‘Before I Die...’ wall bringing death into conversation Will Tracy @will_tracy

Everyone must inevitably face death in one way or another.

“It’s often a taboo subject to talk about death, and we want to start breaking that taboo,” said Cindy Washington, OSU clinical counselor.

Washington also advises the Students of AMF, a campus organization that provides a support group for students dealing with grief.

AMF stands for “actively moving forward through grief and loss.”

Students of AMF installed a “Before I Die…” wall at the Student Union Plaza on Tuesday afternoon, which encouraged passers-by to share their aspirations and names of loved ones they’ve lost.

Rob Drinkwater, Students of AMF vice president, said American culture doesn’t really invite conversations about death.

“This wall is to encourage that conversation, but also I think to really en-

courage people to live life in an intentional fashion,” he said.

Washington said it gives people an opening to express themselves.

“It creates an opportunity for us to have a dialogue and to talk about our loved ones instead of suffering in silence,” Washington said.

Shelby Smith, a speech pathology freshman, lost her grandmother to an unexpected heart attack in January.

Smith wrote her grandmother’s name in yellow chalk on the wall, along with her own dream to go skydiving.

“I’ve always been a thrill seeker,” Smith said. “And if you’re up there, everything seems so little.”

Washington said it’s difficult for those who haven’t experienced the death of a loved one to understand what that level of grieving feels like.

“They want to try to say something to make people feel better, but there’s nothing you can do to make somebody feel better,” Washington said.

April 14: STILLWATER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ARRESTED FOR BOMB THREAT

An eighth grade student at Stillwater Junior High School was arrested in connection with a bomb threat made Monday afternoon, according to a media release from the Stillwater Police Department.

Stillwater Junior High, 1900 N. Skyline St., enacted its shelter-inplace plan after students found a bomb threat message on a bathroom wall at 1:40 p.m. Monday.

Stillwater police and school staff conducted a preliminary search of the building.

The Oklahoma High-

way Patrol Bomb Squad also searched the building with their bomb dogs after students were released. Nothing was found in either search.

Extra officers were on site at SJHS Tuesday morning as a precaution.

Using video footage, SPD was able to identify a suspect. School officials questioned the student Tuesday morning and presented their findings to SPD. The student was arrested at 12:20 p.m. and appeared before Payne County Court.

The suspect was charged with one count

of making a bomb threat, a felony, said SPD Capt. Kyle Gibbs.

The message at the junior high seems to be a copycat threat of the message discovered at Stillwater Middle School last Thursday, according to the release.

Police do not believe the threats are connected.

Purdy Q brand expanding with ‘Sweet Treats’ truck Micah Allen @OColly

Stillwater’s collection of food trucks just got a little bit sweeter.

Dan Purdy, owner of Purdy Q Mobile Smoke Pit, is opening a new truck called Purdy Q Sweet Treats, which will serve just that.

The new truck will feature desserts such as Italian ice, snow cones, cotton candy, milkshakes, soda and cookies.

Purdy had the idea to serve Italian ice, a sweet dessert similar to sorbet, when he realized no one in Stillwater had it. “(Purdy Q Sweet Treats’) snow cone prices will be comparable to any snow cone stand in Stillwater,” Purdy said.

“We’re shooting on opening May 1, but we’ll definitely be open sometime in May.” Purdy’s first truck, Purdy Q Mobile Smoke Pit, opened two years ago when Purdy left his job as a fifthgrade teacher because of a

back injury.

“I had always wanted to do this, and I took lemons and made lemonade,” he said.

His oldest daughter, who is going off to college in two years, inspired the idea of the Purdy Q Sweet Treats truck.

“I’ve never really had a job where I could set money aside for my daughters’ college fund, so the money we earn from the truck will go toward their college,” Purdy said.

Purdy’s three girls will be in charge of running Purdy Q Sweet Treats.

On the side of the new truck, caricatures of Purdy’s three daughters, as well as the family’s dog and cat, will be playing in a winter wonderland setting.

Blue Spruce will move to new location in downtown Stillwater

A local coffee and gelato shop is making its way into the heart of Stillwater.

Blue Spruce, 1916 N. Perkins Rd., has called the Lakeview Pointe Shopping Center home for three years.

Now, it’s on the move to downtown.

Blue Spruce’s new home will be at 8th and Main and will share space with Foot Traffic, a total foot care outlet. The new location is scheduled to open summer 2015.

Co-owners Colby and Kristen Bennett have been looking forward to the transition to a new space.

As the couple initially contemplated opening the gelato shop, the plan was to open a store near their future location.

“When we were planning and designing and putting the whole deal together, (Blue Spruce) was originally built for downtown,” Bennett said.

