Suspended over the smoky set in the Vivia Locke Theatre on Wednesday night was a marquee light reading “Cabaret,” the title of a spring musical presented by the Oklahoma State University Theatre.

“Forget your troubles,” said the Master of Ceremonies, or Emcee, portrayed by Paul Knapp, a theater junior.

“In here, life is beautiful.”

The Master of Ceremonies hosted the musical, coming on stage between scenes with sexually liberated body language and comic relief.

“It was the most out-there role I’ve ever played,” Knapp said. “It was a blast.”

Despite the Master of Ceremonies’ introductory statement, things were far from beautiful.

Although the Kit Kat Klub, the night club portrayed by the cast, was glamorous and seductive, it was 1930 in Berlin and the Nazi party was beginning to

overtake Germany.

Many of the actors including Lacy Delaino, a master’s student in theatre who portrayed Frau Schneider, expressed a challenge in portraying such a controversial time in Germany’s history.

“I have no idea what it’s like to be in a war-torn country,” Delaino said. “It was tough playing someone 30 years older with a German accent.”

The provocative dance numbers of the Kit Kat Klub unraveled two separate love stories. One was between a boarding house owner Frau Schneider and an older Herr Schultz, portrayed by Chuck Lester. The other was between sultry cabaret performer Sally Bowles, portrayed by Kash Clemishire, and an American novelist Cliff Bradshaw, portrayed by Jacob Brockunier.

Delaino said she enjoyed developing the onstage romance between her character, Schneider, and Herr Schultz.

“I’ve never been married or had a child, so these kinds of situations are hard to adapt to,” Brockunier said.

“It was difficult to delve

Carrie Hudson, a human development and family science sophomore, said it was her first time seeing an OSU show, and she was very impressed.

“I thought it was great, particularly the chair dance,” Hudson said, referring to a seductive dance number utilizing chairs as set pieces.

Opening night culminated in a powerful finale where several performers surrounded by smoke were singing melodic notes in front of a red backdrop and large black swastika.

period,” Stukenborg said. “It was very visually stimulating.”

Bradley Gray, a theater junior, said he loved the aesthetic appeal and the performance.

SGA votes to recommend mandatory diversity training for incoming freshmen Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

Oklahoma State University Student Government Association’s final senate meeting of the semester saw a vote for mandatory diversity training for incoming freshmen.

The recommendation to the administration authored by Senator Jeremiah Murray recommended incoming freshmen take diversity training during orientation.

The legislation was the second diversity requirement Murray has written this semester, the first recommending diversity training for faculty and staff.

Murray said the legislation is intended to help prevent an incident similar to the OU SAE scandal from occurring at OSU. “In order to curb that problem and ensure that problem didn’t happen at OSU’s campus,” Murray

said. “I just went ahead and wrote the legislation to ensure that OSU has touched all their bases and done all they can do to be well trained in diversity.”

Heavy debate preceded the bill in the senate as to whether the diversity training was actually needed, and narrowly passed by a vote of 22-21.

Murray said he wasn’t surprised by the close vote.

“It’s easy to vote on things that are a good idea for others,” Murray said. “But as far as when it comes to having students either take another course or take extra hours or add any kind of extra work that they have to do, of

course they’re going to be more questioning about that and more reserved about that.”

Opponents of the bill expressed concern about the necessity of the training and a belief the bill was too ambiguous.

Off Campus Student Association Senator Jeremiah Taylor said he

voted against the bill because it wasn’t specific on how the training would be implemented.

“I felt that it was too ambiguous at the moment,” Taylor said. “It didn’t have enough true substance behind the curriculum that was going to be implemented or how it would be implemented.

“If I would have seen it begin with an actual detailed explanation about what was going to take place and how, I would have voted yes.”

Murray said as far as the written legislation goes, it can seem ambiguous.

“But to the people involved like the chairs of faculty council, diversity council, and me working with it, even and now with an amendment it should be pretty clear that we would like to standardize the College of Arts and Science and CASNR’s freshmen orientation classes, especially their two week period dealing on this topic,” he said.

The final senate meeting of the year also saw the approval of PresidentElect Kyle Hilbert’s executive cabinet, and committee chair elections for senate.

“Ex Machina” may have initially opened in less than a handful of theaters, but its reception has been overwhelmingly positive.

Thankfully, the rest of us won’t have to wait much longer, for the film gets its wide release this weekend.

Longtime screenwriter Alex Garland’s (“Dredd,” “28 Days Later”) directorial debut follows Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at his world’s equivalent to Google. The young coder wins a competition to spend

a week at the mountain retreat of the company’s enigmatic CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac).

Nathan quickly reveals the true purpose behind Caleb’s visit, though, and selects him to participate in a groundbreaking experiment. The Internet tycoon not only created the world’s first artificial intelligence, but also housed it inside a beautiful robot woman (Alicia Vikander).

You know where this is going, right? Caleb must evaluate this AI’s human qualities; from there, I’m sure, the situation will just get stranger.

The ramifications of artificial intelligence have become well-trodden ground

Many of the cast members from “Pitch Perfect” return, but Elizabeth Banks takes over the director’s seat to put her own spin on the franchise. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Hailee Steinfeld and follows a collegiate acapella group called the Barden Bellas as they enter an international competition that’s never had an American winner.

Even though Banks is taking over as director, she stars as Gail in the two films, which means she has a great sense of what made the first film so successful with critics and fans.

The sequel should play out much like the first. The plot will be the classic musical formula, but the star power and moving musical numbers will win over most viewers.

