March 12: REPORTED VANDALISM AT SIGMA CHI Just after 11 a.m., Stillwater police responded to a vandalism complaint at Sigma Chi Fraternity, 1101 W. University Ave. At the house, a man, whose name was redacted from the police report, told police he arrived for routine scheduled maintenance on the house and noticed that some rooms felt “warmer than he expected,” according to a report from the Stillwater Police Department.

Upon further inspection, the man found electrical wires to exterior air units had been cut.

The cuts looked to be more than a few weeks old, the report states. The man told police the remaining wiring would need to be pulled and reinstalled because of the way in which the wires were cut.

The job is estimated to

cost $1,500, the report states. The case is suspended until a suspect is identified.

MORE THAN $600 IN ICE CREAM TOPPINGS SENT TO KERR HALL The East Lampeter Police Department in Lancaster, Pennsylvania reported that an individual sent $653 worth of ice cream toppings to a residence in Kerr Hall, according to a police report from OSUPD. The toppings were purchased with a flagrantly used credit card, the report states.

March 26: STILLWATER MAN ARRESTED, CHARGED FOR ROBBERY AND STABBING Stillwater police arrested Erick Dawayne Harrison Hagler, 22, for the robbery and stabbing of a 67-yearold man March 14.

Hagler appeared in person before the Payne County Court from Payne County Jail without counsel March 27. Hagler was

charged with one count of robbery in the first degree and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. His bond was set for $250,000.

On March 14, just before 8 p.m., SPD responded to a reported stabbing near 1800 S. Fern St. and found victim David Holba, who had been assaulted and stabbed multiple times, according to a media release from SPD. Witnesses, who identified Hagler as the victim’s attacker from a photo lineup, told officers the suspect struck Holba in the head with a glass liquor bottle and then stabbed him three times in the lower abdomen with the broken bottle, according to the affidavit. Police said Hagler demanded money and Holba’s cell phone.

An altercation took place between Holba and Hagler as Hagler tried to take the victim’s cell phone, the affidavit states.

Hagler reportedly fled the scene in a dark gray four-door car along with another man, Treyvon Johnson, who was driving the car, the affidavit states.

The driver has not been

charged.

Holba was taken to OU Medical Center for treatment. He received three stab wounds to his lower abdomen, which caused seven punctures to his intestines, the affidavit states.

Hagler pleaded guilty to feloniously pointing a firearm, knowingly concealing stolen property, possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing an officer, domestic abuse assault and battery, domestic assault and battery, assault and battery and three counts of threats to kill Feb. 27, according to Oklahoma State Courts Network.

Hagler was sentenced to 16 years in custody and ordered to pay $625 in fines.

March 27: OSU STUDENT CHARGED WITH UNLAWFUL DELIVERY OF ACID Payne County Court charged Khurram Karim Makhani, 18, with unlawful delivery of a controlled dangerous substance, lysergic acid diethylamide, unlawful possession of lysergic acid diethylamide and marijuana with intent to distribute within 2,000 feet of a school and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia March 27.

Makhani reportedly delivered and distributed lysergic acid diethylamide Feb. 2, according to court documents.

On Feb. 27, at about 2:15 p.m., Oklahoma State police were dispatched to investigate a suspicious odor in a residence in Kerr Hall, according to the affidavit. The faint smell of marijuana could be detected from the outside of the room, the affidavit states.

Officers found 39 grams

of “green leafy substance,” two glass smoking devices, a black grinder containing a “green leafy substance,” two clear plastic containers with a small amount of “green leafy substance,” and $302 belonging to Makhani in his backpack.

Digital scales were found in Makhani’s possession as well, according to the initial filing document.

Makhani was arrested and booked at Payne County Jail. He posted his $10,000 bond Feb. 28.

If convicted of all three counts, Makhani could serve a minimum of 21 years and/or pay a maximum fine of $401,000.

SGA Presidential Candidates: Kyle Hilbert Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

In the eighth grade, Kyle Hilbert began his involvement with the Future Farmers of America — an experience he said crafted his desire to study at Oklahoma State.

Now heading into his final year at OSU before going to law school, Hilbert is running for Student Government Association President simply to leave OSU better than it was when he arrived three years ago.

Hilbert is from Depew, a small town along the Interstate 44 corridor southwest of Tulsa. Hilbert said

he looks up to his older brother, Kreg, because of how his brother conducted himself in high school and in his own family.

“Growing up, it was inspiring seeing how everyone at Depew High School looked up to him,” Hilbert said. “Today, I look up to him because of the love he shows for his wife and his daughter.

“I hope to one day be as good of a husband and father as he is for his family.”

During high school, Hilbert was involved with his local Future Farmers of America chapter. Hilbert came to Oklahoma State for a degree in agribusiness building on his experiences from FFA in Depew.

