It’s March 8, and it has been two days since Erica Stephens won the election.

She’s seated only steps away from the room where she’ll soon preside over the Student Government Association.

She’s calm, yet confident – a powder keg of enthusiasm crammed into a tiny casing. Her personality casts a shadow her diminutive frame fails to match.

Glowing with happiness, she carefully fields questions, piecing together answers with ease. This is nowhere near her first interview in recent weeks, and it certainly won’t be her last.

But she’s still enjoying the celebration after her victory, letting it sink in how rare her opportunity is.

“I’m definitely not over it,” Stephens said with a chuckle. “Right now, I just feel rested. We’ve been going nonstop, so it’s been weird not having

to do anything for a few days.”

Stephens is only the second African-American woman to win the office of SGA president at Okla-

homa State University, her tenure beginning more than 40 years after that of her predecessor.

And yet, despite the four-decade gap, Stephens’ message to her

fellow students wasn’t so dissimilar from that of her forerunner. The campaign to spread that message, though, couldn’t have been further apart.

Amid a rising tide of

political awareness, Patrice Latimer was elected SGA president in 1973.

In a time when young women were clamoring for more political influence, Latimer climbed

to the top of her student body.

Although society had made significant progress, the color of Latimer’s skin was still an obstacle to overcome. Latimer made few public appearances in fear that either her gender or her race would stall the campaign before it began.

“My running mate was a Caucasian male,” Latimer said. “Now, that didn’t make a difference to us, but those that were in our campaign organization felt it was important for me to not take a front row in our publicity.”

Rather than using herself as the image for her campaign, Latimer and her team chose to use a St. Bernard as a mascot.

And without the ability to present the message herself, she was running a campaign without legs.

“There was a perception that there wasn’t an openness … to having a black female lead a ticket, or even on the ticket,” Latimer said.

protests had erupted on campus expressing discontent with the treatment of African-American students, particularly women.

The protests placed a shroud over the campus, pinning black students in a corner where their acceptance was in doubt.

It’s that turbulent racial climate that propelled Latimer to run for office.

Preaching a message of unity among all students, her campaign sought to reach those whose voices were rarely heard. Usurping the tradition of Greeks being the predominant force behind SGA was Latimer’s goal.

“It always was part of my upbringing and my beliefs that we were more alike than we were different,” she said.

Kent Sampson, longtime SGA adviser and staple of the OSU community, fondly remembers Latimer’s time on campus.

During her tenure as president, Sampson served as the program director for the Residence Hall Association, often seeing Latimer’s drive to succeed firsthand.

“She had a real knack for finding the voices that weren’t often heard,” Sampson said. “She was like a microphone for the students who were sometimes forgotten.”

It’s a message Stephens and her running mate, Brayden Farrell, still used 44 years later. In recent months, OSU’s campus, and the nation as a whole, has reached a level of division not seen since the 1970s.

Spurred on by an everchaotic political environment, protests have exploded across the nation.

The campus in Stillwater has been no exception.

Feb. 3, students gathered en masse in front of Ed-

mon Low Library, taking part of a “resist fascism” movement. Students stood opposite each other, some carrying signs calling for peace, others shouting the words. One side formed a wall adorned with “Trump” posters and flags, the other expounding upon the U.S. president’s perceived failings.

A message of unity couldn’t have come at a better time for Stephens and Farrell. Unlike Latimer, though, Stephens was the face of her campaign.

“Brayden and I went to different organizations throughout the whole campaign,” Stephens said.

“I was talking to two or three groups a night all the way up until the last night before the election.”

At each presentation, Stephens would attempt to pitch her quality as an SGA president – to try to form a bond with each student and create trust.

Farrell said building strong relationships is an area in which Stephens excels.

“She’s just a genuine person,” Farrell said. “I think that’s really what just makes her so likable and relatable. You just always get the real thing with Erica.”

Her genuine personality has placed in her in a position only one other person has experienced.

In Washington, D.C., 1,200 miles away, Latimer is now a successful attorney. A 1975 graduate, her time as SGA president gave her a view of the world she hadn’t seen before. It gave her the chance to face racial and gender inequality and rise above it.

It gave her the confidence to overcome whatever obstacles could lie ahead.

Looking back on her tenure at OSU, she thinks of distant memories, of a time when her skin color was less accepted, when her gender was less privileged, and she’s hopeful for Stephens.

The two women are part of a small but prestigious group and share a perspective only they know together.

Before she hangs up the phone, Latimer congratulates Stephens and Farrell on their victory. But she has one final message: “Keep bringing people together.”

Plans for a new geology building are finally starting to crystallize.

The Boone Pickens School of Geology will break ground this fall on the Core Research Facility on the corner of McElroy Road and North Willis Street.

The 6,500-square-foot building will become the main hub for treatment, storage and analysis of rock core samples, according to an Oklahoma State University Communications release.

The building will assist in hosting geology professionals for industryrelated short courses and core workshops, according to the release. It will allow for new undergraduate and graduate programming opportunities, such as reservoir rock analysis, which would aid petroleum geoscience research.

