“All of them had their guns drawn”: Mike Boynton shares a story about an early encounter with police

Mike Boynton shared a story about a scary incident with police he had when he was 12.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton remembers every detail of that day.

He was 12 years old.

The weather was nice, he wore blue shorts and a grey t-shirt riding his bike around the New York City neighborhood he called home. He enjoyed playing outside, where as many New Yorkers know, police sirens are as common as any sound outside.

But something was different about them that day. “(Police sirens) very rarely alarm you especially if you don’t think you’re part of the FRIDAY JUNE 5, 2020

situation,” Boynton said. “So I’m riding my bike and probably 100 yards behind me, I hear a police siren.

And I just keep riding along and I hear it for the next minute or so, getting eerily closer to where I am. So I’m looking around and trying to see if maybe here up in front of me maybe somethings going on.”

But Boynton’s eerie feeling was justified.

After minutes of looming, the police car ran over the curb, drove on the same sidewalk where Boynton was peddling, and halted its brakes right before it could collide with the 12-year-old’s bicycle.

“I jumped off the

bike, threw my hands up against the building that was right behind me, and with a state of confusion, really didn’t know what to do for the next several minutes,” Boynton said during an interview Thursday. “I had never seen this before, but I see three officers get out of one police car.

I only knew that two police officers would be in the car at once so when three officers jumped out I was really confused.

“And all of them had their guns drawn.”

One officer pinned him up against the building, searched him for a weapon and fervently interrogated him.

“I was so flustered… at this point I’m sweating profusely, I may have gone to the bathroom on myself,” Boynton said. “That took about 30 seconds but it felt like forever.”

Following the interrogation, Boynton overheard one of the officers: “Hey, I think we’re at the wrong place.”

The police had a harsh reaction to him that day because of a miscommunication.

The 12-year-old Boynton fit the description of someone who had robbed a store in that area in the past.

“That didn’t necessarily make it better,” Boynton said. “Even then, at 12 years old, I was aware that even

if I had gone into a store and stole a bag of potato chips or a candy bar or soda or something, do I need three cop cars to jump a curb and pull their guns out on me to bring me to justice?”

This story is one of the main reasons the recent killing of George Floyd and nationwide protests resonate with Boynton so much. He’s been face-to-face with a similar situation and knows the thoughts that must’ve been racing through Floyd’s mind at the time of his death.

Still, despite the horrible things he witnessed that day, Boynton also sees positives

stemming from this new movement of potential social change.

“In some ways I think there’s some positive going on right now in response to what’s been problematic for a long time,” Boynton said. “A lot of my thoughts have been to try to be thorough and mindful of the people in the audience and understanding that I also have a responsibility, first as a man and a father and husband, a son, a brother, a friend and then in my profession where I am a mentor and leader for young people who are living through this and hopefully we’ll see things change.”
