Josh Holliday drove down McElroy Road about three weeks ago, a route he normally doesn’t take to get home.

Holliday, who played baseball at Oklahoma State, has family ties to Stillwater and is in his sixth season as the Cowboys’ baseball coach. He said he glanced out a window, seeing fences, construction signs, dirt and some big yellow tractors.

He stopped at Washington Street and McElroy, realizing something remark-

able was in the works.

“I thought, ‘Wait a minute, there is actually something going on right there,’” Holliday said. “It kind of hit me that this is all coming together; it is all happening.”

March 29, OSU announced plans for a new baseball stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2020 season. Looking toward his players and all the media members, Holliday, who sat between OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder and architect Jim Hasenbeck, smiled inside Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.

W&W Steel in November, Holder said he was told the final-bid offer for the upgraded baseball complex would be $60 million.

Holder said the athletic department didn’t have

that much money at the time, which was an issue.

After money spent on the land and other auxiliary features, he said the stadium will cost about $75 million.

Holder said change and improvement within the athletic department can’t happen with compromise.

He said if OSU wants to be the best, it’s vital it has the best facilities. At the news conference, Holder discussed the past, present and future for OSU’s sports scene.

He talked about his relationship with T. Boone Pickens, an OSU alumnus and megadonor who donated $165 million to help start the change with transforming the football program, adding Boone Pickens Stadium. He said Pickens’ impact on campus went far beyond his

OSU soccer coach Colin Carmichael and his team, which is coming off its sixth Big 12 title in program history and first since 2011, have a new $20 million stadium on the way, as well. OSU announced April 26 it would revamp its soccer stadium, thanks to a donation from graduate Neal Patterson.

The upgraded stadium, which will be named after Patterson, who died July 9 because of complications of soft-tissue cancer, will open for the 2018 season.

“being faithful with a few things” is important. Sometimes, in our thinking, we can be misled and consider the few things in our personal life of little value. They really don’t count for much.

We may not have a great, well exposed life that many see and appreciate. We need to realize the Lord Jesus is concerned about our faithfulness with the “LITTLE” we have, rather than the “BIG” that we do not have.

You and I may stumble and even fall in our Christian walk with God, but it is so important that we get up, be honest, confess our failure, and keep walking with Christ.

Keep your trust in him, who died for you and rose again. He is alive and he will be there to encourage and help us to carry on. Don’t Quit! A well done from Jesus is so valuable I know we’ll see Jesus some day.

After the baseball news conference April 29, a group of media members toured the stadium during construction with Carmichael. Carmichael, who has coached at OSU since the soccer program started in 1996, has been allowed to tour the stadium about five times and said he can’t believe the progress. He said he remembers the first time he walked in.

“I was just like, ‘Wow, it is real. It is finally happening,’” Carmichael said. “Now, it is almost done. … I still have to pinch myself sometimes because it is such a vast improvement from what we have had. It has been a long time coming, but we are so

thankful that the administration has stepped up and our donors have stepped up to make it possible. It is unbelievable. It is still a little bit surreal, sometimes.”

The recent trend in Stillwater started with the donation Michael and Anne Green-

wood gave to help finance the $20-million project for a tennis center. OSU tennis had a new home in 2014 at Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, which is across the street from where the new baseball stadium will be.

“I tell people all the time that you could make an argument that we are who we are as an institution because of what Art Griffith and Ed Gallagher did as wrestling coaches here, showing that you can be the best in the whole world at something right here on our campus in Stillwater, Oklahoma,” Holder said.

As athletic director, Holder has helped continue to improve the sports scene at OSU. He said he remembers when he was coaching and the consensus was OSU didn’t have the financial means to do anything at a

high level.

“Fast-forward to today,” Holder said. “You look at the amount of money we have raised and the kind of facilities that we have built all over this campus, it is aweinspiring.”

Holder said he thinks people understand the growth and the improved sports brand throughout Stillwater.

“OSU is a special place,” Holder said. “A place where all things are possible. A place where no dreams are too big.”

the baseball news conference, Holder said he has plans, including an indoor track with the quality to host a national championship, something special for the wrestling team and a new field for the softball team.

He said the athletic department has decided to do the projects, so he said it’s inevitable they will happen.