Estella Atekwana, the school of geology head, said the building will be named after professor emeritus Gary Stewart.

“Dr. Stewart has made a long lasting impact on the growth of our school and he touched and transformed the lives of

hundreds of students,” Atekwana said in an email. “It is only befitting that we honor him in this way.”

For the past two years, the university has worked on planning and fundraising for this new building, according to the release.

The Core Research Facility will cost $2 million to build and $500,000 to equip. An additional $500,000 is endowed for maintenance and technology support, bringing the total to $3 million.

The Core Research Facility is expected to grow grant revenue and establish a technological infrastructure to allow

the school to be a leader in emerging research, according to the release.

Mike Kuykendall, Felix Energy geoscience manager and building donor, said in the release applied rock core research is integral to accessing natural resources.

“Rocks are the foundation of the geosciences, and their study can unlock a multitude of diverse understanding and resources for the world,” he said.

OSU student charged with larceny

An Oklahoma State University student is being charged with five misdemeanor counts of larceny of merchandise from a retailer.

Dylan Thomas Clem, 27, reportedly stole nine Bluetooth speakers from the Student Union Store between Feb. 15 and Feb. 21, according to court records.

When the store reported the larcenies, OSU police reviewed footage from cameras inside the Union and identified Clem.

Clem has been issued

a letter to appear in court April 30. If he does not appear on or before that date, there will be a warrant issued for his arrest.

Clem was going to be charged in February with a felony on a count of larceny of merchandise from retailer, according to court documents. However, Clem’s preliminary hearing was stricken pending a drug court appearance.

‘Game on’ Stillwater police responded to a disturbance about 7 p.m. Tuesday in an alley behind C & L Liquor Store .

The responding officer

found two men, Ronnie Lee Denman and Travis Ray Owens, struggling on the ground, according to police reports.

As the officer approached, he ordered them to stop, but neither let go of the other.

The officer ordered Denman to get off of Owens.

When he still did not comply, the officer grabbed Denman around the neck with his right arm and lifted him off of Owens.

The officer set Denman down a few feet away, instructed him to lie down and placed him in handcuffs.

The officer returned to

Owens to hear his side of the story. Reports state Owens was standing with a friend who was reportedly not involved.

Owens told the officer he and Denman had disagreed in the past and “did not like each other,” according to police reports.

Owens said he and his friend were walking through the alley when they saw Denman lying on the ground outside his home.

Owens said he asked Denman whether he was OK. In response, he said Denman got up, removed his hat and jacket, and tackled Owens, taking him to the ground.

On the other hand, Den-

man said he was trying to get on his bicycle when Owens and his friend came through the alley. He said he told Owens he could not walk through the alley and he would have to walk around. He said Owens replied, “F*** you.”

Denman told the officer, “I’m a person that when somebody says f*** me, then, game on.”

Based on physical signs, the officer determined Denman was intoxicated and placed him under arrest for public intoxication.

Reports state Owens did not want to press charges.

Court records show both Denman and Owens have

lengthy criminal records in Oklahoma. Denman has been tried for misdemeanors and felonies in Nowata, Payne, Tulsa and Washington counties and has had two protective orders filed against him.

Owens has been tried for misdemeanors and felonies in Bryan, Latimer, Leflore, Payne and Seminole counties and has had three protective orders and one emergency protective order filed against him.

International students celebrate festivals at Cultural Night M i ca h Allen S ta ff Repo rt er @o c olly

The Seretean Center for Performing Arts transformed into eight countries Friday and Saturday night.

The International Student Organization hosted two showings of its Cultural Night.

The event was a competition between eight student groups representing different countries. Each student group prepared an act relating to the event’s theme.

This year, the theme was “Festivals Around the World,” and each performance reflected a festival from the groups’ countries.

A panel of judges evaluated each performance, grading on adherence to theme, creativity, cultural appearance and choreography.

ISO Vice President Chuong Do said the theme reflected the times.

“We always try to get a theme that bounces off the current events in the world,” Do said. “Lately, there’s been a rise against globalization and diversity. … There’s nothing more unique to a culture than their festivals, so we wanted to showcase that part of the culture.”

The groups were divided into two categories, small group and large group,

based on the number of performers.

Sara Karki, a business freshman in the Nepalese Student Association, said she enjoyed performing in the event.

“It was actually really fun and exciting,” Karki said. “Of course, it’s a little nerve-racking when you’re about to go on stage, but overall it was a really fun experience.”

The show started with an introduction from Mr. International OSU, Aneeque Ahmed Mir, of Pakistan, and Ms. International OSU, Jiaxuan Wu, of China. The introduction included a song by Mir and an interpretive dance by Wu. They served as the emcees for the rest of the evening.

Each of the eight student groups performed its act to give the audience a glimpse into a festival through dances, costumes,

music and, for some of the groups, props such as swords and lanterns. All the pieces of each performance, whether modern or traditional, reflected the culture of the respective country through the group’s chosen festival.

