Frigid weather descends on Stillwater to start spring semester T r evor Smit h staff reporter @ o c olly

Waking up for an 8 a.m. class is never fun, especially when it’s 5 degrees outside.

Oklahoma State University students were welcomed back for the spring semester with below-freezing temperatures Tuesday.

The high was barely 20 degrees, while the low was a brisk 4 degrees.

Classes were in full swing at OSU, but several schools in Oklahoma and Texas, including the University of Texas and Texas A&M, canceled classes.

In a statement from the University of Texas, students were told to stay safe and prepare for the “threat of extreme winter weather.” Monday night, OSU tweeted a similar statement, which assured students classes would start as scheduled.

The cold weather didn’t discourage most OSU students, though. Many found themselves braving the below-freezing temperatures to make it to their first classes of the semester, including Dylan Gilbert, a business management sophomore from Amarillo, Texas.

“My first class was at 9 this morning,” Gilbert said. “I was excited to be starting school back today, but I wasn’t excited to be walking in 5-de-

gree weather at 8:30 this morning.”

However, even with the cold walk to class, Gilbert said he did not consider skipping class.

“There was no part of me that wanted to skip this morning, as I was very excited about the class I was going to,” Gilbert said, “If it was any other class, then I might have found myself skipping today, and if the weather is like this again, then there is a strong

possibility that I won’t be going to my 9 a.m.”

With excitement came despair for some students, including Riley Cooper, a mechanical engineering freshman from Van Alstyne, Texas.

“I had a 9 a.m. class,” Cooper said. “I was excited to be back, but I wasn’t excited to be going back to class and especially not excited about being in the cold weather.”

Cooper said he was

prepared for the cold weather and bundled himself up in layers before heading to class.

“The cold weather made me really consider skipping this morning, but I decided to go even though it was stupid cold outside,” Cooper said.

Look, you already know what you’re going into with this movie.

Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra directs an action thriller movie with Liam Neeson. Essentially, it’s going to be off the rails.

Neeson plays Michael MacCauley, a family man and broker for an insurance company, who has been on the same train line for 10 years in Hudson.

However, this time is different.

Vera Farmiga just randomly introduces herself to him and makes him an offer that he could easily refuse but doesn’t.

He needs to find one person who doesn’t belong on the train and put a tracking device on that person, and in return, she’ll give him $100,000.

At this point, Neeson must decide who is the person that doesn’t belong on this train.

The action and suspense on a transit train were delivered well. Collet-Serra knows how to pull off excellent shots in a space as small as a train. He

was crafty with tight shots in his last movie, “The Shallows,” and was again with “The Commuter.”

I have never been on a transit train before, but after seeing this movie, I know every part of one. Liam Neeson’s character was the reason why the movie was kept on the rails. It’s crazy to think a man, 65, still looks that good. His serious face is a part of action-movie lore at this point. He took a pounding in this movie, and his voice still has that famous growl.

“The Commuter” was in such a hurry to get to the end of the line that there wasn’t time to enjoy the scenery.

It feels as if they were in a hurry to edit this movie, only leaving characters with humor or unexpected outcomes out of their conversations. It’s probably asking a bit too much for an action movie like this.

When competing for a championship in a stacked Big 12 conference, winning at home is essential, and Oklahoma State women’s basketball coach Jim Littell knows it.

“If you want to remain in the top of league play and contend for a championship and a run in the NCAA tournament, you gotta win your home games,” Littell said.

Wednesday’s game will be the first back in GIA for OSU since its 96-82 Bedlam victory against Oklahoma on Jan. 7, and it will also be the first home game since the Cowgirls found out they lost defensive stalwart Areanna Combs for the rest of the season to injury.

With two wins behind it and a long stretch ahead of it, the Oklahoma State men’s tennis team has a Sweet 16 run on its mind.

Five letter winners from last season return to the court for coach Jay Udwadia in 2018, and that will be significant for a team ranked No. 15 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.

Julian Cash and Mathieu Scaglia lead the Cowboys.

Scaglia is a sophomore and the No. 93 singles player in the ITA rankings.

Cash, a senior from Brighton in the United Kingdom, was the Cowboys’ No. 1 singles player for much of last season and is a two-time ITA All-American doubles player alongside former Cowboy Arjun Kadhe, who graduated in 2017.

This season, Cash will pair up with freshman Luke Hammond.

“It’s going to take a little bit of time, obviously, for us to gel together and get our games working as well as we can together,” Cash said. “It’s exciting, and we have a good chance to play well together.”

Cash and Hammond were the only doubles pairing Udwadia kept the same in the Cowboys’ first two regularseason matches Sunday against Lamar University and Bryant University.

The Cowboys won the doubles point easily in their first two matches, but Cash said he and Hammond are still working off the rust.

2017 brought new heights for the Cowboys, as they rose to No. 4 for the first time in program history and were selected to host an NCAA regional for the second straight season.

But with the graduation of Kadhe, Lucas Gerch and Lukas Finzelberg, the Cowboys have three lineup spots to fill.

“Obviously, it’s going to be tough losing all of those guys but nice for some of the guys who were maybe a little bit lower last year to have their opportunity and push forward, and so far, everyone is doing a good job,” Cash said.

With a new season comes another gauntlet of a schedule for OSU. The Cowboys will face eight ranked opponents, including No. 1 Wake Forest on Feb. 11 in Stillwater.

All six teams in the Big 12 are ranked in the ITA’s preseason poll, with No. 8 Texas the highest and defending regular-season and tournament champion TCU at No. 10.

“The Big 12 is great as usual,” Udwadia said. “That’s always going to be fun to play that season.

“And we have a nonconference schedule that’s just as great as well. There’s no easy match, but that’s how we schedule. We want to play the best, and that’s

Udwadia is in his sixth year at OSU, recording 92 victories since taking over in June 2012.

He has seen the team rise from a winless, last-place finish in the Big 12 in 2015 to second in the conference last season.

The Cowboys were picked to finish fourth in the conference this season, behind TCU, Texas and Baylor.

“We’ve had all kinds of picks,” Cash said. “We’ve been picked to lose to teams, and we’ve beaten them. Looking at all of the teams in the Big 12, there’s a lot of new players, so I think it’s going to be pretty interesting.

“I think it’s going to be pretty even across all the teams in the Big 12. So it’s going to be an exciting season, and I think we have a good chance both in the regular season and in the tournament.”
