The first question asked to Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich during a spring football practice was about the Cowboys’ strong suits: quarterback Mason Rudolph and a plethora of talented receivers. Defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer received a tougher question about OSU’s weak point at defensive back.

Both groups competed against each other every day during spring practice.

“I don’t think we could have a better person to practice against than (Rudolph),” Spencer said. “And then the talented receivers, of course.

You can’t gang up on one of them. It’s a great test for us every snap.”

Rudolph, along with top receiver James Washington, chose to forgo April’s NFL Draft and stay at OSU for his senior year. Jalen McCleskey, who led the Cowboys with 73 catches last season, will be back for his junior season. Marcell Ateman will return from a

foot injury, which caused him to redshirt last season.

He tallied 45 receptions for 766 yards and five touchdowns in 2015. OSU also adds LSU transfer Tyron Johnson to the mix at receiver. Johnson played in nine games as a freshman for the Tigers in 2015 and has been turning heads since arriving in Stillwater.

“(Rudolph), in my opinion, is one of the best quarterbacks in the country,” safety Ramon Richards said.

“Then we have guys like James and Marcell competing, Tyron, Jalen, we have great offensive guys that’ll help us grow real fast.”

Richards and fellow safety Tre Flowers are the only returning starters at de-

fensive back for OSU. The Cowboys had three players get extensive playing time at cornerback last season, and none returned to the position this spring. OSU lost Lenzy Pipkins and Ashton Lampkin to graduation. Richards, a three-year starter at cornerback, is switching to safety for his senior season.

“They’re trying to find

their way,” receivers coach Kasey Dunn said. “They want to make a name for themselves, and they wanna earn a job. For our guys, it’s not a walk in the park now. (The cornerbacks) are young, but they’re big and physical, and they’re really driven right now.

“That corner that’s facing us right now, he’s battling for a job next fall, so he’s giving us the best he can and that’s actually raised our level so it’s going both ways right now.”

When Washington went deep during practice, he appeared to be covered, but Rudolph lobbed a pass up anyway. With sophomore cornerback Madre Harper in his face, Washington came down with the ball and got a foot down before falling out of bounds inside the Sherman E. Smith Training Facility.

The next play, Rudolph hit Johnson on a screen pass, and he shook Darius Curry before the next guy brought him down after a short gain.

“Getting beat does happen in the game of football,” Richards said. “I just want them to compete. I know

what it feels like. My freshman year, I’ve been beat plenty of times, but I want to stress to them, all you gotta do is keep getting back out there so you can be in position and experience them things and grow as a player.”

As Harper and Curry are competing for starting jobs, they’ll be forced to grow up quickly. Whether it’s them or another young player on the roster, OSU’s starting cornerback will compete in one of the most pass-heavy conferences in the country.

Fortunately for the Cowboys, their passing game could be the best in the Big 12, and the OSU defense will have to try to stop it every day at practice.

“They’re learning on the run,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “That makes them good.

“They won’t get any better tutoring than they’re getting at practice.”

A couple of Cowboys are making their way back onto the field after injuries last season.

Marcell Ateman has faced adversity this spring, but he’s ready to return from a broken foot, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said.

Ateman, a senior wide receiver, suffered a foot injury and missed the 2016 season after catching 45 passes for 766 yards and five touchdowns in 2015.

Jordan Brailford was a projected starter heading into the 2016 season, but a stress fracture kept him out of action. Brailford, a redshirt junior defensive end, finished his redshirt freshman season with 23 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. He said he feels better than he ever has and is ready to get going this season.

Rudolph said he wants to continue giving back to the Cowboy program

even while he’s still playing.

“I like to try to have an impact on them in some way,” Rudolph said. “It’s fun for me because I’ll be able to come back here in a year or two and hang out with these same guys.

It’s a promising future.”

What to know about the spring game

The spring game will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday inside Boone Pickens Stadium. Parking will be open throughout campus, and admission is free.

Seating and concessions will be available on the south side of the stadium only. Fans should enter gates on the south side of the stadium. Also, fans will be allowed on the field after the game to interact with players.

Fans can enter the field from the east side of the stadium when an announcement is made to do so.

Remember the ten

Orange and black is littered throughout the crowd, Oklahoma State University’s iconic Pistol Pete on some shirts and the Eskimo Joe’s logo on others. A starter’s gun goes off, and the streets of Stillwater are filled with people running in remembrance of 10 family members. Most of the runners never met these 10, but their spirits live on throughout the community.

