From rivals to competitors to eventual teammates, Matej Vocel and Dominik Kellovsky have created an unbreakable bond.

In a country more than 5,000 miles away from Stillwater, two tennis masters were known in the Czech Republic for being ultra-competitive.

Even before they were in their adolescence, Vocel and Kellovsky were rivals.

Little did they know, they would be dominating at the same university in United State of America as the No. 2 doubles team.

“We have so many matches behind us in singles and doubles,” Kellovsky said. “We’ve known each other for a long time, and that’s definitely helped us to obviously know each other on the court and off the court.”

Vocel and Kellovsky started playing each other when they were 10 years old.

Since joining OSU, the duo have created a solid relationship off the court after growing up competing and wanting to beat one another.

“We were rivals fighting each other,” Vocel said.

“It was a tough childhood against each other, but right now and the last couple years, it’s been great.”

While their friendship was not the best before joining OSU, their chemistry playing in doubles has helped their friendship out

“Doubles is about knowing your partner,” Vocel said.

“It’s more about the mental part to know about each other in the tough situations and to say the right things in the crucial points,” Kellovsky said.

Kellovsky says the off-the-court relationship could go a long way to their national goal later on this season in Stillwater.

“I feel like we know a lot about each other out of the court, which will help us to win the national championship,” Kellovsky said.

On top of their success on the court, they are also veteran players who want to provide experience and leadership to the rest of the team.

“When two of the oldest guys are on the same page, then it’s much easier to lead

the team in the right direction,” Kellovsky said.

It didn’t come as a shock even for coach Jay Udwadia who pictured the moment they would be dominant in collegiate tennis.

“I respect that, but I knew they were going to be one of the top teams in the country,” Udwadia said. “I knew they would be excited to play together, so they have chemistry.”

Their communication is emphasized when playing doubles with each other.

Recently, coach Udwadia has had the pair go with different doubles partners.

“Teams will always stick together, but you just gotta find the best three teams we have and they may play together, they may not,”Udwadia said. “We’re just gonna find the best situation for that doubles point.”

Due to the rapid increase of students enrolling in the aviation and space program, OSU purchased and added five Cirrus SR20 aircraft to its existing fleet.

OSU established the aviation and space program in 1948 and has seen the program grow in size exponentially recently. As of Nov. 22, 2019, the program has seen a 40% increase in general enrollment and a 50% increase in enrollment involving experienced pilots.

The program purchased the Cirrus SR20 aircraft last spring, and the planes arrived in October. They are user-friendly, and the Cirrus SR20 is the prime model used for training exercises across the country.

“College funds were used by the College of Education, Health and Aviation at OSU to purchase the new planes,” said Lance Fortney, manager at the OSU Flight Center. “The primary reason the Cirrus models were purchased was to deal with the expansion of students

enrolling into the aviation and space program.”

The Cirrus models are used in commercial courses, including cross-country flying from Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, Texas.

“Cross-country” in flight school terminology is the flight direction of anything greater than 50 miles.

The Flying Aggies, a group of students who pride themselves on the culture of aviation, will use the planes for regional and national competitions against many different institutions.

“I’m excited to operate a brand new plane with all the latest avionics,” said Gavin Abendschein, a professional pilot freshman. “The Cirrus aircraft are known for their luxurious quality and will generate an overall exhilarating experience for any pilot or passenger.”

Alongside the Cirrus SR20 aircraft, OSU boasts an impressive fleet of 33 planes. These planes come in different shapes and sizes intended to efficiently train pilots in every aspect for both business and personal gains.

The Air-Line Pilots Association (ALPA), a union that focuses on supporting

pilots from both Canada and the United States, represents the OSU aviation and space program.

OSU is heavily involved with the ALPA Aviation Collegiate Education Club is the only school in the Big 12 Conference to be presented with the opportunity to partner with the committee.

This could explain the rapid increase of student enrollment over the past year. The ALPA has an outstanding reputation for advancing the development of professional pilots, and OSU has a fond relationship with the association. This recipe for success entices students who have a passion for aviation and space.

OSU is one of 18 schools in the country to grant students the opportunity to graduate with a degree in aviation.

“I think it’s a good sign that the program is growing and so is the university around it,” said Jake Mihelic, a professional pilot sophomore. “Even though some students aren’t accepted, the attention alone is enough to excite anyone a part of the program.”

Pro pilot students attend class like students from any major, but they also spend time in the sky.

A degree in aerospace administration and operations is in high demand on campus. The professional pilot option, specifically, has reached its peak over the past two years.

The growth in the aviation department at OSU has resulted in more planes and opportunities, including a new flight center scheduled to break ground in March.

With the rise in students, the program received five new Cirrus SR20 planes in October to keep up with the growing rate of pilots.

The growth in the program is because of the demand for professional pilots, said Lance Fortney, the flight program manager.

“It’s just a really good job profession to get into today,” said Fortney. “The job opportunities are off the charts.”

