Miss Black OSU discusses her year as queen and the impact of MLK Jr.’s activism

With three weeks left in her term as Miss Black OSU, the O’Colly had the opportunity to talk with Aundrea Jackson about what being MBOSU has been like and what MLK Jr. Day means to her.

Crowned MBOSU on Feb. 9, 2019, Jackson has had nearly a year to solidify her beliefs on activism and the power of black activists.

What does MLK Jr. Day mean to you?

“For me, MLK day is a representation of activism. I feel like we have a lot of activists that came before us that don’t necessarily get recognized, so for us to have a day when one of them does [get recognized] is phenomenal. Especially with the impact that Dr. MLK made, not only in his day, but today, too.”

Have you participated in any MLK Jr. day activism events?

“I haven’t been to an MLK day parade, but I feel like it’s powerful to watch them. I would love to see a parade like that on campus. We tried to do one last year, but it didn’t work out. Hopefully, if we can get more volunteers, we’ll be able to pull it off.”

What has your year being Miss Black OSU been like?

“It has definitely been busy, but every moment of it has been worth it.

I’ve had the opportunity to do so many things… interviews, speeches, poetry. Pretty much everything across the board.

I get to implement my platform as an activist, which its been specifically about activism and encouraging it on campus, not only when unfortunate events happen, but all the time. So That’s my favorite part, implementing my platform. And its not necessarily to the scale of Dr. Martin Luther King, but it is something that individuals can do on campus.”

How do you feel about the Miss Black OSU Pageant coming up again?

“I’m excited. It’s the 50th anniversary so we’re going to have the past queens come. I feel like, with the queens, we’ll also have a better audience than last year.

It’s also Black History Month, so that’s exciting as well.”

Any idea how you’ll feel passing on the crown to you successor?

“I think it’s humbling.

One: for me to get the opportunity to do something

like that. Two: I know that the contestants we have will be impactful on this campus. It’s a bittersweet moment because you know you did everything you could but you know that you’re also passing it off to someone who is going to do the same. I feel humbled.”

During the past year, does any one memory stand out as particularly impactful?

“I feel like I’ve had a lot... But my favorite would probably be the day of the pageant. I wrote a poem, and I go to present it. It was called “Being Black”. I think it emphasized how I felt as a black student on campus, and I think a lot of other students were able to relate to that. I think sharing my story and relating to the other stories around me was probably the most powerful thing I’ve done during my time.”

Is there any message you’d like to share as Miss Black OSU? “Continue to be an activist not only when incidents happen, because unfortunately they do happen around MLK day, but continuing to be an activist at all times, as opposed to momentarily.

that we constantly need to be doing. Not just when its beneficial for us.”

LOOKING AHEAD! with it. It is so important to choose God’s way into forgiveness and a new life with Jesus while we have opportunity.

What an alternative God has set before us! The sure promise of a new heaven and new earth! Not something temporary that will last only a few years, or even a few hundred years, but is everlasting. We will live in the presence of God, having a new body that will never die; similar to the one Jesus has now, as He sits at God’s right hand, waiting until all things are made subject to Him. Don’t give up the eternal for the temporary. Put your trust in Christ; let Him be the Lord of your life. Lay up treasure in His eternal kingdom. As someone has said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Look ahead to what God has promised to those who choose His way.

Oklahoma State University’s New Frontiers project received a $50 million gift from alumni to rename and build a new facility for the agricultural college, OSU announced on Wednesday.

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will be renamed the Ferguson College of Agriculture, named after OSU alumni Kayleen and Larry Ferguson. The name change is pending approval from the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents.

The Fergusons, through the Ferguson Family Foundation, pledged a designated $25 million to start the fundraising campaign to construct a new, innovative teaching and research building to replace Agriculture Hall, as well as a $25 million endowment for the college’s operations.

The New Frontiers campaign is seeking to raise another $50 million in private support to construct the $100 million facility, which is set to break ground in the spring of 2021.

The vice president for agricultural programs and dean of the agricultural college, Thomas G. Coon, said the New Frontiers program and the significant gift it has received will usher in a new era of innovation to

“I think having that noteworthy of a gift come for our college of agriculture, it supports the heritage of the institution,” Coon said. “At the same time, it’s not just about the past. It’s about projecting our college forward as a leader nationally and internationally.”

billion-dollar industry of agriculture in Oklahoma and the region.

“The Fergusons’ gift ensures we can always recruit and support the brightest minds in the world,” Hargis said. “The Ferguson College of Agriculture will be a destination for researchers, professors and students.

One can only imagine what discoveries will be made and how the world will change because of the work being done in OSU Agriculture.”