It seemed as if wrestling was the most discussed.

Holder argued since building Gallagher Hall in 1938, OSU has done nothing for the wrestling program and has taken it for granted because it has won 34 national championships.

Holder said there’s a responsibility to the wrestling program. He said he wants

There are many unknowns for the Oklahoma State offense right now, but the running back position isn’t one of them.

The Cowboys return one of the best running backs in the country in Justice Hill, who led the Big 12 in rushing yards (1,467), rushing yards per game (112.8) and rushing touchdowns (15) last season.

rusher last season with 469 yards on 99 carries.

Brown saw spotty playing time and Hubbard redshirted, but both will be added to the mix this season.

Coach Mike Gundy feels good about his running backs, especially with the added depth the unit will have this season.

“We could be as deep

and talented at that position as anybody in the country,” Gundy said.

“When you look at what we have, if LD continues to come on and if Chuba does what we think he can do, we should be pretty good at that position and pretty deep.”

Gundy said the backup running back spot will be a running back-by-committee approach because of the different looks his guys can give opposing defenses.

“When you talk about J.D., he’s going to pound you and be fresh when you’re tired,” Gundy said. “Then you have LD and Chuba, who are sprinters, and they bring another dimension to the game. I’m excited about those guys.”

With more carries to hand out between the four, OSU won’t have to rely on Hill as much and can keep him fresh more often. Last season, Hill led the Big 12 with 268 carries. Gundy said this year he hopes to keep Hill at 16-18 carries per game and allow the other running backs to take

some of the extra hits.

Sharing carries isn’t an issue for Hill, who sees what he’s got behind him at the position.

“We all got something we bring to the table,” Hill said. “We got speed, power, we can do anything. Whoever gets their name called will be ready to go.

“It doesn’t matter to me as long as we win at the end of the day.”

Benches dedicated to carry on couple’s legacy Zach Hake news editor @ zach_hake

Marvin and Bonnie Stone might be gone, but their love for Oklahoma State University lives on.

On a cold, windy Saturday evening, hundreds of the Stones’ colleagues, friends, family and students gathered in the shadows of the Public Information building, where Bonnie worked for more than 30 years, to celebrate the dedication of two benches honoring the Stones.

The benches, which sit side by side just like Marvin and Bonnie used to, are a reminder of the couple’s lasting love and impact on OSU. The Stones died, both at 65, in the 2015 homecoming crash.

Marvin was a Regents Professor at the university for 24 years, lecturing in the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering department. He retired in 2006. A year prior, he was given OSU’s highest faculty award, the Eminent Faculty Award, according to the university.

Bonnie served as coordinator of Student Information Systems operations and training for OSU Institutional Research and Information Management, a position she assumed in 1998.

Several of the Stones’ closest friends and colleagues reflected about the impact Marvin and Bonnie had on so many.

colleague of the Stones and former head of the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering department, said it was a privilege to know the Stones from the moment they began at OSU in 1982.

“I could go on and on about Marv’s professional accomplishments, but I really just want everyone to know he made a tremendous impact, and he was literally at the top of his profession,” Elliott said. “And Bonnie was his partner in all this.

She supported and encouraged Marv every step of the way. They were a team.”

The Stones ate lunch together nearly every day, either in the Agriculture Hall where Marvin worked or in the Public Information building where Bonnie worked and where the two newly dedicated benches sit outside.

Rhoda Hughes, a senior technician at OSU’s institutional research and information management department, worked with Bonnie for more than 30 years in three different departments.

“I’m very grateful to those people who are responsible for this bench,” Hughes said.

“For a while, there was only one bench, for Bonnie, and that doesn’t really look like Bonnie and Marvin. They were always together, and they were inseparable so I’m glad to see this together.”

As Hughes held back tears, she reflected on the 30 years of friendship with Bonnie, remembering how Bonnie and Marvin attended sporting and school events to see Hughes’ two children, and how Bonnie would collect angels for Hughes from all over the country during her travels.

“I pass this bench every morning, and I say ‘Good morning,’ and at night, I say ‘Goodnight,’” Hughes said.

“She is not gone, she’s just on vacation, and I will see her someday.”
