eing on “The Voice” was never in Jordy Searcy’s plan.

Searcy recalls the day he got the phone call inviting him to be on NBC’s reality singing competition show in 2014. About three years later, he has an EP on the way while performing on tour, stopping in Stillwater to do a show at Oklahoma State University.

Searcy will take the stage at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Student Union Theater. He will be the first performer in the Student Union Activities Board’s Spring Coffeehouse Series.

Searcy’s journey began with the phone call. Producers of “The Voice” offered the Alabama native an invitation to audition for the show after seeing a YouTube video of him singing.

“I wasn’t super prepared,” Searcy said. “I just came and sang a few songs.”

The surreal process quickly unfolded, and Searcy was soon on the show’s stage for the blind audition. Pharrell Williams, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton all quickly pressed their buttons, indicating they wanted him on

their team, and fought for Searcy, who sang a powerful version of “Skinny Love.” Adam Levine’s team was full, but that did not stop him from cheering on the musician.

been a fan of Pharrell’s production work and admired his musical smarts, Searcy said. Pharrell was Searcy’s main source of advice throughout the show.

In his final battle round, Searcy got the opportunity to perform “Breakeven”

by The Script. Not only was it a song he always wanted to cover, but also he got to perform it with Taylor Phelan, a friend he met on “The Voice.”

“The Voice” brought

Searcy some lifelong friends, he said. His favorite memories include sitting around campfires or hotel rooms performing original songs and covers with the other contestants.

“It felt like a very healthy, noncompetitive environment with a lot of people just getting together and making music,” Searcy said. “It was a really cool experience that I probably would not have pursued on my own.”

to be a musician for as long as he can remember.

Growing up listening to John Mayer and The Beatles, the singer/songwriter genre appealed to him.

A variety of original songs and covers from his biggest inspirations make up Searcy’s soulful and engaging performances.

Searcy has an EP set to release in the spring. He recently finished the first installment, which he said might be on the set list at

his Stillwater show.

He said he wants fans to come, expect to have a great time and be ready to get involved in the performance.

Scooter Spicer, a 23-year-old Alabama native and Searcy’s drummer, makes up the other half of the two-man show.

The two met in Nashville, Tennessee, through a mutual friend, and they paired up when Searcy needed a drummer for a show.

They said their favorite part of performing is getting to connect with people.

An interesting twist on a Searcy and Spicer performance is the karaoke installment at the end of the show. Searcy describes Spicer as a “karaoke fiend.”

Searcy’s tour consists of shows spanning from Waco, Texas, to Philadelphia. The tour has been a great way for the two men to visit their home state of Alabama, they said.

Thursday’s performance will be the twoman band’s first visit to Stillwater.

“We are stoked to come play a show,” Searcy said.

The Oklahoma State University community doesn’t treat body image lightly.

OSU Residential Life sponsored the forum, “Tunnel of Oppression: Revisited, a Conversation on Body Image.” The issue of body image and what role society plays in shaping the way people think about their bodies was focus of the event was the.

Audience members anonymously submitted questions, and panel members had the chance to

answer with their thoughts.

The panel of speakers included University Counseling Services’ Tamara Richardson, graduate students Ashley Hadwiger and Chris Jayne, and Assistant Director of Fitness Jason Vlastaras from the Department of Wellness.

Much of the conversation involved what living with an eating disorder or body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is like. Panel members said they believe society has placed unrealistic expectations of what “beautiful” or “masculine” looks like, and this is where many people’s problems begin.

The speakers explained no one is immune to developing an eating disorder, BDD or muscle dysmorphia. They added society has shaped us to think only women struggle with how they look or their weight, but men struggle as much, if not more.

Hadwiger said society as a whole is influencing young people at a developmental age to believe they must look a certain way to be loved, admired and valued, a form of social oppression.

“Body image is becoming a mental identity for many,” Hadwiger said.

is giving people a narrow window of “beauty,” and it is oppressing all the other characteristics that make a person who he or she.

The panel speakers emphasized bulimia nervosa and anorexia are not the only types of body disorders, and they are not seen in only women.

Jayne, a mental health counseling master’s student, said from as far back as G.I. Joe dolls, society tells boys they need to be muscular. As someone who works in physical fitness, he said he knows how dangerous overworking muscles can be.

“Physical fitness can

turn obsessive,” Jayne said.

