Graham Winslow almost never took his first breath on his own.

His life was a coin flip. At 18 weeks of her pregnancy, Dayle Winslow, Graham’s mother, and his father, Zade, went in for an ultrasound.

The family found out Graham was a boy, but they also found out Graham was not a normal baby boy.

Graham, 4, was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia, a birth

defect with a 50-percent mortality rate. Graham’s diaphragm never fully formed, causing all of his vital organs to get pushed up into his chest cavity, and his lungs were unable to grow.

Dayle said she remembers thinking about how the doctor mentioned every important organ except the brain and said she realized this was a big deal.

On Nov. 25, 2014, Graham was born via cesarean section and was immediately intubated.

Because of his condition, Graham was unable to breathe on his own.

Then two days later on Thanksgiving Day, three specialists came out to the waiting room, where Graham’s family had been waiting for days to see if he’d make it.

The specialists told Graham’s family he was stable enough to be placed in an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, or ECMO, and would soon undergo lifesaving surgery to fix the defect he was born with.

Diane Elder, Graham’s grandmother, said it was nothing short of a miracle.

Dr. Bob Letton at OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City walked out of the operating room after performing Graham’s lifesaving surgery for hours. Dayle and her father said they still remember and talk about how exhausted Letton looked as he came out of the surgery.

Letton and Dr. Phillip Mantor were the main doctors who helped with Graham’s treatment, and Dayle said she will be forever grateful to the two men who saved her STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 3

Graham received treatment for 109 days at OU Children’s before he was released. He was fed via feeding tube for the first nine months of his life.

Today, Graham runs, laughs, climbs and cracks jokes.

Seeing Graham’s journey, from not being able to breathe on his own to now, has been special, Zade Winslow said.

One of Graham’s favorite things to do is ride in Zade Winslow’s golf cart and go over large hills. Zade said he is always surprised how fearless Graham is and how much he loves thrill-seeking.

Along with riding on

a four-wheeler as his grandfather and father go duck hunting, Graham loves completing puzzles, jumping on inflatable bounce houses and watching TV. Graham quotes “Toy Story,” and his favorite song right now is Montell Jordan’s “This is How We Do It.” “It’s been awesome watching him grow,” Zade Winslow said.

“From where he started to where he is now, it’s been miraculous. It’s truly a blessing seeing him take on life.”

For Graham and his family, this year’s CowboyThon was the second year they were honored and celebrated as a miracle family.

Graham’s older sister, Finley, was 3 when Graham was born. Finley and Graham are the closest of friends, Dayle said.

Dayle is pregnant with her third child and said she’s excited to see Graham take on the role of big brother once the baby is born.

Graham lives with a Gore-Tex patch that acts as his diaphragm.

known, and as his organs continue to grow, there could be more obstacles in his journey. As for now, he smiles and plays like a normal kid, thanks to several lifesaving surgeries and miracles along the way.

Zade said he and his family continue to cherish every day.

“You don’t know,” he said. “Tomorrow is never guaranteed. That’s why we put that much more emphasis on cherishing those moments that come about.”

To many people at the seventh annual CowboyThon, it was not only about raising money.

The event’s acronym displayed its motto, which every participant took to heart.

Three letters, FTK, were plastered throughout Colvin Annex for this year’s CowboyThon on Saturday.

The acronym stands for “For the Kids,” and it meant much more to many of the participants.

CowboyThon is Oklahoma State’s largest philanthropy event. Dozens of OSU’s student organizations, including

Throughout the day, dancing, games and many smiling faces gathered in Colvin Annex.

Most notably, the center of CowboyThon was a 12-hour dance marathon. The marathon featured Whitney Houston’s hit song “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” on repeat at the top of every hour.

Hall said CowboyThon takes many days of preparation, but it’s worth it in the end.

As children and their families, referred to as “miracle families,” walked into Colvin Annex, they were bombarded with cheers from OSU students.

Christine Kaiser is a dance marathon manager for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Kaiser goes across the country to different dance marathons more than 300 universities host.

For Kaiser, FTK is about seeing the children’s smiling faces. “(FTK) is a short, impactful slogan,” Kaiser said. “It just

goes back to the fact that we’re not focused on dollars.”

More than a dozen staff orchestrated the event with activities including painting, obstacle courses, video games and many more.

