Gajewski, Cowgirls enter season with high expectations OUTFIELD M ason Harb ou r S taff R epo rt er @ h arb our m as on

Coach Kenny Gajewski has instilled a winning mentality in his program.

In the four seasons prior to Gajewski’s hiring, the Oklahoma State softball program had begun to fall off, with three losing seasons and a combined record of 102-111.

However, in the four seasons since Gajewski took over, the Cowgirls have improved their record every year, culminating in their first Women’s College World Series trip in eight years in 2019 with a record of 45-17. This year, OSU has its highest preseason ranking under Gajewski at No. 13.

Gajewski said it’s business as usual for his team and that he expects the program to be contending for a world series every year.

“I just keep reminding them that last year is completely done with,” Gajewski said. “Last year got us back on track of where I expect to be here… I don’t think there’s any reason why we can’t attract top talent, and with our staff and resources, we should be in that mix each year.”

Last season, Gajewski brought in a host of transfers including Samantha Show, who led the Cowgirls to OKC. This year is no different as Carrie Eberle, Hayley Busby and Alysen Febrey have transferred in to play for Gajewski.

Febrey will likely play a large role for OSU, as Gajewski said the Georgia transfer has emerged as one of the team’s leaders through fall ball. Febrey hit .314 last season and could start the season as the leadoff hitter, in addition to replacing Show at first base.

“Febrey is the one that sticks out the very most on the diamond,” Gajewski said. “She’s been in the world series with Georgia.

She’s played in the SEC, so she’s truly tested…

This schedule won’t faze her, and she doesn’t smile a whole lot. She’s very business-like when she goes to the plate.”

In addition to the players transferring in, Gajewski has also brought over former Tulsa coach John Bargfeldt, who spent the past 14 seasons with TU. He has worked mainly with the pitchers during the off-season and Gajewski said Bargfeldt has been nothing short of spectacular so far.

“His softball mind is crazy. It’s unreal,” Gajewski said, “As a young, inexperienced head coach in only my fifth year, he brings me another sense of calmness, maturity and he brings experience.”

In order to earn a trip back to Oklahoma City, the Cowgirls will have to maneuver their way through a brutal schedule.

Of their 56 scheduled games, 19 are against ranked opponents, including the US national team.

doesn’t like the schedule, but will appreciate it later in the season.

“It’s a lot to handle with some new kids, but heck, you might as well go and see what you can do,” Gajewski said, “You find out right away who’s got that look in their eye and who doesn’t, I’d rather find that out now than in OKC.” The Cowgirls were picked to finish third in the conference after finishing in second last season. If Gajewski and OSU want to win the Big 12 for the first time in his tenure, they will have to get over the hump that is Oklahoma. As a coach, Gajewski is 0-14 against his alma mater, but he said he has to make sure his team isn’t too worried about OU. “I have a unique perspective because of my background on them (OU) and what they do,” Gajewski said, “I don’t put more stock into OU and I know that’s hard for our fans because they do and it’s important, but I just put stock in us being an elite program.”

Along with a strong pitching staff, the Cowgirls are focusing on providing better at bats throughout their lineup.

Gajewski said he often doesn’t care about strikeouts, but when the coaching staff went back and looked at some of the top teams, he said they’ve started working on eliminating non-competitive at bats.

While the lineup is

somewhat of a work in progress, Gajewski said he has several different lineups he can go with, depending on who is playing well in other areas.

“We can put a lineup in there with a lot of speed, we can put a lineup in there with a lot of power,” Gajewski said, “The lineup is what it is now, but we don’t play for ten days… There’s a lot to be had, there’s a lot of spots out there open.”

The expectations have certainly been raised, but Gajewski said he thinks this is the most talented team he’s had at OSU, and that they could make another WCWS run in June.

“We’ve got a lot of kids back and we’ve got a lot of newcomers…

I’ve really seen a change in the way they’ve come together,” Gajewski said, “This team can be as good as they want to be. To be honest, it’s kind of in their shoes now.”

