Dowell’s goals propels OSU to win over Brown

Halftime Adjustments Early on in the contest, the Brown set the tempo with a strong attack. That paired along with the high winds that blew into the Cowgirls territory, caused most of the first half to be spent on OSU’s side of the field.

The Cowgirls remained scoreless in the first half, and big adjustments needed to be made to get the offense going.

“We kind of weathered a storm in the first 15,” Carmichael said. “We knew Brown would come out hard. They had corners, they had crossers and they hit the bar. We kind of came into the game after 15 or 20 and had our chances at the post as well. So the game kind of evened out late in the first half but we knew with the wind there would be more territory for us and we just talked about hey end those moments in front of the goal we have to play, we have to execute.”

Second Half Performance The second half was all for the Cowgirls. Going into the second half, Carmichael knew the wind would play a part in swinging the momentum in favor for the Cowgirls. Most of the second half was spent in Brown territory, because of the wind blowing in that direction and the Cowgirl’s attack. The Cowgirls were able to capitalize off of the momentum change and Olyvia Dowell scored twice.

“The wind was a big factor,” Carmichael said. “We couldn’t get up the field as much.

We talked in the second half and we have more territory anyway because of the wind.

And what you do with that territory. We told them to get the ball on the ground. We didn’t want to play back to middle because they’re so athletic. We didn’t want to turn the ball over.

But once we got it forward we wanted to play and move them around. The girls executed brilliantly in the second half.”

Gundy rises over nerves, scores first touchdown in win Daniel Allen Staff Reporter Gunnar Gundy took the snap, scanned the field and analyzed the defensive coverage as music from the sound system inside Boone Pickens Stadium blared down toward the field.

The former walk-on hadn’t thrown a passing touchdown since 2019 — his senior year at Stillwater.

Until OSU’s 63-7 home win over ArkansasPine Bluff on Saturday night, admittingly, the nerves were there, but Gundy trusted his teammates.

From his offensive line to his wide receivers, the surplus of talent around him allowed the sophomore quarterback to maintain his confidence and composure.

Prior to taking his first snap of the night, which came midway through the second quarter, Gundy said starting quarterback Spencer Sanders assisted in easing his nerves with a pep talk.

As Gundy continued through the game, he saw true freshman wide receiver Talyn Shettron breaking toward the corner of the end zone with a cushion between him and nearby defensive backs in the second quarter. “(Shettron) had him beat,” Gundy said. “He’s just a really big wide receiver, really quick off of the line (of scrimmage). So, I saw one-on-one coverage and he’s a big strong guy.”

As Gundy released the football, he watched it float across the

field toward his intended receiver near the upper right pylon of the end zone.

The ball fell into Shettron’s arms, as the freshman toetapped and made it official for a touchdown.

As Shettron arose from the white and black turf and the OSU cheered. The offensive linemen herded around Gundy in praise.

As he looked toward the sidelines, he saw his teammates applauding him, jumping in the air out of excitement.

He recorded the first passing touchdown of his young college career, and became the first Gundy to throw a touchdown pass in nearly 35 years.

“It’s incredible to see,” Gundy said. “I’ve been

here (in Stillwater) for a long time. I’ve watched a lot of Cowboy football games. I always imagined myself (throwing touchdown passes). So, for it to actually happen, it was surreal for me.”

His father Mike Gundy, OSU’s head coach, played football at OSU in the late 1980s.

Gunnar said his performance held sentimental value to his heart, adding that for him to be able to carry on that family legacy and be the next Gundy to play under center at Oklahoma State is hard to put into words.

In the 72nd minute, the scoreless bubble popped. A cross from freshman midfielder Xcaret Pineda on a corner kick would led to a fading shot at the top of the box from Dowell, into the back of the net to put the Cowgirls on the board first.

“I think she channeled her inner Grace Yochum,” Carmichael said. “That’s what she said. For her to score a diving header, I’m not sure that’s something I would have said.”

Dowell agreed with her coach’s statement.

The Cowgirls have claimed four consecutive contests with Sunday’s win over Brown, outscoring opponents 13-1 over that span to conclude nonconference play.

With OSU opening Big 12 play on Thursday against Kansas on the road, Carmichael noted how offensive play is imperative for OSU having success moving forward.

While he knows that soccer is a sport of ebbs

and flows, having pieces such as Dowell outside of Yochum will go a long way in assisting his team to a potential shot at a Big 12 title.

“It gives us great confidence and great belief,” Carmichael said.

“That’s four in a row.

Winning matches and not giving up goals is huge. To beat a (team like Brown) heading into conference play, it really does give us a boost.”

In 1 Co.15 the Apostle Paul is reminding these believers of Christ’s resurrection and how true and real it was. He continues by emphasizing the sure promise of God that we are going to share in that resurrection one day. We will have a new, eternal body like Jesus has now. As we help in the work of God, furthering his kingdom;

demonstrating the love of God in blessing and serving others; as you and I get involved with helping missionary work, even going to help in short term mission trips or providing finances for others to go, we are laying up treasure in heaven “where moths cannot corrupt and thieves cannot steal.”

Actually, this kingdom of God, with forgiveness of all our sins and a new relationship with God as our Father, is offered to all mankind. If you have never opened your heart to Christ, asking for a clean heart and a new life; the door is open wide for you to come. You will not be turned away.

Then you too can begin to live for the eternal: laying up treasure in Heaven. I encourage all to consider these words, no matter your age, and choose the best and most satisfying life. It is a life following Christ as your Lord, and going for God’s best in eternity. It is a great and sure future!

