LOOKING AHEAD! (Part 4) “For our light affliction, which but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things that are seen, but the things which are not seen. For the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” (2 Co.4:17-18 NKJ) It is so easy to be engrossed in the momentary, especially if it is difficult, challenging or very glamorous. They often grab and hold our undivided attention; even leading us away from the worthwhile things that God offers.

Things seem overwhelming to us.

Yet, the apostle calls them light afflictions, and they are short lived.

He compares them to the great eternal work God is doing in and through us.

They are so tiny compared to the Glory of God’s eternal kingdom, that is yet to be revealed in its fullness: they are so small.

things and keep a proper perspective?

The big keys are fellowship, prayer and the scriptures. It is so important to take time to fellowship with God through consistent times of prayer, worship and the Bible. You see this in the life of Jesus and the early church. Setting aside a daily time with Christ, gives Him opportunity to reveal and remind us of the valuable things of life. Fellowship with others, who desire to know and walk with God, can also be very enlightening and encouraging.

(Heb.10:25) Seeing the Unseen! This is a continual challenge in a world that is constantly emphasizing the things that are temporary in value and existence. I have found a consistent “quiet time” with Lord Jesus Christ; a quiet time of Praise, prayer and scripture, a necessity to steady me in my Christian life, and reminded me of the unseen, eternal things of God. Hall of Fame Career: Book Trader closing after operating for over 20 years Twitter Reactions:

A Stillwater staple is saying goodbye.

Hall of Fame Book Trader, which is located at 120 W. Hall of Fame Ave., is permanently closing after operating for over 20 years. This store was known for selling new and used textbooks, allowing students to sell back their textbooks and having the latest Oklahoma State/Stillwater High School spirit wear.

Jeff Nett, the owner of Hall of Fame Book Trader since its conception, said his store is closing because it’s getting more difficult to sell textbooks.

“They don’t really use any textbooks anymore,” Nett said.

When a small business like this ceases operations, many people attribute it to big corporations such as Amazon or Walmart. Nett said while those companies played a small role in his stores closing, it was the convenience of bursar and textbook codes that had the biggest factor.

“Although Amazon has played a factor, it’s the all inclusive that has killed us,” Nett said. “There is no freshman books, they don’t have to buy any books at all anymore. It’s all just charged to their bursar account, they get a code and they have access.”

the store will officially close in about three or four weeks. Until that day comes, the store is selling everything at 40 percent off in an attempt to clear everything out.

Throughout Hall of Fame Book Trader’s long run, it grew to local prominence thanks to its proximity to campus and prime location on one of Stillwater’s busiest streets.

Some Stillwater residents, including OSU freshman Brodie Myers, can’t believe they won’t see this store on Hall of Fame Avenue anymore.

“As a lifelong Stillweigan I absolutely hate to see it go,” Myers said

While some people are sad to see the store leave, others are happy that online textbooks are becoming the new norm.

According to a study from Investopedia, online textbooks are often times 60 percent cheaper than their print equivalent.

One Twitter user, Josh Oliver, said he’s glad Hall of Fame Book Trader is gone because their prices became too high.

“Really going to miss [Hall of Fame Book Trader] ripping me off,” Oliver said in a tweet.

“Truly hate paying the reasonable prices the internet has brought me.”

While this new phase of online textbooks may have ended this business, the Nett family still plans to stick with its roots. Nett said his family doesn’t know what their next business ventures will be, but they’re definitely staying in Stillwater.

“We’ve got some ideas, but no plans,” Nett said.

“Nothing that’s really stuck yet. I’ve lived in [Stillwater] forever. I came here for college in 1980 and I’ve been here since; so no, we won’t be leaving.”

1) Check out local thrift stores or antique malls.

Thrift stores and most antique malls are affordable and are home to one of a kind pieces. Look for pieces that will stand out, and don’t be scared to purchase a piece that is bright or patterned. Unique treasures are

great conversation pieces for friends and family to talk about when visiting. The items found at antique stores will make any apartment stand out and have friends wanting to know where it came from. Garage sales are also a great place to look for uncommon gems. This is also economically beneficial, going to thrift stores or antique malls gives old pieces a new life.

