More than 100 Oklahoma State students who decided to live in Stillwater’s Avid Square apartments this fall have no choice but to change their plans.

The Avid Square apartments were anticipated to reach completion before the start of OSU’s fall semester. However, the apartments will not open until “the first quarter of 2018,” said Craig Wack, Public Relations Coordinator at EdR Collegiate Housing, Avid Square’s parent company.

“We had construction delays that made it run over its time that we expected it to open,” Wack said. “We did what we could to try and get it to open on time, but we weren’t able to do it, so that’s why we moved the opening date back to 2018.”

The Avid Square apartments are under construction on West Fourth Avenue between South Ramsey Street and South Hester Street.

Wack did not specify why this construction process has

run behind schedule.

“This has been a difficult decision for us to make, but after evaluating all options related to construction delays, we have decided it is in the best interest of all to postpone the opening of the community until 2018 and notify you now so you will be able to find alternate housing,” said an email sent to those who planned to live in Avid Square. Students received this correspondence from Avid Square in June.

EdR Collegiate Housing made an effort to ensure students who leased Avid Square property didn’t suffer financially. Refunds were accessible to these people on the day the email informed them of Avid Square’s delayed completion.

Individuals who leased Avid Square property were granted compensation for their application fees and deposits. In some cases, this included “incentive gift cards.”

“Basically, they were out no money at the end of the day,” Wack said.

Although the students’ money was returned, the delay still impacts this large group of individuals who must handle

the hassle of finding alternative housing options for the fall semester.

“We understand changing your plans for housing two months before your move-in is stressful and if there is anything we can do to help, please let us know,” said the email sent to students who planned to live in the Avid Square apartments. The email was signed with the names of Chris Richards, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at EdR Collegiate Housing and Heather Campbell, Community Manager of Avid Square.

Wack said he thinks 125 students had leased Avid Square properties.

Desiree Atkins, an OSU sophomore, is one of those students. In a Twitter message, Atkins said before the email was sent to her in June to inform her of Avid Square’s delayed completion, she was not given an indication that the Avid Square apartments would not open for the fall 2017 semester.

Because of the Avid Square delays, EdR Collegiate Housing provided an option for students to live at The Reserve on Perkins, Avid Square’s “sister property” in Stillwater. Wack said about 25 people who had planned to live in Avid Square

chose to move to The Reserve.

Wack said he is unsure of the dollar amount EdR Collegiate Housing paid to cover the students’ refunds and relocations.

Atkins, who will reside at The Reserve this fall, said students who switched from Avid Square to The Reserve

will have the opportunity to relocate to the completed Avid Square apartments without any additional fees and will “not be charged for moving out and having a lease,” although they are not exempt from paying rent.

Still, many individuals who leased Avid Square property decided to explore housing options other than The Reserve.

Bob Tourtellotte, owner of the Maple 500 Apartments at Maple and West Street, said the Avid Square delay has caused several apartment complexes and properties in Stillwater to attract more interest than they do during a typical summer.

“It has caused an increase in traffic just because people gotta find a place,” Tourtellotte said. “Area landlords have heard their phones ringing more often and have been showing a lot more apartments in the last two

weeks because of Avid Square than they would have in years past.”

Tourtellotte said two students have transferred from Avid Square to his Maple 500 Apartments, and several other students and their family members have inquired about Maple 500.

“We are happy to have anybody that we can, so that’s been good for us,” Tourtellotte said. “(We have) two tenants that we wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Tourtellotte said the housing market in Stillwater is evolving drastically because of the numerous large apartment complexes, such as Avid Square, that have recently been built or are under

construction in the OSU “campus zone.” He said as an owner of apartments, he isn’t certain how he would react to the Avid Square situation because he hasn’t experienced it before, but he said he thinks he would handle the issue similarly to how EdR Collegiate housing is.

“If I owned The Reserve on Perkins and I was building Avid Square, then yeah, I’d definitely start offering apartments over at The Reserve on Perkins, and I’d do everything I could to try to help those people,” Tourtellotte said. “They have a contract with them, and they didn’t live up to their end of the contract, and

so they’ve gotta do everything they can to try to fulfill that contract, and one of those ways would be to help students find places to live.”

Atkins and her roommate still intend to live in Avid Square when construction is done.

Atkins said she was disappointed when she learned the apartments will not be ready for the fall semester, but she is glad the builders aren’t cutting corners to reach a deadline.

“When I received my email I was pretty devastated because I chose to live there for a reason, but I took a step back and talked to a lot of people and it was probably for

the best,” she said. “I’d be more upset if I were living in a nice apartment paying a lot and everything isn’t up to par due to rushing. Quality takes time and I respect that, but the way they went about it wasn’t the most professional in my opinion.”

