SGA elections begin on Tuesday Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

Weeks of campaigning, dozens of signs and two debates have led to the Student Government Association elections this week.

Students can vote online via elections.okstate.edu or at the Chi-O Clock polling station on Tuesday and Wednesday, where members of SGA will hand out Chick-Fil-A sandwiches to voters. The SGA President and senators representing living groups such as OffCampus Student Association and the Residence Hall Association will be up for election.

Chance Imhoff, Kyle Hilbert and Mason Taylor are on the ballot for president. All three candidates have stressed similar issues throughout the campaign, primarily increasing student involvement and participation in SGA. Imhoff and his running mate, Jacquelyn Lane, have campaigned on a proposed branding campaign to increase awareness about SGA. They’ve also expressed

support for student diversity training and extended service hours for the Colvin Center and University Dining Services.

Hilbert and Taylor Dennis are motivated to promote tradition at Oklahoma State, posing the question, “What is Oklahoma State without athletics?” Hilbert wants to partner with the OSU Alumni Association for a project called the Cowboy Legend, essentially a book of traditions to serve as a guide for incoming freshmen.

Hilbert also campaigned for extended Student SelfServices, or SIS hours, online and increasing awareness about student benefits all students pay for, but few take advantage of.

Taylor and David Hidinger are built on transparency in all aspects of SGA. The two have promoted a more active social media campaign for SGA for student accessibility.

Taylor also intends to pursue greater student involvement with the organization, as well as giving the SGA judicial branch investigative abilities in order to police constitutional violations. news@ocolly.com

Column: Why you should vote in student government elections Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

Student Government Association is every student’s representation to the administration and beyond, and its elections will be held this week for president and living group senators.

For every student at OSU, these should be incredibly important for more than one reason. It all comes back to representation.

On a national scale, everyone has probably heard the phrase: “Voting is

your license to complain,” or some variation of it. If there’s something you don’t like or want to change, you call your representative.

Well, the same can be said for SGA at OSU. OSU isn’t perfect, and anyone who goes here knows that. SGA represents every student to the administration, and it works to help student concerns and solve problems within the university.

If there is a problem on campus, talk to someone in student government. The door is always open on the second floor of the Student Union, and every one of them, from the president

down to interns, will help find a solution.

Want less empty staff parking and more available student parking? SGA can help with that.

Want expanded on-campus dining hours? SGA can help with that.

Want some help funding your student organization’s trip? Guess what? SGA can help with that.

Collision kills 3 people Friday evening Kaelynn Knoernschild @kaelynn_k

Three individuals are dead after a man reportedly ran a stop sign early Friday evening.

The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. at 68th Street and Bush Creek Road, which is three miles south of Stillwater.

Justin Layne Rollins, 22, of Tryon, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Chevrolet pickup headed south on Bush Creek Road when he reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup on the

passenger’s side, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol collision report.

Rollins, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was transported to OU Medical Center in critical condition with unknown injuries, the report states.

Passenger Joshua Clint Rollins, 23, of Perkins, was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. Another passenger, Dustin Hughes, 23, of Perkins, was wearing a seatbelt and refused treatment.

So let us keep after our calling to bless. “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Pet.3:9 NIV) “Make the most of every opportunity.”(Col.4:5) Sometimes the opportunity may take the form of some practical help we can give.

Other times it may be the opportunity to “share the reason of our hope in Christ;” what Christ means to us personally. (1 Pet.3:15) It is an opportunity to share the reality of your faith. Make the most of it!

It may take the form of a prayer request for a specific need. It is good to stop right then, pray and encourage that person. Let’s take advantage of every opportunity.

There has always been talk about the Sigma Alpha Epsilon plantation balls on our campus, but I had never seen any proof of it. I thought it had been put to rest, especially after recent events.

While waiting for food at Café 88 last Thursday, I noticed a group of OSU students standing in front of my table. Among them was a female student wearing a light green T-shirt I could read clearly from across the room.

It read “2014 Sigma Alpha Epsilon Plantation Ball” in bold letters with a picture of a cotton plant. Underneath it were the words “Oklahoma

State University.”

I was shocked anyone would even think to wear such a shirt after the University of Oklahoma’s SAE chapter received national attention for reciting a racist chant.

My heart dropped. I was disappointed. I was even more ashamed to see our university’s name on it. It was as if OSU supported it. I am a part of OSU. I thought to myself, “Is this what OSU stands for? Is this what we stand for?” I couldn’t believe it. I approached her to ask her what the shirt meant.

