Don’t be a drag. Just be a queen.

These were the sassy lyrics lip-synched by this year’s winner of the ninth annual Oklahoma State Dragonfly drag show, drag queen Man-lificent, also known as Timothy Green.

“I can tell you that tonight I almost didn’t come here because I was so scared,” Man-lificent said.

“But we are here, we are queer and we accept you, so why don’t you accept us?”

After hours of getting ready, pasting on fake eyelashes and wrapping their bodies tightly in nylon, the performers transformed the Student Union Theater into a Candyland-themed club, complete with rave music and pride for the LGBT community.

“It’s a lot of work, especially for queens,” said Vyxen Dyxen, a former OSU student and drag king from Oklahoma City.

Theatre were 6-inch heels, acrylic nails and butt pads — just to name a few of the appearance-altering steps drag queens take when achieving the look of royalty.

winner, Jace Schell, a dietetics senior, said he is addicted to the stress and the adrenaline of performing.

“I just want to look like a scary succubus,” Schell said. “But at least I can be

seductive.”

Daniel Harel-Cazares, a mechanical engineering junior, said he began applying hair and makeup five hours prior to the show.

Harel-Cazares began

dressing in drag only three years ago after his friend introduced to him to a television show called, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” one that he says all drag queens watch.

“At the end of the night,

it’s a lot of fun,” Harel-Cazares said. “I wish there was a club in Stillwater.”

Chris Rink, a hotel and restaurant management senior, said he fell in love with dressing in drag after seeing it at a club in Oklahoma City five years ago.

“I love the attention,” Rink said. “I hope it exposes the audience to something they may not be a part of or know about.”

This year’s Dragonfly was organized by the Student Union Activities Board and hosted by Carmen Devereaux, a professional drag queen from Oklahoma City. Devereaux kept the audience entertained, filled with laughter and fabulously uncomfortable.

“If anyone is offended by anything I say, then I’m doing my job,” Devereax said.

The proceeds from this year’s Dragonfly performance benefited Freedom Oklahoma, an organization that lobbies on behalf of the Oklahoma LGBT community.

‘Unfriended’ brings horror to social media Brandon Schmitz @OColly

Although the frequency of horror movie releases is at an all-time high, few entries bring anything new to the table. The found footage sub-genre, especially, needs some retooling. Fortunately, “Unfriended,” this weekend’s major release, aims to shake things up.

Told from a computer desktop, the film follows six high school friends’ Skype session. The chat takes a sinister turn when they receive a message from a classmate who committed suicide.

The friends initially brush the message off as a prank, but the girl reveals their

darkest secrets. From there, the group realizes it’s dealing

with an otherworldly force — one that’s out for revenge.

As gimmicky as the premise sounds, I think a webcam

horror aesthetic has the potential to offer plenty of fun. Granted, I can’t see the novelty lasting through more than one film. As a one-trick pony, though, “Unfriended” has a genuine shot.

Superficial presentation is one of my major gripes with most found footage horror flicks. The audio and video quality often comes across as too clean — too professional.

I mean, we all know that this footage isn’t real, but it’s the filmmakers’ goal to make us forget that.

If “Unfriended” wants to feel authentic, then it should capitalize on Skype’s quirks.

Choppy sound, for instance, will go a long way toward setting a palpable atmosphere.

Regardless of whether

the movie succeeds, I admire “Unfriended” for trying to rejuvenate a seemingly tired sub-genre.

As long as webcam horror isn’t declared as its own sub-genre a couple of years from now, we should be fine. news@ocolly.com

OSU Community, Sunday, the state, nation and world will pause to remember the worst act of home-grown terror on American soil and the 168 people whose lives were lost in the Oklahoma City Bombing. As has become tradition, there will be 168 seconds of silence at 9:02 a.m.

From the unimaginable terror and destruction on April 19, 1995, sprang signs of survival, signs of hope. The world witnessed firsthand what would define Oklahoma City and the state. Oklahoma was admired for its strength, its generosity, its resilience.

When the Oklahoma State football staff released rosters for the 2015 Spring Game, it took no time for the Cowboys locker room to erupt in trash talk.

Makes sense, seeing how there’s been an energy around the program all offseason — Mason Rudolph is back at quarterback, Brandon Sheperd and James Washington are blooming into stars at receiver, a defense that was once young and feisty has become experienced and savvy.

So Saturday at 1 p.m. in

Boone Pickens Stadium, linebacker Ryan Simmons and seemingly everyone else in Stillwater is expecting a show.

“There’s been talks already,” Simmons said.

“When they released the teams, everybody’s been talking trash. Who’s gonna win?

“It’s competition. That’s what we do each and every practice, and we want to compete. We want to be out in a game-type situation and just win.”

Simmons said the spring game adds to the upbeat atmosphere around the program. Last season, OSU had a glorified open practice rather than a game because not enough players were available.

“We’ve had as physical a spring as we’ve had in probably five, six years,” he said. “We had enough players that we could play hard the last 14 practices. We’ve had guys tacklin’. We’re just in a really good position right now.”

Level: 1 2 3 4 George Olney Carney, 73, of Stillwater, OK, passed away on April 13, 2015 at the Villages of Southern Hills in Tulsa. He was born on March 23, 1942 in Clinton, MO, to Joshua Fuqua Carney and Aubertine Amanda Whitlow Carney. George married Janie Kathleen Walker on May 22, 1971 in Stillwater, OK, at the OSU Chapel.

George was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and loved attending OSU basketball games. During his time as a professor in the OSU Geography Department, he became one of the most popular educators on campus through his innovative Geography of Music course. He was known for his “hats” and was famous for shaking each student’s hand as they entered the classroom. His favorite thing, though, was spending time with his family. He coached several youth sports teams and loved to travel.

He is survived by his wife Janie K. Carney of Stillwater, OK, and sons, Brian Gregory Carney and his wife Tammy of Bixby, OK, and Mark Randel Carney and his wife Sarah of Olathe, KS. George also leaves his five grandchildren of Isaac Benjamin Carney, Luke Donovan Carney, and Roman Michael Carney of Bixby, and Hannah Faith Carney and Adalyn Grace Carney of Olathe. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home on 5106 North Washington Street, Stillwater, OK 74075 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Friday, April 17, 2015. The memorial service will begin at 4:00 pm. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home in celebration of George’s life.
