About a month into the new decade, 18-year-olds can go to war, go into debt and go to prison, but they can’t be trusted with tobacco.

On Dec. 20, 2019, President Donald Trump signed the Tobacco-21 bill, which prohibits the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21.

For some, this provision marks a win for public health and combats the growing underage use of nicotine. For others, it is a complicated law that won’t solve the root of the issue.

Oklahoma State senior Jenny Perez believes the bill is “messed up.”

“People can go to war for our country, but they can’t smoke a cigarette,” Perez said.

The Tobacco-21 law is not the first time the government has raised the age of certain vices. In 1984, the government implemented the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required states to raise the drinking age to 21.

The Drinking Age Act allowed each state to use their own discretion in implementation but imposed an incentive of withholding highway funds until the age was raised. The implementation of the Tobacco-21 law has not been as clear.

The law allows the Food and Drug Administration 180 days to define the regu-

lations and then 90 days for it to go into effect. Contrary to this, the FDA posted on its website that the law is to go into effect immediately.

This has left retailers rushing to retrain employees and update age verification technology, all while being unsure whether the law is being enforced.

“We are doing the 21 [age requirement], and we are miffed that other people aren’t,” said Joseph Richardson, co-owner of The Vapor Crew in Stillwater.

“We have turned away a lot of people, already today about five or six.”

The push for a higher purchasing age for tobacco products comes after the outbreak of vaping-related lung illnesses that lead to 57 deaths, according to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Although the illness was an extreme case, nicotine has been proven to be highly

addictive and harmful to an undeveloped brain.

Richardson said he is unsure the law will keep tobacco products out of the hands of minors.

“I agree that there are problems with younger kids getting ahold of vaping stuff, but I mostly blame internet sales,” Richardson said. “Why there are still internet sales, I have no idea.”

Oklahoma State senior Laura Degner argues the age is arbitrary and education is more important when it comes to tobacco.

“It’s silly,” Degner said.

“If we are going to pick an age for adulthood, at least be consistent. This is not the conversation we should be having surrounding tobacco. It should be based on education.”

Only time will tell how effective the new Tobacco-21 law will be.

With an almost cult-like reddirt following in Stillwater, fans greeted Whiskey Myers front-man Cody Cannon with cheers and raised beers.

Neon lights cast shadows across muddy tracks in the Tumbleweed Dance Hall parking lot as people pulled up to see Whiskey Myers.

Inside the dimply lit dance hall lived more neon signs, setting a backdrop for the sea of trucker hats, Cinch vests and Ariat.

The Steel Woods, a quartet originally from Nashville, Tennessee, opened for Whiskey Myers. They took the stage with swagger and began a kick-stomping rhythm that caused all in attendance to stop and listen.

The lonesome voice of Wes Bayliss, guitar and lead vocals, speaks to the blues nature of the south.

One line from their song “Straw in the wind”, “… strangers ‘round here disappear like straw in the wind”, speaks to the hardness and pain of a life lived by those trying to get by. A harmonica blares and snaps the audience back to focus as another song begins.

Jason “Rowdy” Cope, lead guitar, kept a cool, steely expression throughout the set as he power strummed on a mint green guitar. The Steel Woods finished their set raising guitars to the air as fleeting chords echoed through the hall.

Just before Whiskey Meyers took the stage, the crowd swelled with anticipation.

The smell of 3.2 beer and tobacco grew stronger as the sextet took their places.

The first few notes vibrated

with deafening sound.

Front-man Cody Cannon interacted with the crowd, receiving hoots and hollers in response.

Originally from Palestine, Texas, Whiskey Meyers is reaching fame across the United States. Their self-titled 2019 album hit No. 2 on the US rock charts and No. 6 on the all-genre Billboard 200. Guitar riffs and an upbeat tempo earns comparisons to Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats or Led Zeppelin in their earlier days.

Recent OSU alumna Brekyn Worbes gushed about Whiskey Myers, explaining why they are her favorite band.

“The music isn’t like today’s mainstream country; they’re more red dirt,” Worbes said. “The music is all so unique in telling a new story in each song.

They’re great souls who love what they do and who love their fans even more.”

It is clear to see why their listeners are widespread and loyal. Their mix of indie styling, twangy yet powerful guitar and bluesy, heartfelt lyrics is highly attractive to a wide range of audiences.

Whiskey Myers’ music is accessible to about everyone, regardless of background.

Everyone in the Tumbleweed found their own space to enjoy. Some two stepped in the back while most looked on, nodding their heads and stomping or clapping. Cornhole bags flew through the air outside as others took a break from the crowd.

Police officers are busy.

With patrols, training, paperwork and the other various duties each officer has, their schedules are packed. But the Oklahoma State University Police Department still made time to focus on diversity.

In 2019, the OSUPD officers were involved in a 10-Hour Inclusive Excellence Certificate Program to help promote diversity in the department.

“No one likes to think of themselves that they’re not doing something the right way,” Chief Leon Jones of the OSUPD said.

Before the program, the department’s diversity training was “window dressing,” Jones said, and he said the new training made an impact on the department.

Jason Kirksey, the vice president for Institutional Diversity at OSU, created the program to be split into several sessions designed to be discussion-based and was intended to cause some discomfort.

Kirksey said OSUPD’s completion of the training shows the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion across campus.

“The fact that the initial area of OSU to complete the program was every sworn police officer, as well as OSU’s Chief Public Safety Officer, Michael Robinson is impressive and makes a strong statement about the university’s core values,” Kirksey said.

Current and future OSU police officers will be involved in diversity training.

One of OSUPD’s core values is respect, a value which was reinforced by the diversity program.

The program taught principles assuring officers that awkward conversations are okay, seeing differences is okay and giving individuals equal treatment instead of equitable treatment often leads to insufficient results.

All of these concepts have their foundations in respect.

Captain Colt Chandler of the OSUPD explained why it is crucial for a university police department, especially, to adopt values of transparency and respect.

“We pride ourselves in the sense that we get to capture people’s perspectives from across the globe,” Chandler said. “This is a snapshot in their lives, but if we can make an impact

on what policing should be, then they can have a model of what to expect when they go home.”

The department will provide this training for every incoming officer, and Jones plans on requiring support staff and other citizens to take it as well. The program will also be updated biannually, and new versions will be required for every current and future member of the department.

The OSUPD hopes these efforts toward betterment will continue, and Jones encourages other campus departments to follow in their footsteps and incorporate the program into their departments.

“For Dr. Kirksey to come up with this is brilliant” Jones said.
