‘Come and See’ Rev. Wakulich discusses plans for new building, hopes to attract students

By Logan Smith Staff Reporter Rev. Wakulich, Priest of the St. John’s Student Parish Center, expressed his distaste for the current state of the structure to students in an open house last Wednesday.

“Get a look at this building,” Wakulich said. “It’s kinda ugly… This building was also made to be a fallout shelter.” A common word used for the building by most who have seen it is “modest.”

Regardless of people’s opinions, the building is scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt with an entirely new design in May of this year, with plans to be finished in July of 2022.

In his tour, Wakulich uses nearby campus landmarks to describe the stature of the new church.

“See that glass structure there, on the front of the business college,” Wakulich said. “Our new bell tower is twice as tall as that.” The bell tower, the tallest part of the future project, will be 150 feet tall and 25 feet wide.

Sterling, Knowles excited about young players in the secondary

Dean Ruhl Staff Reporter Tre Sterling read the eyes of the quarterback, the route of the receiver, and jumped.

He tucked the ball, an open field in front of him, and returned the interception 65 yards for a touchdown.

It was the highlight of the safety’s season, and a high point of the surprise success the OSU defense had last season.

A success that the defense wants to replicate this season.

Sterling said he likes what he sees from the young players who are stepping up in the secondary. A secondary that will be without Rodarius Williams, who declared for the NFL draft following last season.

“The young guys are getting more reps,” Sterling said. “There’s going to be some mistakes early on, and that’s even with starters. They’re learning from their mistakes and learning their lessons, and getting better each day.”

One of those young guys? Korie Black. Knowles said Black has all the skills you’d want in a cornerback, and Sterling said he sees it too.

“The jump he’s made from last year to this year is phenomenal,” Sterling said. “The footwork he has, the speed he has and breaking on balls and routes. He definitely is balling out and chasing a (starting) spot right now.”

Returning Sterling and Kolby Harvell-Peel has helped Knowles. Along with players like Malcolm Rodriguez and Trace Ford, the defense’s veteran leaders are helping teach the defense, a defense they’ve become familiar with

over several seasons.

“I see those (veteran) guys and they’re really mentoring the young guys,” Knowles said. “I see them on the sidelines, I see them constantly talking to them whenever we do walkthroughs.”

Sterling said Knowles was one of the meanest coaches he’d ever had, but after several seasons he has relaxed more, because of how comfortable the veterans have become with the playbook.

“He’s laid back and lets us do what we do,” Sterling said. “We make plays.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

Continued from pg. 1 Not only is the size of the building project astonishing, the design choices, some unique and some copied, are ambitious as well.

“This church is, was, and still is one of the basilicas in Milan,” Wakulich said. “We’re going to take the beauty of the early Church and rebuild it here on the corner of Miller and Knoblock.” The basilica he refers to is the “Basilica di Sant’ Ambrogio,” which

was constructed in the year 387.

Aside from appearance, the current church’s functionality is also a reason for it to be rebuilt larger and grander. During his visual presentation inside the center, Wakulich explained just how crowded the schedule and small space had become.

“We have exceeded its capacity.” Wakulich said.

“We were having funerals in the church, and Thursday student lunch in here.”

The 15 foot tall “Vine and Branches” Mosaic and other art prepared for the new place is much more intricate and special than what currently exists in the church. Wakulich explains

the purpose of including this incredible art in the new church plan.

“To help people’s minds be lifted to heaven,” said Wakulich. “We can evangelize people with beauty.”

This welcoming environment to students of the Oklahoma State Stillwater campus is done in other ways besides art. The archway leading to the parish hall will have etched in stone the beatitude “when I was a stranger, you welcomed me.”

“It’s for the students” Wakulich said. “It’s going to mix with the style of brick around campus as well.” All of these concepts were created and developed

while keeping the student body involved and in mind.

The one hour open house extensively presented what is to be expected in the building, while also leaving out details for time’s sake.

“We’ve been working on this for a very long time.” Wakulich said. “If I brought you all of our drawings, it’s currently about 150 pages” The community of St. John’s hopes that the project stays on schedule for its 14-month construction, so soon students can invite their friends using the biblical phrase “come and see.” news.ed@ocolly.com

Best study spots in town students share their favorite study locations

By Addison Duling Staff Reporter With finals just around the corner, several students shared their favorite places in Stillwater and the OSU campus to hit the books.

Some students like to study on campus at places like the library or their dorm. In other cases, students prefer going to local Stillwater coffee shops or similar spots.

Mikayla Doty is a sophomore majoring in Public Health and Sociology.

She enjoys studying at The Oak. The Oak is a shake and tea bar that serves smoothies, shakes, teas and a few coffees.

“The energy of The Oak is something that makes it a great place to study. I don’t get tired when I study there,” Doty said.

