O’Colly Creative recently gathered OSU students to honor those who participated in the Civil Rights marches from Selma to Montgomery. The Selma to Montgomery marches were three protest marches, held in 1965 from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital of Montgomery. The marches were organized by nonviolent activists to demonstrate the desire of African-American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. February is Black History Month.

‘Unfinished business’: Leeper enters fifth year with sights set on Omaha H allie Hart S taff Repo rter @ halliehart

Rob Walton isn’t sure how the extra motivation will affect Ben Leeper.

Leeper might step on the mound with pure adrenaline rushing through him and focus on throwing the fastest ball he can, distracting himself from concentrating on his command.

Or he might use this season as an opportunity to carefully think about every pitch he delivers and present himself as a formidable foe for each batter he faces.

Walton, the Oklahoma State baseball team’s pitching coach, said it depends on how Leeper approaches his fifth year with the Cowboys.

“I think if he puts (on) a mindset, ‘I’m going to prove to everybody I can really pitch,’ then you’re going to see somebody really special,” Walton said. “If he’s just wanting to go out there and trying to throw by everybody, then we could have some difficult games.”

During the previous season, OSU fell just short of a men’s College World Series berth, so Leeper returns with the goal of helping his team earn the opportunity it narrowly missed. In the Cowboys’ third Super Regional game against Texas Tech, Leeper stood on the mound as the Red Raiders paved their road to Omaha.

Ben Leeper, a right-handed pitcher from Southlake, Texas, has chosen to spend a fifth season at Oklahoma State.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Kurt Wilson blasted a three-RBI home run to right-center field, giving Texas Tech the 8-6 lead that propelled them to a CWS appearance.

It wasn’t the way Leeper would choose to end his OSU career, but it didn’t have to be.

“I think we have some unfinished business from last year,” Leeper said.

“We were six outs away from Omaha, and just being the one on the mound that didn’t get it done, I want to be able to make up for that and go back to Omaha this year.”

Texas, has eligibility left because he redshirted in 2016, his freshman year. After starting twice, Leeper couldn’t pitch for the rest of the season because of Tommy John surgery.

Although the injury kept him from having an active role, that year inspired him because he saw what it took for his team to advance to the big stage. The Cowboys made it to Omaha, something they hadn’t done since 1999, and would have played in the championship game if they had defeated Arizona one more time.

Of all the players on OSU’s roster, only Leeper

was part of that CWS team. As the one who has been a Cowboy the longest, he is reminded of his early days at OSU when he watches Walton mentor the young pitchers. Walton is still helping Leeper, too, so Leeper can control his pitches instead of just throwing for speed.

“It’s exciting in a way,” Walton said, “because if he puts it together, (he is) a dominant guy.”

During the past season, Leeper and Peyton Battenfield settled into roles as the Cowboys’ closers, but Battenfield left after the Houston Astros drafted him in the summer. Coach Josh Holliday

said Leeper, who had a 4.31 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 2019, could likely be a closer again, though a couple of freshmen also have potential to pitch in the final innings.

“When Ben’s healthy, he’s got really good stuff,” Holliday said.

“And it’s just a matter of him getting in shape and getting ready to go. We’ll definitely trust him, for sure. He’s been there and handled big situations, and that’s why he came back for his fifth year was to build on the season he had last year.”

Leeper said he loves pitching as a closer, and the Cowboys’ new home makes his last season

sweeter. He said O’Brate Stadium, which will open when OSU faces TCU on March 20, is a reason he chose to stick with the Cowboys, and his bond with his teammates also influenced him. If the season goes according to his goal, then they will share the experience of playing in the CWS spotlight.

“I didn’t want to leave college on a bad note after last year,” Leeper said. “And so I feel like I had something to prove to come back, so I’m really looking forward to the start of the season.”

Infielder Alix Garcia found his role on the Oklahoma State baseball team during the past season. He is entering his last season as a Cowboy and described it as bittersweet.

Alix Garcia is his own biggest critic.

The first baseman on the Oklahoma State baseball team has constantly worked on improving his craft since he joined the Cowboys last season.

After a slow start to his OSU career where he batted below .300 for most of nonconference play, Garcia found his groove once the Big 12 season began.

“That’s kind of when I started finding my role on the team,” Garcia said.

“I just kinda ran with it.

I didn’t want to be pulled out of the lineup after that because I got so used

to playing.”

Garcia’s mindset hasn’t changed as the senior prepares for his final season at OSU. Coach Josh Holliday said Garcia came to the field every day with something to prove.

“Alix is very competitive, and he’s been that way since he’s come here,” Holliday said.

Garcia continued to better his game with the help of OSU’s new hitting coach, former MLB all-star Matt Holliday.

Matt said he and Garcia have worked together on little aspects of his hitting to help him get to the next step forward.

to make sure he knows about himself,” Matt said. “I think sometimes as kids, you don’t even know your own swing very well. So [I’m] trying to help him help himself to where he can make pitch-to-pitch adjustments.”

Garcia said going into this season is bittersweet because he knew it meant the beginning of the end for his college career.

However, Garcia is ready to make the most of his remaining time at OSU. “The thing I like about him is he expects a lot out of himself,” Matt said. “He takes the game seriously and he’s gonna be a big part of our offense.”

Looking for a comparison, Oklahoma State baseball team coach Rob Walton thinks of Parker Scott and sees … Tom Glavine.

“He’s the one guy that people need to lean on,” Walton said.

Scott, the junior pitcher, has been bogged down by injuries his first few years, but he’s coming off a promising season where he led the Big 12 in ERA in conference-only games at 1.11. Now Scott is looked upon to take on a new role.