His presence in CASNR soon garnered the attention of the CASNR Student Council to fill its vacant SGA senate seat during Hilbert’s sophomore year. From the senate, he learned the inner workings of SGA and how it affected student organizations.

Hilbert said he wants to promote OSU tradition as president, emphasizing that OSU is more than just athletics.

“Not that athletics are bad by any means, but what is it that the student

body truly rallies behind besides sports?” Hilbert said.

Hilbert plans to partner with the OSU Alumni Association to work on the Cowboy Legend project.

Cowboy Legend is a book that will be distributed to incoming freshmen that outlines traditions for new students to participate in.

“This could be a great partnership for SGA to help market this traditions book and app to non-freshman students,” Hilbert said.

Above the rest of his platform, Hilbert said his priority is leaving OSU better than when he arrived.

SGA Presidential Candidates: Chance Imhoff Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

Chance Imhoff doesn’t just want to be Student Government Association President.

He wants to be an ambassador on behalf of every student on campus.

Imhoff grew up as a fifth-generation farmer from Prague, 50 miles east of Oklahoma City. He said Oklahoma State’s agriculture program and sense of family brought him to OSU. “I was attracted to OSU by its rich agricultural background and the sense of family that I felt when visiting campus,” Imhoff

said. “Now as a business student, I love the passion with which OSU students pursue their interests and the opportunities that OSU provides.”

Imhoff said his father is his role model, for how he “exemplifies the American Dream.”

“His hard work and strong family values are what made him both a successful small business owner and a great husband and father,” Imhoff said. “He is undoubtedly responsible for the values I hold and for the man I am today.”

After arriving on campus in 2013, Imhoff quickly found his way to Freshman Representative Council.

legislators.

Imhoff attributes this time as a part of the campaign to why he decided to run for office.

“I began to understand the ins and outs of SGA,” Imhoff said. “(I) saw the great potential to implement real change on campus and start the conversation about the big issues facing OSU. “I see the role of president as an ambassador for OSU students on a university and state level and as a way to set real change in motion.”

Imhoff wants a bigger branding campaign for SGA in an effort to see more students participate in SGA and is supportive of collaborative work with the Residence Hall As-

sociation and International Student Organization.

“We would also like to implement a talent search program that will find all interested students, particularly incoming freshmen, a home in SGA,” Imhoff said.

Imhoff and his running mate, Jacquelyn Lane, support diversity training on campus, along with extended student service hours at the Colvin Center and dining options.

After finishing his degree at OSU, Imhoff plans to pursue an MBA and eventually start his own business.

Shoe Bank, a Stillwater staple, to close in May

A door swings open as a chime announces the entrance of yet another customer to the store. Boxes lie open with their lids scattered elsewhere, and tissue paper litters the floor like the remains of opened birthday presents. Customers and employees chat like old friends. Some laugh, some hug and some cry.

This is Shoe Bank, and after 34 years in business, it is tying up its laces for the last time. The store, located at 603 N. Perkins Road, first opened its doors in Stillwater in 1988. It will close them for the final time when its lease expires in May. David Swain and his wife Jana opened their first shoe store in Cushing in June 1981. But just like a child outgrowing a pair of shoes, Shoe Bank outgrew its first location, and a new location was sought out. The Swains found the perfect spot in Stillwater at Pioneer Square and moved their entire inventory in 1988. They’ve been there ever since.

“We expanded from 2,000 square feet to 5,700, then to 7,700 square feet at our present time,” David said.

Another store, located in Sapulpa, was also opened, but it closed in 1992.

Through the highs and lows of business, the Swains “just kept expanding and enjoying success in Stillwater.”

“We feel very fortunate to have been in business during this time,” David said.

through the business school.

Jana, also a sophomore, was a Kappa Alpha Theta majoring in Clothing, Textiles and Merchandising. They began dating their junior year.

David and Jana married in 1972, between semesters, and eventually decided to start their own business in 1981. They combined David’s training in business with Jana’s merchandising knowledge and created Shoe Barn, Shoe Bank’s predecessor.

The Swains’ business began to grow steadily. The pace of expansion soon equaled the pace of learning business, and the Swains

were operating two stores — one in Stillwater and one in Sapulpa — at once. Over the course of 34 years, David estimates more than 500 students have been employed at the Shoe Bank.

“The university keeps Stillwater vibrant and progressive,” David said.

Camden Means, who has worked at Shoe Bank since 2013, said the store feels like a second family.

“I’ve made some of my best friends working there, so I’ve loved getting to know them, and I’ll really miss seeing them all the time,” Means said. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had.”

Means, who will graduate in May from OSU with a bachelor’s degree in strategic communications, said the Swains deserve all of the credit for the success of the store.

