Oklahoma State University’s Department of Theatre will open “Spitfire Grill,” its fourth and final production of this school year Thursday.

Theater freshman Emily Frerich will perform in her second OSU show as Percy Talbott, a spirited young woman recently released from prison who spends the musical trying to forget her past while working at a diner and earning the forgiveness of others and herself.

“Spitfire Grill” will offer music that director Peter Westerhoff describes as an “intimate, subdued, not overly splashy, country-esque folk blend.”

Thomas Neely, a violin performance junior, said he has enjoyed the nontraditional pit orchestra in the show.

“This one’s been different because we’re usually down in the pit, but we’re actually on stage in this one,” Neely said.

“So we have to maintain composure and get our own costumes. We’re getting to sit on stage, on stumps, which is a little different. We’re a lot closer than usual to the singers, so it’s a little bit more inclusive.”

The stage reflects this with a diner scene in the mountains and a group of tree stumps in the corner for the four-person orchestra.

The Department of Theatre recruited Megan Barth, a collaborative pianist and voice coach at Oklahoma City University, to serve as the music director and accompanist for the production.

Having Barth at OSU “has been a great experience,” Neely said.

“The plot definitely seems plausible and enjoyable,” Neely said.

“I like OSU’s twist on it, as well. It’s a little bit funnier and more energetic for sure. I don’t know what people should expect because it’s still a surprise to me, too.”

“My experience so far with the show has been very good,” Varner said.

“Wardrobe is definitely the most stressful just ’cause there’s a lot of moving and there’s a lot going on at once. I definitely have to pay attention.”

Peyton Meacham, a theater senior, will play Effie Krayneck, the postmistress and town gossip.

Meacham is on her third show in the Vivia Locke Theatre and said each one has taken effort but “Spitfire Grill” is different because it’s a “very real” story.

“We’ve been working very, very hard for a very long time, so it’s gonna be nice to finally have people see the magic we’ve been working so hard to get,” Meacham said. “It takes a lot to build that illusion.”

Meacham said working with Westerhoff has given her an opportunity to gain experience with a “fantastic” director.

Westerhoff has directed more than 80 productions during his tenure at OSU, where he now serves as the head of performance for the Department of Theatre.

Westerhoff said this year’s musical is “vastly different” from what the theater has done in the past, mostly because of its musical style and sentimentality.

“It’s a very optimistic, uplifting, positive story on forgiveness about a past that has gone very wrong and an optimistic future,” Westerhoff said.

Audience members should be ready to experience a wide range of emotions when they come to see the show, Westerhoff said.

“People should be able to settle in and really enjoy it,” Westerhoff said.

“I hope that they will laugh until they cry and cry until they laugh.”

After many runthroughs and long rehearsals, Meacham and Westerhoff said the cast is prepared for Thursday’s opening and will put on a great show for people who attend.

“Everyone in (the green) room is working so hard, and it’s gonna be great,” Meacham said.

“It’s worth the watch, and it’s gonna be awesome.”

The Red Dirt Relief Fund is bringing a taste of red dirt music to Stillwater with its annual songwriter festival, Gypsy Café.

Gypsy Café will be Wednesday from 4:20-11:45 p.m. Songwriters are paired together to play acoustic sets at Eskimo Joe’s, George’s Stables and Stonewall Tavern. The lineup consists of about 70 Oklahoma songwriters along with well-known artists Jimmy LaFave, Stoney LaRue and John Fullbright. The festival is meant to honor Bob

Childers, also known as the godfather of red dirt music.

Katie Dale, Red Dirt Relief Fund’s executive director, said the event takes place in Stillwater to celebrate the place where red dirt music grew up.

“Really if you go back and talk to anyone who works in that scene or in that genre, they all pretty much agree Stillwater is where it happened,” Dale said.

Dale said several entertainers used to get together at what they called the Gypsy Café, a garage still standing in Stillwater, to write and play music. She said the festival was named after Childers, a songwriter

and mentor to many musicians and an active face at the Gypsy Café.

This festival will be the first to present the Restless Spirit award. The organization created the award to honor a musician who has impacted the Oklahoma music community similarly to how Childers did.

“This year we are honoring Jimmy LaFave who, in a similar way, has inspired and collaborated with musicians,” Dale said. “He was actually a friend of Bob Childers when Bob was still living.”

Musician Kaitlin Butts is one of many Gypsy Café performers. She said the

overwhelming inclusiveness and kindness the red dirt community displayed immediately inspired her.

Butts is from Tulsa and has been singing since she was 5. At 15, Butts said she decided to begin writing songs. She released her first album, “Same Hell, Different Devil,” three years ago with Mike McClure.

Butts describes her music as Americana Country with a focus on the roots of country music. She said she got involved in Gypsy Café when the Red Dirt Relief Fund contacted her college’s music program about possible musicians to perform at the festival.

“No one tries to create an image,” Butts said. “Everyone that writes music and plays in the scene… you can tell that their music is simply them. They’re not trying to be someone else.”