Hayley Busby has been an infielder her entire career, but a couple weeks ago, coach Kenny Gajewski wanted to give her a look in the outfield.

The No. 13 Oklahoma State softball team have a hole to replace after Rylee Bayless, last year’s starting right fielder and lead-off hitter, graduated after last season. The Cowgirls need someone to fill that void.

Gajewski was impressed with what he saw from Busby. Along with being the best right-handed hitter on the team, he said she has good movement skills, a strong arm and high softball IQ. She batted .388 last season at Virginia, and her settling in in the outfield will open up the DP spot for another player to take.

The Cowgirls have established players returning to fill the other outfield spots.

Center fielder Cheyanne Factor made a quick first impression in her first season, making the All-Big 12 Freshman Team. She made a couple of defensive highlight plays in addition to her consistent offensive contributions.

She finished fourth on the team in hits, home runs and RBIs. Michaela Richbourg will likely slide into the other outfield spot.

She packs a punch at the plate, finishing second on the team last season with 14 home runs as a sophomore.

Chelsea Alexander also returns for OSU and is another option in the outfield.

Exclusively a pinch runner when she first arrived in Stillwater, Alexander has thrived in her outfield role.

Her speed allows her to cover a lot of ground, both defensively and when running the bases. Offensively, she doesn’t have a lot of power, but is a solid hitter to have round out the batting order.

Last season, Samantha Show transferred to Oklahoma State and stole the show both in the circle and at the plate.

However, with Show now on the coaching staff, coach Kenny Gajewski brought in Virginia Tech transfer Carrie Eberle to fill the void left by Show. Eberle doesn’t quite bring the same presence at the plate, but she is arguably a better pitcher in the circle and could anchor an improved pitching staff.

Eberle was the ACC Pitcher of the Year in 2019, with an ERA of 1.84 in 201.1 innings “She’s been as advertised, and she’s been really good” Gajewski said, “She’s just constantly in search of getting better, and I think that’s what coach John (Bargfeldt) is really seeing, too, is just she’s not afraid to learn and grow.”

While Eberle is probably going to be the No. 1 starter, Gajewski said he was just as impressed with freshman Kelly Maxwell, who was an Under Armour AllAmerican in high school but redshirted last season.

“I think she’s pitched as

good as Carrie has all fall up to right now,” Gajewski said, “We’ve got quite a battle going with those two, you know Kelly has been striking kids out like we haven’t had here in my time.”

One of two returning Cowgirl pitchers from last season is Logan Simunek.

She pitched well last season, mainly in relief, sporting a 3.42 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 84 innings.

Simunek is not only one of the most experienced pitchers on the roster, but is also one of the only four-year seniors on OSU’s roster. Simunek said her game has grown tremen-

dously in her four years and is proud of the strides the program has made since her freshman year.

“My freshman year we were just here, and if we won it was like ‘great job, we won’,” Simunek said, “And now, in my senior year, we know we’re going to win, and we expect to win, and that’s all we’re going to do is win.”

Along with Simunek, Gabby Sprang returns to the Cowgirls. Sprang is a former transfer herself, coming in from Tennessee before last season and was ranked as the top overall pitcher in her recruiting class in 2017.

Last season, she pitched

31.1 innings and had a 3.57 ERA, but has been hurt for most of the offseason, so it remains to be seen if she will be ready to play when the season starts. Sprang is a valuable relief pitcher for the Cowgirls when healthy, as she 15 strikeouts in 31.1 inings.

The only other who may see playing time this season is Mattison Boyd. While she is just a freshman, coach Gajewski said she shows potential, but has been erratic at times during the fall.

It is unlikely that Boyd will see much playing time behind the four other pitchers, but she could see a few innings this season if

she can reign in the control issues.