“We’re focused on these kids,” Kaiser said. “(We’re focused on) ensuring that they have the best possible experience, that their families have the best possible experience and, ultimately, when looking at the funds raised, they’re receiving the best possible care.”

The event is free and open to the public.

Vice Chair of Senate Marcus Heald said SGA hopes this event will create an atmosphere where students can be each other’s support system.

Senate Chair of SGA Brook Bastie said QPR training teaches others how to know when to send them to training but also make them know you are still there to be their support system.

SGA’s special committee on mental health will pair with University Counseling Services to put on the event.

“It’s OK to know how to refer someone to the right people,” Holland Gray, Internal Affairs Committee Chair of SGA, said.

The event will be modeled after a QPR training but will not officially certify participants because of class size limitations. Since an official QPR training can hold up to only 25 participants, SGA will utilize counseling services to apply the material to a bigger audience.

Gray said SGA is focused on making it both a conversation and a training.

There will be a panel available after the presentation that will include faculty, counselors and Gray.

“We want people to understand and know the signs and also be aware of the mental illnesses that are on our campus as well as elsewhere,”

Gray said. “A lot of people at Oklahoma State are unaware that there is an actual issue with our students.”

Gray said SGA encourages everyone in the community who has an interest to go.

“Those who have not experienced some form of mental health should be even more obligated to go to this because they should be knowledgeable about what is happening,” Gray said.

OSU pitching staff holds lead in win against Marist With the bases loaded and no one out, Rob Walton slowly walked out to the pitcher’s mound.

The Oklahoma State baseball team held an early lead against Marist in the top of the second inning Sunday afternoon, a game it eventually won 3-2.

Left-handed pitcher Mitchell Stone stood on the mound awaiting Walton, OSU’s pitching coach, to get there from the Cowboys’ dugout.

The Cowboys were in a jam, leading 2-0.

“He kinda got in my grill a little bit and told me to compete a little better,” Stone said.

“I made an adjustment and was able to get out of the jam.”

Stone struck out three batters in a row to escape the situation without giving up any Marist runs, and strand the three runners on base.

“I just competed and did my best, threw my best pitches and just trusted myself,” Stone said.

“Got it done.”

Stone wasn’t the only Cowboy pitcher to throw his way out of a tough situation.

Right-hander Ben Leeper walked two straight batters to begin the seventh inning, and once again, Walton exited the dugout and headed for the pitcher’s mound.

Sunday was Leeper’s first appearance at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in more than a year after he underwent Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his elbow.

The Cowboys led by only one run at that point, and

Marist (0-5) was knocking on the door with a runner in scoring position.

After throwing out a bunting batter, Leeper intentionally walked another to load the bases with one out.

He then struck out one batter and forced a pop fly from another into Jon Littell’s glove in left field to once again strand three runners on base without any repercussions on the scoreboard.

“Ben’s had to be resilient,” Holliday said. “He’s had his elbow reconstructed on two different occasions, and that’s not easy.”

One more OSU pitcher would throw his way out of a jam, though, this time the runners were inherited, rather than him allowing them on base.

In the top of the eighth, right-hander Carson Teel took over pitching duties with the bases loaded and two outs.

Teel forced a groundout and kept OSU’s lead intact.

“We don’t want to put ourselves in that situation really ever again,” Holliday said.

“When you have the chance to expand on leads, you’ve got to do that. You can’t bank on your pitchers coming in and making critical pitches and winning every single one of those swing battles there where it could’ve gone in any direction.

“We’re probably fortunate in many ways to have won this game considering how many times our pitchers pitched out of jams.”

The difference on the scoreboard, really, came from Jon Littell’s home run.

The homer was his first of the season. He said he hasn’t really gotten into a groove yet, but Sunday’s homer should help him moving forward. “(Coach told me) to just stay with it, man,” Littell said. “It’ll come and just keep swinging.

It’ll all work out.”

Littell’s solo shot came in the first inning following a Colin Simpson RBI to push OSU to a 2-0 lead, and the Cowboys never looked back.

“We started off really good on offense,” Holliday said. “I thought we were aggressive out of the shoot and hitting some balls hard.

“I liked the different contributions we got from different players.”

Sunday’s narrow victory allowed OSU (4-1) to sweep Marist in the two-game weekend series.

“It’s always good to win close games,” Holliday said.

“Even better to win them at home.”
