“People ask me why I call Kenneth my big man,” Erica said. “I say because I don’t have to ask him to help. At an early age, he understood that, ‘OK, my dad’s not around, and I got to help my mom out however I can.’ He put groceries in the house or go ride the bus to go get the groceries. Although Edison-McGruder tried to help out however he could, his free time kept getting more and more devoted to sports. Approaching the games with the same work ethic as he did at home, it didn’t take long for recruiters to notice.

For Edison-McGruder, it was more of a motto.

If his team was losing, it wouldn’t matter how high the margin was, EdisonMcGruder kept trying.

“He’s what I call the clutch player,” Erica said. “You could be down by 15 or 20, and you could depend on Kenneth to bring you back.

I’ve seen him do that 100 times.”

His determination and athleticism started to get him noticed around the nation. It was then, the dream of sports taking Edison-McGruder somewhere became a reality.

As a four-star prospect and the No. 30 safety in the country, according to Scout.com, a slew of teams, including LSU, TCU and California, began recruiting him. Realizing his opportunity, EdisonMcGruder stopped playing basketball his junior year so he wouldn’t risk getting hurt.

Out of all the schools that

recruited him, OSU impressed him most. Coming on a visit during Christmas break, Edison-McGruder got to talk with the coaches and players on a more intimate level, which made him feel like a part of a family.

“It was more of getting a feel for the players on my trip,” Edison-McGruder said.

“There were a few students here, but it was more of a smaller team bonding experience. I liked that.”

Edison-McGruder committed Dec. 19, 2014, and in 2015, he was one of only four true freshmen to get on the field. His versatility from high school began to show in practice, and soon the coordinators took notice, earning him playing time in 12 games. The thought of his

daughter Kaleah, 1, drove Edison-McGruder to keep fighting for the chance to make the starting squad.

Although he was getting some reps, Edison-McGruder was a member of a large mass of OSU defensive backs. He was the hardworking safety known for his hitting style, but he had yet to get a spot in the permanent starting rotation.

He needed a chance to be noticed.

‘On the right track’ Glenn Spencer needed a star linebacker.

The Cowboys’ defensive coordinator was at spring camp, and his starting star backer, Jordan Burton, was injured. The star position,

a mix between a linebacker and a safety, is a tough one to fill, but Spencer decided to try out one of the younger defensive backs, the one with the hyphenated last name.

“I came in the coach’s office and he said he wanted to try me at star, and I took it and rolled with it,” EdisonMcGruder said. “I didn’t argue with it; I just took advantage.”

Edison-McGruder stood out from the rest of the pack.

The starting defense began to learn who he was based on his aggressiveness, the starting offense because of his pain-inflicting tackles, but most importantly, Spencer took notice because of Edison-McGruder’s passion.

“He’s a very aggressive man,” Spencer said. “He

loves to play football, and you can’t say that about every kid out there. He’s asking questions every day. You can tell he’s hungry, and a lot of kids are not like that.”

Despite Burton’s return, putting Edison-McGruder back to second-string free safety, Spencer said EdisonMcGruder will see a lot of playing time as a key reserve in most packages and a starter in some packages.

Teammates say they love having him be a key part of the defense this year. Starting middle linebacker Chad Whitener said it doesn’t matter where Edison-McGruder plays, he will make an impact.

“He can play whatever he wanted on the field because of how athletic he is,”

Whitener said. “He’s literally one of those guys who can do whatever he wants on the football field.”

Edison-McGruder said he can’t believe he’s made it so far. Erica said his willingness at a young age to listen and learn is what’s brought him the success he’s had today as a player and a parent.

“Kenneth turned a bad situation into gold,” Erica said. “That’s the way he’s always been. He’s never been a person who quits.

“He knows what he wants and he’s going for it.”

When Oklahoma State’s kickoff return team lines up Sept. 3 against Southeast Louisiana, a man with “Sanders” on his jersey will likely wait at the back.

He won’t wear No. 21 like his father did, but No. 26 Barry J. Sanders will carry the load of kicks this season, according to the Cowboys’ depth chart released Thursday.

OSU coach Mike Gundy said Sanders has done well returning kicks this fall.

“We have a group that’ll return punts and kicks,” Gundy said. “We feel like we have more depth there than we did last year.”

Much speculation has been made about Sanders’ role at OSU since his intent to use his last year of eligibility as a Cowboy was reported in February after graduating from Stanford in June.

Sanders is among the five running backs expected to receive carries for the Cowboys this season.

The list of ball carriers out of the backfield is expected to be cut after the first games of the season, Gundy said, so touches will be at a premium.

