Red Zone a dangerous, vulnerable period for students on campus News I More sexual assaults occur on U.S. college campuses during the first six to 10 weeks after students arrive on campus than any other time during the school year.

At the beginning of the fall semester, students are in danger.

During the Red Zone, students are at a higher risk of being sexually assaulted than any other time during the school year.

The length of the Red Zone is not confined to specific dates, but it is generally the first six to 10 weeks after a student

arrives on campus.

A 2008 study from Middlebury College in Vermont determined the Red Zone to be an increased risk particularly for first-year college women during the first weeks of classes. The data showed that a daily risk for sexual assault steadily dropped off through Thanksgiving among first and second year participants.

The higher risk of sexual assault accompanying the start of the semester isn’t the result of any one problem; there are multiple contributing factors.

John Foubert, an OSU professor and national expert on sexual assault prevention, said the findings indicate a combination of new students and

a dangerous environment.

“I think it’s in part both the position of the perpetrator and in part being on a college campus,” Foubert said. “You have many people who are young that are interacting socially with few restraints, and it’s an unfamiliar environment to many, and it leads to a higher risk for sexual violence.”

Of the 29 reported incidents of sexual assault at OSU from 2010 to 2014, 27 percent occurred during the first six weeks of the fall semester.

But that number doesn’t tell the entire story. A 2014 Department of Justice report found that females ages 18-24 report only 20 percent of campus sexual assault

incidents that occur. The same study found nonstudent victims in the same age group report at a higher rate of 32 percent.

Because of the small number of sample cases of male victims, the report focused exclusively on females.

Suzanne Burks, University Counseling Services director and OSU’s sexual assault victim advocate, said the reasons for not reporting sexual assault vary with each case.

“The reasons we see the most, ( is victims are) afraid people will be mad at them,” Burks said.

“They’re worried people will shame them and that they’ll be embarrassed.

Sometimes they just don’t want to get some-

one in trouble.”

OSU is not alone — this is a problem that affects campuses across the country during these first weeks.

Foubert said the Red Zone leads to several dangerous weeks each year when perpetrators tend to look for victims who aren’t experienced in a college environment and take advantage of a lack of self-confidence during the transition into college life.

Burks said the same transition and a desire to fit in puts freshmen at risk early in the semester.

that’s a piece of it,” Burks said. “ A lot of them haven’t had a dime’s worth experience with drinking, which is probably a good thing except they get up here and the alcohol is flowing freely.”

The problem of sexual assault during the first six weeks has become a priority for prevention programs at several universities across the country, including the University of West Virginia and Ball State University in Indiana.

Lt. Mark Shearer, OSU Police Department training supervisor, said prevention is a critical part of student safety during the first few weeks and beyond.

Shearer said the No. 1 preventative step people can take is being aware of their surroundings at all times. He also said they need to not only be aware of where they’re at, but also their points of exit in the event a bad situation develops.

“In an environment where you have so many people coming together, for many of those folks it’s the first time they’re making any decisions,” Shearer said. “Sometimes because of inexperience or maturity levels, yes, there may be that opportunity for someone to make a bad decision and

But Foubert said even though the brief online approach of 1is2Many meets the minimum standard for education set by the 2013 Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, he thinks online programs

“The big mistake I think college campuses are making right now is they are using the online program in order to meet basic legal requirements,” Foubert said. “But they’re not doing things that data has shown to be effective, and I think we need to focus on being effective and

not efficient. … I have not seen research that convinces me that those have any effect but to meet the bare minimum federal requirements to educate a population.

What to do if you’re sexually assaulted: staff reports

Whether you decide to report the sexual assault to law enforcement, it’s important to know what resources are available to you on campus and in Stillwater.

• Depending on the situation, such as where you are and whom you are with, you might need to get to safety.

Call 911 if you are not in a position to make it to the hospital yourself or are still in danger.

•Do not shower or clean up directly after the attack. Do not change clothes or move things around the room or area where the incident occurred. Also, don’t chew gum, eat, drink or take any medications before going to the hospital.

•You need to go to the hospital as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more the forensic evidence will deteriorate, so it is important to make it a priority. Consider calling a trusted friend to go with you if you feel uncomfortable going by yourself.

• Go to Stillwater Medical Center, 1323 W. 6th St., for medical attention. They will treat any injuries you sustained in the attack. They can also treat you for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, free of charge.

•At the hospital, a sexual assault nurse examiner will be notified and you will be taken to a private room. A sexual assault response advocate and a police officer will also be called to support you. If you give permission, the nurse examiner will collect evidence and treat your injuries. The rape kit will be submitted for processing.

• The police officer will take your statement in a location where you feel comfortable. Police will be give you the option

of pursuing the situation legally. If you are able to identify your assailant, police will be take the person in for questioning, and an official investigation will begin.

• Newspapers and other media outlets will most likely not print your name in any publication because they aim to protect victims. There are many resources in place to help victims through the court process and the aftermath of the assault.

• Most importantly, the incident was not your fault. Saying “no” to the perpetrator is enough to deem it rape, even if al-

cohol was involved. No matter what the situation, consent is needed in order for sex to occur legally, and you will not be blamed or targeted as a result of the rape.

•OSU has a designated sexual assault advocate, Suzanne Burks, who can be reached at 405-880-0766 to assist you and

help meet your immediate needs. Burks will give you advice, information, talk with you about your options and facilitate decision making. Stillwater also has a 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Hotline, 405-624-3020, to help meet these needs.

Rape or sexual assault can happen to anyone, man or woman, and it’s never the victim’s fault. However, it helps to think about how you can stay safe.

•Stick with your friends.

•Hold on to your drink — even when you go to the bathroom.

•If your drink is out of your sight, even for a few seconds, get a new one. Spiking a drink with can happen quickly.

•Don’t drink from punch bowls or open containers.

1is2many is just a beginning, not an end Editorial: OSU and its students can do more to prevent sexual assault.

A 45-minute computer course isn’t enough to prevent sexual violence.

Last fall, OSU began mandating all students take the online course “Haven — Understanding Sexual Assault,” before they were allowed to enroll in the spring semester and got the conversation started about sexual assault on campus.

OSU also launched 1is2many, a program

dedicated to information about sexual assault reporting and domestic violence that provides resources for students.

But we at the O’Colly believe this is the beginning of the conversation, not the end.

OSU, along with the federal government, should require inperson sexual assault education in an effort to prevent sexual assaults from happening.

Sexual assault on college campuses used to be a taboo topic, but has made headlines as more people have stood up against sexual violence, especially the way universities are handling it.

Colleges and universities, including OSU, have been heavily scrutinized for the way they have dealt with sexual assault complaints and the way they continue to.
