ourtney Dike has been a team leader with her work ethic since her freshman year, and as a senior, she is starting to become a leader vocally.

Dike came to Oklahoma State in 2013. She made an instant impact, starting 21 games and scoring 13 goals, the fourth most in school history.

OSU coach Colin Carmichael said Dike has always set an example with her effort, but this season, Dike has been asked to be a leader with her words as well.

“It’s not something Courtney is the most comfortable with,” Carmichael said.

“We’ve asked her to be more vocal, and she’s done that.

She’s kind of grown into her leadership role.”

Dike said she was shy when she entered the program, but has come out of her shell. She said her vocal

leadership was a “work in progress.”

Dike’s scoring ability needs less development.

Jaci Jones, a freshman on the team, said she has grown up playing against Dike.

Jones said Dike has always been a hard worker, and her scoring ability separates her from most.

“She can score; that’s her thing,” Jones said. “Anytime she gets the ball, I’m so confident that we’re gonna score.”

Dike’s scoring ability has led her to women’s soccer’s highest level. In 2014, Dike traveled to Canada with the Nigerian national team and participated in the U-20 World Cup. A year later, Dike went back to Canada as a part of Nigeria’s Women’s World Cup team.

Jones said Dike’s words leave a big impression given Dike’s growing résumé.

“Just hearing her tell you how to do something, it’s one thing to hear it from your coach, but whenever it comes from her, she’s played at the highest level, I want to do it that much more,” Jones

Dike has been named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in each of her three seasons, and this season will cap one of the most decorated Cowgirl soccer careers ever.

Dike has already started her senior year off in the scoring column with a goal in the 58th minute of the Cowgirls’ 2-0 exhibition victory against No. 8 Texas A&M. “It’s crazy,” Dike said.

“I feel like four years went by really quickly. I’m super excited for the season. I think devin Wilber/O’Colly we have something special this year.”

“They’re tired. Hopefully, the depth we have this year allows a kids like Courtney or Natalie (Calhoun), who may be 90-minute players, if we can have them be 75-80-minute players, that adds up over the year, and at the end of the year, you’ve got a fresher group.”

Heading into her senior year, Dike said she is confident after a productive offseason.

“I had a good summer, summer workouts, preseason, everything is going great,” Dike said.

The road trip will be OSU’s first chance to fix last year’s mistakes. The Achilles’ heel for the 2015 Cowgirl team was allowing crucial goals at the end of games. Communication can remedy that, Ongaro said.

“Me talking to the defenders and having them relay a message all the way down the field makes the job easier and prevents goals,” Ongaro said. “I can see everything, so it is the least I can do is talk to my defenders.”

The Cowgirls opened 2015 with a 2-0 victory over Mercer. OSU outshot the Bears 26-3 and received goals from Holly Brehmer and Haley Woodard in the win.

OSU defeated Kansas at home on senior night, 2-0. Madison Mercado and Niki McKnight had goals for the Cowgirls as Ongaro recorded her fifth shutout.

Aug. 28

Sept. 13

After dropping three-straight games, the Cowgirls came back with wins against Gonzaga, Arizona State and UMKC. Laurene Tresfield scored a goal and an assist on her 20th birthday in the game against the Sun Devils.

Oklahoma defeated the Cowgirls 2-0 in Stillwater. Michela Ongaro got her fingers on the first OU goal, but it rolled past as the Sooners scored in the first half.

OSU had to face top-seeded West Virginia in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament after the Cowgirls received the eighth seed. OSU failed to notch the upset and lost 2-1.

Stephenson tallied the Cowgirls’ only goal.

The Cowgirls ended their season with a loss to Bedlam rival OU, 2-1. Despite a 1-0 lead at the half, OSU gave up two unanswered goals in the second half to lose in Norman. Allie Stephenson scored the Cowgirls’ lone goal in the 32nd minute.

Fear struck Metcalf’s brain. There was a forgotten form, he figured, or his eligibility had run out.

He didn’t expect a positive result.

When Metcalf arrived, Johnson stood up from his desk and hugged him.

OSU’s staff had decided to put Metcalf on scholarship.

The first person he told was his dad. He texted him to not worry about the loans.

Fewer than five minutes later, Kent Metcalf called, perplexed. His son delivered the good news.

“Are you kidding me?”

Kent Metcalf responded.

Through the phone, Metcalf could hear his mom, Dee, “hooting and hollering” in the background.

After all his parents had done for him, Metcalf couldn’t keep a smile off his face talking about how he’d proven himself good enough.

I remember my first Cowboy football game.

I went with my friends to watch Oklahoma State defeat Missouri State 40-23. Although it started as a nonconference game against a creampuff opponent, it changed the course of OSU’s season.

Quarterback J.W. Walsh injured his right foot in the first half. It was unexpected, it was impactful and it was newsworthy.

Walsh’s health became the prime concern surrounding the football team.

There were several outlets — both local and national — that provided updates on Walsh’s status.

Then, Walsh had surgery on the foot and missed the rest of the season. The attention turned to his replacement. Coach Mike Gundy called on Daxx Garman.

Later, Garman went down with a concussion.

play the final three games for the Cowboys. He led them to a Bedlam victory and a bowl berth when it looked as if they might miss one for the first time since 2005. Then, he led them to a Cactus Bowl title.