Following a 2019 season that saw Show pitch most of the big innings, Gajewski will have three legitimate starters and an ace in Eberle, who will try to lead the Cowgirls back to the Women’s College World Series in June.

“I’m very pleased with this group,” Gajewski said, “They seem to be very close; they’ve really bought into John (Bargfeldt) from day one, and everything he’s talked with them about. I’ve seen growth and that’s what it’s all about.” adam luther/0colly

Replacing his best infield might be difficult for coach Kenny Gajewski, but in his mind, they have just what it takes.

As the No. 13 OSU softball team gears up for its fifth season coached by Gajewski, its infield has a large task in front of it - replacing the 123 hits, 28 doubles, 26 home runs and 103 RBIs that former Cowgirls Madi Sue Montgomery and Samantha Show produced last

season, leading OSU to its first Women’s College World series in eight years.

The two players Gajewski has tasked with filling the void of the pair of program legends are freshman Karli Petty at second base and senior transfer from Georgia Alysen Febrey at first base.

Replacing Montgomery won’t be easy.

She is arguably the greatest softball player to ever don the Cowgirl uniform and holds program records for games played, games started and RBIs and ranks highly in countless other categories.

Petty, a freshman, not only has big shoes to fill but has no college experience to lean on. Luckily for her, Gajewski has referred to her as the most talented player on his team, and with Montgomery back on the Cowgirls’ staff to guide her, she has everything it takes to be the everyday starter.

Febrey is a different story from Petty, but an eerily similar one to Show. Febrey came to Stillwater as a transfer for her final season just as Show did just 12 months ago.

It will not be the longstanding impact that Febrey

will have to replace but the single season impact Show made, setting the school record with 20 home runs.

Febrey was a three-year starter at UGA totalling 21 home runs and a batting average of .332 during her time in Athens, Georgia.

On the other side of the diamond is a familiar pair of faces for OSU fans with Kiley Naomi at shortstop and Sydney Pennington at third base.

Naomi had two different sides to her first season as a Cowgirl. She showed elite level athleticism on the bases and in the field.

She constantly pulled off jaw-dropping plays at short and, along with double-play partner Montgomery, made turning-two routine for the Cowgirls.

On the other hand, she had her struggles at the plate. Naomi hit .258/.378/.442 with six home runs and 18 RBIs showing an ability to get on base and utilize her top-end speed.

Next to her is the girl she supplanted at short in Pennington. The third baseman is entering her junior season and is coming off a year that had its growing pains.

Along with the transition to a new position at the hot corner, Pennington had her own struggles with the bat in her hand. She started the season 6-for-46 for a batting average of .130 in February, but that’s when things changed. Pennington finished the season hitting .270 and totaled 10 home runs and 33 RBIs. With Show and Montgomery gone, this group has high expectations, but with the strong mix of new and old faces, they should have what it takes to get the Cowgirls to where they want to be - in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma Supreme Court prevents Initiative Petition 420 from advancing Ale x Sloan P o l i tics R ep orter @ sloan _al ex

The Oklahoma Supreme Court invalidated Initiative Petition 420 on Tuesday.

Initiative Petition 420 would reform Oklahoma’s legislative redistricting process by establishing an independent commission responsible for redrawing legislative district boundaries. Currently, the legislators themselves are responsible for this process.

While the petition was invalidated as written, proponents of the measure will have the opportunity to change the gist and file the measure as a new petition initiative.

Andy Moore, executive director of People not Politicians, said the petition has already been revised and is ready to file again.

“We were going to refile today, but the secretary of State’s office is closed, so we will be there tomorrow,” Moore said Wednesday.

House Speaker Charles McCall (R-Atoka) issued a statement Tuesday in response to the ruling.

“This proposal has been misleading and overlycomplicated from day one, and we are pleased the court recognized that by striking it down,” McCall said.

“We are continuing to move forward with the House’s proven redistricting process that involves the entire state, strictly adheres to the law and won bipartisan praise when last used a decade ago.”