“If there’s 80 plays on offense, we’re not gonna split ‘em evenly,” Gundy said. “One guy might get five plays a game. One guy might get three plays a game. We’re a little different this season based on the strengths that each one FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2016

If the depth chart holds, Sanders will take over as kick returner for running back Jeff Carr, who had 29 returns without a touchdown in 2015.

Commercial service expected to elevate recruiting When the first commercial airplane landed in Stillwater on Tuesday, it has the potential to bring more than fans to Boone Pickens Stadium.

“Now (recruits are) 10

minutes away from being on our campus,” Gundy said.

In 2004, the NCAA banned universities from using charter or private planes to deliver recruits to campus.

Before American Airlines flew into Stillwater Regional Airport, someone in the OSU football program had to pick up recruits in Oklahoma City or Tulsa every time one came on a visit. The recruit had to load his things into the car and drive another hour after the flight to get on campus.

Defensive coordinator

Glenn Spencer said he obviously hasn’t seen a boost in recruiting since commercial service was added, but he said he is sure it will. “(Recruits are) not having to go on I-35 for 45 minutes and across Highway 51 for 15 minutes,” Spencer said.

More than 90 players listed on the Cowboys’ roster are from outside Oklahoma, so adding commercial service has a “huge impact for our program.”

Cornelius set as Rudolph’s backup

He isn’t an ideal No. 2 behind Mason Rudolph, but he is all the Cowboys have.

“We’re comfortable because he’s the guy,” Gundy said. “We don’t have a choice.”

Cornelius, at 6-foot-6, 218 pounds, is the opposite of J.W. Walsh, Rudolph’s backup from a year ago.

Walsh did the most damage with his running ability. He was the secondleading rusher for OSU in 2015 and led the Cowboys with more rushing touchdowns than the rest of the team combined.

Cornelius is a pocket passer. He threw for more than 9,000 yards at Bushland High School about 15 miles west of Amarillo, Texas. At OSU, though, he has thrown five passes for eight yards.

“He’s done really well, but we all know that until we get out there and play,” Gundy said. “You don’t know how a young man’s gonna react. He’s been here; he understands the program; he’s made plays.

I feel like he understands the offense, but like most teams in the country, you’re always concerned about if you lose at that position.”

Redshirt freshman quarterback John Kolar competed with Cornelius for the backup role throughout spring and fall camps.

Kolar is more of a runner than Cornelius but was

left off the depth chart.

“I’m in favor of striping the stadium,” Gundy said. “I’m in favor of using pom-poms. I think that’s a part of college football.”

The striping plan goes throughout Boone Pickens Stadium, including the student sections and 300 level.

Gundy said it’s important for fan bases to get creative with supporting their team, and OSU could do a better job of its inventiveness.

“When I go home on Saturday nights and I’m watching games and I see that, it gets my attention,” Gundy said. “When I see 60, 70, 80,000 people screaming and they’re all shaking their pom-poms the same color, to me, that’s impressive.

“I think that’s the direction we need to go in here at Oklahoma State.”

“I think we have the bodies and the talent. Everyone just needs to stay healthy, and I think if we all encourage each other to stay on top of recovery and keep each other encouraged physically and emotionally, I think we can get there.”

What started as an idea last year in the Boone Pickens Stadium press box is now real.

Our editor-in-chief, Nathan Ruiz, and I wanted to make O’Colly Sports something more. We knew we had assets we weren’t taking advantage of, and because of that, our readers suffered.

We expanded our editorial staff. We recruited more sports writers. We stayed in the newsroom until 3 a.m. to prepare the launch.

We did it for you.

The O’Zone has launched.

It’s “the hottest place for sports.” That’s why if you follow us on Twitter, @theozoneonline, you’ll see a plethora of fire emojis.

But the O’Zone is more than only a spot for sports.

It’s the O’Colly’s new website that features a mixture of sports and entertainment, both Oklahoma State and national. O’Colly Sports provides all the information you need about OSU sports. The O’Zone will not only inform but also entertain at the same time. I want you to look forward to our content. If you don’t, tell me what you want.

Because I want you to have fun, I called on our design editor, Jordan Bishop. Every week, Bishop will bring you “Bishop’s Babbles.” It could end up being your favorite source for entertainment. We enjoy Bishop’s knowledge in the newsroom every day;

now, so can you.

Also, for the first time, the O’Zone will cover club sports for students. We get emails every semester requesting coverage of club sports; now you have it.

Thanks to a staff of more than 30 writers, club sports such as rugby and quidditch will have reporters on their sidelines like OSU football and soccer. If your respective sport doesn’t get coverage, let us know, and the O’Zone will send a reporter.

This is what the O’Zone has now, but we’ll continue to generate ideas through the semester and beyond. Maybe we’ll add some ideas from our readers. Like I said, the O’Zone is for you.