News New Frontiers beam signing celebration shows progress for new ag hall

Mallory Pool Assistant News Editor More than 300 Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as New Frontiers donors, helped celebrate a milestone in the construction of the new Agricultural Hall.

The OSU Foundation partnered with the Ferguson College of Agriculture to host a New Frontiers Tailgate & Beam Signing this past week.

“The Tailgate & Beam Signing was another opportunity to bring the OSU Agriculture family together,” said Thomas G. Coon, vice president and dean for Ferguson College of Agriculture. “Last year’s tailgate helped raise awareness and created excitement for the campaign, and this year’s event highlighted the meaningful milestone of the beam signing.

We appreciate all our alumni,

donors, students, friends and family for spending their afternoon with us, celebrating the success of the New Frontiers campaign, seeing the tremendous progress on the construction site and participating in the beam signing.”

The signed beam will be used in construction of the New Frontiers Agricultural Hall, which is scheduled to open in fall 2024.

Earlier this year, university officials announced the goal of $50 million being reached for the construction of New Frontiers.

The New Frontiers campaign is recognized as one of the fastest capital campaigns at OSU, and the first academic capital campaign on campus to reach its goal prior to construction completion and the building opening.

“The Tailgate & Beam Signing allowed us to continue to raise awareness for the New Frontiers campaign and recognize donors who helped us reach our $50 million fundraising goal,” Coon said. “Although we have surpassed our fundraising goal, we will continue to raise support for

the project as we have naming opportunities available and features of the building that we know will enhance our efforts.

These naming opportunities and additional features will only be possible through additional donor support.”

OSU Regents Professor Emeritus Ray Huhnke attended the tailgate with his wife to sign the beam. In addition to having his name on the beam, Huhnke’s name also will be visible in the building, thanks to an honorary gift to name the Raymond L. Huhnke Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering Suite located on the second floor of the New Frontiers Agricultural Hall.

“It’s a tremendous honor to have my name be part of New Frontiers,” Huhnke said. “I am also honored to have been, and continue to be, involved in the building’s planning process.

Welcome to “Hell Paso”

A candid introduction reigns in Wetzel’s new era Brylee Smith Staff Reporter

Koe Wetzel wants to change the country music standards.

Released this past Friday, Wetzel’s new album, “Hell Paso”, has been all the talk in Texas Country. Although he is considered country, many would say that this album strays away from the genre. Wetzel said that this album is “pulling out all the stops”, and has a more alternative sound than what he is used to. With that being said, he does a great job of innovating a new sound for his fans.

Released as a single, “Creeps” has aired Aug. 28. It’s a more rock and roll take on a sad country song. It is no wonder this song became a hit. “April Showers”, another previously released single demonstrates the parallels between his new music and his 2019 album, “Harold Saul High”. I feel like this song is a testament to him going back to his roots with edgy lyrics and punk rock sound. While being slower than the previous song, “Money Spent” keeps up the trend of a hard rock sound but this song is still very versatile.

With similar sounds to William Clark Green at one point in the song, to even comparing what you would hear from Ozzy Ozbourne, this song hits the target.

“Sad Song”, another track teased on Tik Tok, generated a lot of attention surrounding Wetzel’s remarks about a past relationship and was one of his top-tier breakup songs. He apologizes for his mistakes while firing a few shots at her ex’s family.

After blowing up on Tik Tok, “Cabo” also generated a lot of hype.

As for the song itself, Wetzel used a mariachi band, and it fits well. He sings of how a woman “got me for my money”, “bloody dollar bills” and “trashed his place”. I was excited about this song, and unlike most artists who tease songs that end up not being worth the hype, Wetzel exceeded my expectations with this song.

Overall, I would rate this album 6 1/2 out of 10. It was solid, but not as

highly anticipated and fruitful as some of his previous albums. Some of the songs seemed more like filler and less like bangers. I think that the songs he teased on social media were the strongest on the album, hence the reason he chose to tease them. As for the songs

‘Babylon:’ A return to the golden age of Hollywood Connor Gray Staff Reporter Whether it is because of the loaded cast, beautiful look or revisiting of an iconic era, Christmas Day of 2022 appears to be providing cinema fans with a treat with the release of

‘Babylon.’

Writer and director Damien Chazelle looks to be taking a deep dive into the rise and fall of several characters in 1920s Hollywood — an era of moral decline and depravity. This is a story of ambition, luxury and its subsequent consequences. After watching the first trailer for ‘Babylon,’ I am all in and I have high expectations for this film.

Seeming to take inspiration from the products and people of the era as well as from more modern projects like ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ this comedy-drama will likely be the

usual highly exaggerated version of what life was truly like back then with some truth throughout, but I think this could be a blast to experience.

With big-name actors such as Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Jean Smart and Tobey Maguire headlining the film and the direction of the highly skilled Chazelle, ‘Babylon’ is bound to be a love letter to the foundations of the Hollywood we know today.

Chazelle’s attachment to the film as both writer and director is certainly where much of my optimism for ‘Babylon’ comes from, as he has managed to be a part of beloved projects such as

‘La La Land,’ ‘First Man’ and ‘Whiplash.’ With a Christmas Day release, ‘Babylon’ will undoubtedly have to go against some blockbuster juggernauts at the box office and its 3 hour and 5-minute runtime may hurt it, but I think ‘Babylon’ is a film that is deserving of a shot based on all that has been revealed thus far.