All flights take off from the OSU Flight Center, located just past the Stillwater Regional Airport.

The growing program has led to the announcement of the new flight center for OSU. There will be a ground breaking ceremony for the flight center March 7, and construction will begin in

summer 2020. Until then, students and faculty continue to train and work at the current flight center.

Pro pilot freshman Emily Kruse is the daughter of a pilot and a flight attendant. She has spent her entire life around airplanes, but it wasn’t until her first “solo” that she knew she wanted to become a pilot.

“It was so empowering,” Kruse said. “I thought if I can fly an airplane by myself, I can do anything.”

Originally from Oregon, Kruse did her research when deciding to attend flight school. The welcoming atmosphere and quality flight program brought Kruse to OSU. “OSU’s aviation program is great because it’s producing safe pilots and we are having a lot of fun doing it,” Kruse said.

Pro Pilot senior Nicolas Pash loves flying to OKC between classes.

“I can go out and fly for a couple of hours and go down to Oklahoma City,” Pro pilot senior Nicholas Pash said. “(I can) come back in an hour or half hour and then make it back to class like a normal student.”

Pash has flown through Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas while working toward his degree. He plans to fly for a regional airline and then eventually for a major airline after he graduates in May. All his flight experience has been completed through

OSU. Pro pilot freshman Preston Shoemaker has similar intentions; he hopes to fly for a regional airline.

Shoemaker earned his private pilot’s license before coming to OSU. He is on the path to earn his commercial license. This license requires extensive flying hours. Shoemaker has completed many of those hours in the new CirrusSR20 planes.

“The management at OSU Flight Center really lets us get good experience,” Shoemaker said.

“It came with a lot of valuable lessons that I’ve learned, and to be good at something like this… that’s what I think is so cool about aviation.”

The success of the students wouldn’t be possible without Fortney.

Fortney manages people, budgets and aircrafts for the Flight Center. Meetings with prospective students fit into Fortney’s schedule weekly, if not daily.

“Flying is a little bit different than a math or English class,” Fortney said. “If you have more students you just find a bigger classroom. Well our classroom is an aircraft, and there’s only two seats.”

The program is limited to 75 students each fall because of limited resources. This leads to the new flight center to be completed by August 2021.

When you see these names, you may think they’re references to various OSU legends. And while this is partially true, it’s not in the traditional way.

Brett Carver, an award winning wheat breeder in OSU’s Department of Plants and Soil Sciences, brings these famous Cowboy legends from their respective athletic and academic fields into fields across the country-- literally.

OSU has a wheat improvement team that breeds various types of wheat varieties in eight different testing sites throughout the state. The research for these varieties are done at the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, which is located in Stillwater.

This research and development process takes about 10 to 12 years, but after it’s done, a certain type of wheat is chosen and ready to be marketed.

This marketing process is what brings OSU legends into waving wheat fields across the nation.

“As soon as I see an experimental line with commercial potential, the marketing gears begin to turn,” Carver said.

Every name chosen for each wheat variety produced over the years

relates to the state of Oklahoma-- especially OSU-in a thoughtful and intricate manner. This naming process is so thoughtful that it begins about one to three years before a variety of seed is released.

The stories of how each seed variety got its name show how in-depth this naming process can be.

One of OSU’s newest wheat varieties, Baker’s Ann, is named after OSU president Burns Hargis’ wife, Ann, who is also known as the “First Cowgirl” “Burns and Ann came down to visit this facility one day, and they’ve always been great supporters of us,” said Jeff Wright, production and operations coordinator for the Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks. “Then Burns said something along the lines of, ‘Boy, it would be great if we could have a wheat variety named after the First Cowgirl.’ And so we did.”

Some of the names also reflect moments that happened in real life.

In 2012, OSU released the wheat variety “Gallagher,” which is named for longtime Cowboy wrestling coach Ed Gallagher.

The wheat was well known because of its yield potential, resistance to some bugs-- namely Hessian flies-- and increase in size.

was named after current OSU wrestling coach John Smith. This variety was similar to Gallagher, but it had even stronger genetics and stats.

According to a report from OSU agriculture communications specialist Leilana McKindra, the similarities in these wheats are intentional.

“The name Smith’s Gold was chosen to remind producers it carries forward the strong tradition of Gallagher just as OSU’s current wrestling program led by head coach John Smith has carried forward the strong tradition established

by Coach Edward C. Gallagher,” Mckindra said.

Other varieties, such as Skydance and Bentley,

aren’t necessarily household names, but they still have deep meanings.

“Skydance,” which was released in 2018, is a nod to the state of Oklahoma, not OSU. Skydance Bridge is a famous bridge on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City. The bridge was built in 2012 and is modeled after the Oklahoma state bird: the scissor-tailed flycatcher.