Oral arguments regarding the petition took place in a single day, but the court considered two cases challenging the proposal.

The first (case number 118405) questioned the measure’s legality in regards to the First Amendment and Oklahoma’s single subject rule. In this case, the court determined in an 8-0 decision the petition did not violate the state’s single subject rule and declined to rule on any potential First Amendment violations.

“That’s good news,” Moore said. “I think that signifies that the court recognizes that this is a valid, reasonable petition.”

The ruling in the second case (case number 118406) struck the petition from the ballot. This case focused on the adequacy of the petition’s gist.

The gist of a petition is the summary text at the top of the signature page, meant to ensure voters are informed about petitions they may be asked to sign. The court ruled 7-2 against the gist as it was written and ultimately released four opinions detailing why the gist was inadequate.

To complicate matters, formatting requirements for Oklahoma initiative petitions leaves a limited amount of space in which to write a petition’s gist. Moore said summarizing the lengthy petition in the space provided for the gist was challenging.

“We looked at the court’s guidance on that and tried to do our best to include all the aspects that they felt we needed to include and just try to explain the process a little bit better,” Moore said.

“I feel like we have done a really excellent job of fulfilling everything the court has asked and addressing the concerns from the opposition as well.”

Once the petition has been filed again, opponents of the measure will have another opportunity to challenge its legality.

“The politicians’ goal is to try to keep us off of the ballot this year, and so they’re going to do everything they can to try to make that happen,” Moore said.

“We are confident that we can get there, the only thing that stands in our way is the politicians who are trying to keep their power to gerrymander one more time.”

Opera students have been studiously rehearsing and preparing in the depths of the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts for their shows “Down in the Valley” and “Speed Dating Tonight” scheduled to premiere on Friday and Saturday.

OSU has a history of hosting plays and musicals, but few operas; the opera is a different medium of expression. Vocal performance graduate Matthew McKinnon got into opera late in his college career.

“I’ve always loved singing,” McKinnon said. “My voice feature really pushed me to do opera. This is actually my first opera. I didn’t do opera in undergrad, so this is kind of a new opportunity.”

Opera is not as popular as mainstream music. From the singing to the storytelling, Martha Beaty, a vocal music education major, understands why some students might be uninterested in the genre.

“I think the stories in operas can be harder for people to get into,” Beaty said. “Most operas are not as current as current musicals. When a big musical comes out, there’s a lot of press about it. Operas can seem outdated and sort of old. Lots of people don’t think they’ll be interested.

of really cool storylines in operas, and you don’t necessarily need to understand the words that people are saying.”

The opera offers something different from typical shows. It features a different style of singing not shown in musicals or typical concerts. The different style of singing means pushing the performance, and vocal performance student Kennedy Conrad agrees.

“I think the opera is definitely just something to take you out of your norm,” Conrad said. “Being a college student is just so stressful. Just spending a night being totally at the whim of the actors on stage and being taken out of Stillwater, really, and just into this new place and this new story is just something people should really enjoy.”

The students starring in the opera have a passion for the art, and many of them have career goals within this sphere.

“I’ve been singing for a long time, but I’ve never done an opera,” Beaty said.

“Being here at OSU, I went to see opera performances last year, and I was really interested in doing something like that because being a vocal student, we get a lot of opportunities to do choral music, but it’s very different from singing operatically.”

The performers and stage producers, like vocal education student Amanda Barber, have been rehearsing for weeks putting together a show, and they hope for a large crowd on both nights of their performance.

“People should come to the opera because the operas that we’re doing are very accessible,” Barber said. “I think people will be surprised at how it’s an opera. It’s not boring. I think people perceive operas as being boring because either they’re not in English, or they’re just old. But I find beauty in how time passes.” ”Down in the Valley” and ”Speed Dating Tonight” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evening at the McKnight Center for Performing Arts.
