Whitney Whitehorn remembers the game as if it was yesterday.

Whitehorn, a senior on the Oklahoma State softball team, was cruising through the opponent’s lineup, pitching as well as she had in a long time.

Then she felt a nagging pain in her hip.

A couple innings passed, and before she knew it, she couldn’t lift her leg. She came into the dugout and signaled to Claire Williams, OSU’s head athletic trainer, to check her out. Whitehorn knew something was wrong.

The OSU softball team was facing the University of Texas San Antonio with Whitehorn in the circle. A game that started with so much promise turned south quickly for Whitehorn, an Owasso native.

“I was just in tears because I knew something was seriously wrong,” Whitehorn said.

Her parents, Tony and Jamie Whitehorn, tried to console her, telling her it was probably only a hip flexor strain. But Whitehorn had a feeling it was more severe.

The MRI results echoed her thoughts, and before she knew it, she was on a plane to Nashville for surgery. She had torn the labrum in her left hip.

in the In-Lon-Schka, Osage ceremonial dances that occur during a four-day span each summer. It’s one of the Osage tribe’s most coveted traditions, held every year in Grayhorse, Hominy and Pawhuska, known as the center of the three traditional Osage districts.

A typical day consists of lots of dancing while wearing traditional Osage clothes in the unforgiving Oklahoma summer heat. The dances usually happen in the afternoon and evening, with meals before and after.

Whitehorn has always enjoyed participating in the In-Lon-Schka, just as other members have enjoyed her presence, especially the children, and that always jumps out to her dad.

“That’s one of the truly awesome and amazing things that I get to witness is how she can have a positive influence on other kids’ lives, especially younger girls,” Tony said.

“That really means a lot to us that she can use herself as an

Osage woman to show these young kids that they can do it, anyone can.”

Since she was a child, Whitehorn has always been a good kid, doing the right thing, her parents said. Part of that could be attributed to the In-Lon-Schka, which teaches discipline, honor and respect.

The strict rituals of the dances have helped Whitehorn in her athletic career, instilling discipline in her from a young age.

And it was that discipline that helped her battle through her hip injury.

‘What else can this kid go through?’

After the surgery to repair a torn labrum, uncertainty engulfed Whitehorn. Would she ever return to full health?

Would she be able to run around with her future children and play with them?

Rehab sessions were strenuous, lasting up to three hours in the beginning. The sessions consisted of numerous small

usually easy for Whitehorn.

But her surgically repaired hip had other plans, causing her to be timid in her rehab.

“The smallest movement was exhausting,” Whitehorn said. “My hip would get so tired, and I didn’t want to hurt it again.”

At night, Whitehorn was forced to sleep on her back with her foot in a rubber band to keep her hip from externally rotating. Her inability to sleep paired with long rehab sessions made the recovery process hard for Whitehorn. After six months, however, she was fully healthy again.

Then during an offseason team run, it happened again.

This time, it was in her right hip.

Tony was at work when he received the call.

“She called and said, ‘Dad, we were running, and I felt the tear,’” Tony said.

He immediately called his wife, who was also at work.

Within the hour, they were headed to Stillwater.

“On our way there, me and Jamie just looked at each other and said, ‘What else can this kid go through?’” Tony said. “It was a gut shot. It finally seemed like she was healthy and ready, finally going to start her career, and then it happened again. The exact same injury.”

Whitehorn couldn’t believe it. At first, she was devastated. That emotion quickly turned to determination.

“After the first surgery, it took me a long time to wake up and get going,” Whitehorn said. “The second surgery, I knew what to expect.

I was ready to go.”

Her final chapter In her senior season, Whitehorn is healthy and better than ever. Finally getting consistent at-bats, she’s been a mainstay in the middle of the Cowgirls’ lineup. She’s fourth on the team in home runs (six) and RBIs (27).

“It’s a great story; what she’s gone through and how she’s persevered,” coach Kenny Gajewski said. “To watch kids succeed is pretty cool, especially when they work hard.

You get what you deserve in this game, and she deserves all that good. It’s been fun to watch.”

Although she has one more year of eligibility left, Whitehorn has decided this will be her final season playing softball.

“There just comes a time when you’re like, ‘This is it for me,’” Whitehorn said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better team and coaching staff to go through this with. It’s just time.”

She plans to attend law school after this season and become a tribal lawyer.

The odds of playing Division-I college softball are low.

daughter is doing. But nothing compares to the pride they felt when their daughter said she wanted to work with the tribe for her career.

