his year, Oklahoma State freshmen moved in later, will end a watered-down Welcome Week two days into class and are paying the most money of any class in history.

These aren’t the most ideal circumstances while entering, for most, the biggest change of their lives.

The governing council that set the Welcome Week schedule is composed of representatives from several major departments at OSU such as New Student Orientation, Residential Life, Admissions Office and Office of the Registrar.

The committee started meeting monthly in October and decided in May upon the best possible Welcome Week schedule for students, all this after a 7 percent increase to tuition and a 3 percent increase to Residential Life rates.

Gripes varied from student to student, but the one similarity was that their first few days at what many consider to be one of the friendliest universities in the nation could have been handled better.

Monday issues will consist of the news and events of the past weekend and the week ahead, making it your go-to guide for understanding what happened last night and preparing for what’s to come.

Wednesday issues will center on entertainment and telling your stories.

We’ll discuss Stillwater’s music scene, but we won’t hesitate to detail the club that’s doing a great deal of humanitarian good or the

professor who is relentlessly working outside of the classroom to make sure her students succeed.

Friday issues will offer the most in-depth Oklahoma State sports coverage you can get your hands on. Not only will we track the football team’s quest for a Big 12 title, you’ll also be kept informed on the efforts of Cowgirl soccer, OSU cross-country, and various other club and NCAA-sanctioned sports. The O’Colly will provide the most coverage of sports that don’t get the attention football and basketball do.

Our website will also feature more digital and multimedia content than ever before. We intend to make the O’Colly as much a video product as it is a print product. We’ll also be adding the “O’Zone,” an online hub for blogs about OSU athletics, coverage of club sports teams, and national sports and entertainment news, in the weeks to come.

Our investigative team will delve into the university’s payments and decisions, giving you a window into the choices and expenditures OSU’s administration is making

I love OSU. I wanted to be a student here since I can remember. My grandfather was a student here and died before I was born. When I put the newspaper together Sunday nights, every word is printed so our school is better than when he attended.

The woman who is accused of driving her vehicle through the Oklahoma State homecoming parade pleaded not guilty in early May. Adacia Chambers, 25, was at Payne County Courthouse for an arraignment hearing on account of her four counts of second-degree murder and 42 counts of assault and battery likely to produce death. She is held on $1 million bond.

Oklahoma State made its first College World Series appearance since 1999 this June. OSU was playing its best ball of the season heading into Omaha, Nebraska.

Pitcher Thomas Hatch and the OSU starting pitching staff were dominant, holding an ERA under 1.00, but the Cowboys lost back-to-back games against eventual runner-up Arizona.

The OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved the fiscal year 2017 budget at its summer meeting, including a 7 percent tuition increase for all undergraduates and in-state graduate students while non-resident graduate students’ tuition increased by 5.2 percent.

Gina noble

Stillwater mayor and Oklahoma State professor Gina Noble delivered the shocking news of her breast cancer diagnosis this summer during a public address announcement for Stillwater Medical Center’s 3-D mammography program.

Noble said her doctors caught the breast cancer early, fortunately.

Noble will continue to hold both of her positions as her treatment begins.

Junior college basketball transfer Tyrek Coger collapsed after running the steps of Boone Pickens Stadium.

He was taken to Stillwater Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

He was 21.

Coger transferred to Oklahoma State from Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“I think it’s good timing,” Sheppard said. “It gives me time to check out my classes.”

Sheppard’s approach is the last thing the assistant director of New Student Orientation said she wants.

“We hope the students will come to as many Welcome Week events as they can,” Palvih Bhana said. “There is something for everybody.”

Week has been shortened and tightened this year because of classes starting earlier than in years past.

The event calendar is smaller than a year ago.

There is no movie night, no concert, no lawn party. Welcome Week started on a Wednesday last year after a Tuesday move-in, and it ended that Sunday.

This year, it starts and ends two days later than last year. Fifty-eight events happen Monday and Tuesday, after the first classes of the semester get underway.

“That’s a little hard,” Bhana said. “It was tough this year, especially with school starting, but at the

same time, we are going to offer sessions. Our presenters who do have sessions know they may not have as many people because of classes, but not everybody has a class at that time.”

At a university of about 25,000, Bhana isn’t going to please everybody, she said. She is disappointed Welcome Week couldn’t include some of the glamorous events it featured before.

“But I hope next year, when we go back to our normal schedule, we can do that,” Bhana said.

Oklahoma State University’s award-winning student newspaper has served Stillwater and the campus community since 1895. The O’Colly is a real newsroom that prepares students for a professional career in journalism.

We publish Wednesdays in the summer.

We are online 24/7 with fresh content daily, breaking news, sports and more.

The O’Colly is independent from the university and entirely student run, with more than 100 students on payroll. A staff of three professionals advise, guide, educate and provide support.

The O’Colly is governed by the Student Media Board, which is made up of faculty, staff, students and Oklahoma media members.

In 2015, the O’Colly was honored for the fourth year in a row as Oklahoma’s best college newspaper by the Oklahoma Press Association.