Gov. Kevin Stitt, an OSU alumnus, was in

attendance for the announcement and spoke on the impact of agriculture in Oklahoma. The governor said across the 77 counties of Oklahoma, there are currently 38,000 farms that amount to $42 billion in direct economic activity for the state, employing over 300,000 Oklahomans.

“The success and rich history of agriculture in our state is due, in a large part, to this institution and what it means to this state, the natural resources that this university contributes to,” Stitt said.

“So I commend the university for the innovation, for the teaching, the research and the extension efforts that have been critical to the growth of our state. OSU really sets the pace in research for our entire state.”

After announcing the $50 million gift and renaming of the agricultural college, Larry Ferguson said he hopes this venture will have a global impact and inspire others to do the same.

“We want to be able to impact people throughout the world and help feed

the world,” Ferguson said. “I really believe that Oklahoma State can be a center point, can be a light in feeding the people of the world. It’ll make a tremendous difference.”

The new building, which is set to break ground in 2021, is expected to be completed by 2023. It is set to be built diagonal from the original Agriculture Hall, east of Monroe Street and north of the Henry Bellmon Research Center.

To me it’s like a glorified day for somebody who did something great for my people. I don’t know how many people take it seriously, but it’s not really another day. It’s a glorified day to look back on everything that we’ve been through. We’ve made advancements, but we’re still going through the same stuff. It reminds me that we’re still fighting the fight.”

Through about two and a half seasons as the coach of the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team, Mike Boynton has 42 wins under his belt.

He also has 42 losses, as his winning percentage at the helm of the Cowboys sits at exactly 50 percent after OSU’s 76-64 loss at the hands of Texas on Wednesday evening at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

As the Longhorns slammed through dunk after dunk, punishing the rims that tower over Eddie Sutton court, they also outscored OSU 4518 from 3-point range, sending home about 7,000 disappointed fans who watched yet another offensive train wreck on behalf of the Cowboys.

The Cowboys have opened Big 12 play with four straight losses and a goose egg in their conference win column, their worst conference start since the Brad Underwood season of 2016-17, and have lost seven of their past nine contests.

The difference in morale surrounding the program between around the time of Thanksgiving and today, Jan. 16, is like night and day.

Kathy Essmiller looked down at the budget for the fine arts department at Oklahoma Christian School.

For her entire career, the budget had never increased, even though they kept gaining students. It only declined or, if they were lucky, stayed the same.

As a result, the fine arts department at the school shared resources with one another. Essmiller had to teach her band students with what she had because fine arts are just not a priority in schools.

Many college students face this same deficit.

As the cost of textbooks rises, students are forced to either comply with textbook companies and buy their product or turn to their classmates and share resources.

This lack of college textbook affordability has led Essmiller to become an Open Educational Resources librarian.

“When I came to Oklahoma State to work on my Ph.D., my goal was to create a beginning jazz improv curriculum that then could be published openly so that all instructors could use it,” Essmiller said. “When I got here, I found out that actually had a name, and

Essmiller is one of 24 2019-2020 OER Research Fellows and she is the second OSU researcher to participate in the program. Her job is to promote the benefits of communal resources at the university.

Bonnie Cain-Wood, the OSU Communications Manager, said Essmiller’s work is making a difference. In just one course, Essmiller lowered hundreds of students’ textbook costs.

“Over in the journalism school, Craig Freeman is one of the faculty who has adopted an open

textbook for his class,” Cain-Wood said. “That one is really impactful because Craig adopted that for his Media in a Diverse Society class that has an enrollment of about 400.”

Cain-Wood said she hopes, in the future, every student who comes to OSU will have at least one class with an OER. According to the American Council on Education OERs go beyond just textbooks.

“Open textbooks are a subset of OER, a broad category that includes courses, assessments, articles, case studies, and many other types of edu-

cational materials,” the ACE website stated.

“The principle of OER is that materials produced by one party can be used freely by others.”

While not every student has had a course with an OER, the number of classes that use them is growing.

Junior Raegan Higgins has been in a class with an open textbook, and she said that was helpful for the course.

“We all had open access to it,” Higgins said.

“We were able to print off pages that we needed to. We had quizzes out of the book, but she gave us the book for free.”

Christian Maldonado is also a junior, but he hasn’t had a class with an OER. He said that while he thinks they would help him in college, he can see why some classes

still don’t use them.

“I can see points on both sides,” Maldonado said. “The author who wrote [the textbook] is selling a product, so they are entitled to set the price.”

Essmiller said that while OERs make for better education regardless of affordability, she understands why some classes are necessary to not have open resources.

“I would not ever go so far as to say that, at Oklahoma State University, every course should have a zero-dollar textbook,” Essmiller said.