Local dancers and musicians provided three guest performances eahc night, as well. The guest performers included the Showstoppers, a local dance company, Manoj Madhavaa Manikam, a graduate student who played a melody on the piano, and Stephen and Sylvan Zhang, brothers who played a Haydn violin duet.

Megan Gallagher, a

sociology freshman, said she enjoyed experiencing all the acts.

“I thought all of the performances were really good,” Gallagher said.

“They were very energetic and bright and colorful.”

The awards were announced on the second night. The Sri Lankan Students Association took home the grand prize in the small group category, and the Indian Student Association won the big group category.

sailed over their hands and out of the stadium. The Cowboys (16-11 overall, 1-5 Big 12) rallied late, with Colin Simpson representing the tying run in the ninth, but lost their second conference series in as many weekends.

“We chose to fight,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said.

“Kids did a good job of getting the tying run to home plate in the ninth. We had

the right guy at home plate, and we came up a little short.”

OSU is 1-5 in conference play for the first time since 2012. Ranked in only one national poll at No. 23, the Cowboys find themselves at risk of becoming unranked after 77 straight weeks of being ranked in at least one poll, dating to early in 2013, Holliday’s first season.

The Cowboys have been unranked in only 11 games under Holliday, his first 11 as the coach. Asked if they pay attention to rankings, Holliday and Simpson said no.

“I know I don’t,” Simpson said. “I never get online or check the rankings or check the polls. I just go

about it day by day and play baseball.”

The Mountaineers (15-10, 4-2) scored first on Jimmy Galusky’s RBI double in the second. OSU responded when senior first baseman Dustin Williams blasted his first home run of the year, an opposite-field, two-run shot that carried over Allie P.’s left-field wall.

Trailing 2-1, West Virginia began its third-inning rally with an infield single and a walk. An error by freshman shortstop Cameron Dobbs on a potential double-play ball loaded the bases.

Another infield single tied the game. After a lineout, Illig smoked his third home run of the year, ending righthander Blake Battenfield’s

outing with the Cowboys trailing 6-2.

“Little things add up in this game,” Holliday said.

“Just cleaning up and closing down on our ability to win some of the smaller pieces and finer points of the game that we’re continuing to grow and learn from.

“We’re close.”

The Cowboys put at least one runner on in each of the first six innings, including a solo home run by Simpson in the sixth. He added a tworun shot in the eighth but popped out to end the game after Garrett Benge’s tworun homer in the ninth.

The Cowboys will try to get back on track when they travel north on Interstate 35 to face Wichita State at 7

p.m. Tuesday. The teams’ game in Stillwater earlier in the week was rained out.

The Cowboys are 2-5 in true road games this season, but Holliday said Sunday’s final innings can propel them forward.

“We turned the tide a little bit for ourselves,” Holliday said. “Sometimes, that’s the most important win, is where you’re at with your own team. Even though the scoreboard didn’t get us where we needed to be, we got ourselves moving in the right direction.”

OSU coach Kenny Gajewski said he was unaware his team began 2016 conference play winless in the first six games.

“It’s obviously a complete change,” Gajewski said. “We’re not racing.

We’re controlling the tempo and controlling the things that we can. I think it’s just a year farther along. Experience is a big deal. We’ll see if this team can handle being 6-0.”

The Cowgirls take a break from conference play with a home game against Tulsa on Wednes-

day and face Texas A&M in a three-game series beginning Friday.

Gajewski said he doesn’t focus on his team’s win percentage.

“I look at a team who’s playing very, very well, and I look at a team that’s having a lot of fun,” Gajewski said. “I look at a program that’s growing.

I look at student-athletes who are involved in the classroom outside of the field. That’s the success that we talk about.

“I want more, and I think they want more as well.”

The enhanced girl becomes a character named Major (Scarlett Johansson) after she is redesigned.

Major begins work with a special task force, Section 9, to fight terrorism efforts.

After one of her operations, Major begins to have glitches even the company that designed her, Hanka Technology, struggles to fix.

The glitch raises questions for Hanka Technology and Major. The race begins to

see who can get the answers first.

Many were unhappy with the casting of Johansson.

Major was a young Japanese girl who underwent her transformation and came back in a white American’s shell. Several people have accused the casting team of “whitewashing.”

Despite the questionable casting and flaws in its script, “Ghost in the Shell” took its audience to a magical new world. The graphics clearly illustrated the setting of the story with a colorful display of technological advancements in this dystopian society.

However, the graphics

are not without fault. Many of the fight scenes take on a video game-like quality that makes certain scenes hard to take seriously.

This movie examines how technology is able to change contemporary society and the pitfalls that come with it.

Technology turns Major into not only a danger to those she hunts but also a danger to herself.

Throughout her mission to shut down cyborg hacker Kuze (Michael Pitt), Major discovers the person she is hunting might not be deserving of the justice she intends to serve. On her journey of justice, Major begins to question everything she

knows.

Her past becomes as uncertain as her enemies, and she begins to lose her identity. “Ghost in the Shell” draws the audience to the conclusion that the past is not the element that defines the character but rather the actions that the character chooses to make going forward.

Overall, “Ghost in the Shell” provides several questions that stick around after the movie.
