A

ubrey McCutchan didn’t spend her winter break in Stillwater or her hometown of Collinsville. She spent it building a school and trekking Mount Everest in Nepal.

McCutchan and All Hands Volunteers, a disaster relief nonprofit, focused on humanitarian aid in the wake of the April 25, 2015, earthquake that left the country in shambles.

The organization previously brought McCutchan to the Philippines, a nation dealing with natural disaster damage. In both places, the organization and McCutchan rebuilt structures the disasters destroyed.

McCutchan, a civil engineering junior, said building a school in Nepal was a “perfect fit” for her.

“I like helping people, but this was a certain kind of helping people,” McCutchan said. “They just haven’t been getting exactly what they need, and spending your time with them helps build communities.”

McCutchan said the country’s progress after the 2015 earthquake has been slow.

“The government’s been given a lot of aid money, but it hasn’t been distributed to hardly anyone,” McCutchan said.

Some of the local masons helping with the school had received disaster relief help from All Hands when their houses were destroyed and went to help the organization to give back what they could.

She flew from the capital of Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, largely known as the most dangerous airport in the world because of its runway size and location.

“There are no roads leading to the airport, so everything you see up the mountain was flown in and carried by a person or a yak,” McCutchan said.

The trek group included McCutchan, seven Australians and a man from Texas. By the end of the trip, the man from Texas and an Australian man had to be flown down in helicopters because of altitude sickness.

“The altitude affected everyone differently,” McCutchan said. “When you feel a headache coming on, that can be the start. It can all go downhill from there.”

Mount Everest Base Camp, which is 17,600 feet in elevation, stays about 0 degrees with 53 percent oxygen of that at sea level.

“You just get really winded really fast,” McCutchan said.

The trek included eight days going up, two acclimatization days and three days coming down.

Other than the occasional rinse with a bucket, the only water available was in bottles, which had to be thick for the water to remain unfrozen.

“I didn’t take a shower for 11 days,” McCutchan said. “I was caked in dirt.”

Because of the risks of getting lost, tour guides were adamant about not letting anyone take shortcuts. The group witnessed a few avalanches as well.

“Our main guide, Dawa Sherpa, his son was supposedly a reincarnation,” McCutchan said. “So they sent him to a monastery up on the mountain.”

The 7-year-old had passed Buddhist tests that made people believe he could be the reincarnation of an important religious figure.

The boy blessed the trekkers by kissing their heads.

Tibetan prayer flags surrounded the trekkers at times, and Buddhist prayer wheels lined the mountain.

They are believed to be good luck if spun clockwise.

McCutchan said she would recommend the trip to anyone wanting to explore and do something new.

“In college, you learn a lot about diversity, but going abroad – that’s the real experience,” McCutchan said. “If you wanna do something like that, just make it happen.”

With 2:06 left in the third quarter of the Super Bowl, Brad Underwood turned the game off and went to sleep.

The Patriots had scored, but kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed the extrapoint attempt, and Underwood, Oklahoma State’s men’s basketball coach, thought it was over.

When Underwood stopped watching, the Falcons led 28-9, but the Patriots would come back to win 34-28.

Underwood said he woke up about 6:45 on Monday morning astonished.

He compared Atlanta’s collapse to a few collapses his teams have faced.

Last season, Underwood’s Stephen F. Austin team led Tulane by 26 with 6:15 left in the first half in the Challenge in Music City, a preseason tournament. SFA led Tulane for all but 16 seconds of the game, the last 16 seconds.

“I guess I don’t remember those (comebacks) as much as I remember the ones that tug at your emotions,” he said.

Underwood said he doesn’t look at this season like a comeback, but in many ways it has been.

After a strong start, the Cowboys (15-8 overall, 4-6 Big 12) lost six straight games to open conference play but have since won five straight, the longest win streak in the Big 12.

“Basketball’s a marathon, especially when it’s your first year when you’re

implementing changes,” Underwood said. “I don’t look at it as a comeback; I probably don’t think in those terms very much. It’s more growth. It’s more setting a standard. It’s more important than thinking like that.”

Dillard provides Cowboys with spark Davon Dillard has experienced the aforementioned growth.

Dillard played in only eight of the first 16 games of the season, and in those eight games, he averaged about six minutes on the floor.

Since, he has averaged about 15 minutes a game.

He also has been featured on SportsCenter’s top plays twice — earning the top play for a dunk in OSU’s 82-75 victory against West Virginia on Saturday, and he had the No. 3 play for a dunk against TCU on Jan. 23.

“I get mad at Davon all the time when he misses layups because he has that powerful and explosive body,” Underwood said. “He can go do that all the time.”

In OSU’s victory against the then-No. 7 Mountaineers, Dillard also took the first charge of his basketball career.

After he turned the ball over under OSU’s basket, Dillard thought quickly and drew a charge call on Lamont West, keeping the game tied at 64. After the play, WVU coach Bob Huggins fell to the floor in disbelief of the call and was given a technical.

“I’ve said it many times, he’s our most versatile player,” Underwood said.

Waters has shined in big moments, such as the OU game or his late 3 against WVU, which extended OSU’s lead to 74-69.

“Probably when I get a text from coach saying ‘Come talk to me,’ or something like that,” Waters said.

Oklahoma State University will host its sixth annual Cowboython on Saturday in the Colvin Annex.

Cowboython is an organization and fundraiser that raises money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Oklahoma, an affiliate of the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

The 12-hour dance party will last from 10 a.m.–10 p.m.

Colton Clark, Cowboython executive director, said the time and length of the event are symbolic.

“The 12 hours actually represents a nurse’s shift at the children’s hospital,” Clark said. “It’s a way for us to communicate the connection of the children’s hospital back to our event.

“We are really encouraging students to stay all day … to meet with these families, to see first-hand how they are making an impact.”

International students are preparing to showcase their respective countries.

Oklahoma State University’s International Student Organization will host its annual International Bazaar at 11 a.m. Saturday.

ISO has hosted the bazaar every spring semester for more than two decades, ISO Adviser Tim Huff said.

“The International Bazaar allows our international students to prepare

authentic food from their respective cultures and present it to the Stillwater campus and community,” Huff said.

ISO President Raghav Nargotra, from India, said international students will enjoy the opportunity to share their culture and cuisines with OSU students.

“As they say, food brings people together,” Nargotra said. “(The International Bazaar) is a great opportunity for the native students and local community to learn and taste international cuisines

ISO has an American liaison, Areanna Handy, whose function in the club

is to coordinate between ISO and Greek Organizations, Student Union Activities Board and Office of Multicultural Affairs so events reach as many people as possible. “(The International Bazaar) is a great way to venture out and experience a different culture through tasting dishes from our international students’ home countries, as well as getting to see different cultural dress and interact with our international students,” Handy said.

ISO represents more

than 1,700 international students from more than 100 countries, according to its website. Nineteen of these countries’ clubs and student organizations are expected to participate Saturday, including the Indian Student Association, African Student Organization and Ethiopian Students Association, among others.

“The International Bazaar gives the international students a sense of pride and belonging while it gives American students the opportunity to experi-

ence the outside world without ever leaving the OSU campus,” Huff said.

Saturday’s International Bazaar will be in the Wes Watkins Center Exhibit Hall. Admission is free, but cost will vary with different dishes. Students can purchase food with cash or bursar.