“It was built for a downtown atmosphere and that kind of original city culture and heritage where old historic buildings are, where you’re building back the vintage character that are in a lot of those beautiful buildings.”

Having to settle for a space in a shopping center affected the plans the couple had for their business. Bennett said moving to an older building makes creating a charming atmosphere for Blue

For the owners, the upcoming move is a joyous occasion.

“We are celebrating the fact that it’s finally happening,” Bennett said.

Clayton Franetovich remembered for his maturity, kindness was then hit by motorcyclist and OSU student Clayton Franetovich. He was thrown 20 feet from his motorcycle.

Bacon laid his motorcycle down in an effort to avoid the wreck and slid off the highway.

All three motorcyclists were wearing helmets and died at the scene, the report states.

The trio was headed home to Shawnee after taking Bacon to eat at Eskimo Joe’s for his birthday, according to a Facebook post by Lori Weyhrich, Clayton’s aunt.

On March 15, Oklahoma State lost a Cowboy.

Clayton Franetovich, 20, his dad, Steve, 49, and their neighbor Brian Bacon, 36, were headed north on U.S. Highway 177 at the junction of State Highway 105 when a vehicle crossed the line of center and struck a motorcycle Steve drove, according to a report from Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

“He was like the big brother they didn’t have,” she said.

Bradley Sullivan, Clayton’s roommate and lifelong friend, described him as “the old man of our group.”

“I feel like he had life figured out already,” Sullivan said. “You know, we’re in college, we all do stupid stuff, but he was never one to do that.”

Clayton was an agricultural leadership junior and had attended OSU since fall 2014. He graduated from Murray State College last spring and just began working as a teaching assistant for agricultural engineering Professor Randy Bean.

He didn’t get side tracked.”

Clayton’s friends and family gushed that his humble presence made him seem older and wiser than his peers.

Klimara overcomes dismissal following cocaine arrest, redeems himself as All-American Tim Ahrens @ahrens_tim

On March 24, 2014, OSU wrestler Eddie Klimara was dismissed from the program after being arrested on suspicion of public drunkenness and possession of cocaine.

Just 361 days later, Klimara celebrated his 28-second pin of Sean Boyle that secured AllAmerican status in a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.

The reason for Klimara’s turnaround? Working for the first time in his life.

“It’s pretty good here as a college athlete, and I think he has a new respect for that,” OSU coach John Smith said. “… Some of these athletes spend their whole youthful summers training and working out, and it’s a real privilege to be able to do that. I think when they find out that there is another side, it’s a healthy side, there’s no drawbacks.

“I wish every athlete some time or another spends a summer doing something extremely tough.”

‘YOU CAN ROOF, OR YOU CAN WRESTLE’ Klimara was arrested early in the morning of March 22, 2014, at Redneck Yacht Club in Oklahoma City.

At the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City hours before, Klimara lost

to Iowa’s Cory Clark 7-6 in sudden victory and was eliminated from the tournament one match short of placing eighth or higher to finish as an All-American.

Klimara left the match with tears beginning to stream down his face, his emotions clearly visible.

“It was kinda frustrating and aggravating, the second year there (coming one match short of AllAmerican),” Klimara said.

“That was about it … a release of frustration.”

Klimara had to spend the night in jail, leaving him alone with his thoughts.

“I thought I messed up, everything that I worked for to that point could be ruined due to one stupid mistake. That was my main thought.

“And, ‘Coach Smith is going to kill me.’”

After Klimara posted bond, he told Smith about the arrest. OSU still had to compete in the final day of the championships, so Smith elected to deal with it once nationals were complete. Two days later, the news broke of Klimara’s arrest and dismissal from the program.

Klimara’s father, Eddie Sr., said he and the family were devastated. Klimara wasn’t the type of guy to get in trouble. His mother, Gloria, was quoted in the affidavit of Klimara’s arrest that her son had never done cocaine in the past.

Luckily for Klimara, there was no question in Smith’s mind as to whether he’d give the sophomore a chance to

rejoin the team.

“It was what was gonna happen,” Smith said.

“What was gonna be the verdict of everything?

Through the summer, he presented himself well and there’s no question the court saw a good person that needs a second chance.”

In order to rejoin the team, Klimara had to pay off some of his court costs, a new experience for the 125-pounder who started wrestling when he was 6.

Klimara hadn’t worked a job before, spending his summers training and wrestling as he grew up.

“I did some field work for some of the guys that Coach Smith knows, dig-

ging up posts and putting up posts, stuff like that,” Klimara said.