“For her to make that commitment, wanting to work with other native people, it means an awful, awful lot to our family,” Tony said. “It just swells us with pride.”

Although the journey hasn’t always been smooth, Whitehorn is finally nearing the end point of her playing career.

Four years have come and gone, with injuries snagging a few seasons from her. But the present is all that matters. She’s a mainstay in the lineup of a nationally-ranked team having its best season in years. She’s finally healthy.

“There’s a feeling here,” Whitehorn said. “This place has something special that a lot of schools don’t have.”

handful of upcoming Spears School of Business graduates have been sharing their college experiences since their freshman year as part of the “I Am Building” project. The initiative chronicled the lives of these students, corresponding with the construction of the Business Building.

How do you see students taking advantage of the new state-of-the-art building?

A few days after the new Business Building officially opened for classes on Jan. 16, we asked these students how the new building is impacting their experience.

Jeana Wilson: I feel like students will be able to take advantage of having a central location to do their homework, grab a cup of coffee, connect with professors and other students, work on their classwork, and want to be at the business school and feel at home at the business school.

Tim Sakabu: I’ve definitely noticed that a lot more students are excited to be taking business classes. Everyone is always talking about what classes they get to take in there, and there’s a lot more excitement around the campus.

What was your first impression when you walked into the completed building for the first time?

Braxton Noble: I would say the biggest thing was seeing all the students welcoming the other students, helping them find their classes, and realizing how state-of-the-art it really is.

Jeana Wilson: When I first walked into the building it was complete awe. The building itself is just absolutely beautiful.

Peyton Hillery: Everything looks so inviting. I think the thing that I’m most excited to be able to use on a regular basis are the study rooms. The glassed-in study rooms are so cool, and they’re open and very well-lit, but they’re also private rooms that you can study in.

SPD officers who shot suicidal man identified S ta ff r epo rt, @ O C olly

The Stillwater Police Department has identified the two officers who shot and killed William John Dominguez, 31, the night of March 28.

After the Payne County District Attorney’s Office declared the shooting “justified, appropriate and necessary,” Micheal Casteel and Trevor Meridith have been named as the two officers who fatally shot Dominguez, according to a press release from SPD Capt. Kyle Gibbs

Casteel and Meridith, 8- and 9-year veterans of the department, respectively, responded to Dominguez’ 911 call in which he told dispatcher Vanessa Prince he had a

gun and knife in his possession and was thinking of jumping into oncoming traffic.

As Casteel and Meridith approached Dominguez, Dominguez reportedly pulled a pistol and

a knife from his pants, posing “an immediate deadly threat to the officers as well as any pedestrians, traffic and apartment occupants in the immediate vicinity,” according to the release.

Four gunshots rang out, and Dominguez fell to the ground, fatally wounded.

“The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) was asked to conduct the criminal investigation into the officer involved shooting,” Gibbs wrote in the release. “Their case was presented to the Payne County District Attorney who determined the use of deadly force in this incident was justified, appropriate and necessary. The Stillwater P.D. administrative review of the incident also determined the officers

responded appropriately to the threat and their use of lethal force was justified and in accordance with department policy.”

SPD had one contact with Dominguez on March 19, according to the release.

Dominguez initiated a request for assistance through a third party and was taken into protective custody without incident and taken for a medical evaluation, according to the release.

Casteel and Meridith have been cleared to return to work as SPD officers.

If she likes to dance: Outlaws Outlaws is one of the only bars on The Strip that has a dance floor. If you want to dance the night away with your mom, this is the place to go. It plays a variety of music, but line dancing is

most popular there. Outlaws’ signature drinks are a Pendleton and Sprite, which costs $4.75, and a strawberry lemonade shot that costs $3.50.

If she’s hip: The Union The Union, the newest bar on the strip, has a lively atmosphere and tends to draw big crowds. It’s a hip spot with lots of colorful lights and a stage. It’ll have a DJ on Saturday night for you and your mom to enjoy. The bar’s signature drink is a pitcher of beer for $10. It also has shots such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Fruit Loops for $3.50.

If she’s a bit nerdy: College Bar College Bar has a calmer environment than most of the bars on The Strip. It also has drawings on the wall of “Rick and Morty” and pictures of Albert Einstein.

The whole place gives off a nerdy vibe. College Bar has a large selection of beers that range from $3.50 to $7. It’s also known for its “weird science shots” that have dry ice for $4.50.