An audience member asked how one could balance wanting to be healthy with not wanting to become obsessed with body image. The panel said it’s important to stay mindful and decide the intentions behind one’s actions. Important questions to consider are: Are you trying to lose weight to be healthy or to not be fat? Are you bulking up in order to impress people or because it’s a true desire you have?

Saige Morton, an animal science junior, attended the forum and said anyone could make society’s stan-

dard of beauty a personal identity.

“I would recommend this talk to anyone,” Morton said. “Learning more about where these issues stem from can help everyone better understand themselves and their peers who may be dealing with an eating disorder or body image problem. I seriously wish I would have heard this in high school; maybe I would think about myself differently.”

Two campaigns announced for top SGA offices SGA

The race for Student Government Association president and vice president is heating up with two candidates already filed for the campaign.

Colton Clark, a management information systems junior, was the first to announce his candidacy for SGA president with Ashleigh Rauner, a strategic communications junior, as his running mate.

After announcing their campaign last week, Clark and Rauner have collected more than 900 student signatures, surpassing the requirement of 500 to run.

Stephens and Farrell’s campaign slogan is “Unite the Campus,” a goal the campaign wants to accomplish through community, academics and leadership.

Stephens and Farrell are still gathering signatures, having announced their campaign Monday.

“Together, with your support, we can work to unite the campus and ensure that every individual’s voice will be heard,” Stephens said in her campaign video.

Neither campaign has released its platform.

Elections for SGA president, vice president and stu-

dent senators will take place March 7 and 8. Students can vote online at elections. okstate.edu.

The SGA president and vice president hold office at the head of the student government executive branch.

Among the responsibilities of the president are creating and improving SGA policy and initiatives. The vice president focuses on events and programming. Both officers have to communicate with the SGA Senate and represent the student body at various functions. NORMAN — Bedlam lived up to its name Monday night in Norman.

For the first time in 12 seasons, the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team defeated Oklahoma in the Lloyd Noble Center, 68-66.

“Big win for our program,” senior guard Phil Forte said. “It’s been a while.”

After OSU center Mitchell Solomon hit a pair of free throws to cut the Sooners’ lead to 66-65 with 24 seconds to play, bedlam ensued. Sooner guard Jordan Woodard took the inbound pass, pivoted and inexplicably lost his balance.

The ball came free.

Jawun Evans dove for it, shoving it to Lindy Waters, a Norman North graduate. Waters pitched it back to Evans, who drove to the basket only to airball his layup. After deflecting off Jeffrey

Carroll’s hands, the ball somehow ended up back with Evans.

Surrounded by crimson and cream, Evans caught a glimpse of an orange jersey on the perimeter.

Falling out of bounds, Evans threw a pass over his left shoulder to a waiting Forte. Forte caught the ball, rose and fired a shot that silenced the arena as it fell through nylon.

“I just happened to be in the right spot, right time,” Forte said.

The 3-pointer was the 303rd of Forte’s career; he became OSU’s all-time 3-point leader Saturday

against Arkansas, but Monday’s 3 in the game’s waning moments was the first game-winner of his career.

After a final defensive possession that Jeffrey Carroll block Kameron McGusty’s game-winning attempt, it was all over.

“I’m still trying to process all that ending,” coach Brad Underwood said. “Really proud of our guys from that standpoint that it was so many different people.”

Forte, a fifth-year senior, knows better than anyone what a game like this means. He has played in eight and sat on the bench for two more last season with a torn left ulnar collateral ligament.

This one ranked high, he said.

“It’s up there,” Forte said. “It’s right up there just cause of the rivalry.

We knew coming in that we were gonna get Oklahoma’s top game. Every time we play each other it’s always a really good game, very competitive.”

The Cowboys and

Sooners (8-13, 2-7) opened the game, trading baskets en route to a 36-35 lead for the Sooners at halftime. In the second half, the Cowboys stretched their lead to as many as 10 with under 13 minutes left, only to see it slip away as time dwindled.

OSU shot only 2-of15 in the game’s final 10 minutes, surviving on Evans’ numerous trips to the free-throw line.

Evans, who led all scorers with 24 points, picked up 11 from the foul line.

After watching the series from afar during his time playing and coaching at Kansas State, Underwood said the series lived

up to his expectation.

“As an outsider, being involved, you know when Bedlam happens, you know exactly who it is,” Underwood said. “Everybody in the country knows what Bedlam is and who’s involved. And yet, it hasn’t been very competitive, and that’s a fact. Rivalries are good when there’s games like this.” “ I think Bedlam’s back a little bit. The rivalry’s back.”