Another popular study spot is Aspen Coffee, specifically the location in Fountain Square on Western Road.

Jordan Anders likes to hang out at this Aspen, often with a group of friends. Anders is a junior majoring in early childhood education.

“I like how Aspen is a place where I know I can always run into familiar faces,” Anders said. “The coffee is a definite plus, but I enjoy the atmosphere the most. It makes it easy to sit down and work for hours if that’s something I need to do.”

Although the Aspen in Fountain Square seems to be a favorite for studying, all the Aspen Coffee locations are popular places to go.

Pexels Finals are coming soon and the semester is ramping up. These study spots are a great place to focus and relax.

Balanced Coffee is also a popular, local coffee shop in Stillwater for doing schoolwork or just for hanging out.

Ivy Scharlach is a senior majoring in Psychology

whose favorite place to study is Balanced Coffee.

“I love Balanced Coffee for studying because it has an all-around great atmosphere, plenty of different areas to study alone or with

friends, and in my opinion, the best coffee in town,” Scharlach said.

Students spend time in the library, Nancy Randolph Davis building or the Student Union. On days with nice weather, people can be found working on schoolwork outside.

Kelly Lewis is a sophomore majoring in biosystems engineering who enjoys to study outdoors when she has the opportunity.

“I like to study at the circle of benches outside Bennett Hall because it is far enough from the entrance that no one walks through it and being outside to

study keeps me away from distractions,” Lewis said.

On the other hand, some students prefer studying in their own space. Keegan Cook is a student whose favorite place to study is his own home. Cook is a sophomore majoring in industrial engineering.

“I like to study at home because when I get tired I can just take a nap on my couch then get back to it,” Cook said.

With the end of the semester drawing near, many of these study spaces will be filled with hard-working students preparing for finals. Whether that is on campus, at home, or one of the local coffee shops, many places throughout Stillwater offer great study environments. entertainment.ed@ocolly.com

Jesus said if they did it to me they will do it to those who follow me.

(Jn.15:20) Many times this will separate the true believers from the false. No one likes hardships, difficulties and certainly persecutions, but the challenge comes and we don’t want to stumble and fall away.

Jesus speaks to the Smyrna church in Revelation: "I know your afflictions...slander...do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer...the Devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be careful..."

Does God allow persecution and trials of different kinds? He certainly does!

Couldn't God deliver them out of bad situations? Of course! Sometimes He will and sometimes not. He even governs how long the difficulties will last. These are times when we see the grace of God in wonderful ways. His grace is made perfect in weaknesses.

(2 Co.12:9) That is why we are not to be offended at God's ways.

Difficulties can seem to be hindering the very work of God, but the Lord is working in and through the situation to accomplish something good in the end.

8 Cowgirls were facing the No. 7 University of Louisiana at Monroe Ragin’ Cajuns.

Senior pitcher Carrie Eberle got the start looking to slow down the Ragin’ Cajun offense. Tuck and Dominguez were chanting as normal when one of them decided to pick up a chair in the dugout.

As the game went on and as Eberle continued to strike out one Ragin’ Cajun after another, the chair’s involvement grew. The catchers decided to grab the smallest Cowgirl, freshman Avery Hobson, and put her in the chair while raising and lowering it.

“It started when we would pick the smallest player on the team and make them sit in the chair,” Tuck said. “Then, we would pick them up and carry them around to make it more fun.

That’s how the whole idea got started.”

The Cowgirls secured the win in extra innings and the legend of the Strikeout Chair was born. After the game, Tuck and Dominguez carried the chair with Hobson in it out to the pitcher’s mound and placed it on the mound, chanting the entire way. Dominguez wanted to keep the Louisiana chair but much to her dismay the coaches shut down the idea because it was technically considered stealing.

“Sit her down, sit her down!” Oklahoma State junior Taylor Tuck grabs what looks to be an ordinary black folding chair and slaps her hand against it over and over. A closer look reveals the chair is painted with the same words the players are chanting, “SIT. HER. DOWN.” The words are orange and white, which with the black on the chair represent the OSU colors. This chair is no ordinary chair.

This is the Strikeout Chair.

The Strikeout Chair was born of humble beginnings.

The phrase, “Sit her down” is a dugout chant meant to encourage the pitcher to strike out the opposing batter.

Toward the end of the 2020 season, before COVID-19 shut it down, the OSU softball team began to rally around the chant. The original chant evolved to include some players yelling, “Chair” over and over. Softball dugout chants are as common as bats and gloves but rarely do props accompany them.

The idea for the chair came from Tuck and fellow catcher Raquel Dominguez.

Continued from pg. 5 looked at me and said, ‘Dude, we should totally make a chair,’” Dominguez said. “After the ULL game, we decided on coming up with ideas of what color the chair should be and how we should decorate it. We planned to carry it around with us wherever we travel.”