He gave fans optimism heading into next season.

The O’Colly was there for it all.

When I wanted to find out whether Walsh would play, I opened a copy of the O’Colly and read it. When I wanted to know each of the quarterbacks’ statuses, I went to ocolly.com.

The student newspaper was a valuable tool for me as a sports fan. I also liked that the writers were my age. In many of the opinion pieces I read, I found myself nodding along in agreement. I didn’t always agree, and you won’t either.

But I appreciated that the coverage was there.

I’ve switched sides, now the creator instead of the consumer.

As I embark on this new experience as sports editor, I hope that my time in your shoes will better enable me to deliver the content you want to see.

I know that encompasses a variety of sports, not only football. The O’Colly is unique in that it provides in-depth coverage of every OSU sport. It’s the only place you might read about football, soccer and eques-

With a large staff of students, we are able to have a writer there for everything taking place on or near campus.

This year, we will even be providing coverage of select club sports through our new website, the O’Zone. The site will also feature blogs on sports — both professional and college — and entertainment.

I understand that sports are a vital part of OSU. It’s the reason I came here.

Many of you probably grew up Cowboy fans.

Many more of you will become one during your time here.

If you love sports, you know it’s about more than what happens on game day.

Sports are constant, and I want to give you the stories you desire. If you have any ideas or feel as if I am lacking in a certain area, do not hesitate to contact me.

Oklahoma State University’s award-winning student newspaper has served Stillwater and the campus community since 1895. The O’Colly is a real newsroom that prepares students for a professional career in journalism.

stop; they’re going to be proud of me either way, but I know it really gets them going that I’m still trying to work at it.”

BLOODY BEAST OSU quarterback Mason Rudolph can’t think of one example of a time when Metcalf hasn’t given absolute effort. That’s because he gives that amount every day.

Metcalf quickly picked up the moniker “Beast” after making the team. He leaves practices with his arms and back bloodied and scraped, Rudolph said.

“He’ll just ram his face up in there in the run game,” Rudolph said.

“He’s a physical dude, not afraid of contact.”

Metcalf said he had no expectation of being placed on scholarship. He had no plans to stop working hard.

“I’ve had people tell me, ‘Be ready for it. It’s gonna come if you keep working your butt off. Somebody’s gonna reward you for it,’” Metcalf said. “I always had that in the back of my head.”

It’s that attitude that left Rudolph and other teammates convinced Metcalf deserved to no longer be a walk-on.

“We all kind of anticipated it,” Rudolph said.

“He’s a senior, he’s a heck of a hard worker and gives great effort on the field.

Just a great guy. We were pumped for him.”

Oklahoma State fullback Keegan Metcalf was placed on scholarship Monday. He tried to walk on in January 2014, but the Cowboys did not have a spot for him. He made the team the next semester. Metcalf played in eight games in 2015.

was football, and after being the Elks’ team MVP, he spent a season with Oklahoma Baptist in 2013, the program’s first football team since 1940.

After walking on for the Cowboys, he saw no game action in 2014. Last season, he appeared on special teams in eight games, but he recorded no statistics.

Four of his uncles were All-American athletes.

Jim, Dan and Joe Metcalf ran for OSU while Leon Heath was a fullback for Oklahoma’s football team.

“Just like all of us, he’s thankful to be in this position and to be a part of this

team and represent this university,” Rudolph said.

“It says a lot that he’d stick around this long not being on scholarship. I think the coaches did a great job of rewarding his hard work.”

COWBOY COMMONALITIES At some universities, the difference between walk-ons and scholarship players is stark, as preferential treatment falls to those who financially benefit. The walk-ons, those who sacrifice their bodies without money to back up their decision, are often left with less.

That’s not the case at OSU, linebacker Chad Whitener said. Whitener spent his freshman season at Cal and walked on at OSU in 2014. Whitener, placed on scholarship before last season, said Cal treated walk-ons well, but the Cowboys’ style seemed to be at another level.

“How we treat our players here, there’s really no difference,” Whitener said.

“The walk-ons get treated the same way. We all eat at the same place. We all hang out. We all sit in the same meetings. There’s really no step off besides the financial part of it.

“I didn’t know half our

walk-on class were walkons. The way they were treating everybody, I just didn’t know.”

Metcalf said the Cowboys put an emphasis on team unity. A large part of that is recognizing the similarities the players have with one another, regardless of whether they’re on scholarship.

“There’s not very many differences between each person’s story and life, even though we have the extremes,” Metcalf said.

“Deep down, we’re all here for one reason: to play football. There’s a lot of commonalities between everyone.”

He said the greatest benefit of the scholarship came financially, knowing he lifted the financial burden off his parents and won’t have to pay off loans down the road.

Although he’s focused on the upcoming season, which will be his only on scholarship, it becomes easier to turn his attention to the future as the money is less questionable.

A university studies major, he planned only a couple of months ago to go to a vocational school to become an electrician; he likes working with his hands and the science behind it, he said.

Instead, after conversations with Rob Glass, OSU strength and conditioning coach, and others in the department, Metcalf said his career might come in strength development.

He has worked tirelessly to be an integral part of the OSU football team.

Letting go of that after this season seems to be stopping a step short.

“I love this kind of atmosphere,” Metcalf said.

“I’m definitely not ready to give it up.”