Cowgirls competing for Big 12 title in San Antonio Nicklaus Ramsey @NickRamsey32

The Oklahoma State Cowgirl golf team travels to San Antonio as the favorite to win the 2015 Big 12 Championship.

The championship will be played at Dominion Country Club, April 24-26.

The Cowgirls won two tournaments in the spring and beat Oklahoma in the Bedlam Cup. Golfweek.com has the Cowgirls ranked at No. 9, the highest-ranked team in the Big 12.

Entering the Big 12 Championship, four Cowgirls are ranked in the top 150: Maddie McCrary (No. 33), Linnea Johansson (No. 69), Kenzie Neisen (No. 76) and Isabella Deilert (No. 141).

Johansson, Neisen, Broze and Deilert have finished in the top 10 once this spring.

Baylor, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Kansas and Kansas State will also compete in San Antonio.

Golfweek.com ranks Baylor No. 20, and it bested the Cowgirls early in the season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.

Three of the five Cowgirls — McCrary, Niesen and Broze — competing in San Antonio are freshmen, part of the nation’s top freshman class this season.

Each brings their own unique story and reason for playing at OSU. MADDIE MCCRARY McCrary started golf at FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2015

“My neighbors had some plastic golf clubs outside in the front yard and I just wanted to try it,” McCrary said. “I was really good at it and my parents put me in a Spring Break camp, and I was about 5-years-old.”

Former Tour professional Rick Woodson has mentored McCrary since she first picked up that plastic golf club. Woodson ran the Spring Break camp that McCrary attended as a 5-year-old.

Woodson and McCrary have worked together since.

KENZIE NIESEN Neisen came to OSU after playing golf at New Prague High School in New Prague, Minnesota.

Neisen won the Minnesota Women’s State Match Play Championship in 2014 and was the Minnesota Class 3A State Champion in 2013 and 2014.

Growing up, Neisen was most influenced by longtime swing coach Chris Baisch.

“I’ve been with him for a really long time,” Neisen said. “He’s good family friend of ours, too. And he’s been a good mentor for me growing up, not just with golf but with everything in life, too.”

Neisen decided she wanted to play college golf in the Midwest.

“I love the environment here,” Neisen said. “I’m from a small town and it kinda feels homie here for me. And I love the golf course. I feel like we kinda get spoiled out here, it’s

so nice.”

EMMA BROZE Broze traveled 4,955 miles from Nervieux, France, to play golf for the Cowgirls.

Cowgirl coach Courtney Jones first saw Broze compete in the Germany for the European Team Championships, where Broze helped lead France to victory. Broze also won the German Ladies Stroke Play Championship.

Broze was ranked 81st by the European Golf Rankings.

Early on in the recruiting process, Jones said it was difficult to communicate with Broze.

“It’s interesting,” Jones said. “When we first started recruiting her, we weren’t able to write or communicate with her. Her English has progressed a lot throughout the recruiting process.”

Since first being recruited, Broze has played in Florida, England and Spain.

“It was a fun recruiting process with Emma,” Jones said. “She has developed a ton, and she has an unbelievable work ethic.”

McCrary, Neisen, Emma Broze, Johansson and Deilert will compete for Oklahoma State. The first round will start April 24.

The Cowgirls have an uncertain future ahead of them at the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas.

No. 11 Oklahoma State once again dropped in the rankings. Last week, OSU was at No. 10. In the Big 12, OSU (20-4, 7-2 Big 12) ended the season tied for second with Texas Tech, and is seeded third in the conference tournament this weekend.

“Our goal is to win this tournament,” Cowgirl coach Chris Young said. “We have played in the finals the last two years, and we have a goal of taking it one step further.”

No. 16 Viktoriya Lushkova maintained her singles ranking position, staying strong going into the Big 12 Championships.

No. 97 Vladica Babic, a freshman, had a great ending to the season, moving up six spots from the week before.

“Kansas is a dangerous team,” Young said. “They have one player who was injured the last time we played and so they will be at full strength and we will need to be ready to play from the beginning.”

College baseball enters its final few weeks of the regular season, but the race for the Big 12 title is still tight.

Oklahoma State is tied with Oklahoma at the top of the Big 12 standings with a 10-5 conference record. The Cowboys defeated the Sooners 24-2 earlier in the season in a nonconference matchup.

Texas Tech and TCU are also within two games of the conference lead, so there is still a long way to go before a winner is crowned.

No. 9 OSU travels to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend to take on No. 18 Texas Tech in a pivotal three-game series. The Cowboys are seeking their fifth league series win, but wins against the Red Raiders won’t come easily, for they are 8-3 in their past 11 games.

TTU also defends its territory well with a 19-6 home record this season, while OSU is 4-7 in away games, winning only one conference series on the road. The Cowboys will have to find a way to win in a hostile environment if they want to hold their share of the Big 12 lead.

The Cowboys enter play this weekend with a .287 team batting average, and shortstop Donnie Walton has been a huge part of the Cowboys’ offensive success recently.

Shortstop Donnie Walton is hitting .461 in the past 10 games.

Walton is scorching hot at the plate right now, batting .461 in his last 10 ballgames. After suffering a wrist injury early in the season, Walton seems to be hitting his stride at the perfect time for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys will need Walton’s bat this weekend as the TTU pitching staff owns a collective 3.24 ERA, including five hurlers with sub 3.00 ERAs. Right-hander Corey Taylor is one of the best the Red Raiders has to offer.

Pitching as reliever and starter, Taylor has posted a microscopic 0.36 ERA over 50 innings of work and is one of the best pitchers the Big 12 has to offer this season.