“SAE always has Plantation,” she said. “It’s always been a thing. That’s what the shirt is for. It’s like any other date party.”

conversation and said the date parties are now “jungle-” or “safari-” themed. As if that’s better.

The local chapter referred

me to James Conrady, house corporation president. In a phone interview he said the local chapter’s Plantation Ball did exist. Conrady said

that every year, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity holds the three-day date party called “the Plantation Ball” during the last week of April.

According to an article from The Oklahoman, dozens of black OSU students marched to protest similar activities leading up to the Plantation Ball in April 1987. SAE members at the time issued a formal apology to the black students and said they would take whatever action necessary to avoid a repeat of the “regrettable” incident, but not enough changed, according to a Daily Mail article.

The Daily Mail wrote an article that said Confederate flags are displayed on the front of the fraternity

house leading up to the ball to reflect southern pride. The article quoted a former OSU SAE member who described past instances of pledges having to dress in black face and pick cotton on the front lawn on the same day of the ball.

In an email interview, OSU Communications Director Gary Shutt said the local SAE chapter recently dropped the name “Plantation Ball” and renamed it “The Phoenix Ball.” He also said there are no new Plantation Ball shirts in production.

“The local SAE leadership should be commended for taking this positive step,” Shutt said.

Assistant professor at OSU creates poetic fiction Savannah Evanoff @SavannahEvanoff

Amidst the dimly lit halls of Morrill is a gently sunlit office, one from which arises a literary voice that has won awards for being poetically haunting.

The literary voice of Aimee Parkison.

Parkison, assistant creative fiction director at Oklahoma State, has summoned a full-tuition scholarship to a graduate program at Cornell University, received several fellowships and won the Starcherone Prize for innovative fiction.

“I enjoy working with language almost like a poet does,” Parkison said.

When Parkison puts pen to paper, it is no longer just a pastime, like drinking her favorite gourmet teas or engaging in an episode of “Mad Men,” as she sometimes does.

For Parkison, writing is her line of work and her passion — an experience where words flow through her and appear fluidly in a notebook or on a com-

puter screen. Her writing can be inspired by virtually anything — including tarot cards, surrealist word games and, most importantly, her surroundings.

“Much of my inspiration comes from journaling,” Parkison said. “It feeds my art.”

For Parkison, the years of 1995-2000 hold intimate memories of studying in the browsing room of Edmon Low library and reading in the cozy rooms of the sky-rise dorms.

“The creative writing program at OSU was where I first got really good feedback from my professors and peers,” Parkison said. “That was where I first started to realize I could actually become a writer.”

Parkison said the strong background she developed from OSU prepared her to receive a talent-based scholarship from the competitive graduate school of Cornell University.

“I had a lot of fun in graduate school, but I also worked really hard,” Parkison said. “It was a dream come true.”

After teaching many years at universities including Cornell University and

the University of North Carolina, Parkison now teaches fiction writing as an assistant professor at OSU. “It’s something that constantly surprises me because I never know what someone is going to turn in,” Parkison said. “I love it.”

Ashton Patton, an English sophomore, works with Parkison in the OSU online literary magazine Frontier Mosaic, and is in a creative writing class.

“She is very supportive,” Patton said. “I feel like she’s invested in my work.”

THE WORKS Parkison has spun poetic webs of fiction in three main pieces of published literature: “Woman with the Dark Horses,” “The Innocent Party,” and her most recent work, “The Petals of Your Eyes.”

In 2004, Parkison’s “Woman with the Dark Horses,” manuscript of short stories, was selected as the first Starcherone Prize in innovative fiction after a blind reading.

“She has been loyal both to me personally and to Starcherone Books,” Pelton said. “We have been proud to claim her and her beautiful, brave writing as one of the shining lights of what Starcherone has been all about.”

Through her first book, Parkison was able to begin developing an audience, including supporter of

Starcherone Books and fan of Parkison’s work, Peter Conners.

“Aimee’s work was a quintessential Starcherone selection— experimental, intelligent, a little dark, full of surprises,” Conners said.

Connors says Parkison is on his radar as a young fiction writer he wants to follow.

“Her scope seems to have broadened without losing

any of her writer’s edge,” Conners said.

STILLWATER GIRL In the summer of 2013, Parkison won the creative artist fellowship for the American Antiquarian Society, which funded her current novel project regarding home life after the Civil War.

After 27 innings in two days, the Texas Longhorns had little energy left, and Michael Freeman made sure they left Stillwater with an empty tank.

Oklahoma State’s senior left-hander went eight innings Sunday as the Cowboys defeated Texas 8-3, their first series sweep of the Longhorns since 2008.

