In preparation for Valentine’s Day, students and staff at OSU had the opportunity to get revenge on past relationships and gifts for current relationships, all while supporting the entomology department.

Upon entering Edmond Low Library, a long table with cookies surrounded by smiling faces greeted library goers. These were students fundraising for the Sanborn Entomology Club on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

On the wall behind the table hung a list of names including exes, roommates and professors. These names will be given to some unlucky cockroaches, which will later be eaten by a “ferocious animal.”

Freshman club member Thomas Willis believes the fundraiser is a unique way to get people to donate to the club.

“I like the fundraiser because it’s a great way to get back at an ex without actually getting back,” Willis said. “It’s a way of telling them that to you they are

nothing more than a roach.”

The club charged $3 to name a cockroach, $3 for a cookie or $5 for both. The funds collected will go to the club’s general costs.

After getting revenge, students and staff were able to buy lotion bars and Valentine’s Day cards from OSU’s Beekeeping Club.

The lotion bars are all natural and made from coconut oil, shea butter, essential oils, vitamin E and, most importantly, beeswax. The club had several different scents available for purchase including; rose, lavender, Hawaiian, sugar cookie and unscented.

Other than fundraising, these clubs hoped to raise awareness for the importance of insects. Rayne Key, the president of the Sanborn Entomology Club, said insects are animals, too, and not enough people appreciate them.

“Insects are incredibly important to every aspect of our lives, whether we know it or not,” Key said. “Specifically, agriculture and what we eat. If we didn’t have bees, we wouldn’t have three-fourths of the food that we have at our grocery stores now.”

People only start to think about Valentine’s Day at the start of February. For Taryn Valentine, a graduate teaching assistant, it is always Valentine’s Day. How is it having the last name Valentine?

“Most people don’t make the connection unless it is Valentine’s Day so I get it a lot the couple days before or after. They’re like ‘Oh my god, your name. Is Valentine’s Day your favorite holiday?’ which it is not but that’s fine. It is just kind of a mixed bag. Sometimes people make a big deal about it other times not so much.

It is nice because everyone knows how to spell it.”

What do you think of Valentine’s Day? “It was a holiday made by companies to sell us stuff but it still represents love and getting people candy and flowers. While it was created for kind of nefarious purposes, I think showing your loved ones, significant others that you care about is the true meaning.”

Do you have any weird stories related to your last name and the holiday?

“No, surprisingly I haven’t. I wish I had a cool story. It’s pretty mundane most of the time.”

When you were a little kid did you think it was cool to have a holiday named after you?

“Oh yeah. It was definitely cooler as a kid. My mom would go all out, get us big

gift baskets of candy and make a big day of it. It was really fun as a kid. But, now the appeal has kind of worn off, it’s just another day. Just an excuse to buy 50 percent off candy the day after.”

Are there any weird inconveniences with the last name Valentine?

“No. Sometimes people think I’m named after the holiday which is odd. The name came first if I had to guess because the holiday was created around the 50’s.

We didn’t name ourselves.

I have grandparents with that name before then. But no inconvenience really. It is more of a handy thing

What does Valentine’s Day mean to you and your family?

“It just reminds me of family, that’s what Valentine’s Day really means

to me. Really just showing people love. Showing people love in a public way, expressing that love you have to other people in a kinda cartoony hearty candy way.”

Aspen “I never really expected to meet anyone on campus, that’s not why I’m here.” Merideth Proctor, biochemistry junior said.

In 2018 she happened to see Brock Keen, chemistry junior, from her differential equations class at Aspen while trying to avoid a research meeting.

That was the first time

they talked outside of class and they talked for five hours.

“I was scared that if I got up she’d walk away,” Keen said.

Now 18 months later, they don’t spend much time at the coffee shop but they still spend time talking about their research and all the struggles of classes.

cute too,” Keen said.

Basement of Physical Science Kathy Swallows just wanted a diet coke. She just didn’t have the exact change she needed. She poked her head into John Hays’ office right next to the vending machine and asked if he had any.

“I kept change in my desk because people ask me all the time.” Hays said.

Later, they met again at a Physics department party and found out their graduate student offices weren’t that far apart.

Four years later after driving back from Oklahoma City, Hays made a bold assumption.

“I said something like ‘if we get married’ and John said ‘no when we get married.’ and I was like oh, you’re serious.” Swallows said. They’ve been married for 28 years.