“David and Jana Swain are two of the kindest and smartest people I know, and they created a brand that the Stillwater community (and more) really grew to depend on,” Means said. “I can’t tell you how many times people would say they had traveled to shop there or that they only buy their shoes from the Shoe Bank.”

working, expanding their business and adapting with the changing styles of the time.

“We have great customers who have become friends and will miss seeing them,” David said.

Eventually, all things must change, and that includes how business is done these days. David noted more stringent banking regulations and vendors selling directly to their customers as some of the more difficult changes to deal with in recent years. Leaving their employees, however, may be the hardest change they’ll face.

“Keeping up with former employees is a joy, especially when they have been successful,” David said. “We will miss them.”

Shoe Bank is currently holding a “Retirement Sale” from now until the end of May, or until all of the shoes are gone, whichever comes first.

“People keep asking us ‘How long is it going to last?’

Well, the more you buy, the less time it’s going to take us,” David said.

A lot has changed since the Swains started their business back in 1981. Most homes then didn’t have a computer, cable channel MTV was shown for the first time and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, wouldn’t be born for another three years. In that time, the Swains have seen their business grow to become a Stillwater staple of local business.

“We always thought that the reason for the success we had was hard work and a willingness to change with the times,” David said.

The Swains celebrated 43 years of marriage this year.

If you ask how they’ve been able to make it work, their answers could apply just as easily to business as it does to marriage.

“Work together,” Jana said.

“Learn how to say ‘Yes, ma’am,’” David said.

The slogan of the Shoe Bank is “If the shoe fits, buy it!” Once all of the shoes have been bought, the Swains plan to wear out their most comfortable pairs in retirement in Tulsa. news@ocolly.com PAGE 5

Last week, Oklahomans turned on their local TV stations to see tornadoes tear through the suburbs of Oklahoma’s largest cities.

Severe storms and two tornadoes hit Moore and Sand Springs, doing significant damage and killing at least four people.

At Oklahoma’s two largest colleges, plans are in place to keep students safe during storm season.

In Norman, the University of Oklahoma is constructing a campus-wide shelter project to protect about 4,000 students, faculty and staff in the event a dangerous storm hits campus. These are in addition to previously designated safe areas and will serve as standalone shelters.

The $12 million project is financed by state allocations to higher education for architectural and building expansion.

Many buildings on campus offer storm shelter in basements, and OSU is adding additional shelter in its new buildings.

In Stillwater, OSU is constructing basements to serve as shelters in new buildings on campus, such as the University Commons, the new business building and the new Physical Plant building. OSU Communications director Gary Shutt said these will be in addition to buildings on OSU’s safe refuge list, which all have

basements.

“In addition to that, the dining facility at the University Commons has a basement,” Shutt said. “And it will hold around 1,000 people. The new Physical Plant facility will have a basement, and it will hold at least 1,000.

“We feel like the most effective way to provide refuge and shelter is to build basements in these new buildings.”

The new business building’s basement will also hold an additional 4,000 people, Shutt said.

On a city level, Stillwater

Emergency Management would coordinate warning the public ahead of the storm. Stillwater Emergency Management Director Kirk Mittelstet said ideally his office would take action 10-15 minutes before the storm hits.

“It’s not after a storm hits that we go to work, it’s before the storm hits,” Mittelstet said. “Before the (tornado) watch comes out, we’re already here working.”

In the event that Stillwater is hit, community leaders would activate the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the response.

Stillwater Medical Center would also assist in treating injuries. Steven Taylor, vice president of support services for Stillwater Medical Center, said the facility has procedures for severe weather in place.

“If there is a severe weather event in Payne County and sirens are blown, we implement Code Black procedures,” Taylor said. “These procedures

would include setting up our command post, evacuating patients to the basement and moving everyone to the center most part of the building away from close and other potentially flying debris.

“Once the all-clear has been received from local emergency management, we would decide whether or not we need to prepare for an influx of patients based on what has occurred throughout the community.”

A worst-case scenario would be a direct hit on the medical center itself, which happened during the Joplin, Missouri, tornado nearly four years ago and in the 2013 Moore tornado. Taylor said there are contingencies in place.

“In the event Stillwater Medical Center took a direct hit and we determined the facility or portions of the facility were unsafe, we have alternate care sites set up that we could evacuate patients to, if needed,” Taylor said.

Dough Pokes to open food truck Zach Collums @zachcollums

Donuts on wheels will soon be a reality for Stillwater.

Dough Pokes, which quickly became popular for its gourmet donuts after opening last summer, closed its store March 14 but plans to keep its donuts in Stillwater.

When the restaurant reopens, it will serve its donuts from a food truck.