When completed, Avid Square will offer furnished one-, two- and four-bedroom apartments with cable and Internet for OSU students. The apartment complex will feature a swimming pool, a fitness center and an entertainment lounge.

Wack said even with the construction delay, the plans for the apartments have not been altered, so

these facilities will be available to future Avid Square residents.

“The amenities and things aren’t changing,” Wack said. “None of the quality of the building’s gonna change. We just had some delays, and we thought it best to delay the opening so we could get things right. Also, for what we did in June (emails and refunds for students), we wanted to do our best to do right by the people who wanted to sign up and live there.”

OSU theater department prepares for 2017-18 season H alli e Hart staff reporter @ hart_hall ie_

From a suspenseful drama to a romantic musical, Oklahoma State University’s Department of Theatre will present a spectrum of theatrical styles with its four major productions this season.

The OSU Department of Theatre has released its schedule of 2017-18 shows, and designs for upcoming productions are already in progress.

This year, the Department of Theatre is introducing the Season Ticket “Flex-Pass,” which allows theater patrons to hold four tickets that aren’t show-specific.

Season tickets for all four productions are $40 for general admission, $30 for seniors (at least 65 years old) and $25 for students.

All performances of the four selected shows will take place in the Vivia Locke Theatre of OSU’s Seretean Center for the Performing Arts.

Andrew Kimbrough, head of OSU’s Department of Theatre, said in an email initial plans for “The Birds,” the first show scheduled for this school year, were made in March, and the lighting and costume designs are taking shape.

Performances of “The Birds,” Conor McPherson’s thrilling dramatic work derived from the Alfred Hitchcock horror

movie that shares its title, are scheduled to run Oct. 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 8 at 2:30 p.m.

Kimbrough, who is directing “The Birds,” described the obstacles actors must overcome when they attempt to realistically portray their characters in this show.

“The challenge of ‘The Birds’ is that it’s firmly rooted in the realist tradition, and that’s actually very hard to pull off – to have student actors behaving in such a way that the audience believes from time to time they are watching real life,” Kimbrough said. “The play is dark and tense, so the actors have their work cut out for them.”

Soon after this production, the Department of Theatre will switch gears to focus on “The Comedy of Errors,” a humorous William Shakespeare piece that centers on two pairs of identical twins.

This show will run from Nov. 30 through Dec. 3.

After “The Comedy of Errors” performances, the next play is Paula Vogel’s “How I Learned to Drive,” a Pulitzer Prizewinning work that tackles heavy subject matter: the protagonist endures abuse from her uncle and other relatives. Performances of “How I Learned to Drive” will take place Feb. 22-24 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 25 at 2:30 p.m.

musical with an ironic plot twist. The two lead characters are coworkers who annoy each other but unknowingly develop a romantic relationship as anonymous pen pals. The musical, with a book by Joe Masteroff and music

by Jerry Bock, will run April 26-28 at 7:30 p.m. and April 28-29 at 2:30 p.m.

Because of the variety of shows, versatility is required for people involved in all dimensions of these theatrical productions. Kimbrough said the Department of Theatre doesn’t waste time transitioning from one show to the next.

“It’s a very fast process,” he said. “After the last performance of every production we do, we strike the set in its entirety and return all costumes to stock after they are cleaned.

The designs for the next show have already been completed, and in many instances we are building the next show before the previous one is done. So the costume lab might be working on two shows at once, and a new set might be started in the scene lab while another is being used on stage.”

As some OSU theater students will showcase their on-stage talents, others have opportunities to immerse themselves in behind-the-scenes design processes.

This school year, new faces will add to the collaborative group of individuals in the Department of Theatre. Kimbrough said 20 incoming students at OSU plan to major in theater, and several faculty members will begin their first year as OSU employees. Maggie Gayle is a visiting professor in scenography, and Renee Garcia will work in costume design.

lum that was launched a year ago “for students who wish to study dance not only as recreation, but as performing art,” according to the OSU Department of Theatre web site. Miller, OSU’s first faculty member to instruct dance full time, will offer new classes in her field of expertise.

Kimbrough said he looks forward to the 2017-18 season, when all the plans and designs will spring to life in the Vivia Locke Theatre. About 500 loyal OSU theater patrons buy season tickets every year. Kimbrough said the Department of Theatre strives to broaden the range of people who attend its productions, and he emphasized the

importance of ensuring every OSU student has access to these shows.

“As a way to introduce ourselves to students, we offer every new student a free ticket to see any show,” Kimbrough said.

“Information is on our website: theatre.okstate. edu. In addition, our student prices are lower than all others and we have no plans to raise them.

We are committed to all students benefiting from our productions.”

Despite the movies heavy influence from “Avatar” and past space movies, it was still enjoyable. This movie is not a must-see but may cater to a small group of people looking for a crazy intergalactic trip filled with peculiarities.