The win also gave OSU sole possession of first place in the Big 12.

Freeman finished an inning short of his third straight complete game for the No. 11 Cowboys (22-9, 7-2) and has a 1.04 ERA in three conference starts.

With Freeman on the mound, the Cowboys were able to relax in the box. Conor Costello drove in a run for the fourth straight game, reaching on a fielder’s choice as Tim Arakawa scored in the bottom of the first.

“It gives you a lot of confidence whenever guys can pick you up like that,” Freeman said. “I made some mistakes and let guys touch home plate, and those guy have my back. It’s a great feeling knowing it’s

not all on me.”

The Cowboys will go for a fourth straight win Tuesday in a nonconference game against Oklahoma.

But after 36 innings against the Longhorns, Holliday is just thinking about rest for himself and his players.

A season ago, the Cowboys and the Oklahoma Sooners played 18 in a

nonconference game, with the Sooners winning 12-9.

I sat through all 18 innings of that game, and I

was there for all 18 Friday.

How does that even happen? In OSU baseball’s 103-year history

prior to last season, the longest game in program history was 15 innings, done three times. Suddenly, in back-to-back seasons, the program has seen two games take twice as long as scheduled.

Still, that’s almost what makes them so interesting, so exciting. Nine innings is routine. It’s expected.

When there are 18 innings, it’s a whole new ballgame, literally.

So much happened in those 6 hours and 53 minutes that it’s difficult for me to recall all of the amazing moments and facets of the game that grabbed my attention. But I’ll try.

History: Oklahoma State played its second 18-inning game in as many seasons Friday.

From Page 8 • The longest game in NCAA Division I history took 25 innings and also featured Texas. It came in the 2009 NCAA Austin Regional against Boston College, and even though it took seven more innings, it only lasted about 10 more minutes at 7 hours and 3 minutes.

If Hassel didn’t end the game in the 18th, the Cowboys were essentially guaranteed to be involved with the longest game in Division I history. Still, it

was certainly the longest game in OSU history.

• Speaking of Hassel, what he did Friday night was incredible. His first at-bat of the game came in the second inning. He singled, scoring on a home run by Kevin Bradley.

Over his next six at-bats, he went hitless, including the 12th inning, when he grounded out with the bases loaded. He spent the first 15 innings out in cold, lonely center field before taking over as the Cowboys’ pitcher, making just the third pitching appearance of his career.

He struck out three and gave up one hit. Then, in the bottom of the 18th with two on, he smashed a pitch over the left-field wall to end the game,

making himself the winning pitcher.

• To be the winning pitcher and hit a walk-off home run sounds like a rare feat, huh? Actually, it just happened the night before, when Jacob Evans of Oklahoma hit a walkoff shot in the 10th inning against Kansas.

• Hassel wasn’t the only star reliever for OSU. Carson LaRue settled things down with 3 2/3 innings of great relief, while Kyle Bagnell outdid himself.

The senior left-hander went 3 2/3 innings, as many as he had thrown all season to that point, with six strikeouts. Both numbers were career-highs for Bagnell, who now has pitched 7 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts this season,

which are also careerhighs.

• Texas batters struck out 20 times, while OSU batters were sat down 19 times.

• It’s amazing to me how similar this game was to last year’s. The Cowboys rallied in the ninth, both teams went scoreless for eight innings, and suddenly, one team scored three runs and it was over.

But the Bedlam game only lasted 5 hours and 52 minutes. That might be my most inappropriate use of the word “only” in my life.

• Both teams wasted a lot of opportunities, going a combined 6-for-40 with runners in scoring position. Before Hassel’s home run, OSU was 2-for-19.

That’s a .105 average.

This game really could’ve been over a lot sooner, but what’s the fun in that?

• There were too many mound visits, pitching changes and pickoffs to first to count, likely the factors for the amount of time this game took. Interestingly, the two teams combined to use, well, 18 pitchers.

• Laughter. There was a lot of laughter.

• In the press box at Allie P., there is free popcorn and drinks. Right around the time extra innings began, the popcorn machine was emptied out and the fridge with the drinks was locked up. There was quite a bit of hunger going around, and a fan was nice enough to order us

a pizza, even though the fans out in the cold probably deserved it more than we did. Either way, thanks for that.

• On that same note, it was so great to see how many fans stuck through the game from the first inning on. It might’ve even been cooler to see the fans who came to Allie P. during extra innings, wanting to be a part of what we are all watching. A lot of people stayed up much later than they intended, myself included, but I don’t think any of us would change that experience.