Brad Essary, who opened Dough Pokes and owns Red Rock Café, said he envisioned Dough Pokes to bring something different to the donut

scene in Stillwater.

“Dough Pokes was a kind of a vision of gourmet donuts and really trying to kick it up a notch and do something that we hadn’t seen a lot of in this area,” Essary said.

The donut shop was quickly popular for its unique combinations of donuts and donut toppings.

The popularity didn’t help with the cost of running a store on The Strip, though. Essary said closing the store and opening a food truck has many benefits for the business.

“It’s a lot cheaper to run a food truck than it is to run a brick and mortar building,” Essary said. “It

gives an opportunity to keep the brand alive and keep giving people the things that they really enjoyed and try something new at the same time.”

Customers will get the same experience of choosing from the many donut combinations. Essay said he plans to keep the whole line of donuts from the store on the food truck.

Dough Pokes’ move into the food truck scene, which Essary said is planned to happen in the next four to six weeks, is another benefit of taking the business mobile.

Essary said the food truck scene in Stillwater is supportive of each other

because it benefits each business.

“The unique thing about the food truck scene is that it’s a game where everybody wins when everybody plays,” Essary said. “The food trucks in this town are really good at not viewing each other as competition. The more they can get together at any one time, the better.”

Essary said he hopes people will look for what Dough Pokes brings to Stillwater.

“Hopefully, they appreciate a really quality donut that’s different and that they’ll seek out the truck to find it,” Essary said. news@ocolly.com

With a massive contract and affable personality as life preservers, Travis Ford’s tenure as Oklahoma State basketball coach remains afloat.

Less than 24 hours after The Oklahoman cited multiple sources saying OSU officials were considering a buyout of Ford’s contract, OSU athletic director Mike Holder released a statement Tuesday announcing Ford is staying at OSU. And maybe more interesting than the news itself is the way it went down.

At 5:13 p.m., Boone Pickens — OSU’s mega-

booster and close friend of Holder — tweeted the following: “I’m in Travis Ford’s camp. He deserves more time at #OKState. Go Pokes!”

At 6:14 p.m., the OSU athletic department released Holder’s statement, which began, “Given the overwhelming amount of unfounded rumors surrounding the future of our head basketball coach Travis Ford, I am departing from my usual practice of not talking about personnel matters. Travis Ford is our head coach now, and he will be our head coach moving forward.”

Although Ford has failed to meet the lofty expectations of the OSU fan base, especially in the past two seasons, he has the benefit of a 10-year

extension he signed in September 2009. The estimated buyout for the contract is $9.6 million.

Worth noting: Holder told The Oklahoman last April, “In retrospect, (the contract) wasn’t good for him or us.”

Ford has led the Cowboys to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and five in his seven years as coach.

However, Ford is 1-5 in the tournament at OSU and also has a 60-60 total record in Big 12 play.

Last season, OSU was a preseason top-10 team, but finished with a 21-13 record and an openinground loss to Gonzaga.

This season, Ford led a team that exceeded expectations but sputtered in the final weeks, ending with a first-round loss to

Oregon.

All that is fuel for his detractors, of which there are many, but Ford still holds a reputation as a hard-working, genuine coach. Several players — with guard Phil Forte as a prime spokesman — have publicly supported Ford multiple times.

“Stupid,” Forte told the O’Colly last season regarding the possibility of Ford being fired. “There is not a coach in the country that works as hard as he does.

If you guys could see that stuff that he goes into preparation, whether it’s practice or a game. This is what he does.”

It appears those same qualities — and that contract — are enough to buy Ford more time in Stillwater.

Cowboys struggle at the plate in a loss to ORU Marshall Scott @Marshall_Once

TULSA — After a multitude of frames with neither team finding an advantage, a clutch hit from ORU sent the Cowboys home in defeat.

The No. 11 Cowboys could not seem to get anything going in a 4-2 loss to Oral Roberts on Tuesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The game was tied 2-2 until the eighth inning when Oklahoma State’s “bend but don’t break” defense finally broke.

ORU’s catcher Matt Whatley and left fielder Rolando Martinez got the Eagles going in the eighth, both hitting singles to left field. Pitcher Trey Cobb then threw a ball low and outside that got by catcher Gage Green and the runners advanced to second and third. The Cowboys were an out away from getting out of the inning when designated hitter Anthony Sequeira ripped a double to the gap in leftcenter field, scoring two runs, and the Eagles held on to the win.

“ORU played a good game,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said. “They got a clutch hit there late in the game, so you tip your cap to them.

“In the end they had one quality swing there that made a difference in the game.”

OSU second baseman Tim Arakawa had an excellent day at the plate.

Despite the loss, Arakawa went 3-for-4 with three singles and one run scored.

“I was just trying to compete,” Arakawa said.