Butts said she didn’t know anyone during her first year as a Gypsy Café performer.

However, she said she now knows almost everyone and is excited to host a stage at this year’s festival.

“I’m excited to see my friends and have a full day of music that I love to listen to,” Butts said. “It’s a good time, a good cause, really good songwriters and just an overall good day.”

Tickets are $25 the day of

the festival and can be purchased at will call in an Airstream trailer on Elm Street across from Eskimo Joe’s.

Will call opens at 11 a.m. on festival day, and Oklahoma State University students who purchase tickets at the gate will receive $5 off with a student ID. Tickets are also available for a prepurchase of $20.

A Stillwater woman is spreading her love of music, one ukulele at a time.

Kami Koontz visits local schools, libraries and businesses giving away free ukuleles from the Stillwater Ukulele Association.

Koontz founded the organization in 2014 and began Ukuleles in Schools and the Public Ukulele Movement. The goal of these initiatives is to donate ukuleles to expose more people to music.

Daddy O’s Music Co. sponsors the Stillwater Ukulele Association and is a contributor to Ukuleles in Schools.

“We just really like having music in the school systems and seeing that flourish because oftentimes that’s the first area to get cut in a lot of school systems,” said Hayden Harris from Daddy O’s Music Co. “We just want to see music and

So far, with help from Amahi Ukuleles, Hal Leonard Publishing, Stillwater Arts and Humanities Council, and

Daddy O’s Music Co., the Stillwater Ukulele Association has donated 220 ukuleles to 19 schools, four ukuleles to local businesses and five ukulele kits to libraries.

The libraries have a “Take it, Play it” program in which ukulele kits can be checked out and returned about two weeks later. Koontz donated the ukulele kits, which include a ukulele with a padded gig bag, a song

book and the same book Koontz used when she was learning how to play.

Koontz said she has one ukulele left and hopes to put it on the Oklahoma State University campus somewhere.

The Stillwater Ukulele Association hosts meetings the first and third Tuesday of each month at Daddy O’s Music Co. At the beginning of each meeting, instructors hold a beginner’s lesson, so experience playing the ukulele or reading music isn’t necessary. Daddy O’s lends ukuleles for the meetings in case attendees don’t already own

one.

Koontz said the meetings are inclusive to people of all skill levels and ages.

“It’s the safest, most supportive environment,” she said. “It’s such a community.”

Blayne Mayfield, an OSU computer science professor, has been a part of the association since its beginning.

“It can be intimidating when you’re starting something like playing a musical instrument to going to a group that’s already established,” he said. “This is very beginner friendly, and we have

beginners to what I’d call experts.”

Koontz said she wants to get word out to encourage more college students to join. Ultimately, she said she hopes to motivate people to try the ukulele.

“Even if people decide to just try us out and then decide to buy one and just pop in on occasion and learn on their own, it doesn’t matter to me,” Koontz said. “I just think the more people playing the ukulele, the better.”

As the temperature begins to heat up in Stillwater, so does the competition between two popular snow cone stands.

Trailer Trash Treatz has been a prominent snow cone stand on Main Street and Elm Avenue since April of last year. A new stand, though, will stake its claim this summer and create some friendly competition.

Josh’s Sno Shack opened a snow cone stand on Hall of Fame in the Food Pyramid parking lot in Stillwater last week.

Trailer Trash Treatz is a mobile snow cone stand that prides itself on its gourmet shaved ice and various toppings, including ice cream, fresh strawberries, candy and cheesecake.

“We aren’t a typical snow cone stand,” Wickersham said. “We have a lot of different flavors and offer different and creative toppings. You won’t find anything like our stand. We take pride in our different variations that we have to offer.”

Josh’s Sno Shack has seven locations all around the Tulsa area.

It has a variety of snow cone flavors that can be found only at Josh’s.

Some of these flavors include Center of the Universe, Dragon Slayer and Love on the Rocks.

Josh’s has four snow cone sizes starting with the smallest size at $1.50.

Austin Anderson is the owner of Josh’s Sno Shack in Stillwater and said he believes the new location will do well in this new area.

“We’re going to do great,” Anderson said.

“We already have a huge following from Tulsa.”

Anderson said he isn’t trying to compete with Trailer Trash Treatz and hopes both snow cone stands do well this summer.

“We offer a different product than them,” Anderson said. “They put other desserts and fancy toppings on their snow cones, and we really just focus on the snow cone itself. We really focus on our ice and try to make it as soft as possible.”

Anderson said Josh’s Sno Shack’s goal is to give residents and visitors another fun place to hang out with friends and make new summer memories.

“It is more than just soft ice,” Anderson said.

Samantha Lazarowicz said Josh’s Sno Shack is her favorite snow shack by far.

“I love Josh’s because their snow cones taste incredible,” Lazarowicz said. “Their ice is perfectly shaved, and they have so many options and flavors. And they use a ton of syrup, so it’s almost like an icee instead of a snow cone.”