The next day, Tuck and Dominguez bought the materials and began transforming the regular black folding chair into the Strikeout Chair. Two K’s are painted on the seat of the chair. One forward and one backward to indicate striking out swinging and looking. The title of the chair is proudly displayed on the front, reading.

Around the edges, white and orange stripes lead to a “GO POKES” painted on the front of the seat.

Finally, the phrase “SIT. HER. DOWN.” adorns the back, which faces the pitcher when the players in the dugout want to give the pitcher a pick-me-up.

Every person is assigned an item to carry when traveling. Some are assigned to bats, some are assigned to balls or nets.

Moving forward, a specific person will have the important task of taking care of the Strikeout Chair.

“The chair is going everywhere with us,”

Dominguez said. “Someone is going to be assigned to carry it around. That will be the biggest job anyone has right now.”

OSU is known for its loose style under coach Kenny Gajewski. The Cowgirls gained national attention during the 2019 season with senior pitcher Samantha Show and her bat flips. Gajewski said he wants the players to have fun and be themselves. The Strikeout Chair is a perfect example of the fun the Cowgirls play with and the joyous atmosphere present in the dugout.

“We have always played here in a different way,” Gajewski said. “We always have played with a certain swag.”

The chair’s magic applies only when the Cowgirls are on defense. Some people assume the Strikeout Chair is for players to sit in when they strike out, similar to a punishment.

The opposite is true, and the chair represents where the opponents should hypothetically sit when they strike out. Dominguez said the batters do not want the chair out when they step up to the plate.

“We close the chair when we are up to bat and hide it,” Dominguez said.

“We don’t want to strike out. We don’t want to jinx ourselves. We don’t want that bad ‘juju.’”

Baseball and softball players are known to be superstitious and methodical.

Tuck has a special routine of putting on her uniform the same way every time.

She started in high school and never changed the method. Dominguez has to drink a “Blue Razz” BANG energy drink throughout every game.

Superstition is a part of the game, and the mystique of the strikeout chair fits right in.

The real question is, “Does it really work?”

Tuck and Dominguez said it does. Dominguez said it gives the pitchers a sense of calm and fires up those in the dugout who are cheering their teammates.

“I think it helps the pitchers get loosened up on the mound,” Dominguez said. “I talked to Carrie [Eberle] and Kelly [Maxwell] and they said, ‘I can hear what you guys are saying in the dugout and it makes us laugh inside.

I feel like you guys are always right there, every single pitch right behind us.’

“It makes the people in the dugout feel good too because it makes us feel like we are out there with the pitchers cheering them on. With us making and bringing out this chair it makes everything fun. We always have fun in the dugout, but the chair and the person in it really gives the pitchers a sense of calm.”

Tuck’s parents, Kenny and Julie Tuck, were witnesses to the creation of the chair. They remember Tuck and Dominguez bringing the materials to their house and begin to paint the chair. Kenny Tuck, a former travel team softball coach, said Ga-

jewski’s style of coaching gives the players a greater sense of freedom.

“Gajewski’s style of coaching lets them be who they are and have fun,” Kenny Tuck said. “He doesn’t put restrictions and he doesn’t want them to be robots. Coach G. says, ‘If you are having fun, then it creates energy. So, have at it.’”

Usually during a softball game the greatest amount of chanting and cheering occurs when a team is on offense. The team is in the dugout and able to cheer the batter.

Chanting on defense is lessened because of the reduced number of players able to cheer. Taylor Tuck said the chair allows the team to cheer for something specific on defense and gives the team energy the whole game, not only on offense.

“I think the chair helps the players who are not on the field playing,” Julie Tuck said. “It helps when you have a purpose to cheer on your teammates. When you have something special like the chair every game, everyone gets excited and buys in.”

OSU is No. 6 and has one goal: make the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Strikeout Chair is guaranteed to be there if the Cowgirls make it.

“Gajewski’s style of coaching lets them be who they are and have fun,” Kenny Tuck said. “He doesn’t put restrictions and he doesn’t want them to be robots. Coach G. says, ‘If you are having fun, then it creates energy. So, have at it.’”

Usually during a softball game the greatest amount of chanting and cheering occurs when a team is on offense. The team is in the dugout and able to cheer the batter.

Chanting on defense is lessened because of the reduced number of players able to cheer. Taylor Tuck said the chair allows the team to cheer for something specific on defense and gives the team energy the whole game, not only on offense.

“I think the chair helps the players who are not on the field playing,” Julie Tuck said. “It helps when you have a purpose to cheer on your teammates. When you have something special like the chair every game, everyone gets excited and buys in.”

OSU is No. 6 and has one goal: make the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Strikeout Chair is guaranteed to be there if the Cowgirls make it.