Murphy’s Tom Myers went out with a buddy from the chemistry department when he saw Lisa Phegley. He eventually convinced her to go on a date with him.

“We went out to a bar that doesn’t exist anymore and we went to Joes,” Phegley said. “I kinda thought he was going to be a jerk because of how he was showing me how to play pool.”

That wasn’t the case.

They started spending as much time together as they could together.

Kathy Swallows and John Hays met at OSU during graduate school and now have been married for 28 years.

Which meant they started spending time in Phegley’s lab.

“I was up all night on architecture stuff anyway so I would take a break,” Myers said. “it was just time we could spend together because we both had crazy schedules.”

They’ve been married for 21 years and are season ticket holders for football.

Chemistry Class Dakotah McBride accidently sat in a leftie seat on the first day of professor Halihan’s chemistry class. He looked over and moved next to Hannah Wheeler.

“I just thought she was pretty,” McBride said.

“It seemed like she had a

good sense of humor. I sat there the next day.”

Nothing came from this seating arrangement at first. Until a Tumbleweed concert brought them together. The next night was a first date at Olive Garden. “At the time, I don’t think either of us realized where it was going to go but now we’re here,” Wheeler said.

Now a year and a half year later they have weekly dates.

“We do have chemistry, I make that joke all the time,” Wheeler said.

Clampet met Riggin at

an open workout at Rose State in 2003. It wasn’t until Spring 2004 tryouts that Riggin remembers seeing her.

“This is someone I can stunt with,” Riggin said.

For that school year, they worked together to put on shows at OSU’s athletic events. Through that year, their bond as stunt partners grew. “(As stunt partners) you get to know each other pretty well,” Clampet said. “You learn to trust each other a lot.”

In 2006 the two got married on Willard deck.

“We thought it was really pretty,” Riggin said.

“Both sets of our parents met at OSU… it is just an important place for us.”

In preparation, I set out on a mini-bar crawl on the Strip on Tuesday to find the best Valentine’s shots the Strip has to offer.

Willie’s To round out my Tuesday night of drinking, I ended up at Willie’s. One of the favorite bartenders Kaeley was behind the bar. I asked her to whip me up a shot worthy of a Valentine’s kiss and she delivered.

Eddie Sutton racked up 806 wins during his coaching career, but he still hasn’t been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Eight coaches in Division I men’s college basketball history have notched 800 wins on the hardwood.

Seven of them have been inducted into The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

It’s an abomination to the sport of basketball that this column needed to be written in 2020, more than a decade after former Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton retired.

With 806 victories, Sutton remains the only 800-win coach in Division-I history who hasn’t been inducted.

Most voters in equivalent positions, such as Heisman Trophy voters and baseball Hall of Fame voters, reveal their identity and selections after the fact, but the basketball Hall of Fame lacks that accountability.

Sutton coached tournament teams at Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and his alma mater, OSU, after playing for the Cowboys and legendary coach Henry Iba during his college days from 1955 to 1958.

Sutton began his coaching career as an assistant on Iba’s staff at OSU after his graduation in 1958.

He later returned to Stillwater to coach the Cowboys from 1990 to 2006 and became the first

coach to take four schools to the NCAA tournament.

He coached three Final Four teams, one at Arkansas and two at OSU. The Cowboys reached the postseason 14 times in his 17 years in Stillwater, making him the second-winningest coach in school history behind Iba. So the question arises: Why is Sutton not already in?

Sutton’s been named a Hall of Fame finalist five times, most recently in 2016, but failed to get the minimum number of votes to be inducted. The panel is composed of 24 selectors whose identities have been kept confidential for decades.

Sutton’s Hall of Fame snub is not justifiable based on his body of work.

So, that moves us to the off-court issues, because as we all know, every member of the Basketball Hall of Fame has lived a perfectly moral, controversy-free life and has never had a single off-court issue - never coming close to committing an NCAA violation.

Sutton’s Hall of Fame candidacy is presumably damaged because, while at Kentucky during the late 1980s, an assistant coach was accused of mailing cash to the father of a recruit. Sutton was not implicated in Kentucky’s punishment.

Sutton also has a wellknown clouded history of alcoholism, and alcohol

ultimately being involved in his car accident in Stillwater in February 2006.