2) New decorates are available at chain stores If second hand isn’t your jam , businesses like 5 Below, Big Lots and Walmart have great home décor options that are affordable.

Tapestries, lamps, rugs and twinkle lights are just a few

of the many things found at these businesses to vamp up a new apartment. Tapestries are affordable and take up a lot of wall space, so there will not be a need to buy multiple wall hangings.

Twinkle lights are a great alternative to lamps because they do not take up any table space and add more to the wall being decorated.

3) Visit Lowes or local garden shops to find plants and decorative pots Succulents and cacti are great indoor plants and are perfect for sitting on end tables and window ledges.

Succulents and cacti require little care and are easy to take care of. Small plants are a perfect touch for a new

apartment, especially if they are planted in a decorative pot. When looking for decorative pots, pick one color that will tie in with the rest of the colors, specifically a color that is not being seen a lot in the other pieces. Decorating with plants is also inexpensive and will bring life to a new apartment.

4) DIY Another way to decorate a new apartment on a budget is to do DIY projects.

Pinterest is the holy grail for DIY ideas, and most of them are easy to do and require basic crafting supplies.

A common thought among students might be that their vote won’t count, but in Payne County and other parts of Oklahoma, that is just false.

According to Forbes, the voter rate among college students more than doubled from 2014-2018, (19% to 40%).

On Wednesday, the Oklahoma State Students for Bernie club will set up table outside of the Student Union to campaign for their candidate and register as many people to vote as

possible.

JD Barnes, the club president, said not only is it important for young people to start expressing themselves more in the ballot box, but young people are also highly underrepresented by the current governing and political institutions as an interest group.

“We have a lot of specific issues and needs that need to be addressed, as a block, student debt is a massive issue,” Barnes said. “It’s going to hold people down from participating as fully in the economy as we want them to.”

“If you’re a democrat or independent in Oklahoma, our primaries are, in many ways, the greatest expression of whatever it is that you think,” Barnes said.

Luke McIntyre, a junior marketing major, said he’s registered to vote in Texas but doesn’t know if voting matters as much in Oklahoma.

“I think Texas is starting

to be a little more even than Oklahoma, but in Oklahoma, probably not so much,” McIntyre said.

Luke’s friend and classmate Brandon Brewster* is also registered to vote in Texas. Brewster had a different take on voting and its importance in Oklahoma.

“I mean I feel like if you have something to say and you feel like you’re just wanting to be heard, then definitely register to vote, you never know which way it will sway.”

Freshman Maya Gould is registered to vote in Tulsa.

“Voting is a lot of people’s only chance to reassure their voice is heard,”

The night began with beer, middle fingers, rooster tattoos and even more beer.

As the temperature dropped to below freezing outside, the heat began to rise inside Tumbleweed Dance Hall once Giovannie and the Hired Guns started their set. They were opening for Kody West. Giovannie got the crowd energized with his hit song “Rooster Tattoo.”

Giovannie and the Hired Guns have a large following in their own right.

With over 60,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, the young stars are from right outside of Dallas have a bright future in the industry, and they’re keeping busy. Giovannie are getting ready to go on a two-month nation-wide tour. They’ll be hitting Yukon and Ardmore on Feb. 14 and 15 and rounding their tour out at Calffry in Stillwater this May. As an invigorated crowd gave the opening performance a standing ovation, the anticipation in the room only continued to grow. As folks attending the concert started to become noticeably drunk and dizzy, West and his band began setting up their equipment on stage. Only minutes away from the show starting, people began flooding the stage, leaving every crevasse of Tumbleweed not in Claire Boomer/O’Colly the band vicinity empty.

five unreleased tracks from their upcoming album “Overgrown.” They began with the title track from their 2017 album “Green” and ended with their most listened to song off the same album, “Million Miles.” The band also played what West said was his favorite song to perform right now, a cover of “Wish You Were Here,” by “Incubus.”

As the concert persisted, some of the crowd slowly began migrating to the dance floor, others more rapidly to the nearest trash can. Although alcohol has a reputation of slurring speech, a couple of concert goers were willing to talk to give their opinions on Kody West and why they decided to come out to Tumbleweed.