He also went home to Joliet, Illinois, where he worked with Eddie Sr. at his roofing company, Klimara Roofing Inc. During Klimara’s time away from Stillwater, Eddie Sr. told his son he had to learn from the experience or risk losing the opportunities he had earned from more than 14 years of wrestling.

“I told Eddie, ‘You can roof, or you can wrestle,’” Eddie Sr. said. “... He’s a great kid, and I told him to keep his head up and just stay focused on wrestling, not let anything else get to him.”

On Oct. 20, 2014, Smith told media members in a season-opening interview Klimara had been reinstated to the program.

“He had to raise a lot of money. … If that didn’t happen, he’d have never been back,” Smith said.

REDEMPTION In more than 20 years of coaching Cowboy wrestling, Smith has picked up a thing or two about teaching student-athletes and helping them to learn from their mistakes.

“In the end, we’re all in the business as coaches of healing people,” Smith said. “It’s easy to kick people off, run them off and send them down the

road. It’s tough to help develop the person you know they can be. I’m much more interested in healing people, helping people than running them off.”

Fast-forward to the 2015 championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, and it seemed Klimara had been healed.

The junior entered the 125-pound bracket as the No. 7 seed, and won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals. West Virginia’s Zeke Moisey knocked off second-seeded Nahshon Garrett of Cornell, setting up a rematch between Moisey and Klimara.

The two wrestled twice prior, with Klimara getting the better of his Big 12 opponent both times.

And yet, on the morning of March 20, Moisey upset Klimara 5-2 and sent the Cowboy reeling into the wrestlebacks.

The situation was all too familiar for Klimara. Beat the next man, and you’re an All-American. Lose, and you come up short again.

It was certainly on the junior’s mind leading into his match against Boyle, the No.

5 seed who bested Klimara 11-9 earlier in the season.

“I was talking to (Kyle) Crutchmer in my room, you know, ‘I have to win this match. I’ve been here two years now, I have to win,’” Klimara said.

And win he did. After Klimara pinned Boyle to the screams of the OSU fans, he flexed, screamed in jubilance before he went and hugged Smith and assistant coach Eric Guerrero. Smith smiled, parading Klimara around the mat as the wrestler put his hand over his mouth, overwhelmed in the moment.

“It was exciting,” Smith said. “I know it’s been a long journey for him, and you’re on his side. You recognize as a coach, this is a kid who’s gone through some tough, difficult times that he put on

himself.

“But yet, you’re always at times kinda rooting for the underdog. He’s been the underdog this past year, and to see him become an AllAmerican … I didn’t have to have that to justify my decision to bring him back. But it sure made it a lot easier.”

FROM ‘JUST MISSED IT’ TO CONTENDER Now, weeks after finishing seventh at NCAAs and earning a spot on the podium, Klimara reflects back on the tournament and is sure of one thing.

Come 2016, he’s a proven contender for the title with hopes to stand atop the podium in Madison Square Garden victorious. It won’t be an easy road, though.

West Virginia’s Moisey, who finished runner-up, will likely face Klimara several times before they try to make their own title runs in New York City.

It’s going to be a challenge, but Klimara said becoming an All-American instilled in him the confi-

Smith isn’t concerned about that. For now, he’s content with the growth the junior has made in the past year. “(It’s about) realizing that one mistake can take you completely out of the game, everything that you’ve

worked for,” Smith said. “I just think that he recognizes that, and he’s (been) through that. He’s matured and he’s really growing up from the standpoint of experience, making mistakes. You’ve gotta do better, and he’s done a lot better.” sports@ocolly.com

Four Cowgirls opt to transfer

Along with the loss of seniors Liz Donohoe and Lashawn Jones, Oklahoma State will be without the services of four other players this fall.

Starting point guard Roshunda Johnson announced her intent to transfer with an Instagram post Thursday.

Shooting guards Brittany Atkins and Lakota Beatty followed suit on Twitter Saturday and Tuesday, respectively.

Johnson started 31 games this season while

averaging 11.3 points per game. Atkins was a solid 3-point shooter. She shot 43 percent from the 3-point line before she suffered her third meniscus tear of her career in January. Beatty was a spark off the bench after Atkins’ injury and was expected to start in her stead.

These three will join sophomore forward Brianne Coffman, who announced her transfer to Houston in March.

With Johnson, Atkins and Beatty all being guards, it has left the Cowgirls quite bare in the backcourt. Roddricka Patton and Diana Omozee will be the only ones

returning at the position with playing time. Help could be on the way with three-star recruit Karlie Wheeler out of Plainview, Texas, keeping her commitment to OSU. Other than Coffman, the players are still making decisions on where to transfer and it will not be known until later. The lone returning full-time starter for the Cowgirls will be Brittney Martin, an Honorable Mention All-American, at small forward.