“The Skydance Bridge is a landmark in Oklahoma City and this particular variety has already been outside of our state,” Carver said. “We wanted to ensure that Oklahoma connection, because we think it’s going to go places beyond the state.”

leased in 2016, was named after one of the godfathers of OSU’s agricultural department: Walter Dimmitt Bentley. He was the first director of extension-also known as scientific agricultural research-- in Oklahoma and started working that position in 1914. While this seed was released in 2016, the name was chosen in 2014 to coincide with the extension’s 100 year anniversary.

When something is named in business, merchandising is bound to follow. OSU’s wheat distributors know this better than anyone. Every wheat variety that has a creative name has a hat to coincide with it.

“I kind of help with

some of the cap designs and have some input on some other things,” Jeff Wright said.

The hat that was given out for the “Pete Wheat” variety features Pistol Pete chewing on a piece of straw-- in true cowboy fashion.

The “Bakers Ann” cap features a loaf of bread, two wheat stems and “Baker’s Ann” written across the bottom. It’s also colored in Ann Hargis’ favorite color: orange.

Wright said with these creative names and designs comes high expectations.

“I think people have come to kind of expect something when we release a new one,” Wright said.

Adversity in OSU guard Ja’Mee Asberry’s past has influenced her on and off the court.

Being around six siblings might sound like a tough task, but for Ja’Mee Asberry, it was a blessing.

Having all those influences around her helped her stay up when things went down.

The OSU women’s basketball sophomore point guard was a talented high school player. She was named the Tulsa World’s All-World Player of the Year in 2017 and the Green Country Conference MVP as a junior in high school.

Then devastation hit.

In the span of a month and a half, Asberry lost her mother, Tylda Asberry, to lupus, an autoimmune disease. Then she tore her ACL, which caused her to miss her entire senior year.

“It definitely had a negative impact,” Asberry said.

“I still have my days, but at the beginning, it was not a

good route for me at first.

And then I just thought about how she wouldn’t want me going this way.

Then I tore my ACL, so then I was even deeper in a hole, and then I dug myself back up. Now I’m here, and now I’m getting interviewed so obviously I’m doing good.”

It was a tough stretch, but Asberry said she could count on her family to keep her smiling and laughing.

Although some of that family is finished with school, Asberry is still working toward a criminal justice degree at OSU. Asberry knows what she wants to do when she’s done: go to graduate school to study forensics then join the FBI. Going from a basketball player to a federal agent might not be the traditional path, but her logic is sound.

“My IQ is high,” Asberry said. “I have the strength, I have the speed. So just

in case I get into a sticky situation, I know how to handle it. I know how to be calm in a very fast-paced moment.”

While she’s not chasing criminals around yet, Asberry’s physical profile and skill set have translated to the hardwood. She’s OSU’s third-leading scorer, she averages the second-most assists and she holds the seventh-highest assist-toturnover ratio in the nation.

Despite all the hours she spends on a basketball court, Asberry still strives to excel in the classroom.

She was named Academic All-Big 12 last year.

“It’s very important because I want to graduate,” Asberry said with a smile.

“I don’t want to be one of the ones they like, ‘Oh she didn’t finish college so.’

My sister was a valedictorian. I’m not going to be like that, but I kind of want to follow in her footsteps.”

Pete’s Pet Posse is a pet therapy program started by the wellness program at OSU. Established in 2013, Pete’s Pet Posse has blossomed into a unique wellness program for the students, faculty and staff of OSU. This program has brought a lot of smiles to people on campus’ faces. It’s goal is to ease some of the daily stress college life may bring while promoting wellness for America’s healthiest campus. Pete’s Pet Posse helps people destress by petting a calm, friendly dog.

Joy Fieldsend, owner of therapy dog Sophie, describes Sophie as having a very calm nature and being a very social dog.

“She is very gentle, very soft,” Fieldsend said. “She loves people, so she’ll always have that interaction with everyone.

I think she’s just a calm influence. She’s got a very calm nature.”

This calm nature each of these dogs seem to possess is helpful to the students who use these dogs as a way to destress.

To be a part of this Pete’s Posse, you must apply and be accepted by OSU’s Pet Therapy Advisory Board. Once accepted into the program, the pet goes through training to make sure it can do

its job to the best of its ability. OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine takes care of the animals and makes sure they are healthy.

Each pet is assigned to a department on campus, and each time someone meets one of these friendly pups, they get a trading card with the dog’s information.

Many students love to collect these trading cards and try to collect a card from each pet in the Posse, including sophomore Anna Perez.

“I have thirteen trading cards,” Perez said. “Disco is my favorite dog because of his funky name.”

ally frequents the lobbies of the library and the Student Union, hanging out and putting smiles on students’ and faculty’s faces when they need it most.

Some students enjoy Pete’s Pet Posse, but some have the opinion that OSU’s resources to help release anxiety and stress should be put to use elsewhere.

“I definitely think (Pete’s Pet Posse) is fun, and it’s cool that Oklahoma State does this for its students,” sophomore Chloe Hatfield said. “But I don’t think it makes up for our lack of mental health options on campus.”