The alcohol-involved wreck ended Sutton’s coaching career, but opened up a new door for him, as he became an outspoken advocate on the dangers of alcoholism, and he spearheaded a campaign for an addiction center on OSU’s campus.

At the time, Sutton said he thinks God said to him, “You coached long enough. Now I want you to do something really worthwhile.”

Randy Rutherford, who played on Sutton’s 1995 Final Four team, said Sutton, “ ... has taught us a lot about life and about accepting responsibility for our actions.

“We all make mistakes in life,” Rutherford said.

“Judge a man by what he does to correct that mistake.”

So, to the 24 members of the Hall of Fame selection committee, have you made no mistakes in your life? Why is Sutton’s past being held against him, but not anyone else’s controversial past?

Did Derrick Rose not get caught cheating on his SAT at Memphis under the helm of (Hall of Famer) John Calipari?

He sure did.

Did (Hall of Famer) Bobby Knight not consistently make a mockery of our game by going ballistic on referees and allowing his anger issues

to control him?

He sure did.

Is (Hall of Famer) Bill Self not currently under FBI investigation at Kansas for committing major recruiting violations?

He sure is.

Rick Pitino was inducted after being involved in three different scandals, one of which involved prostitutes being paid to have sex with recruits and players under his time as coach.

Clearly the issue of morals hasn’t been a prerequisite for past inductees.

“First of all, Eddie Sutton belongs in the hall of fame,” ESPN’s Dick Vitale told The O’Colly.

“Eddie was a terrific, terrific sideline coach.

He’s right now struggling a little bit physically and my heart goes out to him.

I’m hoping he gets his vote to get in the hall of fame.”

As OSU commemorates the 25-year anniversary of the 1995 Final Four team this Saturday, it’s unfortunate its coach hasn’t been recognized for his contributions to basketball, and the impact he’s had on the young men he coached.

It’s an insult to basketball to exclude Sutton because a bunch of anonymous cowards clearly have some vendetta against him.

Valentine’s Day is upon us, and the age old question of what to buy your girlfriend has come up again.

Here are, arguably, the worst and most cliché gifts to waste money on this coming holiday.

A bouquet of red roses For the love of all things holy, please stop assuming every woman on the planet loves red roses as a default.

Personally, I’m a big fan of tulips. There are also a lot of women with a green thumb for indoor potted plants.

Succulents, cacti and other small potted plants make a wonderful gift the two of you can watch grow! Beware: not all women have a green thumb, e.g. my mom.

Stuffed animals Giving your adult girlfriend a stuffed animal as a gift, for any holiday, without substantial meaning or humor behind it is a bad idea. It’s probably going to end up in the “closet of random things” (every house has one) and forgotten

until she moves out of said house and it meets its final destination: Goodwill. Best case scenario is her dog, cat or drunk roommate destroys it, and she gets to pretend to be sad as she throws it in the dumpster.

Cheap lotion gift sets I know what you’re thinking: “Wow! This set is so cool, it has like three things, and it’s only $4.99 at Walmart, perfect!”

My response is to drop it and walk away. The lotion probably smells like glue and feels like liquid plastic.

Instead, take a look through her bathroom and find a lotion she already uses and buy her a bigger version of it. You know she’ll like the scent, and the gift won’t go to waste. *chef kiss* Anything with your name on it If you’re going to get your girlfriend a gift such as jewelry, do not put your name on it. Yes, I’ve seen “High School Musical” and will admit that my young teenage self swooned when Gabriela got a “Troy” necklace.

However, what happens *if*

(and probably when) you break up? Is she supposed to return it or what? Alternatively, get her a gift with her name or initials on it.

Gifts purchased from CVS on Feb. 13 If you find yourself in the local CVS at 9 p.m. on this day, turn around and walk out of the store. You’re better off going to Sonic, Fuzzy’s or Aspen and picking your girl up a $20 gift card.

Also, if you’re only in CVS at the last minute buying a gift for your significant other because you feel obligated to not show up empty-handed the next day, that is probably a sign of greater problems in your relationship. Just some food for thought.

The ultimate moral of the story for Valentine’s Day gifts is that effort and thought beat out clichés almost every time. Don’t get so caught up in rampant consumerism and “romantic” expectations that you lose track of the real meaning of giving gifts to the people you love most.