“That’s not necessarily the best thing for every teacher or course. It takes a lot of work for faculty to engage with open educational resources and curate materials that are appropriate and meaningful for their classes.”

Even with these exceptions, Essmiller said she hasn’t stopped her fight to lower students’ textbook costs. She said what’s been most successful in her tenure as the OER librarian is the personal communications and interactions with people who’ve benefited from and experienced OERs. “People have quality experiences in a class that has no cost,” Essmiller said. “They go tell their friends, and instructors realize that they’re able to personalize the teaching experience to meet their own skills and goals using open resources. Then, they go tell their friends, and it continues to grow.”

In their last dual, the No. 9 Oklahoma State wrestling team turned in its best performance of the season with a 36-3 thrashing of Northern Colorado.

The Cowboys (5-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12) will look to continue its impressive run this weekend as West Virginia and No. 10 Pittsburgh travel to GIA on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Friday’s dual marks the beginning of a grueling stretch for the Cowboys.

“I don’t look at rankings too much,” Wittlake said, “I just try to take every match the same (way), I go

to the mat with the same mindset.”

After losing his first match of the season at the Southern Scuffle, Wittlake said he feels like a weight has been lifted off of his shoulders. “(The loss) enabled me to open up a little more and let loose in my matches and not wrestle so defensive,” said Wittlake following the previous dual, “That’s something I want to continue to do the next couple weeks.”

John Smith said this week that the lineup is mostly set and will look for several wrestlers to improve their consistency as they get closer to

the NCAA tournament.

Specifically, he said he wants to see Anthony Montalvo (184) improve his technique as the season progresses.

“I think he realizes now that he needs to score more points,” Smith said, “If you’re going to help us, especially now and in the future, your skills need to get better,” Although most of the lineup has stayed the same throughout the season, lineup questions remain at 141 and 174. Kaden Gfeller (141) and Joe Smith (174) each wrestled at the Southern Scuffle but have yet to make their dual debuts this season.

Unless something changes, expect Gfeller and Smith to weigh-in but it would not be surprising to see Dusty Hone and Andrew Shomers remain the starters in the two duals.

John Smith said in order to have a successful season, he will need to count on freshmen such as Wittlake and Montalvo, but also guys like Hone and Shomers to continue to improve.

“If they can rise to the occasion, then it’s going to be a good year,” Smith said, “I’ve seen some good things though in the last match and definitely in the Southern Scuffle with some of those younger guys.”

Turner’s Take: Which films will win Oscars at the Academy Awards?

Monday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards. This awards ceremony is to recognize the best films, filmmakers, on and off screen and more of 2019.

Here, we are going to take an in-depth look in the major Academy Award nominees, who I think will win, major names to be left out and more.

Actors in a leading role: Antonio Banderas – “Pain and Glory” Leonardo DiCaprio – “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood” Adam Driver – “Marriage Story” Joaquin Phoenix – “Joker” Jonathan Pryce – “The Two Popes” My prediction: Joaquin Phoenix – “Joker” “Joker” leads the Academy Awards in nominations this year with 11. The major question to ask now is whether the Academy is ready to accept a comic book movie as a serious contender for major awards. The nominations may say one thing, but the decision is more than likely going to be a political one for the Academy. If “Joker” does not win the Oscar for Best Picture, then I think they will make it up to Phoenix and his masterful

performance with this award.

Closely behind him could be DiCaprio and Driver, who both turned in eye catching performances in their roles, but I believe those movies will win awards in other categories.

Charlize Theron – “Bombshell” Renee Zellweger – “Judy” My prediction: Cynthia Erivo – “Harriet” The cultural significance of a movie portraying a person as important as Harriet Tubman cannot be overlooked when it comes to the Academy’s decision.

Erivo is the only actor of color being recognized at the Awards, which she said was “bittersweet” according to the Chicago Tribune. “Harriet” is also only nominated for one other award (Music: Original Song), which comes across as a slap in the face to a movie so important in today’s world.

Animated Feature Film: “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”

“I Lost My Body” “Klaus” “Missing Link” ‘Toy Story 4” My Prediction: “Missing

Link” The stop-motion animation style always makes for a great, visually pleasing motion picture, and “Missing Link” was the best of the year. An entertaining and captivating story with great voice acting from Hugh Jackman, Zach Galifianakis and Zoe Saldana, to name a few. I think the story, voice acting, animation style and overall presentation of “Missing Link” propel it winning the Oscar.

The acting, production, camera work and more not only makes “Joker” the best comic book film ever made, it makes it the best film of 2019. Phoenix’s performance and work on the film only boost it more. I truly do not see another film from 2019 beating “Joker” for the Oscar.