Coach Josh Holliday said the Cowboys are still trying to figure out their pitching rotation, but there’s a lot of positives.

“I think it starts with Parker Scott being healthy,” Holliday said.

“He is a very skilled left-hander who I think is going to have a really good year for us.”

While this is technically Scott’s fourth season on campus, injuries have limited his time down severely. Scott’s freshman year was cut well short and he redshirted his second year — both due to injury.

Scott said he feels like the injuries are behind him, and he’s ready for the upcoming season. He also said the arm is feeling a lot better.

can have — not just on a physical level, but a mental one.

“When you first get hurt and you start throwing knowing that you’re physically fine, you’re just wondering in the back of your head, is something going to happen,” Walton said. “So you got to get through the mental hump. So I think he’s kind of got past that.”

Walton said Scott has progressed well. He talked about how Scott can pitch with much velocity despite not being

a big guy, and Scott has four excellent pitches, which include a top-notch curveball and newly added slider.

Scott is a talented pitcher who the coaching staff is excited about.

Walton said Scott has matured a lot and has the potential to have a tremendous season.

“He’s still trying to kind of navigate himself as well even though he’s an older guy,” Walton said. “But he’s done really well at this particular point. I mean, he’s really our best guy.”

College is hard enough, but imagine leading a campaign on top of it.

Emilie Tindle, 24, is running for office in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives District 11 while continuing her studies as a sophomore history major at Oklahoma State.

Keeping up with school and a demanding campaign is a balancing act for Tindle.

Every week, she goes to class, and after class, she makes the hour and a half commute to Collinsville, OK. From there, she knocks on doors for two to three hours some days and six to seven hours on other days.

Walking from door to door, speaking to voter to voter, listening to each of their stories.

It’s all about stories, Tindle said. You can see this value in the major she chose and how she holds herself as a politician.

“The beauty of thinking as a historian is the mindset of looking for whose story hasn’t been told,” Tindle said. “And where do we need to bridge the gap, and who’s missing from the narrative.”

Tindle is the first Democrat to run for this seat since 2004 and the first woman to run since 1994. For her, running as a Democrat is not about picking a side in this divided nation; it’s about representing the voices who have been unheard for far too long.

You’re thinking about going out this weekend.

Maybe you’ve been out before or it’s your first time. Either way, there are some things to keep in mind while enjoying the bar scene.

Treat your bartenders like people, not butlers As a bartender, this is so frustrating. Bar patrons are quick to forget, especially under the influence, that bartenders exist outside of the walls of the bar we serve at and we are people with feelings (wow!). Screaming at a bartender or being rude for things outside our control are quick ways to make enemies of the people pouring the liquor.

Please refrain from it and be patient, we are trying our hardest!

Tip your bartenders There are specific times when tipping is unwarranted at bars and being a bartender, that is understandable. But most of the time, non-tipping behavior generally signals to bartenders they are better off, monetarily speaking, serving the customers who show appreciation in the form of dollar signs.

Over exaggerated thank yous accompanied with $0 tips don’t pay the bills.

History junior Emilie Tindle is running for the Oklahoma State House of Representatives for District 11.

At each door who welcomes her, Tindle asks voters what their concerns are with the state. What she has learned is people are concerned about their kids.

During this campaign, Tindle has focused on three issues with ideas for reform: education, healthcare and economic development.

Even though Tindle is running as a Democrat, she has no interest in choosing policy based on party lines.

What matters is good policy, not partisan policy, Tindle said.

“Everyone should have the same opportunity to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Tindle said. “We owe everyone these rights and the respect towards those rights.”

Tindle’s campaign manager, Tasneem Al-Micheal, is a student who attends the University of Oklahoma.

The two met through the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature, or O.I.L. Since the day they met, Al-Micheal knew he would

manage Tindle’s campaign.

In fact, he was the first to confirm Tindle’s thoughts about running by telling Tindle “you should run” during a conversation at an O.I.L competition.

Al-Micheal is well-versed in running campaigns, and Tindle is not his first client.

But even still, Tindle’s character is unlike anyone he’s ever worked with. “(Tindle is) the most caring, hardest working and most thorough person I’ve ever met,” Al-Micheal said.

“If you want someone who puts the needs of the people first, someone you can trust, who’s knowledgeable and researches her answers, is passionate and honest - I’ve never met someone as willing to go the distance.”

Election day is Nov. 3, but the Tindle campaign still has a long road ahead of them.

Until then, Tindle plans to do what she’s always done: work hard. And there are no signs she will slow down anytime soon.

Knowing how to treat your bartender and what to expect when you’ve had a one too many is important for you and your bartender to have a good night.

Many of us have an exact count for free pouring; if you ask for a cranberry vodka with light ice, you’re about to get a little vodka and a lot of cranberry juice. If you want a heavy-handed pour, you better be willing to ask (and pay) for it.

Don’t try to sneak drinks out of the bar In Oklahoma, it is illegal (in most cases) to openly consume alcohol in public. By having you dispose of any leftover drinks before exiting, the bar staff is saving themselves and you a HUGE legal headache. The last thing you want is to get arrested with half of a Coors Light in your hand from Murphy’s at 2:05 a.m. instead of hopping in the Curty Shack line.

Know your limits Cutting off a bar patron is not an easy task, especially when the customer seems to be having a good night or seems mostly harmless. But as part of the job description, we have to know when we can no longer serve patrons as a precaution against legal headaches and for safety reasons.

Going to the bars should be fun, not a forgotten blur that ends with a trip to a police precinct or worse, the hospital. We want you to have fun, try our best shots and enjoy your night. However, a glass of water or a reminder of how much you’ve already had to drink before ordering another “rum and coke” can go a long way in terms of saving your night.
