman said. “We have a pretty wide range.”

The artists are not limited to Oklahoma; the band welcomes musicians

from all over to join it in the studio.

“Any band, from anywhere,” Hoffmeier said.

“We would be happy to have them. If we find someone we love, we’ll find some way to get ahold of them.”

Somebody please explain to me what rock a white American has to be living under to not have received the memo that parading around in blackface is no longer acceptable. Seems like this happens every year, and the same “punishment” is levied. The perpetrators write a letter apologizing for being so hurtful, then we sweep it under the rug and forget about it until it happens again. And again.

same sincerity: “I’m sorry I got caught. I’ll try to be more discreet with my

racism in the future.”

Just once, I’d like to see a real example made of

these twits — expulsion preferably, but suspension would be acceptable. Then they’d have to explain the gap on their record to every future employer. If an administrator or professor trotted around in blackface and broadcast it on social media, I would expect them to be summarily dismissed.

Why do students get to stay? Are they receiving some other tangible punishment that we don’t hear about? I know Oklahoma’s full of racists — I’ve lived here 40-plus years! And I understand that Freedom of Speech means you have

the same right to be an ignorant racist boor as I have to be an informed culturally-sensitive citizen. But for crying out loud, what’s it going to take to get through to these people?

Like it or not, the black, brown, yellow and red people are here to stay. White people — the demographic tables have turned. Welcome to minority status. About the Study

To Participate, you Must

• NOT currently have chronic pain or take pain medications.

• NOT have high blood pressure or take antihypertensive medications.

• NOT take antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications * Additional eligibility criteria do apply

The University of Tulsa, Psychophysiology Laboratory for Affective Neuroscience is conducting a Cherokee Nation, Indian Health Service Oklahoma City Area Office, and University of Tulsa IRB approved study. The goal of this study is to identify potential markers of risk for chronic pain in healthy (currently pain-free) Native American individuals.

Healthy Research Participants Needed

This study is safe and non-invasive. Participants must be able to attend 2 testing sessions (approximately 4-5.5 hours/session). $200 compensation ($100/day) is provided.

Pending distance, participants are reimbursed for travel and lodging.