The Remember the Ten Run carries on the lives of 10 members of the OSU basketball community who died in a 2001 plane crash in Colorado, but the run has done more than alleviate the pain of losing family; it has generated more than $200,000 for University Counseling Services to help OSU students, faculty and family members deal with grief and depression.

Courtney Lorson, an architecture junior, started using UCS in September 2015. Lorson said it has helped her get rid of her depression and control her anxiety.

“I can honestly say counseling services turned my life around,” Lorson said. “Over time, I was able to talk about my problems rather than suffering in silence. It’s FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 2017

“It’s provided us with the resources to buy materials to give to students,” Washington said. “I was here when the Murrah bombing happened. We were scrambling around to print stuff off and make copies for everyone. Now we don’t have to. We have all of these things in place and have a wide variety of resources to help people.”

A book and journal are two of the resources counselors give students who are struggling with grief.

The book covers grief and what to expect with it while the journal is a way to help students work through the feelings of grief, Washington said.

Lorson is one of hundreds of OSU students who benefit from the services counseling can provide for them. UCS director Trevor Richardson said all the money UCS gets from the Remember the Ten Run goes directly to serving students and faculty who need help.

The university has been able to waive fees for students who need counseling for the first few visits because of the proceeds.

Lorson said she has been able to save money and alleviate stress because of the free services.

Students in need of grief counseling receive the first five visits for free. In other cases, some students can get up to 10 free visits with counselors, Lorson said.

Cindy Washington is the head grief counselor at OSU. In her 25 years with UCS, she has helped students deal with events including plane crashes in 2001 and 2011, as well

Sara Hills is Washington’s graduate assistant this year. She’s the third graduate assistant UCS has hired with help from Remember the Ten proceeds. Hills helps with counseling for students dealing with grief as well as going to classrooms and speaking with students about the help UCS offers.

Although she focuses on grief, Hills said talking about a student’s problems could be one of the best ways to help someone in need.

“It’s an amazing thing to listen to the accomplishments these people in counseling have done,” Hills said. “It’s probably

Saturday, members of the OSU family will line Duck Street and start their run to remember the 10.

The families of those lost in the Colorado plane crash wanted UCS to receive the proceeds, and Richardson said he hopes to continue giving back to students.

“I believe we have staff that have a big heart for OSU,” Richardson said. “If they continue to develop their skills from training, that in turn provides more services for our students. That helps motivate the staff.”

“I got to find out first,” Foreman said. “We are all standing there, and there are about nine other guys next to me and they are all wanting the same thing so much.”

Ten students gathered in the O-Club Room in Gallagher-Iba Arena on April 10 in hopes of becoming one of the two new Pistol Pete mascots. After the tryout process, Foreman, a mechanical and aerospace engineering senior from Shawnee, and Vekony, an animal science and agriculture education senior from Byng, were chosen

“I had this huge rush of relief and excitement and the nerves kind of go away for a second and you have this pure moment of, ‘Holy smokes, I get to do this,’”

Foreman said.

The tryout process for Pistol Pete involves judges finding the best candidates based on an interview, silent miming and posing as the mascot in potential game

situations, according to OSU Spirit’s website. One of the unique parts of the tryouts are the judges, who are former Pistol Pete mascots themselves, Foreman said.

“They judge you, they ask you scenarios, you go through them and it’s a really cool and intense process,” Foreman said. “But to me, the coolest thing was just seeing the brotherhood and how much passion they still had for it and the impact it had on them.”

During their tenure as Pete, Foreman and Vekony will attend about 500 events, ranging from sporting events to baby showers, according to the website.

“They see Pistol Pete at football games, basketball

games, occasionally baseball and wrestling, and they think that’s about it,” Foreman said. “But there is so much more interaction with people one-on-one in a smaller setting that I enjoy more.”

Foreman and Vekony said they have aspired to be Pistol Pete since they became Oklahoma State University fans. For Vekony, seeing the impact Pistol Pete had outside of football games was another factor.

“I really decided that OSU’s a place that I call home, and it gave me so much and I want to give back in some way,” Vekony said.

“Pete is that way, luckily.”

Foreman and Vekony have tried out for Pistol Pete before. Vekony said he believes

it helped prepare him for his audition this year.

The two new mascots will start their duties as Pistol Pete as early as the week of April 16.

“I think I can speak for Kyle as well when I say we are on cloud nine right now, and I can honestly say I don’t feel that changing the whole year,” Vekony said. “That’s my hope that my passion is going to stay the whole year, and I know it will because the experience is something we will never be able to go through again.”