Josh Edmundsberger, a musician from Cushing, said he was really excited when he heard that Kody West and Giovannie and the Hired Guns would be coming to town and couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

“I’m here to see Kody West and Giovannie and the Hired Guns, two guys I’ve never seen before, couple of bad-ass guys.”

Tyler Miller, an agricultural communications senior, explained that he was not only at the concert to see Kody West, but also to expand on experiences he has through the help of Tumbleweed. Miller explained that he helped coordinate all social media platforms for “Calffry” in 2019, and how that experience has helped him.

“I learned how to do a lot, I was working with pretty much everything Adobe Sweeps, I got a lot of experience with it,” Miller said, “The guys here at the Tumbleweed are really, really awesome, you know; they facilitate all your needs.”

The Tumbleweed is a country music institution for Stillwater. Bands like West’s like to perform there because of the atmosphere.

“I love Stillwater, it’s that college environment of Oklahoma that we get to experience, we have that in Texas obviously but in Oklahoma, for us, it’s a new kinda territory.” West said, “We’ve played in different places in Oklahoma but now we’re starting to get up to the college markets.”

West has many different influences in his music, and it would be short-sighted to label him as just one of them. Although Kody West falls under the country category, there is much more to their band than just that. Alternative rock has also had a big impact on the group.

“We all kind of grew up in the same generation, so we have a lot of that 2000’s alt rock in us.” West said.

“Right now, I am playing music that I love playing, and that’s most satisfying, it makes soundcheck fun, it makes playing shows fun, I love what I do.”

West and the band are headed home to Dallas until Feb. 5 when they will be kicking off their tour in St. Louis.

When moving into an apartment for the first time, it can be intimidating to suddenly have to handle having a landlord.

Here are some tips in how to deal with your landlord: Make sure you meet them ahead of time: Not knowing your landlord or meeting them ahead of time can cause confusion and you won’t really know them enough to be comfortable with them. Meet with them before you start renting so get an idea what they are like.

Bug them until they

fix the problem: Sometimes landlords forget about the problems going on in your house (especially if they are the landlord to other houses) so make sure you text, call or email them until someone comes to fix it.

Pay everything on time: There is nothing worse than missing a bill date.

Make sure to pay all of your bills on time so you don’t have to pay the late fee. Make sure in your renter’s contract that if you do owe a late fee the landlord has to tell you that month, not wait for several months to tell you that you are late.

Read your contract

thoroughly: Be confident in knowing what your contract says and if you do not agree with something make sure you tell your landlord before signing.

Try to save it in a file on your desktop because it is always great to have ready.

Make your landlord tell you a head of time before they come over: This again goes with checking the contract.

Some landlords will enter your house without telling you ahead of time, which can be uncomfortable for tenants. Just double check or talk with your landlord and ask for notice before they come in.

A crowd gathered at Eskimo Joe’s Saturday morning to participate in the Polar Plunge, a fundraising event for Special Olympics.

Students from the Greek community, law enforcement and Special Olympics lined up to jump into a pool of 42 degree water. Sponsors donated money for each person who made the leap.

Agricultural communication freshman Grant McClure joined about 20 of his Alpha Gamma Rho brothers in leaping from a trailer into a stand-up pool with the promise of $75 per student being donated to the charity.

“We had a guy who is

kind of our… one of our upperclassmen, and he’s the social chairman and he does a lot of like community service stuff,” McClure said. “He sent out like a memo about it and we decided to go do it.”

While this was a new experience for McClure and his group, the Stillwater Multi-jurisdictional Special Operations Team have regularly supported the special Olympics.

One member was glad to be back after an absence last year. His team came prepared to participate but also to give a special donation.

“We had actually raised money in a golf tournament last year,” Brett Moore, one of the team leaders, said. “So we’re here to make a pretty good contribution from the proceedings we won.”

One of their team members was in costume the entire time, along with many of the other attendees. From one team dressed as unicorns to a member of Alpha Gamma Rho donning only a speedo, the event was a festive display.

The fundraiser offers fun and a chance to help a good cause. June Fitch and Christina Collins organized the event, which has been going on for well over 16 years. At last year’s Polar Plunge, they reached their $20,000 goal. However, they are always looking for donations and volunteers for The Special Olympics.

When asked to describe the Polar Plunge, Collins looked out over the crowd and said two words.
